The Best Long Beach Restaurants, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"Be patient when ordering at Robert Earl’s BBQ, a laid-back, family-owned restaurant on the north end of Long Beach. The rib tips here are particularly tender and the sides, including barbecue baked beans and macaroni and cheese, are superlative, making it modus operandi to order a few to share. Dine outside on one of its patio picnic tables or inside at tables draped with red-and-white checkered tablecloths. Note: Large-group platters can be ordered on-site for same day visits; catering trays can be ordered two or more days in advance." - Mona Holmes

My preference is to always leave a positive review as I know many entrepreneurs have made sacrifices to realize their dreams to open a restaurant. I truly wanted Robert Earls to be mouthwatering tasty: convenient location, pleasant welcome by staff, picturesque food. Unfortunately, the greens and potato salad were both very salty. I was more disappointed that the rib tips were dry. It’s too bad because the sauce was a nice combination of sweetness with a touch of heat. Cooking great ribs is an art, so is the ability to determine the right amount of sauce that covers the ribs. Some of my rib-tips were sauced adequately and some had relatively no sauce. While my experience wasn’t the positive experience that I was hoping for, I won’t rule out giving it a second chance.

Some of the best tasting BBQ menu is simple, and the price for the amount of food is appropriate. I recommend the ribs and their BBQ beans. All their meats and sides are very flavourful!

Since the pandemic began we have made it a point to support small businesses, food places mostly. I saw this place on google and decided to try it out, since the reviews looked good. This can’t not be the same bbq you all are talking about in the reviews. The bbq didn’t taste fresh, it had tons of sauce on top. So much that I didn’t even see the brisket. The links taste like a big hot dog and it was sliced into thin pieces(Why?). The Mac and cheese was mushy, no whole noodle in site. The potato salad was what you expect to get from restaurants, nothing special. Y’all definitely need to take “must have” off of the banana pudding. There was no bananas in it and not even pudding. It was some kind of whipped vanilla fluff with wafers mixed in. I’m just being honest. People want to support small businesses, but the quality also needs to be worth it.

Google
It's good! I wanted to order extra to take on the plane. I'm still considering calling to see if they will ship it.The place is clean. Sauce is good. It's cooked right. Price is good. Employees are nice. We have a winner.

Some of the best bbq I’ve had since I was young. Reminds me of my dad’s bbq beef ribs. I seriously was taken back home to Texas! I love this place. So glad I found it!

Google
Robert Earl's took me out of this world on my tastebuds! So delicious! I loved the beef ribs!! Had so much meat on from your usual you see at the grocery store. I got the beef lovers and mini tex. All meats were delicious!! Definitely recommend this place. I've driven by so many times since I live literally 10 mins away. I thought it was just other bbq place since the ones I've been to weren't so good and made me stop looking for good real bbq. I will definitely visit this place again before my move back east. I'm sad I didn't come sooner and give them a try! Thanks for the wonderful lunch today!! Thanks to Kevin at the front counter taking orders too! He was very hospitable and coincidentally he mentioned North Carolina when he spoke of how bbq is done back east when I told him we came from there...and we really were from NC. 😁

Google
Great customer service and I can see why, they charge are a little pricey. It's a good portion of food. I had the chicken dinner with mac and cheese with greens. My baby had the rib tops dinner with greens and beans.

Google
I ordered the three meat combos with two sides ~ I truly believe that it was enough meat for me to eat 4 three or four days ~ the potato salad is awesome ~ the baked beans were okay and the price was decent $27 ~ I will be back there for more food later on this year for my BBQ fix ~ oh and the spicy BBQ sauce is really really good it's not actually that spicy though but it's very good not hot enough to burn your tongue or make your nose run

Yelp
I recently tried their BBQ at an event, and it was so good it haunted me until I was compelled to get a plate for myself the next day. While I was able to sample the chicken and brisket at the event, I decided to go for the 1/2 lb brisket plate with two sides. The potato salad is delicious and I couldn't resist the cornbread because somehow it reminded me of Filipino bibingka with its sweetness. I ended up getting two to share, but tbh I will probably eat both myself. While eating it fresh from the smoker at the event is probably the ideal, having it at home and eating it warmed up also tasted good. No complaints. If you're craving some smoked BBQ, Robert Earls is your place. If you have the money and want to make a bunch of people happy (and probably sleepy) have them cater your event. 5/5 stars. PARKING: there is currently (May 2024) heavy construction on Artesia, so find a side street to park in.

Yelp
This place is awesome. The portions are generous, the are prices fair, and everything tastes absolutely amazing. They're so proud of their meat (and they're right to be) they give you the sauce on the side because you won't need it unless you really want it. I got the normal and the spicy sauces, but ended up using very little of each. I smoke and BBQ my own stuff most of the time, so I'm picky with it, but this place definitely gets the gold star. Whenever I feel too lazy I come here.

Yelp
We came around 11:55 and their sign said they would open at noon. We decided to stop by Starbucks next door first to get something to drink. By the time we came out, it was 12:04 and they still weren't open. We waited 5 more minutes before someone finally opened the door. When we entered to order, they only had about 5 things you could order. So we ordered the 3 meat combo. He said it would take 15 minutes. We didn't get our order until 30 minutes later. They provide a pretty good portion - however, the food wasn't that great in my opinion. The hot links were mealy and the pork ribs were kind of dry. The bbq sauce tasted like generic store bought sauce. I don't think that I'd come back. There also isn't anywhere to sit inside the establishment. They have a picnic table on the outside but it doesn't feel very welcoming.

Yelp
My Hommie found this spot. At first we thought it was closed, but if the sign says open it's open. Our order took a while. But let me tell you it's worth the Waite very good good bbq ribs the picture I posted is what I got the greens are bomb the broth there cooked in wow. got the spicy bbq sauce and I'm Mexican so I like hot and this bbq sauce doesn't disappoint. Definitely coming back with the family, to uncle Robert's bbq spot. Cause now we family.

Yelp
We are very disappointed! Prior to the 2020 pandemic, we loved Robert Earl's. They had very tasty, tender BBQ and a nice variety of sides. Quality control was great, and service WAS friendly and efficient. We would often order the rib tips, greens, beans and yams--but the last couple of times the tips were chewy--far below par. Robert Earl's lists certain operating hours, but whether or not they are actually open is hit or miss. They rarely answer their phone, and when they do the person on the other end speaks to us like they don't want to be there. Sad, because this was our go-to "cue spot". Hopefully things change. If so, we would return.

Yelp
Its Saturday, September 16th, and I'm running errands and hungry. I HAD TO HAVE BARBECUE TODAY! Immediately thought of Robert Earl's. Drove up and was so happy it wasn't a wait. The young man that assisted me had excellent customer service, and was very nice. Okay the food!! It was absolutely delicious!! I ordered the 2 meat combo, beef ribs and chicken. It came with 2 sides, so I chose potato salad & beans. GREAT CHOICE! Everything in that container was so flavorful and well seasoned, not to mention it was plentiful. I HAVE NEVER BEEN DISAPPOINTED HERE. IT IS SOOOOO GOOD!! My only complaint is they were only accepting cash today. With limited cash on me, I couldn't get all that I wanted. That was a disappointment and an inconvenience. That does not negate at all, from the delicious and tasty barbecue Robert Earl's has! Try it, you'll love it.

Yelp
I placed an order today, Tuesday, only to get 5 emails stating my order was cancelled and my card will be refunded. I called restaurant to find out why and the answering machine stated they were closed today while YELP shows them open. It's unfortunate they cannot update their hours on Yelp to prevent the customers inconvenience. I also want to know when my card will be refunded. Really sad to be met with a closed business that's advertised as open. They need to do better.

Yelp
Too bad there is no more dine in. Sorry to see it go, we left, didn't want take out. Hint: Put back dine in. The food is good here don't get me wrong, but when you want to just sit down and dine, that's just what you want to do.

Yelp
WOW WOW WOW .... I have found my new BBQ SPOT for now on. We ordered the Big Daddy Earl Platter for a family celebration and there was just DELICIOUS SILENCE in the beginner of the sit down because everyone was busy inhaling the food. Once everyone completed their first few bits, that is when everyone asked where I got the BBQ because it was really good. We also had the catfish which was really really good. Cannot say enough about this place. MY FAMILY will be back! Please contact me for your Real Estate needs if you are trying to buy/sale your home!

Yelp
The Q is delicious. Meat is Smokey, tender, fallin off the bone, full of flavor. We had pork ribs, brisket, and rib tips. The sides are.... different, mac is over seasoned and a bit greasy, beans are super tangy, greens have a totally different flavor profile than expected. Curious to try other sides to see if maybe they taste better. Cornbread was tasty. I paid $8 extra for a link but it was left out of my order unfortunately, would've loved to have tasted that. Wasn't expecting to be delayed by a 30 minute Jehovah's Witness appeal from staff but, people do what they feel called to do. I'd come again for the meat, but only If I knew I could respectfully get outta there without being held for 30 minutes + to listen to owner talk to me about her religion.

Yelp
If for some reason you can't go to L.A. for superior bbq, then Robert Earl's will hit the spot. What's similar to L.A. joints is the smokey flavor of the meat and slightly lacking customer service. For instance, I called to place my order and only because I had just read a Yelp review lamenting the "temporary cash only" situation on the day that reviewer ordered a month or so ago, I decided to ask, "You take credit cards right?" The reply "Uh, no. Cash only." Now, Robert Earl, why wouldn't you say that instead of waiting for me to ask? I just shook my head and hit up the closest atm because...ribs! But I would have been so annoyed to find out upon arrival to grab the goods that I had to leave to find a bank. Back to the food though. I got the rib dinner plate. $35! You read that right. Phew! But the portion of ribs was generous, six bones! So I can't complain. The sides were meh. Potato salad had a nice texture and chop (small chunks, not too large) but was bland. I added relish. The beans surprised me most because they had none of the familiar sweetness of baked or bbq beans. It was odd. They were savory but again kind of bland. I added brown sugar and a splash of ketchup but really couldn't salvage them. The ribs were pretty good though. Nice slight pull. Tender. Tasty. And I love their sauce. All in all, Robert Earl's is better than most anything you'd get in Orange County trying to pass for bbq. But, it's not competing with the multiple spots Inglewood has to offer (Woodys, Phillips, etc.)

Yelp
Thank you for replacing my food from the last time I ordered exact same thing. Customer service was great for replacing it. It turned out great this time.

Yelp
Bbq was great! Had 3 meat combo. Ribs, sausage and chicken. Sides were greens and Mac salad. Spicy bbq sealed the deal!!

Yelp
The food here is the best. Tasty and tender, spicy is actually spicy. Ordered on line and was ready as promised. Be sure to use the side door or you might think they are closed. Happy to support an independent business. Go get some you won't regret it. Only to go orders. I'm

Yelp
Had such high hopes, what a disappointment! Arrived at 1pm and waited almost 10 minutes for someone to show up at the window to take our order. We ordered the 3 meat combo with brisket, pork ribs and beef ribs with Mac and cheese and collard greens sides. We were told it would be 1 hour for the food, we agreed and left to shop.he said he would call when ready. At 2:15 (1 hour later) we hadn't heard so we came in to wait, the waiting area had 10 people waiting including the guy who ordered behind us. I inquired as to how much longer and was told there were 2 ahead of me. We waited as 8 more people had their food delivered. 2 other men complained ( one said he ordered online 2 days ago and they called to say it was ready and he had been waiting an hour) and a older woman came out to check their tickets and didn't even bother to look at me even though I was standing next to them. I went to the window and gave her my tickets and after 2 hours and 10 minutes we finally got our food. I was irritated at this point but hoped the food would make up the wait. A 3 meat meal with 2 sides and some cobbler was $60. The brisket was tough and salty, the pork ribs were ok but a little salty, the beef ribs were almost burnt and very salty and tough. The greens were good and the Mac and cheese was salty. Very, very disappointing. The wait and price were definitely not worth it

Yelp
Went here for BBQ on Sept 1st, 23. There were two then three customers waiting for called in orders. We waited at the walk in window looking at a paper menu and then realized we had to ring the bell. We did then a lady said she'd assist shortly. While we waited the 3rd customer came in to pick up her order after going to the grocery store. Her food still wasn't ready. We decided to leave, when an unpleasant exchange erupted between the waiting patrons and the cooks/those filling orders. We left for Jersey Mike's. Don't live here, so won't be going back.

Yelp
I want to give Robert Earl's BBQ credit for reaching out to me and trying to make things right. I will give them another chance.

Yelp
Some of the best BBQ I've had in so Cal and definitely a place to come back often. We had the two meat plate and both meats were legit -- beef ribs and brisket. The brisket was tender and flavorful and the ribs were nice and fatty! Loved the sides too, try the greens that they cook with turkey. The people here are also sooooo friendly and kind. Love this place!
google avatar

Carlos M.

Yelp
After I ordered, I was promptly told "Welcome to the family"...and that's who they treat you. You can see the barrel grills in the back, where the magic happens. I ordered the beef rib combo (2 sides included) a rack of pork ribs and the rib tips. My favorite was definitely the rib tips, nice juicy and tender. Go to side, the potato salad. If you're craving some Q, in the LBC, check out Robert Earl's and join the family.
google avatar

Yelp
Don't know why i torture myself going here and i did jus that today at 3pm and hardly having anything. I just wanted a beef link plate and they couldn't come through. I have to find a better spot.
google avatar

Dev R.

Yelp
I'm so done! I continued to come due to convenience, but I need to make Jay-Bee's or Hambone's my go-to because this time: Tangy sauce killed the taste of the meat The three ribs I got were burnt The BBQ beans were nothing but pork 'n beans with BBQ sauce I waited 30 min for this And paid $27
google avatar

M. S.

Yelp
First time here and definitely won't be the last time. This is way better than any of the trendy or chain bbq places. We had the beef ribs, pork ribs, rib tips, pulled pork and brisket. The pork ribs were my favorite. We had the bbq sauce (mild) on the side and it tasted so good. The online ordering of the food was so easy and convenient to use. The front door is the door on the corner and not the door near their outdoor tables. You can't go wrong with any selection. Enjoy.

Jane D.

Yelp
Came to Earls today (wed), hours said 12p-4p ( as stated in voicemail when I called). Showed up at about 130p and no one was there, closed sign on the door. Ran an errand, came back at 230p and same thing. Been passing by trying to catch them open to no avail. Welp....I give up!
google avatar

Yelp
For awhile I did not even know if this place was open but the reviews posted made us give it a shot. We LOVE their beef ribs which are so incredibly meaty and well cooked. We order online to ensure we are able to get some as they run out during the day. Their corn bread and mac and cheese were tasty but do not compare to their meaty stars!

Yelp
Haven't been in years. It became my default "go-to" spot when a local Compton legend went Hollywood and before I picked up bbq-ing myself. It used to be borderline great but it's now not as good as I remember it to be. Chicken sausage was pretty good but didn't have the exact wow factor I remember but I may be confusing the sausage with the other spot's chicken sausage. Rib tips were good but not as tender as I like them to be and it also had actual bone shards in them which I haven't had in rib tips before (bone not cartilage). Brisket was, by far and away, an absolute let down. I ordered 1/2 moist and 1/2 lean but got 1 full dry as Sahara desert meat. Their own slices didn't even go all the way through so you can imagine how tough it was to chew. Embarrassingly bad. Another huge letdown, and the main reason for this 1 star review, was the service. Just very abrupt "wait here", "hold on" from the young staff when they went to go get someone else to help up front. Story time...the inside door handle has very sharp pieces of metal sticking out that actually cut and drew blood on my finger. There was no initial apology when I went to go show them what their door did. They just either said "oh no", "shoot" or "whoa". They (the 3 younger kids) then hid in the back, out of view while they looked for a bandaid (which is supposed to be readily available per health code). 5 minutes pass and nothing - no bandaid as two older gentleman (one I'm sure was Robert himself) came up to see what happened. Robert does genuinely show some concern but he still has no alcohol, antibiotic or bandaid to address the situation. The other older gentleman reaches around him and tries to hand me a Clorox wipe for my finger and I tell him that's not for cuts which he says "yeah I'm just trying to have you clean your hands". At this point, I'm frustrated but I'm curious on what this circus is going to do next so I wait instead of storming out. Robert then leaves again and finally finds a small first aid after another 5 minutes. I put a bandaid on, grab my food and turn to walk out when I FINALLY get a " I'm sorry, my man" from robert. What a joke.

Yelp
Best darn BBQ in Long Beach. Period. End of sentence. End of paragraph. End of chapter. End of book. Put that book away, and go get yourself some barbecue from Robert Earl's. And don't you dare miss out on the cornbread either.

Yelp
What used to be my families favorite BBQ Spot, has sadly DISAPPOINTED. On July 2, my family wanted to try an array of meats in order to see exactly what we wanted to order for our 4th of July celebration. We ordered the three meat platter: Pork ribs, rib tips, and brisket with a side of Mac & Cheese, beef links, and baked beans which totaled over $60. Here is our experience: The initial issue is that we were given a 35-45 minute wait time in which we waited an 1 hour and 15 minutes. Once we received the food I glanced to make sure everything was there but could not decipher which was what because it was all thrown together in one foil saturated in BBQ sauce. Once we arrived home and started to make plates we noticed the brisket was missing. We contacted the business in which they requested a picture of the food, and after a back & forth about what exactly was on the plate (insinuating that we were lying about the missing meat), we were then offered to pick up the missing brisket. We did not. Ribs: Tender but fatty. The BBQ sauce was delicious. Rib Tips: Dry/Tough. Mac & Cheese: Noodles were overcooked, garlicky, did not like at all. Beef Links: Great. Baked Beans: Tasted straight like vinegar. A big disappointment as these are my favorite. Unfortunately, we will not support Robert Earl's anymore. They don't take card payment, wait times are ridiculous, and the customer service needs major improvements.

Yelp
I love this place. It takes a little long to prepare the food but I think it's worth the wait.

Yelp
I don't expect much service in general, much less at a really good BBQ spots. But this place is weak. Wait is forever and then the flavor is disappointing. Overall the inside is as welcoming as a check cashing place. You can try it...don't say I didn't warn you.

Yelp
I've never been disappointed about the food I've gotten here! It's all to go orders . Their portions are adequate. I'll continue to patronize this establishment unless they price me out. I highly recommend!!!.....B Harper

Yelp
The beef ribs and the brisket were seasoned perfectly. They had the sauce on the side which was perfect! The staff was very friendly. They had a nice seating area outside where you can people watch and enjoy the sun.

Yelp
Great service, Love the Barbecue, potato salad, greens, had that today. I been a customer for a few years you name it had slabs ect great .

Yelp
This is a re-rating after Covid-19. Robert Earl has come a ways since my first review many years ago. Since then they have gone online. It has taken, like many businesses during Covid-19, mor that a few tries to get it right. The food as always is still excellent. The sauce is #1 like it should be. The meats are seasoned and cooked to perfection.
google avatar

John P.

Yelp
I don't know how to rate this place. Robert Earls has been my favorite barbecue in Southern California but damn the service is atrocious. I've now been waiting 45 minutes for my order. Previous visits I've waited but never this long. There were two orders ahead of me and they were served 15 minutes ago. If you want great tasting Texas style barbecue then Robert Earls can't be beat but be prepared to spend an afternoon because service does not serve you or this restaurant with any swiftness. Perhaps next time I'll go to Lucilles or Dave's where I get tableside service.

Yelp
LEGIT!!! Best soul food in the LBC!!! Hubby wanted a good hot link, we got that and then some!!! All sides and dessert were 10/10! BBQ on point and the sauce was so good!

Yelp
Too slow. The bbq sauce is not good got spicy and it's too hot. Got mac and cheese and beans no flavor, for the time waited over 30 minutes not worth it. I will give it one more chance calling my order in advance and getting the brisket with mild sauce.

Yelp
Very good flavor on the beef brisket the owner is very friendly and humble will definitely return

Yelp
Never again! Submitted an online order, and after submitted, I was advised that it would be an hour. Came to pick my order up after 1 hour and was not ready.I had to wait an additional . After waiting an additional hour, my order was still not ready. I finally canceled and asked for a refund.

Yelp
I saw this list of Black-Owned businesses and wanted to give this place a go. Here was my experience on a Saturday afternoon. Parking: Street parking/neighborhood parking. Seating: Not sure. It was under renovation also in COVID-19 pandemic, they seemed to have seating inside and outside but I'll get back to you on this. Feels: Not exactly a downtown but a small little strip of popping businesses. The spot itself is a corner restaurant, just look for the BBQ pictures. Once you enter it gives it a southern, cabin picnic vibe. You'll have random steel art and decor and kitchen radio playing some hip-hop vibes. It's limited right now due to COVID-19 but looks like a good place to eat with family and watch a game. FOOD: Mini Texas Sampler (Brisket, Ribs, Beef Link, Chicken) + 2 Sides All cooked well, juicy, flavorful, and a delightful smoky taste. For that Southern BBQ taste, this is your vibe. There was a choice of mild and sweet and spicy sauce on or on the side, we had ours on the side. The spicy was splendidly tangy with a good kick. The beans and potato salad were great compliments. CUSTOMER SERVICE: Excellent. Friendly peeps. They updated us with the order as it was getting ready. TL; DR OVERALL: 4.5 Stars. Reasonably priced, great choices, delicious food. The location was good and the choices were simple. With a solid price and food so good, expect me to come back. Especially for that catfish stuff. Tips: * Order via online or on the spot

Gloria P.

Yelp
This is a hole in the wall Barbrque joint, With pretty good barbecue. Take out only. Ordered the Texas Sampler. All the meats delicious. Will feed a small party. The two sides I picked greens and baked beans were very average. No flavor to greens, beans better. Service polite, wait time for order reasonable. Probably better to order on line for pickup. I will remember them when I want barbecue.

Yelp
I POSTED MY FULL REVIEW ON GOOGLE. HERE ARE THE SCREENSHOTS AND ALSO A REVIEW FROM SOMEONE ELSE WHO HAD EATEN HERE!! Original post: This raggedy business advertises that they're open until 8:30 PM at night, and they close whenever they "" sell out. The problem is ", they won't notify people when they sell out they'll just take your money, disrespect you when you come to the restaurant expecting your order, and then harass you for hours until you give the owner of the restaurant what he wants. Which is basically to disrespect you. In DO not eat here!

Yelp
BBQ IS DELICIOUS! It's all about the Sauce! Owner is a very nice guy. Definitely must try it & they have good specials of the day sometimes so look out for those & get ready to lick your fingertips
