21 Distinctive Portland Cafes That Roast Their Own Coffee

"Roseline initially launched as a wholesale distributor before establishing its first café in 2018, which is tucked away in the Goat Blocks of Southeast Portland. Its airy interior, floor-to-ceiling windows, and decorative house plants make it another upscale coffee hangout to work away in while drinking pour over, espresso, and pink-peppercorn-cardamom lattes. Roseline has more recently expanded to locations in the KOIN Tower downtown and on Northeast Alberta." - Katrina Yentch, Nathan Williams

Yelp
Nice cafe with your standard options of drinks. There are plenty of seating and they open until 5 or 6. The later hours are definitely appreciated and the cafe is usually at least half full at all hours. There is one in SE and one in NE.

Yelp
No because THIS is my favorite coffee spot in Portland. Semi-sweet mocha is my absolute fave as well as the blueberry muffin. Also a big fan of the vanilla latte and their vegan food options. I drive from Sherwood every weekend just to get coffee from here on my Saturday mornings. I wish I lived closer or I'd come here more often. The environment is great for working/studying as well.

Yelp
A friend recommended this place to me and so I tried it this weekend. My normal go to place isn't here. It was a very modern little place and we had an almond croissant and almond milk lattes. They were ok and interesting but not like our normal local favorite. Way better than Starbucks though! Coffee like wine is so subjective! So go and decide for yourself! Had to give this place a try though!

Yelp
I often drive by this spot and wish I could find a spot to pull over. Today was the day! It's warm and I wanted to try their "standard" espresso so I ordered an iced Americano. They sell a lovely selection of coffees in a couple of sizes. Their packaging is beautiful, too. I asked where they sell their coffee and they said it's at Market of Choice and People's Coop. When I saw the selection of coffee brewing devices on the side of the room, I knew it was going to be wonderful. The barista timed her shots and was super friendly and efficient. My iced Americano was delicious -perfect. My only gripe is there was no menu on the wall..just a tiny menu on the front counter. Will definitely be back. There's some cute seating outside, too.

Yelp
My friend who knows a lot more about coffee than I do says they get incredible beans here and I've got no arguments against that. I got an pourover from ethiopia and it was great. Bright and fruity. No complaints. Excited to try the beans I brought home from there.

Yelp
Found this great coffee shop near the AirBnB we were staying at in Portland. Good coffee, friendly team members. Glad we found this place!

Yelp
If I could give 0 stars, I would. This place was overpriced and not even close to delicious. I spent $17 on an americano and a breakfast sandwich. The sandwich was okay. The coffee was terrible. Literally could not drink it. Tasted like stingy weirdness. They also have no sugar free flavor options. On top of all that, I waited 10 minutes at the counter with literally nobody there. When I started to wonder if they were in the back doing side duties, I hollered "hellllooo". Not trying to be rude but legit wondering if anybody was working there. The barista finally emerged from the bathroom and acted annoyed that I was even there. Beyond terrible. Overpriced, not good and rude service. Don't ever go here. Take me to Starbucks. F**k this place

Yelp
I first had Roseline when I moved to Portland 3.5 years ago at the Good Coffee a few blocks from this location, and was super impressed with their roasts. In fact, while I was excited for Good when they started using their own roasts, I was sad to see them stop using Roseline. I walk past this location in the Goat Blocks pretty regularly, so when I saw the Roseline logo in the window (almost a year ago?), I was excited, and definitely got more excited as I saw activity pick up and work occurring in the space (I mean, kraft paper is only so exciting). Noticed they were open earlier this week, and I've stopped in twice now. They've been empty both times (the weather hasn't helped their case). The space is super well lit, and there's a ton of seating - a large community table that seats 12 or so, a half dozen smaller tables along the perimeter, and a bar along the western window. Pretty spartan look with all light colored woods and black legs, to the point of feeling sterile when it's empty. I've only gotten to-go Americano's in my own container, the first time their Catapult blend (which is one of the roasts I use at home) and the second the Shantawene, both of which have been excellent. Definitely a welcome addition to the Goat Blocks, and a shop I'll likely add to my rotation.

Yelp
Here for the cookie! Still in the display were one last Rye Chocolate Chip and a Ginger cookie. I'm glad I arrived when I did, the cookie was excellent. Roseline gets their treats from an independent baker working out of a commissary kitchen. I wish I could find out more, because this cookie was delicious. The cookie avoids several shortcuts. It did not rely on butter or shortening, and let the Rye flour and quality chocolate do their job. The texture was perfect: deliciously soft from well-baked and delicate dough. Not the gooey, half-baked shortcut to softness. The quality of the ingredients is clear. The cookie is a little too small though... Paired with some of the best coffee beans available in Portland, I really enjoyed my morning here. The clean, modern space of Roseline avoids that sterile feel of many new coffee shops, and is still inviting and comfortable.

Yelp
Absolutely love this coffee shop! Great roast selection, delicious pastries, and just the friendly staff. A must try is either a vanilla latte or chai tea.

Yelp
My party was treated horribly by a young female employee working in the early afternoon on April 3rd. She seemed absolutely miserable and enjoyed taking it out on us, for simply trying to order some coffee to go. She was very demanding and belittling in the way she spoke to us, like literally raising her voice at us over no provocation. I work in the industry too and I would be ashamed of myself if I ever spoke to and treated customers the way she treated us. She also wasn't wearing a mask. Get rid of her, she's making your business look really bad as we all left feeling upset. Will never come back and will tell everyone else I know about this terrible experience.

Yelp
Baristas are super rude. I thought it was just one bad day or something, but I've stopped in 3 times now, and each time they have terrible attitudes and act like you are inconveniencing them. I won't go back. There are much better coffee shops in Portland. Owners, work on your staff.

Yelp
Roseline has long been a powerhouse in the Portland coffee scene and I was excited when they opened up their own shop. Given that the city is filled with tremendous roasters and cafes, it usually takes something special to really earn you notoriety in the city. I was thoroughly impressed with Roseline on my very first visit. The shop is beautiful, the employees are nice, knowledgeable and attentive and the coffee is great. Before the café opened, I'm not sure I lumped Roseline in the best 3 roasteries in the city, but that's why you give each roaster their chance to do it their way. Roseline does. They have done a good enough job to put them in the elite tier of Portland coffee roasters. They've had some out of the box offerings with some brilliant flavor. This place comes highly recommended for coffee aficionados.

Yelp
I liked Roseline right away because it has nice spacious seating and big windows. This was a a great place to work because there was room to spread out at a table with a laptop and a notebook. The tea was lovely, and the baristas were friendly and quick with my order-- one even got my order started while the other helped the person in front of me, so there was barely any wait at all. And finally, this location is wonderful because there is plenty of light! Who doesn't love hanging out in places with lots of light?! I can tell I'll be back here often.

Yelp
My partner and I always stop in for a coffee when shopping at Market of Choice. Baristas are some of the friendliest in Portland. Quality of the roast is top-notch. If you're a drip coffee person, Roseline is for you.

Yelp
A few years ago I started to find the incredible availability of coffee roasters in PDX. While I liked coffee from some places and loved it from others, I didn't know enough to know why or what I liked. I ran into the crew at Roseline and found an incredible team that was 110% about the customer experience, treating you as if you're a guest in their home, and sharing knowledge with out making you feel like an idiot. I can not express how lucky Portland is to have a place like Roseline Coffee Cafe. If you love coffee, or want to love coffee, and want to know a little more from people who want you to like coffee....this is your spot.

Yelp
First time visit and had 2 of the worst caps I've had in the Portland area. Barista was sending milk flying everywhere, espresso was under extracted, milk was burnt and over aerated. Drinks were served spilled. The food, at least, was very good. But the wifi was constantly in and out all day. I wanted to give them another chance, reached out to them after my visit, but no response. There's too many amazing cafes in this town to waste time with a place who doesn't care about their customers.

Yelp
silkiest latte i've ever had. love the coffee here and the quinoa bowls aren't too bad either!

Yelp
I love this spot! Have gotten both pourover and drip and really enjoyed both. Plus it's right by Market of Choice!

Yelp
Made a bachelor party walk 35 minutes one way to indulge my coffee addiction. I had Roseline on my list when visiting Portland, and it did not disappoint. Visited two other top roasters in town, and Roseline was the only one I visited twice. Bonus: the baked goods were some of the best I've had. Brought home a souvenir.. some Kenya Kiria-ini beans. Will definitely order from them in the future. If you like coffee and you find yourself in Portland, don't miss it!

Yelp
Nice comfortable new coffee shop at the Goat Blocks. Cortado was fantastic, but shortbread iced cookie was crumbling. Oh, and no cookie should be $4.00...c'mon, this is Portland, not Seattle, SF or NYC. Beautiful furnishings and great service.

Yelp
Coffee was meh, the baristas were just on their phones giggling. Vibes were just off putting and I'm not really sure why, I just wish the barista's cared more and would stop their conversation...We felt like we walked into someone else's house and were not invited.

Yelp
Very nice people, fast WiFi, good music and good lighting. Also they have fantastic zucchini bread and on tap kombucha. Cool art on the walls as well.

Yelp
A great place to drink good coffee, a chill place to get some work done, very nice staff... can't ask for much more than that.

Jaclyn E.

Yelp
Best coffee roaster in Portland. We've been to pretty much every roaster, and they have our vote. Their tasting notes are spot on, and their coffee has phenomenal flavor.
