The 17 Best Caribbean Restaurants In Philly

"Ron’s Caribbean has two locations (North Philly and the Northeast) where they serve classic Jamaican dishes like curry goat, jerk chicken, and patties. All of their platters are generously filled and come with sides like peas and rice, stewed cabbage, and sauteed okra with a little spice. And they’ll all come in handy when student loans rob your paycheck of a digit or two. The $13 brown stewed chicken platter, with stewed meat, is the best thing to get here. The sauce they drench it in is like a thick, chicken gravy with a smokiness so delicious we scrape the carton just to get the last drop. " - candis mclean

Google
I say this is one of the best restaurants in Philly. Their service is great, it was first time for me to try Caribbean food but they kindly answered all of my questions and helped me choose what to get. I love their Curry Goat with okra and plantain! And please try jerk chicken. Definitely the gem of Caribbean cuisine it is.

Google
Lonstanding Philly establishment but service is always slow. Every single time. Regardless of whether you order in person or online. They said it would take 10- 15 for my platters. It took 40 mins and the mgr/owner to ring me up. With 8 people working behind the counter, they were slow, ignored my concern after a 20 min wait, told me my food was coming, waited another 10 minutes for the woman to place my order on the counter and never ring me up. The mgr/owner rings me up, doesnt offer apologies & I left. Never let me check my food like others and ended up with 4 small basa nuggets. Never again. (6/2025)

Google
My favorite spot to stop & grab a platter full to the top after church. Definitely SUNDAY'S BEST PLACE TOO EAT!! Oxtails, okra, rice & peas with gravy and baked mac & cheese. Side dish was plantains yummy 😋

Marissa Lawrence-King

Google
Food was amazing! Felt so good to get a Caribbean taste. The front counter ladies were so nice. You order at the front, wait a little for the chefs to cook, and then the person you ordered with shows you your food and then bags it up for you. The menu is pretty vast so I look forward to coming back and trying more things! The goat curry and chicken stew did not disappoint! Also had the Mac n cheese, sweet potato’s, rice and beans, cabbage, kale, plus a side of corn bread! I had some left overs for a few days.

Google
I got the brown stewed chicken and it was not brown stewed chicken. It had no sauce, must have been their version of it. I’ve had brown stewed chicken many times from different places and homemade and this was not it, I was disappointed.

Google
Ron’s Caribbean cuisine the food is flavorful to every bite the service is always on point thank you for giving me a place I can eat everything 100 times over and have quality freshness and goodness above all other places thank you to this place and to the respectful hard working people who serve cook and give service there

Google
I was recommended to try this place and it’s just flat out terrible if you want day old overcooked chicken this is your spot. First and last time ordering

Danielle Medford

Google
Ok so this was the 3rd time that I have them a try. I think because they are so nice I keep giving them a play. Their food “looks” good presentation was on a 10, but I’ll have to give the food itself a 3. The rice and beans were very dry, cabbage was bland and the grilled salmon was bland and too pink. But their customer service is 100 and that goes along way!!!

Yelp
One the best places to go and get American Jamaican food service is good depending on time on day sometimes there's a wait just it's worth the wait the fish the jerk chicken can't go wrong
google avatar

Renee D.

Yelp
I like Ron's food a lot but I frequent the newer location on Rising Sun. Well, I messed up and placed a Grub Hub order and selected this location by mistake and was unable to cancel it. Well, I have heard this Ron's gets crowded but that's an understatement. The line was out the door and it's one of those lines where you snake through those posts like waiting to get on a ride. I'm telling you I am so glad I ordered on line. There is still a bit of a wait for that but no comparison. I was in and out in about 15. Good was consistent with Rising Sun. I requested extra gravy on my oxtails and they delivered! Absolutely smothered. My only complaint was on the flip side no peppers and onions on my bassa. Boo!
google avatar

Yelp
Ordered $50 worth of food for my family only to get home and missing a whole platter. When I called, Anthony nor Adrienne were sympathetic... their response was for me to drive back (30 min drive) to get a refund. It was a Take out nightmare... food Ok but not worth the bad service or them not accommodating their own mistake
google avatar

Yelp
I've ordered 3 times from here within the past week, and they are all yummy. I had the jerk chicken with rice and peas and cabbage... well-seasoned chicken and grilled. The sauce was different but I loved it. I then had the curry goad and that was perfect. And today, I ordered the curry chicken. The portions are small for what I expect to be a large size. Their customer service skills are too notch. I ordered via Ubereats with one of my orders and the lady called me to confirm what I ordered and was very polite over the phone. The jerk chicken patty was one the best I've had.
google avatar

Stephanie M.

Yelp
Ron's is my go to for a Jamaican platter. Their size large is smaller with the sides compared to other spots but the jerk chicken is unmatched. They cut it right so there's little to no grizzle. The chicken is tenderoni and sauced up and their candied yams are actually candied. They forgot one of my extra sides the one time and I waited too long to go back for it or for a refund. So just always check your bags!
google avatar

Audrey L.

Yelp
Ordered fried dumplings and received boiled, assumed they ran out. Oxtails were good but missing something and I couldn't place my finger on it. But they were tender and meaty.

Wil T.

Yelp
Rons has definitely fallen off. Walked in around 1:00 pm . Asked for jerk chicken with Xtra jerk sauce. Was told the jerk sauce was not ready. It's 1:00 in the afternoon how can it not b e ready ....Ordered the curry chicken. IT looked like it needed curry pale an tasteless.
google avatar

Shaquille J.

Yelp
For Philly? This place busts! Lol you can't beat the bang for your buck this place offers. I ordered a small one, and I felt like it was really a medium. Me and my lady each had a small platter and it only came out to $21! We ordered to go and we got our food within 10 minutes. The only thing I didn't like about this place was the area it's located in. The surrounding area is pretty sketch, so get your food during the daylight hours lol. Also, the okra could've been more seasoned but for the price you pay the food is pretty good.
google avatar

Tammy C.

Yelp
I think this place hits the mark on taste and quantity and price!! If you are in the mood for a big plate of Caribbean or Jamaican food, look no further. They have a bunch of options in terms of rice platters and different meat options. The platters come with a rice, meat, and a side (usually a vegetable of your choice). The prices are really great too for the amount of food. $10 for a plate is a steal! There is a limited amount of seating inside and when I went around the evening, there was a line so I had a wait a little bit maybe around 5 minutes. Service is standard and nothing fancy over the top. But I'm not complaining! I'm glad I found this place.
google avatar

Barry S.

Yelp
The oxtails were great! My intentions were to tweet it in the car however I couldn't stop eating and I ended up devouring the plate. I ordered the small and it was still a hefty portion. Very good. I will say the rice was a little undercooked but the flavor from the oxtails made up for it
google avatar

Arielle B.

Yelp
This place never disappoints. I recommend calling the food in just to minimize the weight because they get busy! But they definitely move quickly! The food is amazing. From the fried fish to the jerk chicken and oxtails, the beef patties to the rice and peas and everything in between...nothing has been bad. It's not a big place so I recommend getting your food to go. The portions are a decent size too and prices are fair. This is definitely my go to spot for Jamaican food!
google avatar

Aisha F.

Yelp
Sooooo, every business has their off day. Burnt patty--sigh-- and the oxtail was a solid 4/10. But you know what, I refuse to write Ron's off completely. Their ackee and saltfish and red pea soup were DELICIOUS. (So good, I never got pics that day!) From now on, that's all I'll be getting.
google avatar

Michael M.

Yelp
So I ain't tryin to be no oxtail authority, but if you check my reviews you can tell I'm eating it a lot. I got the recommendation for Ron's from a dude working at another Jamaican spot just talking to him about food, so I tried it and it was really good. While it wasn't the MOST tender oxtails I've had the portion was big and the flavor was good. I felt like it leaned a little more toward spicy than sweet. I ordered oxtails, rice and peas.. that came with carrots and parsnips, cabbage and a side of Mac and cheese. I took a nap after this meal. Unless you want a predominantly sweet gravy I think Ron's will hit the spot. -one thing about oxtails is that unlike some other food... it travels and arrives good when getting delivery. 10/10 I'll be getting Ron's again. 4/22/24 ... Hit up Ron's again since my first review and it was even better. The oxtails were meaty and as tender as you could expect. Ron's might be my favorite spot right now. My girl had the grilled salmon with mixed vegetables and it was really good too. Give it a try.
google avatar

Nina R.

Yelp
I would have given this place 4 stars, however it's carry-out only and there isn't a place to sit and dine-in, nor a place to sit and wait. You just have to stand in line. After waiting in line for a while, the lady that wrapped my food up was very attentive and patient. She answered my questions and showed me everything to make sure it was to my liking.. I ordered a small side of cabbage, 6 wings, and a few pieces of the fried king fish. I thought the cabbage was sort of bland and needed seasonings. The jersey chicken wings were delish. They had a nice smoky flavor and not overly spicy. The fried king fish was breaded nicely and seasoned well, however a pinch too salty. If I am ever in Philly again, I would consider coming back. Prices are reasonable. Bring your appetite because the servings will fill your belly well!

Jazzy J.

Yelp
I am well in tune with the service and culture of Caribbean restaurants. Where I'm from, the worst the attitude the better the food. Well this location has the most employees Ive ever seen in one area. Ordering pick up ahead of time is pointless. They all stand in the middle of the floor staring at the cook behind the window. They will not stop to help you and when you try to get their attention they just point at a sign. I think it's pretty comical because the food is not even that good to give the type of service they give lol. Someone bought me the curry chicken once and it was kind of sweet. Recently I had the Mac n cheese with the red snapper. Mac taste like Kraft noodles and was very chewy. Fish was cold because I had to wait ten minutes to get it after it was already done. Cabbage was ok but was missing something. It's a no for me but yal go ahead and enjoy.

Eastwood King M.

Yelp
It clearly states on the receipt - Customer Note: Please put jerk gravy on the rice. Other than the dry rice and beans it's was good.
google avatar

Le N.

Yelp
I love their platters. The goat curry is really good. I love that they drench everything in their platters. Sometimes I have to ask other establishments for extra sauce but this place is golden. I love the chicken patties and the jerk chicken. It's a staple when you are in North Philadelphia. Get the cabbage or the mac and cheese. I love their rice and peas.

Yolonda B.

Yelp
The worst food ever first time trying it. I wouldn't feed it to a dog. Everything salty and didnt look appetizing.
google avatar

Sharone R.

Yelp
I am writing a Great view for the restaurant on Rising Sun.. the shop is so clean and beautiful atmosphere the ppl are so sweet and give you a big sample to taste if you're not sure about purchase I will keep coming back and I recommend the fish fantastic..,

Chae S.

Yelp
this spot was good. maybe my second best caribb food in the city. the atmosphere is awesome

Mel M.

Yelp
I use to like the brown stew chicken but this last platter wasn't good. The rice didn't taste fresh and the chicken was salty and dry even with gravy. The Basa fish is too greasy. I hope they improve because at one time all their food was good.

Veronica H.

Yelp
We've been faithful Ron's customers for more than six years. Unfortunately, the taste of their food has declined. The food isn't as seasoned as it used to be. We recently ordered curry chicken and fried fish platters. The curry was the blandest I've ever had from Ron's; the cabbage was sweet and otherwise bland. The chicken patties and plantain - 5 stars! I used to get the ox tails and snapper...but the oxtails portions are ridiculously small now. The snapper has been okay. C'mon Ron's get it together. We will take time away from Ron's to explore other Caribbean options.

Y N.

Yelp
I placed my order online. While I was waiting for my change I looked at the fish. The fish was burnt and dry looking. I asked the lady if she could give me some different pieces and she said because I opened the container she could not. I said to her I'm did not touch the fish. I asked for my money back. She threw the fish away and gave my me money back. They would rather throw the fish in the trash instead of having a satisfied customer. Please check your orders before you leave. My bag was stapled and everything That is bad business

Shee G.

Yelp
EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED. A SATURDAY EARLY EVENING. ALL LINES IN THE STORE ARE LONG, with one of them almost out of the door. Why did they let two police officers, walk in and go ahead of about 20 people to order their food and walk right out in about 5 minutes. meanwhile some of us had been in line 15 mins/20 mins. And to make matters worse, you would think the officers would say no thats ok we'll wait like everyone else. NOPE. Wont be back.
google avatar

Delvia W.

Yelp
No other Caribbean place has my heart like Ron's. All though the line is usually out the door' it's worth the wait. Parking: Street parking. Meter. Service: the Servers are very tentative and accommodating. They make sure your special request are met: extra this or don't let this touch...... Atmosphere: Ron's expanded the sitting area and added air conditioning. Glad to see the expansion. There are about 4 to 5 servers, so although the line is long, it goes pretty fast. There are many things to order from from Chicken to beef to seafood. I've never ordered anything from Ron's that I didn't like. I ordered for the first time the fried fish and omg!! Crispy and delicious!!! Fresh! I also ordered the green beans which were cooked just right! The mac & cheese was amazing. I ordered the plantains as a side and they were nice and sweet. Ackee is salt fish is good but the amount for $13 is small. Overall it's tasty Mon!! Enjoy!

Analisa D.

Yelp
Ordered food with gravy. Asked to make sure there was gravy before paying for the food, only to get home and everything is DRY!!!!! Who eats food that's dry

Erika C.

Yelp
The service was good. The curry chicken was okay. The cabbage was good. The rice and peas were good. The yams were good. The bbq chicken was ok. The Mac and cheese was bad, really bad.
google avatar

Marcia M.

Yelp
Ok so here it goes... ordered a large oxtail platter and received a platter of rice and peas in the entree part, cabbage in the first side part and the "large oxtails" in the other side part. NO GOOD FOLKS!!!! how do you charge $24 for a side of oxtails????? They were grisly and tasted like beef short ribs - NOT oxtails. I drove 35 minutes on a recommendation that swore to the plenty of the large oxtails platter. Y'all dropped the ball BIG TIME. Also, dude was too busy flirting with the other worker to hand me my change. I just walked to my table and sat down in disgust while I ate my side portion oxtails and people watched, I don't understand the hype. I brought it to his attention about the mismatched portions and he shrugged it off as oh well. . Due to the popularity of this place by people who probably have no comparison since it's convenient to them, nothing will probably change. I won't be back and I wish I could get my burned gas back.

Nadirah A.

Yelp
food and service. womens that service people attitudes are nasty. amount of food on platter decreased and prices increase.

Jamie B.

Yelp
Their curry goat, jerk chicken and brown stew chicken is delicious only thing I didn't care for was the corn oh and the fish soup
google avatar

Kameelah T.

Yelp
Very good food as always. Been coming here for over a decade. No disappointments about the food. The disposition of the staff can vary but to be expected with Caribbean food. Its a stereo type for a reason smh
google avatar

Linda B.

Yelp
Food is always good especially the Basa fish !!! Lines get a little long but well worth the wait , good service friendly staff .

Ada R.

Yelp
Ron, Ron , Ron, I am so disappointed after being a customer since 2005. Your food was the best and closest I could find from New York. Everybody can Not do spicy foods. I even thought maybe the peppercorns was left in too long and then I find out you've decided to spice up the curry goat, curry chicken and oxtails had a little kick which is fine. The curry goat is now over heated! I come and buy anywher from 2-3 platters just for me. Do I have to find another restaurant. Also know everyone is not going to tell what is wrong, thier just not going to return. I couldn't return food twice and had to throw it away, can't spend that type of money only to be disappointed! Not from CA I'm from here in Philly!
google avatar

Alexis C.

Yelp
I mean let's be honest if the staff isn't rude to you then you know the food isn't bussin'. They have a regimented system to get you in and out and I appreciate that. Call ahead and pickup! Don't deliver!! The food is top tier. The best Caribbean food I've had in the city other than Parada Maimon (Dominican food). Their fried fish is crisp, while the fish inside soft and tender. Their rice and peas are ::chef's kiss:This was all I wanted when I was pregnant and we take our daughter here still to this day. You are able to dine in these days which is a great addition when we're up that way.
google avatar

Lori B.

Yelp
Honestly thee worst experience I've ever had here. We threw every thing in the trash. The cook should be ashamed.

David T.

Yelp
Absolutely great tasting Curry goat platter meat was so tender and tasty you only needed gums to chew it. Great tasting fish also and the chocolate cake was out of this world.
google avatar

Ken L.

Yelp
Very satisfying! The rice&peas are some of the best I've had. I think the sides could be a bit better (I wasn't a huge fan of the yams or cabbage). Overall this place isn't bad, but there are a few Jamaican restaurants in the area that I'd suggest over this place.
google avatar

Symone W.

Yelp
Ron's is soo good. Such reasonable prices for their options. This past trip I got the fish platter that came with two sides the cabbage and rice and beans. The fish is the best thing they sell is it perfectly seasoned and fried to perfection. They sell it individually or in a platter. I also got the BBQ wings, I do with they were cooked a little harder, but that's a personal preference so I wont complain much about that. The sauce was really good and the wings were covered in sauce which was nice since some places are extremely skimpy on the sauce. It is in a super busy area with businesses up and down the street and parking is pretty bad so be prepared to park on a side street or circle the block a few time or if you want to test your chances with PPA you can illegally park. During COVID they do have signs that promote social distancing but most people in line don't really adhere to it. I would just suggest they have someone out there directing patrons on where to stand and the line is always long. You do have to call ahead right now to get your food and you cannot order at the window. This process was very easy and I had no difficulties. They even asked how far away I was when I ordered so that my food would be freshly prepared and packaged and not sitting there which I appreciated. Overall I think everyone should try this place and give the fish a try.

Tracey A.

Yelp
Ron's Caribbean Cuisine never disappoints. Their grilled salmon and pepper steak is exceptional. Portions are perfect. Hot home cooked meal vibes without being overpriced. Customer service is amazing too
google avatar

Troy M.

Yelp
Tried this place for first tine. Nasty ust nasty. Mac and cheese was old. I can tell. Curry chicken was awful. Fish was greasy and nasty. Lil delicious Woodland Ave is way better. Will not be back. Cooks can't cook. Rice was awful. Candy yams were horrible.
google avatar

Josh R.

Yelp
We checked this place out thanks to its recent top-50 ranking in Philly magazine. Perhaps the best jerk chicken I've ever had. It has a complex, smoky flavor and a tenderness that shows it was made with lots of pride. The brown stewed snapper was also wonderful, as was the curry patty. And the value for the money is unmatched as the prices are reasonable to begin with and the portions were double what they might have been elsewhere.
google avatar

Shawnte W.

Yelp
If you live in Philly and love Caribbean cuisine, go to Ron's. Period. My friend who's lived in the area highly recommends this place and it didn't take any convincing for her to take me there when were in town. Caribbean spots can be hit or miss regardless of the city but I had high hopes since my friend raved about this place so much. She was not wrong whatsoever. Parking is tight where the restaurant is located but they do offer pickup just in case you need to double park and run in lol. There was a small line when we stopped by but the wait was not long. I went with a small order of chicken curry with cabbage and white rice. Portion size was definitely on point considering the price and the aroma was amazing. I also got a beef patty as well which was hot and delicious. The curry met my expectations and I was able to break that bad boy down into 3 separate meals lol. I will definitely be back to visit next time I'm in the city!
google avatar

Fawn M.

Yelp
I have heard about Ron's for years so decided to go today for lunch since I was in the area. I got there around 1:30, I was shocked to see a line. After about 15 minutes it was my turn to be waited on. The young ladt was very courteous. I ordered oxtails with rice and cabbage, DELICIOUS!!!. The portions were huge and the prices are great. I saw all the various platters being made, yummy and big. I can't wait to try there fish. Worth the wait!
google avatar

Araba N.

Yelp
The food here is so good. I get the oxtail everytime. It's reasonably priced and has a favorable ratio of oxtail to bone. The portions are generous and the food is consistently good. The service is pretty typical for a Caribbean restaurant. Not very warm and friendly but they got the job done. Only big complaint is the long wait. You literally have to wait in line for 30 minutes to get your food. You can't order delivery or takeout so there's no way to get around this. No clue why it takes so long given that most people are probably getting oxtail or jerk chicken with rice and peas and cabbage. You'd think they would just cook more at a time to accommodate the long lines but no. Also, the area where this restaurant is located isn't the nicest. Good food, though, so definitely worth it!
google avatar

Tisha D.

Yelp
Always good food! Never disappointed! My favorite Jamaican restaurant!! Great service and great people!
google avatar

Shardai G.

Yelp
I had not been to this place in years. The food was not good, but the attitude of the worker was worse and should have told me to say no in the first place. The fish was greasy and tasted very much frozen and packaged in styrofoam containers, burning the bottom. The jerk chicken was too spicy for my liking and it overwhelmed the taste of the food! Ron's is overrated and lacks understanding in being service-oriented!
google avatar

Nikki C.

Yelp
Ron's been a Philly staple for a while. Probably been coming here for over 10 years off and on. I was in the area so decided to get in on a piece of Jamaican nostalgia. I ordered the basa fish platter, really good price, love how quick and non-attitudey everyone is. BUT I received the smallest, itty, bitty pieces of fish for my platter. It probably seemed even smaller because I had like 50 scoops of rice and about 60 scoops of canned string beans on my platter. Don't over compensate my platter with an insane amount of sides. Either way, the fish was okay...they don't have collard greens so don't even ask. Just an all around disappointing meal. I probably won't be back.

Shawn B.

Yelp
Went there yesterday for lunch I ordered fish soup & jerk chicken for later. I ask the lady serving me can she wash her hands before fixing my food. she rolled her eyes HARD mumbled behind her mask then replied if she don't wash her hands what am I going do about it. I said nothing! but somebody else can make my food If your not. As I'm standing there i can see her telling everybody what just happened because one by one they all started looking at me. Smh I ask to speak to the manager just to find out then manger was one of the ones she was telling her story to as I if their friends. I complained to the manager anyway although I predict nothing will happen. I was a regular weekly/biweekly customer until yesterday. I'll never patronize them again. beware If your anything like me and want the person preparing your food to have clean hands. you just might get called out. smh
google avatar

Patricia K.

Yelp
I ordered a small pan of fish which is 20 pieces and and a small pan of macaroni and cheese. They were just finishing up my order so it was nice and hot. The prices are very reasonable. The fish was seasoned well, very tasty. The Mac and cheese was good also. I would definitely order again. Everyone enjoyed it.
