ROLL UP JAPANESE HAND ROLLS

First time dining here and I was very pleased. Food is exceptionally tasty; the crispy rice may have been one of the best I’ve ever had, and I’ve eaten at an array of sushi spots. Ambiance is cozy and chic. Only reason I dropped a star is the price to serving size ratio is a little off. Portion sizes are on the smaller end and I was still very hungry after finishing dinner here. Otherwise great neighborhood spot.

We were visiting Chicago a few weeks back and Roll Up was on our list of new places to try, and it just happened to be a few blocks from our hotel! Everyone there was so friendly and genuine (especially our server Papitchaya), and the food and atmosphere were equally wonderful! The furikake fries were perfectly cooked and beautifully seasoned; the rolls were perfection; and we couldn't resist trying the lychee ice cream, even though we usually don't order dessert with lunch. The kicker, though? That fresh wasabi! it's tart and spicy and tangy, and has an amazing texture, almost like a chutney. It's hard to describe, but I'll never be happy with wasabi paste again. This restaurant is a wonderful gem -we can't wait to return the next time we're in town!

This new spot has so many things going for it. Since it’s a 16-seat countertop, it feels more of an intimate experience, and you can watch the person make the hand rolls in front of you! Our favs included the unagi hand rolls, scallop hand roll, cucumber salad, furikake fries and the blue tea. The fish was so fresh, and it melts in your mouth! The blue tea is unlike a tea I’ve encountered before—it tastes like sweet and creamy, but it doesn’t have any milk it. Coming back to try the toro and wagyu hand roll next time!

Great food and service! Tried a bit of a few things and enjoyed all of it. The fries were great! The rolls tasted fresh and were made to order in front of us. Even the wasabi was amazing! Great spot for snacks or a light meal. The spot is tucked away a bit so it’s easy to miss.

I reached out to her a couple of weeks in advance, and she worked with us to hammer out logistics with the birthday decorations and cake prep. She also helped us order some off-menu items we wanted for the party. During the party, we also ordered items from their menu. We were not only impressed with the overall fish quality, but also the small details they put into things. They provide real wasabi, and serve really aromatic tea from Paris that I've not seen at other restaurants. The 9 of us really enjoyed the experience - we've been to omakases in LA, NYC, and Japan, and their uni and otoro is up there with the greats. It's so refreshing to find a non-omakase restaurant that puts a high focus on the quality of their ingredients without breaking the bank for us customers. It's also very cool that they do private events! My friends and I had a great time celebrating my birthday, and we will definitely be back!

Roll Up is AWESOME. The hand rolls were very flavorful and super fresh. Chef Cesar helped us figure out what we want and made amazing handroll — every roll was better than the first Also the bartender Summer made great drinks and helped us select the right Sake based on our preferences. She was super friendly! If you want tasty sushi rolls, good vibes, and cool people, go to Roll Up. I’m definitely coming back!

Absolutely loved Roll Up by Oui. The food was super fresh and flavorful, the hand rolls were made perfectly, and the quality really stands out. Service was friendly and attentive without being over the top. The atmosphere is chill and relaxed — a great spot to hang out and enjoy good food. Definitely coming back.

Wow the quality of food here is top notch! From the fresh real wasabi (not the bright green fake wasabi from a tube) to the taste and presentation of their crispy rice tartar and matcha tiramasu, you can tell the owner put lots of effort on making sure all the ingredients are fresh and good quality. The service was also great! We had too many glasses of the pineapple express (refillable!). We will definitely come back again.

Don't let the street view of the old Johnson publishing building sway you; get yourself into Rollup order the five set (split in half if there are two) so you'll get a crispy seaweed bite every time.. Finish with a premium roll and drink it down with a crisp bottle of French wine or cocktail. Oooh la la! Since you're not in Paris, you deserve this.

Went here for lunch to celebrate my daughter's birthday, who is four. We were all treated so well, and the staff was so friendly. My daughter loved the salmon hand roll, the miso soup, and lychee ice cream, as well as the pineapple oolong mocktail (not overly sweet at all!) I've had a lot of miso soups, and this was one of the best I've ever had! And the lychee ice cream had real pieces of lychee in it, I'd go back for this alone. Some of the other favorites for our crew included the bluefin hand roll, the yellowtail crudo, and the crispy rice fish tartar. The flavors were fresh, elegantly crafted, and exploded in my tongue. The fresh wasabi (NOT HORSERADISH!) made this place a must repeat experience for us. The restaurant just got their liquor license this past week, and the cocktail menu was seriously impressive. I had a cocktail with Matcha and Yuzu, and it was perfectly balanced, not too sweet, with a great mouth feel. A wonderful cocktail that I'll come back for 100%. Hope you enjoy this tucked away gem!

Came here on a weekday and was able to walk in easily. The interior is pretty nice and the sushi bar seating is comfortable and swanky looking. They have a set menu for their 'hand rolls' which I think they describe as equivalent to a maki roll so they're supposed to on the larger side. You can make some minor substitutions like a double of something in the set but can't bring in other varieties outside of the set. We got the 4 set and opted to swap the California with another Scallop. The price at $36.95 feels a bit high though for the variety. I thought the fish and how it was prepared was overall pretty good. My favorite being the spicy tuna and how it was prepared with crispy onions. The scallop are the baby bay scallops which was just Ok along with the salmon. I wish I swapped for 2 of the spicy tunas instead! I like the wasabi they use too - doesn't have that huge punch like the paste but it tastes better to me. We were still a little hungry after the meal so I would say overall the meal was OK to try.

The food and service were excellent. The only challenge was the cost. Prices were high and we won't be able to frequent this place even though it's in the neighborhood. Wising them much success with those that can afford it.

I didn't get to take a picture of my food since my kid scarfed it down as soon as we got home. The place is pretty new and would like to go back and actually sit down. We got 3 hand rolls (salmon,California and avocado) it's pretty basic but it's filling and was pretty good. It's good for takeout if you're planning a park day at grant park or beach day. I will come back and looking forward to the wagyu roll.

Pretty decent stuff. Fries are season well. Avocado roll was decent. Far from the worst & best I've had. Decent option if the area while taking in the sites in the park

I visited here three different times during my recent visit to Chicago for a conference. Every feature of the restaurant made me feel like I was in similar places in New York or Tokyo, where the line would be out the door to sit at the counter. Best hand rolls ever. The thin french fries with aioli and cucumber salad were also amazing. I could see the restaurant getting even better over time with more experience.

Great ambiance, opened up in the neighborhood! The service is quick and staff is friendly.

The hand rolls were extremely fresh and delicious. And homemade desserts were phenomenal! The service was very welcoming and prompt. Would highly recommend!

Super amazing experience! Such a nice place! Some much fresh fish in each roll! Recommed: Uni roll, Bluefine Toro, shrimp tempura! Crispy tartare rice is a must try. Definitely will come back

Delicious fresh fish, lovely decor, fantastic service, nice presentation, and fair prices. Definitely worth the splurge for the Toro tuna and California. The fries were great and the matcha tiramisu was house made and not too sweet, really nice.

Spontaneously decided to stop here with a friend before a concert. They opened recently. The restaurant has bar style seating. The owner recommended the shrimp tempura roll and spicy tuna roll, which were very yummy. He also let us know we got free fries when we purchase a hand roll, which was greatly appreciated. The fries and spicy mayo were really good, but I wouldn't buy them myself at menu price.

My favorite sushi place in Chicago!! I come here all the time and it never disappoints. The waygu & salmon hand roll is my favorite and they also have a matcha tiramisu that is to die for! 10000/10 recommend

The food and service was outstanding. I wish we had a restaurant like this back in PA. The rolls are super fresh and the tea was delicious. I will definitely be back.

Must get items: negitoro handroll, unagi handroll, furikake fries, crispy rice, blue lait tea. Friend had a birthday party here, we ordered some of everything on the menu and they were really nice and let us do a custom menu for the party. The negitoro is maybe the best quality toro I've had in a handroll place. Tasted like they used otoro versus chutoro or a cheaper type of tuna. Also loved the wasabi (there were pieces of fermented? pickled? wasabi stem pieces that were crunchy and sooooo good). Off menu, we ordered kinmedai, nodoguro, amaebi, shima aji, otoro in advance just for the party and the chef was super nice and made everyone sushi/sashimi/handrolls based versions of whatever we wanted during the party.

It was our last day in Chicago for a birthday weekend, we stumbled on Rollup on Resy and boy did we hit gold. The handrolls were amazing especially the Bluefin! Since it was a birthday they also gave us some Matcha tiramisu, which was great as well, light on the sweetness which we love. Would definitely come back again!

Happened to walk past yesterday with my baby for their grand opening and tried their cucumber roll (seasoned so well!), spicy salmon (10/10!), salmon roll (can't really taste the salmon much 6/10) and my daughter loved the furikake fries (light, crispy on the outside and right amount of fluff inside and not oily at all). Will def come back again to try their sets! This was just a snack :)

Eating at Roll Up By Oui was such an intimate experience! It was our first time trying a hand roll restaurant and this set the bar HIGH! The service was quick and friendly. The sushi was grand! Definitely recommend trying this restaurant out with friends or a nice date!

Got welcomed by the warm smile of server Bruce, who was handing out French-inspired ice tea outside of their door. Menu was easy to choose from since they made set menus for those wanting to make a full meal. Each one is amazing and exceeded expectations! Had to order a second set to split. Lovely neighborhood Jap-fusion spot! Matcha tiramisu for the win!

The bluefin tuna divine. Buttery, fresh, and perfectly paired with crisp nori and just-warm rice. Every bite melts in your mouth without feeling heavy. Service is friendly and fast, and you can watch the chefs craft each roll right in front of you. If you love sushi, especially bluefin, this place is a must.

This place is so so good! The Pineapple Express is super fresh, the chef makes everything in front of you and the match tiramisu is to die for. Service was fast and the place is really cozy!

The furikake fries were an absolute 10/10. My favorite item that I tried on the menu. I also had the shisito peppers which were extremely good and perfectly grilled. I came into this experience never having had a hand roll before and I really enjoyed it! A bit more messy than when they are cut but it was a fun experience and they make the hand rolls right in front of you! I asked if they had jalapeño to add on to rolls (one of my random favorites to add to sushi) and they didn't have it but the manager walked to go grocer to buy me one which was the absolute nicest thing ever! So so sweet!

Such a cool atmosphere! Cozy lighting, you can watch the sushi being made right in front of you. Can't wait to go back. You can bring friends its the perfect date night spot. Really cool sushi options too. Service was great, super friendly.

We stumbled in after seeing their posted deal of a free order of fries and miso soup with the purchase of a hand roll. The service was incredible, as was the food. With or without the deal, it was absolutely worth it! 10/10

Such a great new addition to the south loop neighborhood! We had the miso soup, shishito peppers, furikake fries, and several hand rolls (spicy tuna, shrimp tempura, California, avocado), and everything was great! Already excited to come back!
