The Best Restaurants Along California’s Central Coast, According to Eater Editors | Eater LA

"Don’t make assumptions when entering the retro Oceano diner shaped like a train car. This 1950s-style diner serves all of the standards: burgers, milkshakes, onion rings, French toast, and BLTs, along with Greek dishes like dolmades, gyros, and moussaka. Every dish is well-executed, surpassing most expectations for diner fare. Opt for the chile verde dinner platter or burritos in a setting that kids (and adults) will love." - Mona Holmes

Thoroughly impressed on our first visit to the Rock & Roll Diner. The owner and his staff were friendly, welcoming and accommodating to our party of 15 wedding guests for brunch on a Sunday morning! He even allowed us to celebrate the couple with mimosas and brought us the glasses ❤ The atmosphere is exceptionally clean and quaint, decorated with decades of memorabilia. The train cars sit atop their original tracks and outside is beautifully landscaped. Now for the food... there is an abundance of options for breakfast/lunch/dinner from traditional options to those with a California and/or Southwestern flare. I went with the California omelet and country potatoes and was not disappointed. The omelet was fluffy and stuffed full of veggies, bacon and melted cheese. It was topped with avocado and the potatoes were creamy with a crisp outside. The portions are massive and you walk away either stuffed or with left overs! If you have never been, make this your next stop, if not just for a delicious bite to eat but to take in all the amazing sights!

Got a new discovery today! I wasnt sure if I would like to try for my brunch hunt reviews. But this is actually an awesome place! The kind of diner’s I have wanting to experience! Here’s my review: Pancakes: i have tried the best pancake before thats really fluffy and just melts, so I would give this only ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 it’s not bad Bacon: Easy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 they did it perfectly. Not greasy. When I asked for crispy, it is crispy. Egg: though eggs look like easy to make, it’s not. I wanted mine over-medium but it’s quite close so it’s ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 The staffs are great. Fast service. I love the interiors of this adaptive-reuse of a train car!

I stopped in for a quick bite. I would come again for the atmosphere for the entertainment of eating in derailed train car. I wanted to love this place, but as soon as I walked in I was not so “greeted” by an unfriendly face. She had two other tables and was in the weeds. I quickly ordered my food as she seemed inpatient. I ordered the tri tip plate. I was nervous because this seemed like the kind of place that has so many food options, food gets over processed. I was right. Bad idea. The best thing on the plate was the chili beans, the tri tip was God awful, over cooked way too much Worcestershire way too much salt, the mashed potatoes where runny possibly box potatoes idk. The gravy had been sitting in too long and my food was cold. Except for the trip tip which may have been microwaved. The salsa was awful as well, the tomatoes were sinking and soggy. Anyway. Never mind I would never go back. One positive thing because I hate to make bad reviews on restaurants the restroom was super clean ! The server didn’t ask me how my food was and then she was very sweet by saying thank you as I stood up to leave, when I was finished.

Google
Rock & Roll Diner is a cool railroad car diner, but the menu is trying to do too much, in my opinion. Breakfast all day would be ideal. We tried to customize a burger with their black bean patty and lettuce wrapped, but didn’t come out too well. The bean patty was more like falafel. The clam strips were good. I’ll have to try again, for breakfast, cause that’s what we wanted, but hopefully better next time.

Friend was physically shoved to the ground and were verbally attacked by the workers because they showed up with a camera and ask nicely to record them making there food but instead of them saying yes they said no got loud and aggressive in his face and told to leave after telling the man multiple times to "calm down man were leaving" the one worker proceeded to put hand on the young man and shove him to the ground then the workers instead realizing there co-workers in the wrong gang together to press the matter more. So be careful where you go to eat because they will attack you there

Google
Great food and super friendly staff. Seeing reviews saying the staff is aggressive makes me really confused. All were very nice and welcoming. Food is always great here. Been here about 5 times and will continue to come back!

Google
I had a terrible experience at this restaurant. A rude, aggressive staff member, who was noticeably overweight, shouted at me when I returned my burger, which was practically raw despite my request for it to be well done. The service was appalling, and I felt disrespected throughout the interaction. I strongly recommend avoiding this place due to the unprofessional behavior and poor food quality.

Google
This diner is incredibly endearing with so much history and character as well as a varied menu and attentive servers. I was seated right away and checked on regularly. I was there for Sunday brunch and had a very good vegetable burrito with home fries and champagne. I left very satisfied and charmed by the whole experience.

Yelp
I love this place. The staff is awesome and the food is amazing! I highly recommend the spanakopita dish. I travel to this area for work often. I could eat here everyday during my trips and often do!

Yelp
I've driven past this establishment a few times and made it a point to return, so I did. Arriving at noon on a Saturday was dicey but to my surprise it wasn't busy...yet, being seated was a snap and coffee was soon at my table along with two different menus one for food and the other for drinks. Once more I find myself at the coast and a desire of seafood came over me much like a wave on a sandy beach, with my bifocal sunglasses on (sigh) I navigated the menu and settled in on a crab melt with a side of fries and a cup of clam chowder. The first wave of food came in the form of the ever popular cup of chowder and I must say they didn't scrimp on the clams, with a few oyster crackers sprinkled on top I soon began my journey through the sea to the island of Yum. The voyage with filled with beautiful scenery as I was finishing my creamy cup-o-chowder the server delivered the crab melt that I was anticipating while enjoying every spoonful of chowder, with a side of ranch dressing and a squirt of ketchup I paddled through a few French fries before tackling the melt and as a lover of garlic the first bite was as if I found a treasure of flavor. By now the restaurant was filling up with new passengers and it seemed my timing was perfect and my voyage was about to end I must say the experience was worth the travel from Fresno and the drive back was a bit more pleasant with the memories of an excursion to an iconic restaurant on the coast

Yelp
Service was so good. All the food came out fast and tasting very well. I loved the feel of this diner it has been our third time there. We are locals from the area. Portions are excellent and way worth the money.

Yelp
Whenever I'm rolling through Pismo I stop here at this time capsule of the 50s. It has typical 50s food and ambiance is so fun. It's very much worth the visit. Staff is also very friendly and responsive.

Yelp
First off some places don't do beef ribs right. These are spot on. Great meal at such a reasonable price. Can't go wrong with any of the meals.

Yelp
This is such a fun stop if you are traveling through the area. The train cars turned diner brings back all the old school memories with fun memorabilia all over. Quaint and fun. Service was good, everyone was welcoming. They have a decent menu, lots of options to include shakes and desserts. Fun stop to grab lunch and your favorite shake!

Yelp
The Rock and Roll Diner is my first diner in over a year. Moving to California has put a squash on the diner scene. There are some, but no state will ever be as good as New Jersey. Anyway, I was excited to find a small diner up the Central Coast. Little did I know what I found. Outside, a large sign said: voted the best restaurant on the Central Coast. Neat! Rock and Roll Diner Atmosphere: If you are looking for the most authentic diner in California, it might be the Rock and Roll Diner. It's located in a vast train car on the side of the road. You won't find a more authentic diner than that. The inside has plenty of memorabilia with not an inch of wall uncovered. There are probably 20-30 booths in total and plenty of seating. I could see it getting crowded on weekends for breakfast and lunch. Rock and Roll Diner Food: The Rock and Roll Diner menu has everything you expect and wants in a diner. I stopped around lunchtime and was in the mood for pancakes. The Rock and Roll Diner lunch and dinner menu also has several options, and it was hard to stick to breakfast. That's what I came in for. Some of the Rock and Roll Diner menu items that stuck out to me were: Biscuits n' Gravy Combo: Two buttermilk biscuits topped with our homemade country sausage gravy, two eggs any style, and two bacon strips Seafood Omelet: Bay shrimp, krab, tomatoes, bell peppers, onions, & jack cheese topped with fresh avocado Old West Cinnamon Rolls I decided on the large stack of pancakes plus an old West cinnamon roll (with frosting). I always think pancakes are risky because they will either be amazing or thin and gross. And in the 400 US diners I've been to, I've had many variations of both. These pancakes were good. They were not the biggest pancakes I've had, but they were enough to be filling. The cinnamon roll was super tasty and dense. It was more of a loaf than a roll, but otherwise good. I'm a huge fan of the cinnamon roll so if you stop by you have to get one, with the frosting! Service: My food was ready quickly, and the hostess was friendly. Honestly, what more do you need in a diner? Cost: $$$ My pancakes and cinnamon rolls were $19, which was more expensive than I anticipated, but the food was good, and I have no complaints. Overall Thoughts/Would I Come Back to the Rock and Roll Diner? Yes, I enjoyed the food and the vibes, and it's a short stop away from Pismo Beach. In all, I am a big fan, and I hope to get back again soon, I just wish it wasn't so expensive.  The Rock and Roll lunch and dinner menu looks just as good so I would love to get back during that time.

Yelp
The clam chowder was rich with lots of clams and vegetables, the salad was fresh and the clam strips were crispy. The French fries were seasoned, which was unexpected. The decor is fun and the service was good.

Yelp
i got served raw chicken and they tried to make me pay full price for it. after we complained they yelled at us to get the hell out

Yelp
I was so excited to try this old train car vintage style diner but was greatly disappointed. Both the food and service were awful. My husband ordered a steak sandwich and I had Greek plate both were not edible - also tried a chocolate milkshake it was soft serve with milk so bland. Do not recommend !!

Yelp
First time coming here after driving past it for the past 16 years. It is a cute and fun little place with a lot of history behind those two real train cars. There are American bbq options, American classic, Mexican, and Greek food options (I'm told the owner is Greek). We both had burgers and the meat was flavored just right with the char and spices. I asked for the onions to be grilled and they did them perfectly on my burger. The waitress was personable (I didn't get her name) and we enjoyed the camaraderie we established with her. Love the 50s themes inside. This place is a must for travelers and locals.

Yelp
We love this place. Everything we've had here we loved. Recently had the falafel wrap (vegan). So good! Fresh ingredients. Great flavor all around. The owners are Greek so you know all their Greek food is amazing. But we've also enjoyed their other menu items.

Yelp
My man flew me to Oceano for a camping adventure at the airport. There's a campground near the beach, where planes were parked. We walked less than a block away to this super cool 50's train/diner. We were pleasantly surprised at how good our meal was! We shared a Greek Appetizer - warm pita bread with two different dips, hummus and tzatziki sauce. They were both a little bland, but it was tasty nonetheless. I think I was starving at this point. My dish came with the Greek Salad. The veggies were surprisingly fresh at 4 or 5 pm, like it was just picked from the farm. I'm always wary about restaurants with extensive menus. I was relieved they didn't over do it with the dressing! The Gyro Pita was pretty good. However, the lamb was kinda rubbery. It was tasty since it was marinated with good stuff, but the meat wasn't fresh or tender. The veggies inside the Gyro was at least. On the other hand, the Greek Burger was outstanding! Now there's the juicy meat! I enjoyed the burger much more than the gyro. Service was quick and friendly, maybe because we were there at an odd time. There was a rush after 5, but we were already done. Overall food was better than I expected.

Yelp
Delicious dinner. Cozy and quaint atmosphere. Very varied menu! Not disappointed!! Come on in and see what you think...

Yelp
This is an old-timey 50s diner created from an old train car. The place is draped with pictures and cutouts of 50's era icons including Marilyn Monroe and James Dean. Along the interior sides are pictures, signs, and a timeline highlighting events that occured in that decade. The seating, trim, and ceiling is a vintage cherry red. The 50s ambience is there, no doubt about it. Above the pictures is a section tiled with business cards. For you younger readers out there business cards were something that us working folk would use to get our names & profession out there, basically a tool for networking. This was before LinkedIn became a thing ;-) I got the Country Fried Steak plate for around $18. The steak was prepared well; crispy on the outside and tender meatyness inside. The mashed potatoes had good texture that indicates freshness. My wife & I were quite impressed with the flavor of the gravy - this gravy was way better than that from the other place I reviewed last week. The plate also included a helping of vegetables and a toasted butter roll. Both were decent. I don't know if it was because I had a small breakfast that morning, or because I was still experiencing munchie symptoms from the previous night's leisure activities, but I scarfed that whole plate down. And the portion wasn't even miniscule! My wife got the gyro plate at around $15. I took a couple bites and it tasted fine. It came with french fries. Although hot & crispy I thought they were a bit oversalted. No biggie though, for I just rubbed the fry along the plate's edge to remove any excess salt before eating. This is a cool place to stop at when cruising down PCH, or if you're vacationing nearby. Their menu is vast with many other selections that look very enticing. It's definitely worthy of another visit next time we're in the area.

Isabel S.

Yelp
Very cute restaurant in an old train car but the food and drinks were not good. The toast was hardly toasted and the pancakes were rubbery.

Yelp
Food was great. Service was great as well staff aren't very talkative but they are tentative. The place is great as well a little small so if you have a big family you won't be able to all sit together. Overall it was a great place to eat.

Yelp
I came here with a group of 8 people since my friends and I were taking a weekend trip in the area. We found this place on Google maps since it is very close to our Airbnb and we absolutely love the ambiance and the 1950's aesthetic of this place. Although it is a small place inside, they were really quick to rearrange our tables and fit a group of 8. The staff were friendly and took all our orders quickly. Once the food came around, our group finished everything because it was just that good! I ordered the huevos rancheros and thought the salsa with cheese complimented the eggs and tortilla very well. I also really liked the strawberry milkshake and loved how it came in a 50's milkshake glass. Overall I would recommend coming here if you are looking for a cute 50's themed diner.

Yelp
We had been to the Rock & Roll Diner in the past. It is very unique and a fun place to check out since it's very different. It's inside an Amtrak train car. Fun to see but really difficult to have conversation with others if the place is full. My husband ordered cheese enchiladas and instead of the rice and beans, he had them top it with mashed potatoes. He said the cheese enchiladas weren't very good. He figured the enchlada sauce was a canned topping but he did eat them. I ordered the 3 sample BBQ plate. We smelled the BBQ as we walked in and it smelled so good. However, there wasn't much on the plate. Actually, there was NO meat at all on the rib bones -- none. It was smathered (not a word, I know) in BBQ sauce so you could lick the bone I guess. The 1/4 chicken (or chicken leg & thigh) was the smallest chicken piece I'd ever seen. The leg was tiny and the thigh part almost non-existent. The tri-tip was thin but good. The chili beans served with it was no different than a can of chili you might open at home. The mashed potatoes are real but no flavor. It was almost as if they were watered down. Service was good and servers were friendly.

Yelp
My family and friends have been regular breakfast patrons here since the beginning. we love the "train" and the owner is always pleasant. The last time we had breakfast, during Christmas week, we all noticed a decline in the food quality. As I'm writing this, I'm feeling a bit bad because we love this place so much. I just hope the owner sees this and addresses the issue. We hope to be back soon.

Yelp
hooligan christian told me to rate it 5 stars. so basically i loved it and christain loved it too.

Yelp
We split the Pancake Combo for breakfast and it was solid. The atmosphere was pretty cool too. Juke box with diner music.

Yelp
Amazing service and amazing food. Very unique place to eat breakfast. Gives a retro and nostalgic vibe. Love how it was a 5 min walk from where we were staying.

Yelp
Great place with a much better menu than any diner I've been to. Decor is fun to look at. Our party of 7 had one train car all to ourselves on a Wednesday night. Recommend: Lamb shank. Delicious, huge portion. My son loved every bite of it. Everything was tasty.
google avatar

Tyler S.

Yelp
Cute little diner with average food at best. The service is solid but good luck having a meal for less than $20
google avatar

Nora R.

Yelp
Nice location, fun looking place to visit, decently good food, and friendly staff. The restrooms are outside in the back, not sure if there is an accessible way to get to them for people with physical limitations because from what I saw there's tall stairs to go down to the back. But in the front there is a ramp to get into the train/restaurant. A lot of options to choose from on the menu, all diner type food. No complaints
google avatar

Linda L.

Yelp
I like that they have a wide variety of food. The food and service was good. Warning the juke box on the table doesn't work.
google avatar

Lilianna J.

Yelp
Very awesome place. Staff very smiley and a few flies. The music player doesn't work but that's okay. Overall great place with some great vibes
google avatar

Marisol S.

Yelp
My first time here. Really enjoyed my meal. I thought it was awesome that there was a wide variety of food. I ordered off the Greek menu.

Debra E.

Yelp
This is my go to place for a fun experience and Mediterranean food. Mario makes the best combo platter around. Ironic location and love the history in oceano!
google avatar

Marianne B.

Yelp
We stopped for a quick "homecooked" meal. Instead we enjoyed a high end Pasta Oceano dish, which is a new menu item. It was better than any fancy Italian restaurant we've ever tried. Fresh clams in the shell, garlic, wine, mushrooms, pasta, cream etc, just so good. As for the rest of menu, there is something for everyone! Great and attentive service as well. But remember, you're in an antique railroad dining car!
google avatar

Brenda E.

Yelp
Converted train car dining with an attempt to take you back to the 50's. The covered with business cards wall/ceiling was different and really took away from a clean feeling setting. There was a lot of space at the table for two which was nice. We didn't wait long to be seated. Wait staff was not overly friendly and when questioned about a substitution side with the breakfast selected (another menu item) "It comes how it is - that's it" was the repeated response even with an offer to pay more. Eggs Benedict, my go-to always, fell short of ok. By far the worst I've ever had. The kicker was the chicken fried steak of my other half - save your money and buy microwaveable breaded steak and a packet of knorr brown gravy mix. Everything tasted pre-cooked and reheated/old. The hash browns had an almost sour-ish tinge that to me identifies old oil or old food. Not anywhere near the $50+ spent. (Be careful of added "fees" on your bill) Will not return. Side note: would stop there to use the restroom - they were clean and had a sign that both confused and entertained my warped mind.

Yelp
kindest people alive. If you're on the hunt for a dining experience that feels like a warm hug, look no further. Whether you're here for a special occasion or just a casual night out, this is a place where you can count on delicious food, a welcoming environment, and exceptional service. It's no wonder this place has a dedicated following. If you haven't visited yet, make sure to stop by--your taste buds and your heart will thank you!

Yelp
My wife and I stopped in after we drove by and the place caught our eye. So fun and unique. We enjoyed our burgers and malts and the old timey feel!
google avatar

Dennette S.

Yelp
Heading to the beach today we passed by a diner that is inside of a couple of old trains, the inside was full of memorabilia and such old and kind of new music. Perfect for our family that where ages from 8 to 78. We were seated in our own section and the service was spot on. Quick to be seated and just the right amount of time to let us ponder the menu. This menu has so many choices. I loved the kids could get fish and chips, while others could have a burger, fettuccine Alfredo, clam chowder and even many Greek food choices. Many of our dinners came with a salad, everyone was very happy with their choices. No complaints, from anyone-so that makes it a great dining experience. Thank you to our wonderful server and the kitchen for being so quick to get our meals to us all, hot and together. Next time we are there, we will be giving the breakfast a try
google avatar

Alex L.

Yelp
It's a diner inside a train cart! Super unique. I came here for breakfast on a Sunday and thought the experience was quaint, but the service did leave a little to be desired. I had the huevos rancheros with the home fries and the food was pretty good. You're mostly coming here for the ambiance, but the food is actually decent too. If you're a large party, you might not be super comfortable in the smaller train car booths, but either way it will be an experience and a memory. Highly recommend checking it out!

April P.

Yelp
The menu is huge!!! But you don't need it. Just order the Greek salad with salmon (bomb!) ask for lemons too , I use them o er the dressing but that's pretty good too
google avatar

Kelsey G.

Yelp
Such a cool Diner! It is much bigger than I expected and the walls are covered with cards and cool posters. Music fits the setting perfect. Food was a normal diner environment. I had an egg burger and it was perfectly cooked. My boyfriend had the meat loaf and he loved it.
google avatar

Sylvia A.

Yelp
Not what it says it is the quality of the food was nasty had a Chili bean hotdog beans are horrible they taste like can beans also on our order we had another hotdog and it only had a pinch of onions our zucchini where really dark and greasy almost burnt not good at all burger was very plain not good the worst food !!!
google avatar

Jeremy M.

Yelp
Man oh man this place was good. The server was very nice and respectful and the food was great and the best part was I came here on my birthday and they did a great job. The burger was juicy and the onion rings were perfect! Also the ranch was good and zesty I ended up putting it on my burger definitely want to go back. It was great. Thanks to our server. I should've gotten his name but he went above and beyond

Yelp
Awesome authentic Greek cuisine, highly recommended. And the ambiance is straight out of the 50's.

Yelp
Horrible! Bad food rude waitress. My daughter ordered gravy & biscuits. They used fake bacon bits. $16. She ate two pieces of bacon 2 eggs one bite of biscuits and gravy. Sent back. They comped $5.???? Ridiculous! All by waitress that was rude to begin with.
google avatar

Sally P.

Yelp
Came here for a Sunday lunch because it looked like a neat experience. The train is nice to be in but the seats are a bit dated and are sinking in so it was hard to get comfortable. The staff is extremely nice and are very attentive. The food is good, nothing exceptional but also not bad and no big complaints. I got the posole, which was decent. I wish it had more heat personally, but the flavors were there. We also had the eggs Benedict and the poached egg was a bit overdone.

Garnett P.

Yelp
Service was great. Arrived be for the crowd on a weekend. Pretty busy but not crazy. Food was good nothing crazy just a good solid breakfast.

M S.

Yelp
We used to love this place and always came while we are in town. This visit was not good at all. We got more service from the busboy than the snotty, unprofessional, and debating waitress. She was too busy preparing to go orders rather than serve the few customers eating in the restaurant.Upcharged us without telling us and then was rude and condescending when we brought it to her attention. So disappointing for a place we used to look forward coming to.
google avatar

Shannon T.

Yelp
Absolutely ridiculous service. I can't believe it takes over 35 minutes to wait for their food after ordering. Half of us got served and were finished before I even got mine. Didn't know it takes that long to make an omelette and not know the common courtesy of bringing everyone's food out together.... let's not mention that the only thing they brought me was toast after 35 minutes and not even the omelet.
google avatar

Jessica O.

Yelp
Updating my review again after a year long hiatus. I was truly hoping maybe things improved with the gap of time, but this place has literally the WORST customer service in five cities. Expansive menu with a lot of great things that would be nice to try, but tonight when placing our takeout order the woman hung up on us SIX times. Do NOT expect the Greek woman here to help or even want your business. We have been trying to support this local business on and off for fifteen year and they just fail. Tourist trap with expensive prices and again, the worst service.

Georgina R.

Yelp
The ribeye and bacon wrapped shrimp was SOOO tender and delicious. The pastrami melt was really fatty though.

Yelp
Food was delicious n service was friendly. Will deff be back. Went with the whole family n we had a great time
