We had an excellent evening at Roe on Friday—my wife, two friends, and I—and from arrival to departure everything was spot on.
We were greeted warmly, with the concierge taking care of our coats and bags, and seating us promptly. Our waiter quickly checked if we’d like water while we settled in, then clearly explained the menu and the sharing concept, which we loved. He also gave some really helpful guidance on portion sizes (suggesting we order two of a couple of dishes so everyone could try them—very glad we did).
The sommelier was equally impressive: she listened to our preferences and the food we’d chosen and recommended a fantastic bottle that paired beautifully with the meal. All the service staff were friendly, professional, and genuinely knowledgeable.
Now for the food - wow. Absolutely delicious.
Standout dishes for us were:
The blooming onion – somehow turning a humble onion into something outrageously good.
Beef and oyster tartare – a really interesting and tasty take on a classic.
Stuffed chicken wings – hands down the best wings I’ve ever had. Almost boneless, incredibly juicy inside with a beautiful crisp exterior and perfectly balanced flavours.
Cuttlefish fried toast – packed with flavour and very different from what we expected, but in a genuinely “wow” way.
We ordered several other dishes too, all excellent (shout-out to the octopus skewer with its lovely char), but the above were definitely the most talked about at the table.
For dessert, we shared the caramelised banana parfait. At first glance it seemed a little understated, but the reveal and flavour were a brilliant surprise—far more than just a banana that looks like a banana.
Overall, this was one of the most polished and enjoyable dining experiences we’ve had all year, and one of the most memorable dinners we’ve had in several years. It’s clear the team at Roe really know what they’re doing, both front of house and in the kitchen. We’ll absolutely be back.
