"Vietnamese-American chef Rosie Nguyen offers a variety of Asian pastries at her in-demand bakery inside the Block’s downtown food hall. That includes ensaymada, a Filipino cheese roll that’s one of the cuisine’s most popular desserts, and ube cake. Nguyen just shared construction progress of Rose Ave’s future home in Woodley Park." - Pat Padua, Tierney Plumb

"Royal purple ube brioche rolls, paired with an equally-vibrant ube butter, is a menu staple at this modern Asian bakery inside D.C.’s Block food hall. Eater DC’s 2021 Bakery of the Year is known for its soft and fluffy pastries with creative flavors like strawberry passion fruit, pandan coconut, and matcha chocolate. The downtown bakery will soon move to a larger space in Woodley Park." - Emily Wishingrad

"Mochi treats show up each week on the pre-order menu at Rosie Nguyen’s in-demand Asian-American bakery. They take the form of glazed mochi crullers or coconut mochi balls on a skewer. Rose Ave. Bakery sells out within minutes of their Sunday afternoon release, but it may be possible to pick some up as a walk-in on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays." - Jamie Liu

"Nguyen makes doughnuts from a brioche dough that folds in roasted sweet potato puree to add more moisture and a caramelized sweetness. They come filled with passionfruit curd — too popular to take off the menu — and other rotating flavors like pandan coconut cream, Thai tea, or Vietnamese coffee. She has a mochi cruller made out of the glutinous rice paste that produces an extra-chewy texture that’s prized in East Asian cultures." - Gabe Hiatt

"Wednesday is typically the busiest prep day of the week for Rose Ave Bakery, but this week, owner Rose Nguyen told her staff at the Asian-American sweets shop downtown to stay home. Nguyen’s staff would normally be preparing doughs for pastries like passionfruit curd doughnuts and matcha chocolate chunk cookies." - Gabe Hiatt

Such a hidden gem located inside the block food hall! The donuts are pretty on the outside and tasty on the inside. Such a good fusion of flavors and textures. My favorite donut was the lychee and strawberry followed by the passion fruit. Its on the pricier side at $4+ per donut but a must try for donut lovers. They also had savory pastries as well if you don’t have a sweet tooth.

11/09/2022: I love it. Their croissants are sooooo savory. Egg and scallion was so flakey and delicious. Brioche donuts nice bite and yummy fillings. I arrived 10 minutes before opening and was 2nd in line. Service was friendly.

I preordered the doughnuts on Sunday - process was smooth. I arrived after 1 on a weekday and there were plenty of street parking available. Picking up my order was easy but I did notice all the walk-ins were sold out by that time. Ordered 4 doughnuts: passion fruit, guava mousse, strawberry rose lychee, and black sesame. They were all good but the passion fruit one was my absolute favorite. Perfect balance of sweet and tangy, good ratio of filling vs doughnut (filled doughnuts are not my faves but these, I could do!). The dough was fluffy and light. I didn’t want to eat it all in one day so I refrigerated what I had left. Warmed it up a bit in the microwave the next day and it was still delicious.

Sept 2021 This is a small place inside a small food court. There are 2-3 other places (the bar is closed due to covid), and Rose Ave Bakery's counter is very small, tucked into the far corner. The place is clean and there is a unisex bathroom by the bakery. The staff were also friendly, efficient, and the lady I talked to was a bit peppy too. All the staff wore masks. Most of the people in line were picking up preorders. It looked like the staff had all the preorders on a cart to the side behind the counter. Also, there were lots of racks of baked goods and a nice display up front of their available baked items. We ordered a number of pastries, cookies, and a slice of ube cake. The ube cake was very good, strong ube flavor, and the icing wasn't too sweet either. All the donuts were good, dense with a good amount of filling. Only complaint was too much sugar sprinkled on the donuts. The peach was also very fresh and very good. The scallion pancake bun was fluffy and tasty, but I was disappointed at the use of excessive spice which drowned out the scallion flavor. All the cookies were very good. In all, excellent food, if a bit expensive. Will most likely come back, but not regularly. I am very interested in trying more of their ube products.

Came in right around lunch on a weekend. Folks aren't joking, they do sell out fast for their baked goods. We were able to get one of the last specialty donuts and it was delicious. There were some interesting flavours too like the pandan one. Another thing that we enjoyed is that the donuts aren't exceedingly sweet which allows you to taste some of the more unique flavours instead of just pure sugar.

Delicious donuts with exciting flavor profiles. Their donuts are light, airy, and not greasy. Our favorites have been the passion fruit, ube, and black sesame cookie. However, you won't find a bad thing on the menu.

This has become one of my favorite bakeries in the area. I'll drive into the city during the weekends just for their baked goods. Highly recommend checking their IG to check availability. I stopped by on a busy Sunday and ordered the Vietnamese coffee, matcha cookie, ube cake slice, Asian pear Kouign Amann, passionfruit, Pandan Coconut, and black sesame donuts. If you don't plan on eating it there fresh. Definitely take it home and toss it in the toaster or air fryer. If you get the donuts they are great after you nuke them in the microwave for a few secs. The Pandan and black sesame donuts were some of the best of ever had. The Kouign Amann is like a really crispy croissant with multiple layers and a fresh jam like compote inside. Really delicious, creative and definitely my favorite. The concept here is awesome like a fusion bakery. Strong French techniques and flavors from Vietnam, Philippines and other Asian countries. I'll definitely be back to try their other signature pastries.

Rose Ave is my favorite bakery in DC! The donuts and pastries are baked to perfection, aren't too sweet, and they are always coming up with the most interesting and unique flavor combinations. Would recommend ordering ahead of time (Sundays are 5pm) for pre-order pickup as they sell out often and the line can be long for walk ins. My favorites are the passionfruit filled donut, kalamansi lemon meringue donut, pandan twinkies, and the ensaymada pastry.
