Where to Eat and Drink in Portland’s Montavilla Neighborhood | Eater Portland

"Rocket Empire Machine is another successful variation on the food hall brewpub. Almost due north from Mount Tabor, this food hall offers indoor and outdoor seating, with dynamic food options including a second location of the Mercado’s popular Oaxacan cart Tierra del Sol, the rare Portland combo of sushi and Burmese curries at Sea and River Sushi, and extraordinary lamb and beef stews and spongy injera of Mia’s African Kitchen, all enhanced with house-made spicy sauces. From morning until evening, the Pie Spot is open to fulfill coffee fixes and pie cravings." - Nathan Williams

What to Know About Rocket Empire Machine, The New Montavilla Food Hall | Eater Portland

"I noticed a new food hall on NE Glisan that operates like the Zipper and the Ocean: a cluster of tiny, plug-and-play mini-restaurant spaces with shared indoor and outdoor seating (though seating is currently on hold and the building is sticking to takeout). The hall serves an array of offerings — sambusas, tlayudas, mini key lime pies, bottles of beer — and houses a Gigantic Brewing taproom alongside four small restaurants. Developer Anna Mackay emphasized fighting gentrification by lowering overhead for tenants, prioritizing local Montavilla owners, and using a food-cart-pod model so businesses can 'plug their equipment in' without big renovation costs." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

New Food Hall and Brewpub Rocket Empire Machine Will Open in Montavilla | Eater Portland

"A new food-and-drink destination is coming to Montavilla in the next few months: a project from the team behind The Zipper that will house a taproom and four micro-restaurants with shared indoor and outdoor communal seating. Guerrilla Development, a Portland agency focused on non-gentrifying, community-oriented spaces, is renovating a former auto mechanic’s building and decided to revive the mechanic’s name for the new small food court. When the plan was presented to the neighborhood association, people were reportedly “super excited” about more nearby food options, and the architect Ben Carr said he expects lots of community building to happen here." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Great place for a quick bite, multiple food places on site and great beer selection from Gigantic

Google
Great taproom at Gigantic robot room, with several good food choices in the building.

This place has a few different options for dining. It's nice going with a group, with different tastes. During COVID, there's limited seating, so we usually get to-go. After we order, we usually end up posting up on the curb, or on the ramp. I would order a draft from Gigantic during this waiting period, but you need a seat at a table to be able to order. The to-go food has been awesome. I look forward to ever meal here.

The beer is excellent. We ate at two of the on-site restaurants in both were excellent. And everybody working there was very nice which can be hit-and-miss these days, right?

Love it! Gigantic brewing is one of our favorites and we had great African and Oaxaca food from 2 of the food pods located there. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Crazy name for a pretty cool food hall. Similar to the Zipper and the Ocean, Rocket Empire Machine up on NE Glisan is an eclectic restaurant hub featuring an impressive variety of food options along with covered outdoor seating. The five restaurants -- Gigantic Brewing Company, Tierra del Sol, Alleamin African Kitchen, Sea and River Sushi & Burmese Grill, and The Pie Spot -- offer sushi, sambusas, Burmese curry, tlayudas, moles, Ethiopian stews, empanadas, injera, beer, mini pies, along with other tasty treats. There's also off-street parking. This food hall warrants frequent visits.

Yelp
Delicious micro-brew selections in this adorable outdoor food court. If you love stout, be sure to ask for a sample of the chocolate hazelnut stout! Wow! I haven't been drinking much in the last few months, but it was so good thaf I had to have another small glass. Yummy! Yummy!

Yelp
Great addition to the hood. This type of concept, like a partial food hall, will always get a thumbs up from me. Especially when it's anchored around a solid beer offering like Gigantic (one of the better breweries in PDX, IMO. A little tough in the dead of winter, but otherwise I love an occasion to sit outside. The food offerings here are okay. I come for the beer and the nice patio area.

Yelp
Great beer, great food! Covered outdoor dining, i went for lunch and found plenty of seating. Lot's of Covid protocols still in place since the CDC updates. Off street parking was also a plus.

Yelp
Just want to update that this is the Rocket Empire Machine Food Hall, and it recently opened. One-stop eating and drinking, and new home to: Gigantic Brewing Robot Room, Alleamin African Kitchen, Tierra del Sol, Pie Spot, and Sea and River Sushi. https://pdx.eater.com/2020/8/14/21366691/rocket-empire-machine-opening

Yelp
I've been to REM several times since they opened and enjoyed my experience every time. The sweet pies from Pie Spot are a nice treat. They are small in size, so they are the perfect treat for one person or to share between 2 people. I love the chocolate hazelnut pie! The sushi spot is also great, and the rolls and nigiri are a good size and taste fresh. I've eaten at the Mexican spot a few times, and enjoy the blue corn tortillas. I've also ordered a chicken bowl, which was tasty. I'm looking forward to trying to African food and beer spot next!
