Red Hot D.C. Chicken Chain Roaming Rooster Opens a Shop in Tenleytown - Eater DC

"Hit D.C. chain Roaming Rooster continued its rapidly accelerating expansion last week, celebrating a grand opening at its third standalone store, at 4600 Wisconsin Avenue NW in Tenleytown, on Friday, February 12. The brand sells D.C.’s favorite fried chicken sandwich, according to a reader poll in Washington City Paper’s Best Of issue. In addition to Nashville hot, Buffalo, and honey butter chicken sandwiches, Roaming Rooster sells wings, tenders, and sides. After opening its first restaurant in Woodridge and rolling out four food trucks, Roaming Rooster opened a U Street NW location for carryout and delivery in September. The company, from Michael Habtemariam, Biniam Habtemariam, and Hareg Mesfin, will be one of the opening tenants inside the redeveloped Western Market food hall in Foggy Bottom. Roaming Rooster is also working on opening locations in Anacostia and Chantilly, Virginia, according to a representative." - Gabe Hiatt

It's fast food folks. A glorified chicken sandwich and some fries. The technical aspects of how they made the chicken sandwich is great but it just simply isn't worth the drive to go out the way. The service was subpar and operationally they weren't as polished as other fast food chains.

So, the burgers here at roaming rooster were good but the chicken tenders were way way too spicy. I have a high tolerance for spice and this was really spicy for me; Even though I got medium spice, not even hot, just medium. If you want the chicken tenders you should get mild or just don’t get them. It was also pretty expensive one burger is like 11 dollars. I went with my family (4 people) and the total was like 73 dollars, we could’ve gotten sushi instead of this and we would still have extra money left over. The fries are good but I suggest to not get honey mustard or rooster sauce. Those just aren’t for me. This is my first time coming here so idk if they just accidentally mixed up the medium spice chicken tenders for extra hot spice.

Google
This place has the best chicken sandwich I’ve had in a very long time. You walk in and they have a Bob Ross painting show running it’s adorable. Decor is minimal and clean. Came in at the right time before a line of 7 people walked in behind me. I got a combination of the extra hot buffalo chicken and the club. Extra hot sauce was spicy but still not enough for my liking. Chicken breast was super juicy and the applewood smoked bacon was perfectly thick and crunchy.

Google
So today I decided to try both Dave's Hot chicken and Roaming roosters chicken. For both I got hot because I am not that good with spicy foods. This is the Roaming rooster review for the other one it's on their Google reviews. I thought the chicken was great the toppings tasted excellent especially when they fell on the plate. However it was not hot at all. I've had KFC Nashville hot chicken and it is much spicier. However this is the better choice between the two in my opinion. For the hot chicken sandwich I will give it a 8.5. I wish it were spicier so next time I will be getting the hottest one.

Google
Pretty tasty chicken sandwiches - the chicken itself is nicely seasoned, we got mild and there was the perfect amount of heat - the honey butter sandwich was a standout - we got delivery so understandably fries a bit less crispy - the chicken sandwich with slaw was a bit more heat - jalapeño and cilantro in the slaw (I’m weird and have that soap cilantro thing). Overall tasty, would order again and the Sauces are delicious

Google
My husband had the honey butter sandwich and it was very tasteful. I had the chicken nuggets and it was the complete opposite. Nuggets were sort of overcooked and had no flavor. I thought seasoning would have been in the heat powder that was dusted on top of the nuggets but I was mistaken. The fries and milkshake (oreo) were great! I probably wouldn't go here again, but my husband said he would only for the honey butter chicken sandwich. They did have a revolving door and orders were going in and out, which was a good sign.

Google
They flavor their chicken so well. All the sandwiches are excellent

Leah Renée

Google
The Roaming Rooster was very clean and the staff were excellent. The Oreo milkshake was absolutely amazing. I gave the food 4 stars only because the slaw, in my opinion, needed to be finer sliced or shredded and with a bit more vinaigrette. I also would have liked more seasoning on the fries. That being said, I would definitely go back.

Yelp
Good chicken tenders. Nice juicy flavors and served fresh and hot. There are 3 pieces of chicken, and they come with pickles and a slice of bread. I ordered mild spicy level, and it didn't taste spicy at all. Might try medium level next time.

Yelp
Roaming Rooster is a winner winner chicken dinner- heheh see what I did there? If you want fast and fresh chicken tenders or a chicken sandwich that is good-sized and tasty, look no further! They also have different levels of spicy sauce to add to your chicken that are really yummy. The fries are freshly sliced and made after you order- so this place is the real deal fast food chicken stop. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Stopping by this place was an absolute coincidence. Husband and I were looking for a good place to eat dinner, and we always crave Nashville hot chicken when we are home (Hampton roads). When we are in the DMV, we always find an excuse to get our hands on some. We drove past the location, and were immediately reminded of how hungry we were. We walked in, and ordered two sandwiches. I ordered mine with everything on it. This is the first time that I have ever loved coleslaw on a sandwich this much there were slices of jalapeño, mixed in and pickled onion. The flavor combination was unlike anything I've ever had before. I will say that this place does not have any parking other than the shoulder parking in the front of the building. Which is very limited especially on a busy day. So be prepared to park ways away. This places is always busy, and for good reason. They're pretty quick at busting out orders.

Yelp
Let's talk about the chicken sandwich's! They are amazing, mouth watering, extremely flavorful, and very memorable. It was so good had it back to back over the course of a week. The spice level is ASTRONOMICAL! If you can't handle spicy food get the mild so you can enjoy the sandwich. Service was really nice- each time I went everyone was kind and helpful. They have a breakdown of the menu and helped me pick the best sandwich. Ambiance was cute- it's small but inviting. Had games playing on the tv and the windows were open and allowed for fresh air to come in. There was also seating available outside and access to the restroom.

Yelp
This was my second time eating roaming rooster. I loved them. The portion is so worth the price! My sandwich was soooo filling and the fries are perfectly crisp. My wife and I could barely finish our sandwiches and barely put a dent in the huge serving of fries! The chocolate shake is the right texture and creaminess, it paired very well with the food. The location doesn't have much parking but if you're anticipating to pick up in go it's the perfect location. The seating inside is limited but has a great layout. I can't wait till my next visit to DC

Yelp
One of the best chicken sandwiches I have ever had. I are the OG Nashville with medium heat. The chicken was fried perfectly, and the heat was balance with their homemade slaw. The medium heat is fairly robust if you are not big on spice. Really nice staff. I would eat this every week if I lived here.
google avatar

Scot B.

Yelp
Very good chicken sandwich. Liked how you can control the spice level. Also high quality french fries. They're double fried and very crispy. Service was relatively quick. They are tables and some counter space inside if you want to eat there.
google avatar

Yelp
4.5 out of 5 stars. Found this place on a Instagram video talking about the three best chicken sandwiches in the DMV area. Really great cut, 2 actually, of chicken breast and nicely cooked. Be aware that there is no sauce on the sandwich, it is more of a dry rub but really tasty. The house-made slaw and pickles were a nice compliment as well on the sandwich that I had. Surprisingly, the twice fried fries were the weak link. They were not seasoned very well and did not taste twice fried at all. Actually the exact opposite. They should've been kept in the fryer for longer as mine were very mushy, not crunchy at all.

Kimberly K.

Yelp
Really delicious food and quick service. The sandwich and Cole slaw are delicious. Great take out spot.
google avatar

Rod L.

Yelp
A solid 4. I had the medium hot Nashville style chicken. Tasted great and it was huge. The chicken itself though was "meh". Ah, it wasn't thick and juicy. It was too skinny. Hope that makes sense. The staff was very helpful and kind. We will be back. Fatten up that chicken!;)
google avatar

Thiane G.

Yelp
I stopped into this location because I was craving my usual order: honey butter sandwich (medium spice), fires with rooster sauce, and a half and half. I've never seen this location be too busy so I got my order back fairly quickly. The sandwich was made to perfection. The honey butter was dripping off the sandwich and the whole thing hit the spot. The rooster sauce is one of the best fast food sauces out there! I think RR has the best chicken sandwiches in the DMV. I'm glad they're having continued success.
google avatar

Paola P.

Yelp
Ohhhh honey! Go treat yourself to a honey butter fried chicken sandwich. I mean look how generous they are with the chicken. Got a side of their popular dipping sauce honey butter.
google avatar

Julian P.

Yelp
First off I wanna say that I came here extremely hungry. The woman at the front was very friendly and helpful which was already a good start. After a quick glance at the menu, I ended up ordering the club sandwich at a medium spice w/ fries on the side. That particular sandwich was very mediocore and lacked flavor. The chicken was thin, not well seasoned, and the spice was really just spice. I assume that their honey butter is their one trick. The fries on the other hand were plentiful and delicious. Crispy & soft paired with their amazing house made sauce. I had to grab more of that sauce to help put those fries down!
google avatar

Robert K.

Yelp
Super good Honey Butter Chicken sandwich! Fast food that is really good! Go get you some!
google avatar

Annie T.

Yelp
Seriously the best chicken sandwiches. I wished they were more locations that are accessible around me. I highly recommend their honey butter sandwich with a side of honey butter. I can only eat mild or medium spices. The mild is almost no spice which is still delicious and juicy. And the medium is a little too spicy for me but bearable. Any other spice level higher than medium, be prepared to be in the bathroom after eating. Their service is quick and fresh. I am now a regular. I get their sandwiches at least once a week. This probably explains why I am gaining weight, but I'm not complaining. It's so good!!!

Tony G.

Yelp
Best chicken sandwich I've maybe ever had! I got the medium and it's a little spicy but not too spicy. Eat it while it it is hot!

Yelp
Conditional 5. I love Roaming Rooster back from its food truck and NE days, so I'm always ready to try out any location that gets even closer to me. Can't believe there's one literally on my street now. It's a tiny strip for sure with only street parking - try some of the off roads, but once you're inside it's hella clean and franchised compared to other locations. Big tip - I recommend ordering ahead on ToastTab since you can directly pickup when you get there. Otherwise it's maybe a 10-15 minute if you're lucky alone, perhaps hours if you reach peak crowds. The chicken is solid as always - definitely my favorite take on hot chicken. My go to is the salad option with jalapeño slow, but sandwiches are what they're known for. The slight disappointment I have is from the buns. Not sure if it's this location alone or a side effect of Roaming Rooster's general expansions - but the buns felt cheaper. You can see in the pics it's a general hamburger bun - it just tastes cheap compared their older days, and brings it from a 11/10 to 8/10 for me. That said still the best fried chicken sandwich in price and taste. Compromise be damned, everyone should try this at least once.

Yelp
Accepts both cash and credit card. Also does delivery (UberEats, etc) After hearing all the buzz about their chicken, I decided to give this place a try. We ordered their famous hot Nashville chicken sandwich and their Honey Butter chicken sandwich. You can select your spice level from none, mild, medium , hot and extra hot. For the honey butter sandwich, I ordered their mild version. For the Nashville style sandwich, we ordered the medium and hot spice level. In my honest opinion, the mild is very mild. Not much flavor. The medium spice level gives your tongue a little tickle. Has a tiny kick with each bite. The Hot spice level is pretty hot. Not painful spicy, but the spice level does pick up with each bite. When you take your first bite, you hardly recognize the spice level. However, give it a minute or two, and you will feel the spice level increase. And with each bite, the spice in your mouth with gradually get hotter. The medium spice is equivalent to eating kimchi spice level. The Hot spice level is much hotter than that. In terms of quality of the sandwiches, they were really good. The chicken itself is not thick, but there are several pieces of chicken and the chicken is very flavorful. The butter honey chicken was okay. It really does look good in a picture sense. However, I was not too much of a fan of this. However their Nashville chicken was delicious. Comes with veggie slaw and pickles on the sandwich. It's good. In terms of cost, that's the factor that is bothering me. Each sandwich starts at $10 which is a bit on the pricey side. Also they do sell chicken tender $9ish for 3 tenders. Overall, the food is good. Quality is good. It's a bit expensive, but it's tasty. Probably worth checking out once in a while.

Yelp
In the war of chicken sandwiches, this place is the winner. Honey Butter! That's where it's at. I get the mild because I'm a heat wimp. I know the Yelp wants long, detailed reviews. Meh. Like chicken sandwiches? This place is a MUST try.

Yelp
My wife has been raving about their food truck for a long time, so when we realized we were near one of their new brick-and-mortal locations, we decided to try it. We ordered some strips, a couple mild honey butter chicken sandwiches, a honey butter hot chicken sandwich, and some fries. The sandwiches were all excellent (pro tip - ask to add slaw). They fill the sandwich with thinly sliced and breaded chicken breast, instead of one large breast. This results in a lot of crunch in each bite. The hot was a nice level for me, but it's pretty hot, and the mixture of the hot with the sweet and savory honey butter and the slightly acidic coleslaw was really delicious. The mild was a little meh for me, but the honey butter saved it in my mind. The fries were also better than expected - more like five guys fries than McDonalds, and very tasty. The chicken strips were the worst part - we got them without spice for our little one, and they were pretty tasteless. So, to sum up: 1). Very good chicken sandwiches and fries - probably tied for my favorite in the area so far with Hot Lola's in Ballston. 2). Not the best tenders if you don't want hot - instead try Hot & Juicy Crawfish in Falls Church 3). Soda's are overpriced - a non-refillable Diet Coke was like 3.50, so I'd skip that.

Elda A.

Yelp
$10 for 3 burnt wings and they forgot the pickles. Flavor was ok but way too pricey. I wasn't really able to resolve anything over the phone and I live too far to go back. My order was literally just the 3 wings, bread and pickles and couldn't get it right
google avatar

Russell J.

Yelp
Great fried chicken place. We ordered the Original Sandwich (Medium) and the Chicken & Coleslaw (Mild) as well as fries. Both chickens were pretty spot on as far as chicken goes; moist, delicious, and seasoned perfectly. The slaw was also a great crisp cool contrast to the meal. The one star knock is bc they got our mild/medium chickens mixed up, but other than that, a great experience.
google avatar

Linda V.

Yelp
Was so close not coming here cause the parking around here is close to none. I looped around one more time and finally got one, and I'm glad that I did. Waited no more than 5/6 minutes after ordering my honey butter chicken sandwich with cheese. I took a bite and couldn't believe this wasn't getting as much hype as that Popeyes chicken sandwich was when it had first came out. This sandwich was sweet and spicy and savory every bite was delicious and crunchy and flavorful. Although a part of me wanted some acidity so I'll try it with the pickles next time. I also like the fact that their menu is very simple and minimal. I didn't get a side and kind of a little upset there wasn't more options. Anywho this place is still a winner winner chicken dinner .
google avatar

Dan C.

Yelp
Good sandwiches and made to order fries. Tried the Nashville hot and butter chicken sandwich. Both came out hot and seasoned well. Extra sauce on the side is on point. Location is accessible on a busy street. Staff is polite and ready to help with orders. Indoor seating is clean and bright.

Jason J.

Yelp
The chicken sandwich was great and the French fries we hot and just right!! The service was quick. Very good.
google avatar

DeRod L.

Yelp
The spicy chicken sandwich is just that, spicy. I went with the medium after having the hot before. I like spicy food but this chicken is hot. Try the medium and work your way up.
google avatar

Crystal C.

Yelp
Finally made my way to a Roaming Rooster and can't wait to go back! Visited the newer Wisconsin Ave/Tenleytown location for lunch last week. Restaurant adhered to all covid protocols (masks required/adequate spacing/food pick up rack). Got to try the Nashville Hot chicken sandwich at spice level Medium and a side of fries. I'm a fan of all things spicy but I'm glad I got the medium to be able to enjoy the flavors and not overpowered with heat. Sandwich was the perfect level of crunch and spice and the slaw/pickle mix was a nice addition. Customer service was great...friendly and quick. Will definitely return because I'm eyeing that Honey Butter sandwich.
google avatar

Andy S.

Yelp
Great good, best chicken sandwich I've ever had. If you're not big on spicy do the mild.
google avatar

Vy T.

Yelp
I've had a few hot chicken places and I would say this place is pretty solid. I got the tenders while my boyfriend got the sandwich. We prefer the tenders because the bread on the sandwich was super thin and the added slaw made it kinda soggy. I would say the spice level is a bit less than I am use too. The house honey mustard is sooo good! It was our favorite part of the whole meal. The fries were solid but not as crispy as I liked. Overall I'd say it was good and I would come back! Also I know they might not be able to control it but the AC/air circulation in the store front was so low it was unbearably hot.
google avatar

Speechless S.

Yelp
Doesn't look like much inside as the place has no wall decor, but the food so far has been great. I've tried a few different sandwiches and have been happy. It's different taste compared to Popeyes or Chick Fil A and has a more unique homemade fried chicken taste. The wings we weren't impressed with. They weren't big enough for the price we were charged. The fries are similar to 5guys. Overall I'd give them a 4 and will definitely be back. No pic, sorry. Next time!!!
google avatar

Anna H.

Yelp
It's easy to get in and out of this little take out chicken shop. You order at the counter, you could stay and eat, but I basically always take my food away. I've ordered a bunch of times via Uber Eats, too. The food is always fresh and yummy - it's really yummy!
google avatar

Nicola M.

Yelp
This restaurant just opened up in Tenleytown and it is awesome! Their chicken tenders are cooked perfectly and are very moist. I loved their Buffalo chicken sandwich. I chose mild, and it was so delicious with the blue cheese dressing. It is a huge sandwich and good value for money. Their French fries are hand cut, and taste just like boardwalk fries. So tasty!!
google avatar

Nick M.

Yelp
Just delicious. Was a nice person at the counter. Place was clean and inviting but geared towards pick-up/delivery instead of eat-in. Kind of small.
google avatar

Theron P.

Yelp
The food is really high quality and taste amazing. Taste great but has a expensive price, so only eat for special occasions. Overall is really good chicken and if I'm town, you stop by and try it! Ps - when they say spicy, they mean spicy!
google avatar

Alessandra D.

Yelp
is this your sign to grab Roaming Rooster? Yes, yes it is. We love roaming rooster so much to satisfy our fried chicken sandwich craving here in the DMV. It's insanely good and worth every bite. I think I've tried almost every sandwich from them and my favorite would be the honey butter (add extra honey butter for it) or the Nashville hot!

laya s.

Yelp
The food was good and was a good size. The service was nice because the food came fast. The places was clean and was a tiny little building with pictures.

Bob S.

Yelp
Chicken was cooked well and was juicy, but breading was soggy. I will give it one more try before going elsewhere.
google avatar

Brittany Anne O.

Yelp
Oh my goodness gracious. This was hands down one of the best chicken sandwiches I've ever had. Wow. I had the honey butter sandwich with a side of fries. The sandwich was crisp and spicy with all white meat. The butter added the perfect touch of sweetness that didn't feel like too much. It's hard to find a chicken sandwich that isn't "lacking" without adding Mayo of some kind. But for those of who don't like Mayo-- this becomes a problem. This sandwich was such a great combo of flavors with no Mayo needed! Hooray! For $4, they give you a huge portion of fries -- more than enough for two people. The service was friendly and quick! I will definitely be back.
google avatar

Heather M.

Yelp
Quite possibly the best chicken sandwich I've ever eaten. The OG Nashville was beyond amazing. The slaw and homemade dips are delicious.
google avatar

Richard L.

Yelp
Why was no one taking about this place during the whole chicken sandwich war?! Blows Popeye's sandwich out the water. My friend and I tried the OG Nashville and The Club both in hot. When they say hot, they definitely meant it. Both were delicious and came with 3 pieces of pounded chicken. I'd lean toward ordering The Club again, but based on the reviews the Honey Butter is the way to go. Online ordering was easy and probably took about 10 mins for our order to finish. I hear they have tater tots instead of fries for breakfast, which kind of sucks because I think that's the superior potato product. I'll be back and I hear they're opening a new location at Pike & Rose.
google avatar

John W.

Yelp
Great sandwich, by far the best I've had anywhere. Extremely long wait time and very expensive for a fried chicken carry out.

Natalie T.

Yelp
I had the honey butter sandwich. Was better than any other chicken sandwich I had. I got hot spicy level was spicy but tasted so good.

Omar S.

Yelp
Best chicken sandwich ever! This place has become a tradition to eat at among the friend group. The buffalo sandwich is the best and the service is good. Thanks for existing.
google avatar

Bill P.

Yelp
Nashville HOT chicken sandwich. Hugeeeee great soft bun surrounding crispy yet moist chicken with slaw. Be HUNGRY when you order it. It is a slow yet delicious ride. Owner Mike good guy!!!
google avatar

Amit M.

Yelp
Tenleytown is privileged to welcome the latest outpost of this budding D.C. icon. Roaming Rooster does chicken like no one else. My personal favorite is the fried chicken and coleslaw salad.

Sun C.

Yelp
I accidentally ordered from this DC location for pick up. I thought I ordered from the Gaithersburg location. When I realized my mistake I called and was reassured that I would get a refund of the mistaken order. I appreciated this so much. This is fantastic service. I'll be sure to stop by when I'm in DC to thank them. This is the least I can do for a business that cares about its customers.
google avatar

Perry P.

Yelp
Thankfully a chicken sandwich restaurant in the neighborhood that doesn't contribute to hate groups (I hope) and is open on Sundays! The Nashville Hot is excellent. I had mine with mild heat and it was about as hot as other place's spicy sandwiches. The fries were great too. I recommend getting a side of the sriracha mayo and dipping everything in it.
google avatar

Aye B.

Yelp
Highly recommended! The price point is fair, considering quality and locations. This ain't Popeyes, or McDonald's folks. You get gourmet, fresh hot deliciousness. I always recommend establishments that have great food and clean clean bathrooms. If you don't go, that's fine! More for meeeeeeeeeeeee :)

Pasindu S.

Yelp
I orederd two extra hot wings from the Bethesda branch and there was ZERO spice. Go if you like bland chicken.
