Rosalind Bakery - Review - Embarcadero - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"This Pacifica-born bakery opened its first SF location in the Embarcadero Center thanks to the Vacant to Vibrant program. The tiny takeout shop makes a junior one-bedroom look like a mansion, which means there are fewer options available than other bakeries around the city (and also unfortunately none of their beloved pizza). But the focus on pastries and breads pays off. The soft-baked chocolate chip cookie should take top billing in your order—it’s barely sweet and so moist we’re not even sure it saw the inside of an oven. Second up: the blue corn cookie that’s clearly been CRISPRed with cornbread. And if you have any entertaining to do, pick up a cherry walnut or olive loaf, available in half or full sizes. photo credit: Patrick Wong" - Patrick Wong

Adorable little bakery tucked inside the Embarcadero Plaza featuring outstanding bread, lovely treats, and tasty coffee. I dropped by for a quick breakfast before work, and I was super impressed. I would probably budget a bit more time to find this space — they do a perfect good job labeling their store, but I’m just quite directionally challenged and spent way too long wandering the Plaza — but it is otherwise the perfect spot for a mid-day pick-me-up. I got their seed loaf, which was, true to its name, absolutely loaded with seeds. It had flax, pumpkin, poppy, sunflower, and I’m sure several other seeds, which made the little slice super hearty and filling. I paired this with an americano, which was lovely — the coffee wasn’t overly bright (which is my preference), although it did feel a little bit too watery / wasn’t all that fragrant. They also had a bunch of other goodies that I didn’t get a chance to try, like various danishes and croissants. I think I’ve had their baked goods at other cafes before, though — I’d recognize their almond croissant or millet muffin anywhere — and they’ve been delicious. They’re most famous for their bread, so I’ll have to come back and give it a try. There isn’t a ton of seating inside — just three small tables for 1-2 people along the front windows — but there are a few communal picnic tables right outside in the plaza if you need a place to hang out for a while.

I've stopped here before and felt like their pastries were alright. Recently I picked up the almond croissant and it was *very* sour, much more than the past few times I've had their pastries, and more sour than any sourdough I've had in SF (having being born and raised here). They do not disclose on any of their signage that their pastries are made with sourdough. I returned to the bakery to flag it to them and asked if I could exchange it, but they insisted that they didn't change the recipe. They pushed back hard and claimed that I wouldn't like any of their other pastries, even though I've had them before. I've gotten pastries from here for my family members before and they never mentioned how sour it was, so I guess it must have been off-day? It was overall a strange and pretty uncomfortable experience. I didn't enjoy interacting with their staff, who are normally standoff-ish anyway. As another reviewer mentioned, I've also experienced long wait times here too as they sometimes only have one person on staff. I'd go to this spot every time I'm back in SF, but I won't be back.

This bakery was severely understaffed for a Sunday morning. They had one person manning the register and making all the drinks. I’m part of the Breakfast Club on Blackbird, so I get free drinks before 11AM, and despite checking in around 10:45 the employee did not let me get my free drink since she only got to my order after 11. If you’re going to have partnerships with other companies, you need to have a better internal service policy in place. I'd only come here if you're ok with mediocre overpriced pastries, grainy matcha, or chai that comes from a pre-made bottle.

Rosalind Bakery's SF location at 4 Embarcadero is an excellent place to stop in for a tasty Croissant and Latte. Easy access and quality products. Served up by friendly staff.

Delicious pastries in this hidden bakery. I've tried the cinnamon bun and the seasonal Danish, both with incredible laminated dough. Will be back again.

This was my first visit. It was on a Saturday afternoon. I was happy there was a vegan option available. The customer service was good. I am looking forward to my next visit.

Yelp
I stopped by Rosalind Bakery on a Saturday morning for coffee and ended up grabbing an ice americano along with a blue corn cookie and seasonal danish (mixed berry with vanilla) and to snack on while spending the morning journaling. Loved the blue corn cookie which reminded me of a sweet corn bread with a great texture from the corn. I love cookies that are chewy and not too sweet and this was just perfect. The danish was great as well with a fresh berry jam with whole pieces of blueberries and I loved the flaky layers in the pastry as well. Such a cute bakery with some counter seats inside and long tables outside. The natural light coming through the windows is beautiful and it was super cute that while I was there, a lot regulars came in grabbing their usual Saturday morning pastry. I can see why this is a neighborhood staple and will definitely be back! Pro tip: I've also seen Rosalind Bakery pastries at Paper Son on Mondays and Tuesdays so it's great that they're expanding their reach!

Yelp
Excellent experience! The Rosalind Bakery croissant is well made. Their cappuccino was good. Marie's counter service is friendly and represents the business well. Barstools and window counter are clean. Atrium light coming through the window is pleasant. Prices for this quality of food are fair and a great value. I will be back yet again for another perfect experience. Thanks Rosalind Bakery!

Yelp
Wow!! I tried this bakery on a whim while on my walk and it was an excellent experience! Their brown sugar millet muffin must be one of the best muffins I've ever had. The little crunchies give a great texture to the moist muffin. The almond croissant had a slight tang from I believe the sourdough. Perfectly flaky, super tasty and soft. I will most definitely be coming back!!

Yelp
Best croissant I have ever had!!! Great coffee too, very good prices for the area, about to become a regular.

Yelp
We stumbled upon this coffee shop when we were walking around. The barista was so kind and actually seemed like she cared. My coffee was delicious with a house made cinnamon syrup. Super cute and small shop.. not too much space to sit but it was very welcoming

Yelp
tried the millet muffin and it was extremely satiating--loads you up with fibre because of the whole wheat and provides great textural contrast bc of the crunchiness :")

Yelp
Rosalind is a top tier bakery in San Francisco. They are creative with their baked goods like their use of sourdough for their croissant (if my taste buds aren't mistaken), have very large portions and have quality ingredients and baking skills. Every detail seemed well thought out from the flakiness to the candying of the almond topping. I wasn't too happy at first to pay $7 for a pastry at first but by the end I found it totally worth it.

Yelp
Cinnamon roll is FANTASTIC! Giant, creamy sweet frosting, perfect amount of cinnamon, crisp outer soft inner, the dough it almost croissant like but with a nice pillowy density. Enough for 3-4 people to at least try

Yelp
An odd mix of big loaves of bread and individual pastries. Not really in the mood to take a big loaf back to the office, so focused on the pastries. Everything I tried was really yummy. Ham + Cheese Croissant: Not the typical crescent shaped croissant that I'm used to, more square like a pain au chocolat. Except no chocolat, but tons of thick folded ham. And some cheese too. Really nice against the flaky buttery dough. One of the few savory pastries sold here, so could be part of a lunch in a pinch. Hibiscus Bearclaw: A little sticky. Even more so since they put it in a bag and then the sticky topping gets all over. But despite the mess, it's kinda tasty. The pink sticky glaze was very subtly scented like hibiscus. The inside of the pasty had a nice sweet almond paste. And same signature buttery flaky pastry shell that they do well here. Cinnamon Roll: This was HUGE! Literally the size of my hand and I don't have small hands. A little messy with all the frosting, so keep a few napkins at your desk. The first two rings are flaky and a little dry, like is typical when bakeries attempt cinnamon rolls. So I was a little concerned. But then I got to the inner rings and was so delighted. Soft and full of cinnamon flavor. Just like those cinnamon roll specializing places, which is rare for a bakery to get right. Had some leftovers obviously, but still tasted good the next day. Pumpkin Pear Danish: Loved the center, which seemed to skew more pear than pumpkin. Something great about the pairing for fruit with buttery flaky pastry. Chocolate Croissant: A few bits of hard chocolate surrounded by lots of buttery croissant dough. Kinda wish they were a little more generous with the chocolate though, since there were many bites without. Almond Croissant: This felt like they were cheating. It was a croissant cut in half with almond paste spread in the middle. Always seems more magically when the almost paste is actually baked inside. Also, it feels like having the almond paste baked instead makes the whole inside a bit moister too. It was still decent, but not their best offering. Chocolate Chip Cookie: A very comforting classic cookie. I like how it was a little thick, but not too thick. The oversized chocolate chips were perfect for the thickness. And a nice touch of salt for contrast, but not too salty.

Yelp
Stopped in this morning for the first time and tried the almond poppy muffin -- and honestly, it might be the best poppy muffin I've ever had. Perfectly moist, just the right amount of sweetness, and that almond flavor was amazing. The gal working was super friendly and helpful, which made the experience even better. Can't wait to go back for another muffin (or two)!

Yelp
Rosalind, you by far make the best sourdough bread that I've found in SF! I was so happy to have seen you moved closer to the city and literally dream about your bread. The reason behind the low score is the unpredictability of your hours. This has been the 5th time I've come to grab bread or pastries for friends out of town to try, only be disappointed by you being closed way way way earlier than your times disclose. Honestly it's hard to rave about a bread when I can never buy it for people to try! I completely understand when things arise and you are short staffed so I refrained from writing this the first few times but it's getting kind of ridiculous now. I want to share with others that if you're making a trek to go here, try calling ahead or time!! As for Rosalind; I still love your bread but Please please keep to your hours or share it somehow that you are closed! I'm writing this as I'm sitting outside your shop and no one is picking up your phones on either location!!

Yelp
Participate with Too Good to Go. Very bad experience. Staff is not friendly. Store closed early without notice.

Yelp
The whole wheat sourdough loaf is beyond amazing. It is my number one sourdough in all of San Francisco. It really is the perfect sourdough. I also had a pastry with pink glaze and almond mealy stuff in the middle as well as a square caramel (maybe apple) pastry. Both were so good. Cold brew was also great!

Yelp
So this is for the toogoodtogo app. I originally bought an item from them through the app and was quite excited about it. I shifted my plans to be at the store at the pick up time, which according to their site said that they would be opened. I arrived at 1:30 and the store was already closed. This was a huge waste of time and money.

Yelp
UPDATE - they still don't open before 9~ but the owner is now in the store and service is great (no more grumpy person working there)! Sounds like they will have a full coffee service soon (aka, if you want more than black coffee for now you still may have to go elsewhere). All the items are incredibly delicious - happy to support this great local bakery.

Yelp
Amazing quality - try the nut seed loaf for something satisfying and not sweet. The blue corn cookies have the perfect level of sweetness and a unique taste and look. Matthew is building something great here go check the shop out!

Yelp
In a city full of amazing bread this is a cut above. The story coupled with the goods fantastic combination! Matt and his team crush a daily assortment of everything you didn't know you needed in your life. Get some and get happy

Yelp
They are finally open! Great place to grab a pastry before work. I love their Pacifica location but this one is more convenient for me to visit.
