CBS TV Star Jay Harrington Secretly Runs a Santa Monica Pizza Joint | Eater LA

"I like that this colorful Wilshire Boulevard pizzeria and pub is a family-friendly neighborhood spot where owner Jay Harrington—yes, the trim, silver-haired actor from S.W.A.T.—is often bussing tables, pulling pints, running pizzas to tables, and hovering near the kitchen. He bought the place after being a regular because he didn’t want anyone to tinker with the model; since taking over he’s kept it affordable and unpretentious, refusing to jack up prices or pursue a liquor license so the vibe stays what it is, offering only beer and wine and game-day deals like half-priced baskets of wings and pitchers of (domestic) beer. The decor is an enduring mishmash of music paraphernalia, hand-painted artwork, stickers, neon signs, and televisions left by the previous owner, and the staff—including executive chef Pedro Méndez and front-of-house Jacqie Lopez and Tanner Pierce—have largely stuck with him through the transition. Regulars come for two slices and a beer or a glass of wine multiple times a week, and though the place sits in the shadow of higher-end neighbors like Rustic Canyon, Citrin, and Mélisse, it remains meaningful to its customers and employees; it’s open daily from noon to midnight at 1120 Wilshire Boulevard." - Farley Elliott

Artist Pays Tribute to Anthony Bourdain With a Huge Santa Monica Mural | Eater LA

"This local pizza company has multiple locations that display murals by Jonas Never, including a commissioned tribute to Linkin Park’s Chester Bennington after his 2017 death. The artist’s work across the chain is realistic, nostalgic, and tailored to each site, and he personally paid for at least some of these memorial murals." - Mona Holmes

This place is incredible. I love the interior if you’re into rock and roll Classic Rock great pictures and one of the best $20 deals in town with no further. Atmosphere is like that of a bar which they have but when it comes to the pizza and the salad, my favorite deal is two slices of salad and then I ordered a soda but if you order a draft beer, the total deal is $20 but if you drink soda? The seating is incredibly comfortable. I did not have to wait very long for my food. The salad is crunchy delicious and I ordered blue cheese dressing, but my two choices for pizza? Out for the classes so I’d have one slice of sausage one slice of pepperoni. If you can find parking steal it, this is the place to go to. Oh my God the pizza is delicious. It is beautiful Chris. Cool music great artwork… I wish I could stay here forever. The pizza slices are perfect and they make each bite welcome the next bite!

Google
Always passed by this spot and finally had an opportunity to try it out. With the name Rock N Pies, I thought of cool rock music and deep dish pizza. There was no rock music but the spot was cool and decorative. It gave off more of a pub vibe. Please note, there was no deep dish🥲. The best thing we ordered were the garlic fries. Yummy. We had wings too. Those weren’t so good. It seemed as if they were drenched in hot sauce and tossed on the plate. As for our pizza, we had the 20 inch white stripes. It’s a great idea for a pizza if it had quality ingredients. I couldn’t get over the crust. Tasted like cardboard. If you’re going for a beer and sports, it’s a good spot but don’t expect quality pizza.

Google
Great vibe on a Friday evening, games on the TV's smiles on faces. we shared some hot wings and a pie. we chose our toppings on the 16-inch pizza and will recommend this place to everyone. this has become our goto pizza place. service is amazing, Tanner is very attentive and personable. we have started to get two slices and drink special. fries or salad go very well and round off the meal. thank you, Jay, for a great local spot to hang out and have a slice.

The parking sign in the back says that businesses will validate. But you weirdly have to pay first. The waiter did not know how to validate; he gave me a QR code and told me he didn't know how it worked. (That may or may not be his or the business owner's fault). It was $12 for 1.5 hours, which is kinda steep. He flippantly apologized for the situation and took my kid's $4 ice cream off the bill, and acted as if he was a hero. He should have at least called his boss to figure out the process. I only tipped him 15%. Many would have stiffed him. I know--I've waited tables before. Had he taken $12 off the bill, I would have been totally satisfied and tipped him handsomely. I got back to my car and there was a ticket there anyways! For $88.50! (Or $52 if I pay in 5 days). (I've attached both pics). I went back in to discuss this with the waiter--the owners were not present--and told him that I want his owners to deal with the issue. I was pissed. He was pissed at me because I only tipped him 15%. He told me that it wasn't his owner's problem and that he was doing me "a solid" by relaying the information. I told him that it may not be their fault, but it was their problem. It was going to affect their business. It was going to affect his tips. He said that the owner's have no power. I argued that, collectively, the owner's of the businesses in the building have considerable leverage over the building owner, particularly because Santa Monica businesses are leaving left and right. Tenants are completely in control right now. Vacancies are everywhere. Just a terribly disappointing experience for a place that I used to like. I won't be back. But I do hope this helps the business learn something as I don't want to see more restaurants crumble around here.

Google
Cool pizza place if you like east coast style pizza. Got the '2 Slice+Beer' special which was two slices of pepperoni or plain pizza and any beer for $15.00 (not bad for a half of a regular pizza pie and a glass of Guinness). Parking is somewhat difficult due to Rock N Pies location on Wilshire (metered parking available on Wilshire Blvd.). There is plenty of seating available: at the bar, spacious booths, and some seating outside. Television sets are placed throughout the restaurant set to either sports or a movie channel. It got busier as I was leaving. Murals of music groups adorn the walls inside. Definitely would come back.

Ejay M.

Google
Love this place! Always plays great music and the service is phenomenal. The pizza resembles an east coast style, as the owners and many of the people behind the curtain are from the east. They also stay open pretty late which is rare.

One of my favorite off the beaten path pizza joints in LA. Great sports bar vibe with good pizza and fair drink prices. Fun ambiance and art work.

Google
Just had me the 2 slice + draft. My slices were good and crispy, they have plenty of beer to choose from. Enthusiastic service with amazing music taste. An all good vibey spot to go to.

Yelp
Great neighborhood pizza joint! Decided to give this place a try and was not disappointed! The ingredients were awesome and we had trouble choosing between the signatures pies as all of them sounded incredible. We ended up going with half purple haze and half appetite for destruction. They're both super tasty - my only critique on the pizza was the dough was slightly under seasoned. The staff is super welcoming and friendly and we will definitely be back. Don't sleep on the wings!

Yelp
If you're looking for a great slice of pizza, then this is not it. I had a cheese slice and a sausage slice for $11. Unfortunately, neither were very good. The service was good and friendly. No problems there. The ambiance is casual and loud (like a rock show) and it was giving more of a bar vibe than pizza/by/the-slice vibe. That's probably why most people go there- to drink. They had karaoke there, though, so that is probably fun.

Mark W.

Yelp
Hours interesting so look before you go, wish they were open earlier for lunch. Make sure you validate parking in the back. I like the deals, 2 slices and a beer. Slices are nice and big and with a good amount of toppings. Caesar salad is the right price. Music is usually solid, pretty sure that the workers build the playlists. Good spot for sport watching, not crowded enough that you often can choose a sport if it's not on. Has wi-fi, which I like, but not common for a sports/pizza spot.

Yelp
I implore you to allow your hunger to seek refuge with this scrumptious pie (or any other from their menu). Feast thy gaze upon the 20" Appetite For Destruction. Perfection wouldn't provide the necessary justice required by adjectives to describe this pie. Crust? A supreme combination of fluffy and crispy. Ingredients? A divine freshness and aroma to couple the immaculate grandiloquence that is the pie itself. I must ask ... nay - beg you to not waste any more of that precious cash on any other establishment.
google avatar

Marketa K.

Yelp
Hidden gem! Love coming here with friends to share large pizzas and great beers on tap, also good for a family dinner. Love the comfy booths. Oh and the Caesar salad with homemade dressing is a must!!!

Yelp
Wasn't a fan of the pizza but the buffalo wings were absolutely fire would recommend. The staff was also cool, the guy with the face tats was pretty chill and helpful. The vibe inside was laid back with a couple of groups of friends and some solos around the bar.

Yelp
I suppose this is fine. 2x slices and a coke for $12 dollars is nothing to sneeze at. Ordered the cheese and pepperoni. Both were decently large sized. Both were also greasy and floppy. Undercarriage had no discernible char. I was left somewhat hanging .

Yelp
Love the ambiance. Has a nice retro rock aesthetic with a touch of East coast pizza joint, crossed with a hint of 50's diner. It's airy and fun. Service is decently. As a hardcore Boston pizza lover, there are very few places I can recommend in LA for parlor pizza (not the fancy Italian pizza restaurants, but slice joints). Rock'n Pies is ok. Slices are average compared to back home, and the meatballs appie is pretty decent. But there is one item on this menu that I will always come back here for: their signature "Appetite for Destruction" pizza is a class of its own. It is a meat-lovers pizza, with bacon, sausage and pepperoni, BUT with some sex juice.... a touch of balsamic reduction drizzle. This changes everything. It's like discovering that you have remove the plastic from cheese slices before you make a grilled cheese sandwich. This balsamic tweak just makes the pizza amazeballs! Who comes to a restaurant for one dish? I do. I can't tell you how many restaurants are ok, except for the ONE dish to rule them all. At Rock'n Pies.... even my deacon will attest, it is hondo hands down the Appetite for Destruction.

Yelp
Just the worst experience I've had here in years. Never had a problem here from way back when it was NY & C. But tonight, a server tossed my 2 slices of pizza to go that was in a to-go box on the bar, while I was in the men's room. Okay, fine, a misunderstanding, I said give me one slice to go since I had been eating part of the slices while I was finishing my beer. Server brought out a slice for me to go, but the attitude he gave me was ridiculous. He said he was giving me a "free slice" even though I ate most of the 2 slices. He said I should get the f*** out of there and never come back since I was complaining. The guy was so rude that I will take him up on his suggestion and never come back. Sorry Brian, Jane, Russell & other regulars, but i won't be back.

Yelp
The pizza is phenomenal here! I highly recommend it. I come here with my dad a lot and we have a lot of fun, the food is also really good along with the drinks! The service is also very good because they're very friendly and the food arrives very quickly. I highly recommend this place. :3

Yelp
The pizza was delicious. The only thing that was weird was how we ordered our food. We sat down and had to wait a while until the waiter was free. The waiter was also bar tending. Which was why it may have been confusing to us. Other than that, the food was great. Oh, and when we were done eating, no one came to give us our check so we were confused as to where to pay. and had to ask for it ourselves. it was just a confusing experience but the food and staff were nice!

Yelp
The place over all is great. Our order was promptly taken and our food came out quickly. (They weren't to busy). The place is filled with rock memorabilia, and album covers in the restroom. We ordered two pies and wings. The wings were the star of the show. Juicy and the buffalo sauce was on point. The pepperoni pizza was fantastic. The second one not so much. Bacon, pineapple and jalapeño. The pineapple wasn't sweet and the jalapeños weren't spicy at all. What really got me was the beer was warm. My wife and I had ordered a beer each and the beer was slightly cool. I ordered a Guinness and that was pretty much room temp. The food was good but the beer being warm is what is keeping me from Coming back.

Yelp
Pizza was fantastic. Ambiance is great for families or watching a game. Service was super friendly and helpful. Can't wait to go back.
google avatar

Chad J.

Yelp
Glad we decided to stop in for dinner on a Friday night. Not too busy and service was pretty good. The Cesar salad is delicious and their mozzarella sticks and crispy and cheesy. I got the 2 slices + soda for $10 which is a good deal to me. Pizza slices were a lot bigger than I thought too, which was a pleasant surprise. Maybe size does matter!
google avatar

Rob C.

Yelp
Delicious New York Style pizza! Great deal for Santa Monica! Got the two slices and a soda deal! Would recommend
google avatar

Ronald M.

Yelp
Cool spot to grab a beer and pizza and watch a game. They have a lot of TVs throughout the restaurant . You can get 2 slices and a soda for $10 or 2 slices and a beer for $15. Not the best pizza but it's decent. Good service.
google avatar

Brian V.

Yelp
Delicious East Coast style pizza in a place that's designed to look like a concert venue. Cool music themed murals adorn the walls and a rocking soundtrack plays in the background while you eat. The two slices and a beer or soda deal here is really good. There's also a decent craft beer selection, as well as a beer selection in general. I got a meatball slice and a mushroom slice with a craft IPA. This came to $17 before tax and tip ($2 extra for the 'craft'). The pizza was really good. It reminded me of New York style slices from places I used to work at when I was in high school. I would actually love to come back and try one of their specialty pizzas. I wasn't sure if those were available as a slice. The service seem pretty standard. We had a big group, and there was only one maybe two people Kinda, working in the place. But the person was helpful and efficient. There's also TV so you can watch games while you eat and drink. Overall, this place is pretty great and represents a great value I think.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is pretty sweet. If you're a music snob like myself. Loved all the rad posters on the wall - damn I wish I could have seen Rob Zombie and the Melvins at the Santa Monica Civic. The cheese sticks stretch longer than a Phish jam They even have crazy dollar bills on the walls which makes this currency tracking dork happy The staff was cool and the food was pretty decent, I really enjoyed the Purple Haze. Stoked to come back here in the future when I was s slice and some good tunes

Yelp
If you grew up on New York pizza, you'll probably want to skip this place. I've eaten there a couple times, and got takeout (eggplant parmesan) once. Pizza: The crust is just wrong (too dense and too hard) - if you're looking for New York pizza, this isn't it. The sauce is ok, but sort of weak. The toppings are good. I've gotten their pizza by the slice and as a whole pie. The individual slices were better than the pie, which doesn't really make sense, but that was my experience. Eggplant Parm: Nothing special. Greasier than ideal and the spaghetti was overcooked. But this was a takeout order - maybe it would have been better if I'd eaten there. Service is fine, but not particularly friendly. The ambiance is nice - it's a perfectly fine place to sit around. If only the pizza was better. Note: I've been there with non-New Yorkers who seemed to like it much more than I did. I question their taste, but if you have a less-discerning pizza palate, you might like Rock'n Pies more than I did. I chose not to share my opinions with these non-NY friends, because they were happy and there was no reason to rain on their parade. I wouldn't choose to go back to Rock'n Pies on my own, but if I was with other people who really wanted to eat there, I'd probably shut up and eat a slice of not-great pizza.
google avatar

Charles H.

Yelp
They messed up my order and overcharged me, which was understandable cause I had the same name as the other person who they switched my order with. They corrected it but as far as the pizza goes. Many years ago, I had a pizza from this place, that was amazing. I got one of their margarita pizzas And this was like the worst 1970s frozen pizza you could possibly imagine. Six little dots of mozzarella that didn't even really melt into the pizza at all and terrible flavor. Kind of seems like this is just a sports bar that has wings and pizzas now but really cares about making their money on alcohol.
google avatar

Mahtab P.

Yelp
Excellent fresh food! Thin NY style pizza, great garlic knots, and the chopped salad is fantastic! Great music and overall vibe. Can't wait to try Tuesday trivia night!
google avatar

Fred R.

Yelp
Talk about a hidden winner. The food is really good and not expensive. In fact, two slices and a soda for $10 or make it a beer for $5 more is a great start to any night. And you'll be pretty sated! We get the pies and slices on the soft (not crispy) side, both are great. The chicken parm sandwich is REALLY good and the kids love the pasta special. We order a side of meatballs and the 2 year old picky eater devours them, the 6 year old claims they're his favorite in the world. The owner is the kind that will probably come by and ask how's dinner. He wants to know. The guy has this warm smile and is special nice to kids. We go there at least once a month and are always pleased with food, price and great service.

Yelp
Second time here and it's just as good as I remembered......maybe better Good music and good pizza I'm sold

Yelp
This pizza was amazing! I had a veggie slice and a pineapple slice to- go. The customer service was great. Best pizza I've had in a long time.

Yelp
The food and services are amazing. Couldn't find a spot for wings until we came across this place. Mike our server was awesome. It was his first night and he did great!!! Definitely will be back here soon. Highly recommend this place

Robert S.

Yelp
Worst establishment... this is the second time I've ordered from this place and the first time they told me my pizza would be ready in 25 minutes. It took them 45 minutes to have my order ready and it was the wrong order. Gave them the benefit of the doubt, order a second time again, this time it took them 1 hour to have my order ready after they said my order would be ready in 25 minutes again. This place should seriously consider closing their doors down for the horrible service they provide.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been a frequent customer here for the last few years, and I've got nothing but good things to say. First off, the atmosphere at this restaurant is very flexible - there are massive booths for if you want to eat with friends, as well as smaller tables for if you're more of a loner like myself. And if you need a place to sit down and get some work done, the chairs are comfy and firm, and the tables are wide enough to accommodate your materials. The free wi-fi combined with quite a few charging outlets helps as well (admittedly, the outlet availability varies depending on the time. That alone gets this place on my good side, but the food itself puts this place over the moon. They've got a phenomenal $10 2 slice + drink combo, and you can make additional moderations to your slices (like toppings or a side salad) for a very reasonable fee. And if you want to splurge a little more, their chicken parmesan is fantastic. Barring an unforseen circumstances, I'll be coming back here again and again.
google avatar

Ryan R.

Yelp
This is a diamond in the rough. Great ambiance with the 80s Rick memorabilia, the staff is super kind and helpful and the food is great. Everything on tap is awesome but I'm a Guinness guy so it's always the same for me. The buffalo wings and cheese sticks were amazing but didn't get to the pizza which I will next time. Can't wait to come back.
google avatar

Yelp
Great New York, thin slices and no nonsense prices. Great, friendly service and atmosphere here too. If you're into New York pies, come here for a couple of slices and a soda for a cool $10. Fuhgeddaboudit!

Kris J.

Yelp
Love the service we get whenever my me and my friends come. Service is always fast and the staff is always polite.
google avatar

Yelp
This was the closest pizza place to Venice beach that was open later on a Sunday and it was great! I'd say skip the $8 garlic fries but the kettle chips were great and the side salad was also solid! My main issue was that the pizza just had way too much arugula on top and it really overpowered the other flavors. I'd definitely give another pizza a try though because I think this place has great potential! The service was good and the restaurant was dark with lots of rock and roll memorabilia and great music. The prices were also really good for the area.

Yelp
OTM 12/12/21-12/18/21 A very, very generous option for OTM subscribers. You get a free medium (12") pizza that is pretty good. I believe it's a $17 value. Honestly, can't complain for the price! There was an option to add a half Caesar salad with a soda for $4. Of course I couldn't pass that up! The croutons in the salad were unbelievable. To be honest, arguably some of the best that I've ever had. Now, my rating would drop down to a 4 star if I came here without the OTM offer. Why? The pizza lacked a variety of flavors. Also, the cheese fell off too easily on almost every slice that I picked up. Again, the food is pretty good, but not 5 star worthy. There is free parking in the back! I'd also like to add that the gentleman that was serving me was extremely hospitable and respectful.
google avatar

Kamron H.

Yelp
Really solid New York style pizza. Definitely love how the slices are super large too! It has that good gooey cheese with perfect amount of tomato
google avatar

Yolanda N.

Yelp
Hubby just brought home a medium pepperoni, mushroom & pineapple pizza. Absolutely loved it! Would've loved it even more without the pineapple. I'm from the east coast and I'm not a pineapple on pizza kind of person. But this is by far the best pizza I've eaten on the westside. We will definitely be stopping in again!

Yelp
This restaurant was recommended to me by my friend Clyde a couple of months ago. I am always open to pizza nearby, and especially if it's a local small business. I was surprised to find it is a Sports Bar with a lot of TV screens everywhere you look. Not exactly my visual jam. However, the music playing was fantastic and the friendly people working there were terrific and helpful. And it is not just a pizza joint. Great menu and they serve slices... I immediately ordered a veggie with sausage slice. The crust was a little crunchy ( I asked for crispy) but toppings were fresh and cheese to sauce ratio were on point. I actually sat at the bar alone and felt perfectly comfortable. I, then ordered a veggie and cheese pie to take home to share later on with my husband... he agreed that this was a great choice. We have gotten several pies since and every one was delicious. I intend to try some entrees in the near future and highly recommend you all try this establishment! Affordable price points, lovely staff and again, great music... oh and for for Sports Fans, a definite "must go to" place to enjoy their food, beers and multi-screen sporting events!

Yelp
One of my fav pizza spots! The pizza is amazing and the rock theme is everything. Can't go wrong with rock and pizza 10/10 recommend.
google avatar

Kiona V.

Yelp
Rock'n Pies was very generous to OTM subscribers, providing a beautiful 12" Appetite for Destruction pizza loaded with pepperoni, sausages, and bacon. Normally OTM just get a slice or a small 10" pie from pizzerias, so this was a treat! The balsamic reduction sauce really brightened an otherwise one-note pie. I also liked the thin crust a lot. Baked perfectly. Very fun rock and roll deco with a drum set lamp hanging from the ceiling.

Marina F.

Yelp
An cooked toppings , and this is after I took it out of my toaster oven, can you imagine my surprise when I opened the box and saw everything was just thrown in raw , very disgusting, and I called the place to tell them what I got and the guy was pretty rude, he asked what solution I suggested instead of just saying I'm so sorry, can you bring it back and I'll replace it, or I'll do a refund, no he asked me, so so disappointed ,
google avatar

Ramona G.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I came here a few weekends ago for some pizza. It was a Friday of Lent so we couldn't have meat. We were driving around Santa Monica looking for a place that was open at night and came across Rock'n Pies on Yelp. A slice of pizza is around $5 which is not bad. I got a slice of cheese pizza and my boyfriend got the veggie one. I like how thin the pizza was and it tasted pretty good too. The place has a Rock 'N Roll vibe to it which was pretty cool. Good place to stop for some drinks and get your pizza fix!
google avatar

Jay G.

Yelp
Fun atmosphere and I like they have good specials when you don't want to drop $40 on dinner. Consistently good service and value
google avatar

Jeff K.

Yelp
Below average pizza. Unfriendly service. The woman behind the counter last night seemed to have a mood about her. 3 slices of pepperoni pizza for $15. The pepperonis are of a smaller diameter and tasted cheap. The sauce was very little and had no flavor. The crust was a decent texture. Not to fluffy not to thin. The best part of the pizza. Only upside was that this is the only pizza place around open past 11pm in this near this area of the city.

The pepperoni pizza slice and the spaghetti with meatballs were both okay. It's not amazing, just okay. I had found it through Google Maps, and I thought it was going to be just a restaurant. It kind of seems more like a sports bar that serves food. The service was great, and I wish the food was.

Yelp
The appetizers were fantastic. We had meatballs, Italian sausage and garlic knots. The BBQ chicken pizza was one of the best i've ever had. I highly recommend this place.

Yelp
Great tasting slices and beer in a terrific atmosphere with fast friendly service. Prices are very reasonable too. Will certainly be back again soon
