The Best Classic Restaurants in Phoenix | Eater Phoenix

"This cheery, brightly painted Mexican food stalwart has been going strong since 1964, turning out a huge selection of AZ-Mex and Sonoran classics, including burritos, enchiladas, tamales, tostadas, and tacos as well as dozens of dishes seldom found all together in one place. Few Mexican restaurants in town offer eight soups, eight breakfast plates (including obscure huevos divorciados), and 16 grilled dishes (including pork chops, ribs, and liver). If there’s still room at the inn, top it all off with capirotada or churros for dessert." - Nikki Buchanan

The Best Tamales in Phoenix, 2021 - Eater Phoenix

"Fresh trays of tamales are available for the taking at Rosita’s Place, a Phoenix institution established in 1964. Handmade green corn or beef tamales are available. As you wait on the tamales, indulge in the hot chips and salsa. Prices are reasonable and portions are generous at Rosita’s. A mini-tamale platter which includes 12 mini red and 12 mini green tamales costs $48, while a dozen regular-sized tamales cost $30." - Rudri Patel

Google
This is an authentic Mexican style restaurant. From the decorations and vibes of the place, one can sense a down home type of cooking is happening here. The staff is friendly and the food is tasty. Overall, a really nice experience.

Google
Decided to try this place out on Mothers Days. As expected, there was a long wait line before getting seated, which again, was to be expected. The place was packed out and they had a live Mariachi Band playing to the crowd. Place felt a bit on the cramped but all together very welcoming. Food wise: the Chips and Salsa were awesome! Just had to start off with that! I ordered a simple Quesadilla but to my surprise, I think I got a cheese thin crisp Pizza. I was a bit confused when it came out but I guess that's just how Quesadillas get done here. Everyone else's dishes were generous proportions and smelled delicious. Plenty food to choose from their Menu so will have to stop by again to try other menu choice. Altogether great spot for a family dinner.

Google
This place is an absolute gem. Quality food. Friendly service. 10/10 recommend. Parking is directly behind the building.

The Eliott Family of 7

Google
Ok at first I was going to say a few unsatisfactory things but after speaking to the manager about the story and history of this place I had a change of heart. Our family tried 4 plates such as the machaca chimichanga and it was very different. They stated that it was a dry jerky type of machaca, not a fan but I can see a select audience for this. Chicken taco 7/10 Carne asada Burro 4/10 Tortilla chips 10/10 Super fresh Rice and Beans 8.5/10 A family friend stated that he was not happy with the fact it was filled with only meat. But again this might be for you but not us. Overall their story of bringing a style of Mexican food that was from the 60s that style was from what was made with what was on hand.

Mr B

Google
Referred by vlog and I highly recommend the chimichanga with beans and rice. Comes with guacamole, sour cream and green/red salsa. (I love green and I tried the red... it's the bomb! FUEGO!) 5 stars AAA+ and two thumbs up. 😎👍👍

First of all let me say we love Rosita’s, so it hurts me writing this review! Our family has been coming to this Phoenix staple for 4 generations the food is great and the atmosphere is fun but I’ve noticed on our most recent visits some shady things when it came time to pay. The first time I let it slide because I assumed it was a mistake but the last two visits I noticed the same “mistakes”like random things being added to our bill or extra charges for drinks we didn’t order, and things not matching the prices on the menu. we dined in maybe 6 months ago and when I got the bill we (a party of 4) were charged for 8 drinks and we all ordered waters. with drinks costing 4.50 each that was an overcharge of 36$. I told the people at the register and got it fixed but I also noticed the sun crisp we ordered was charged for 7.50 but on the menu it was 3.75. They claimed it was a typo but if i knew it was almost double the price on the menu I probably wouldn’t have ordered it. The same thing happened today and I thought to myself if they knew about the typo why haven’t they fixed it yet. Especially since It’s been at least 6 months since the last time we dined there. not only that they double charged us for margaritas. They also tried to charge us for fries we didn’t order. Overall BUYER BEWARE…. I didn’t feel comfortable paying with my card because it seemed shady so I HIGHLY RECOMMEND paying with cash so they cant take more of a tip then what is approved also thoroughly reviewing your receipt! Also they have a new policy that you get charged more if you pay with card so definitely bring cash!

Google
I gave this place plenty of tries. At first I was like meh but after trying the combo plate with that chesse enchilada that would be my go too. Always so good its rare I leave a 5 star rating so that says it all.

Yelp
I love Rosita's Place. Worth any wait. Try the cucumber margarita it's fantastic. Sat in the bar today and enjoyed great drinks, chips and salsa and fantastic Crystal our bartender. Food always the best. It's a casual spot with colorful decor and loud music and the best food

Yelp
The chips and the salsa were very good. I appreciated that the chips were actually hot when they were putting at the table and it was a generous amount.. I ordered three soft tacos. Carne Asada in the first one was a dry, the Machaca lacked flavor. The guacamole needed more salt and lemon. The service was OK. The waitress was very nice, but she didn't come back and check on us.. had to walk up to her and ask her by kitchen for more ice and salsa. Others that are table ordered chorizo and eggs. It was mild and OK. The portions are huge even though à la cart two enchiladas was huge and I guess that was OK. My daughter ate it all. My mom had two crispy beef tacos and could only eat one because it was so big. She said her Machaca was a little bit dry.. Not sure we will come back .

Yelp
Don't. Understand. The. Hype. I love patronizing family establishments and had driven by Rosita's almost every day since moving to this part of town. Portions are gargantuan. Maybe that's why people like it. I ordered a Machaca Chimi and it was almost inedible. The meat was sweet and not yummy at all. My guy ordered a red chile burrito, enchilada style. He said it was the definition of mediocre. He didn't even want to take the uneaten half home. The margarita WAS good. I used $46 of my hard-earned money for less than meh food. I should add that I *love* Mexican food and this was the first time I have written a review like this because it's the first time I could not enjoy the cuisine.

Yelp
Let's start by saying the portion sizes is huge. The chimichanga was amazing and so huge it was the green chilli. The enchiladas were so tasty. Huge margarita for the price. This place is very unassuming but definitely worth going.

Yelp
Always our goto when in town, we even did a stop over flight and quick uber to eat here. You have to move away to understand just how good they are...Service always great so why you just reading? Head over and see for yourself

Yelp
I had the Tampiqueño steak for lunch. The steak tasted bad like old meat. It was just sad because it was the first time I had eaten there. The service was slow and overall just bad the server was just hanging out in the kitchen. I had to get another server to help me. And when they took the plate back to the kitchen. She came running out of the kitchen and asked me what was bad I told her the meat do you want something else not even a sorry about that nothing. And she said ok I'll bring your ticket. It took her 10 minutes to bring that. The ambiance was nice and it looked nice and clean. Needless to say But I won't be returning to this place

Yelp
Old school Mexican restaurant in the Central Phoenix area. FYI - parking lot is behind the building. Saltillo tiles, bright colors, booths and tables. A bit of a nostalgic flair. The menu covers all the standards - enchiladas, burritos, tacos, etc. The service is fast and friendly. Chips and salsa are provided when you are seated. Comes with two salsas - red (spicy) and green (tangy). Both are good. I opted for the Rosita's combo - enchilada, taco, and tamale plus rice and beans. It was very good. Also, was a lot of food. Should have eaten less chips as I could not finish it. N*joy!

Yelp
Revisited the place it has been a pleasure going there and the food is absolutely amazing. Amazing service and the best Mexican food in the state of Arizona.
google avatar

Yelp
The food is always good. The service, is all right. It's good--but could be better (-they never come around if you want refills, etc.-). It's always clean and very decorative.

Yelp
Last week my friends/co-workers of OVER 30 years met up at Rosita's place for lunch! It was amazing from beginning to end!! Yummy chips and 2 kinds of salsa!! I ordered the chicken mole enchiladas, boy they were huge! And VERY DELICIOUS!! The owner, Marylou & the wait staff were soo accommodating for our group of 9 and super nice! Everyone loved their food! Highly recommend if your craving authentic Mexican Food!! Thank you Rosita's Place!! Sorry, I forgot to take a pic of my food!!
google avatar

Yelp
Food was amazing. Served hot and fresh. Taste was amazing. Like homemade food. Ambiance was great. Service was great. Only thing is they charge for chips but not an issue for me. Recommend their mole and enchiladas. They also have menudo served in huge bowls to !

Yelp
I wish I had more pictures to post here, and I'll edit in the future but, I've been coming here since I was a child. Amazing food!! It does get busy but no brainer, the food is great! The ambience is alive, good music, good drinks. Definitely a favorite go to. I've tried so many different items but I had to recommend this place. Give it a try, I promise you wont be disappointed.

Yelp
Really good old style Mexican food, well seasoned without being overly spicy hot. We had a machaca burro and a taco combo plate, both served with rice and beans. The flavor highlight, interestingly enough, was the rice, which was exceptionally well seasoned. The machaca was tasty, moist, and tender and the tacos earned raves from my partner. Chips and salsas (red and green) come when you're seated. Large parking lot is behind the building. Service was pleasant and efficient. Overall a great experience
google avatar

Yelp
Coworkers brought me here and we had a great lunch! If you've never been, parking is in the back and it gets busy real quick! It was busy inside but we were seated right away. They have a great menu with a lot of yummy choices. *One thing that is not typical of a Mexican restaurant (or at least pre-Covid) is that they charge for chips/salsa after the first free order. Just something to be aware of. I wasn't that hungry so I didn't want anything heavy like I would normally order. I settled for the taquitos with rice & beans. I had asked that my taquitos have green sauce on them but the waitress forgot. She eventually did bring me a bowl of green sauce and they were yummy (not included in the pic) The beans and rice had great flavor, like they were from home. Despite some other reviews, I found this place to be authentic. My coworkers had ordered some great food. I will be back to visit again.
google avatar

Bill M.

Yelp
Good food and you better like it hot! The hot sauce for the chips was great, unfortunately too hot for 1/2 the table. Everyone seemed to like their food along with ample servings size.

Yelp
We came to Rositas on a recommendation from a friend. We arrived near 10:30 am and there was a line. By the time we were seated and left, the line was out the door! Loved that. The terracotta tile floor, makes it feel so homy. There was music playing but it's not overbearing or overwhelming. We sat at a booth. The table had been wiped clean. Our waters and horchata were brought first and the red and green salsas. The server brought us our chips about 10min later. She looked like only 1 of 2 servers there and the place was packed, so I didn't stress. But when the chips came, they were fresh and super hot. The most excellent chips I have ever had. I ordered the chicken mole and hubs ordered Rositas special. The chicken on my dish was so tender. The mole sauce was very good. Not spicy at all. ( I love spicy food. I just can't eat it anymore :( ) It comes with tortillas but I chose corn, I made a mistake as hubs said he saw someone else with flour tortillas that looked homemade. The corn were not homemade. I tasted the tamale and enchilada on my husbands plate, I like them both. They each had their own sauce and distinct flavor profile. I didn't taste his beef and potato taco. But he said it was the best crispy taco he has had. Final thought: the rice and beans were out of this world. The beans are so creamy and the rice was done just right! I've been looking for a place for two years that meets my love of another restaurant in CA, that no other restaurant has ever been able to meet all the criteria's I have to match that place, until now, and it's Rosita's for sure.
google avatar

Yelp
Great old school Sonora style Mexican cantina. They have cute little bar in the back. Great service. Love the green sauce and the rice and beans. Large portions and reasonable prices. About as good as Mexican gets in Phoenix these days. If you want generous portions and reasonable prices give this place a try Only down side is they serve Pepsi products
google avatar

Yessi C.

Yelp
My fiancé introduced me to this place a couple years back and we always try to come at least once a month! They have a variation of food but he always gets the red menudo and I always try to change it up. The combo platter was delicious and the red enchilada sauce was perfect in flavor. The red menudo is always very tasteful and we have never had an issue with any of the food or the service here.
google avatar

Lisa G.

Yelp
I have eaten and many Mexican food restaurants and this is one of the best in the valley. My friend had the short ribs which came with rice and beans. While he enjoyed the short ribs very much, he is still talking about how good the beans are. My other friend had albondigas soup and said it was delish. I had a cheese enchilada and bean tostada and it was also delish. Chips and salsa were yum. Service was okay...it's a very busy restaurant and seating kind of on the negative side, but the food made up for it. Definitely recommend for authentic Mexican food!
google avatar

Fred C.

Yelp
When you looking for a delicious Mexican food fix this is the place to come to. They've been serving this wonderful food since 1964!
google avatar

R P.

Yelp
Here are some update pictures of the new menus. The food is still decent here but the service needs to be improved.

Tony M.

Yelp
Food is usually 8 out of 10 but often the green chili beef enchiladas meat is tough. They took away Dr Pepper which was my favorite drink, so know I save $4 on that and bring in my Dr Pepper from Circle K. Service is good until you get the food and then u will wait a long time to pay check. Ambience is nice. Don't try calling in an order for pick up. They either take phone off the hook or someone is chatting for a long time. Received busy signal 18 times in an hour. I finally gave up.
google avatar

Norma G.

Yelp
I had not been here in several years. I came last week, the food is delicious. The only down fall is the service is very slow. I'm here for the 2nd time to place an order to go. The Owner saw me standing at the entrance an walked away. After 10 mins I was ready to walk out and a server came and I was finally able to place my order. If the food wasn't so good I wouldn't bother! :-/ fyi the chicken mole enchilada is delicious!
google avatar

Allison B.

Yelp
Rosita's is consistently a home run. 10/10 would recommend! Food is always on point. The chips come out hot with fresh home made salsas. They grate the cheeses fresh for enchiladas, tacos, tostadas, etc. I'm a big fan of the machada and the shredded chicken is very moist. Their crunchy tacos are my favorite. Service is usually good. The interior gives off a hole in the wall type of vibe. Just note that they observe Mexican holidays. We came in around Halloween and the restaurant was closed in observance of dia de los muertos.

T S.

Yelp
The worst Mexican food ever had in my life and I'm Mexican. My sister and I went. It was disgusting. The wait was about 30 minutes before you got your food. It's loud you can't even hear yourself. Think the bathrooms were dirty and the food was disgusting. I ordered a pizza with red chili on it and the beef chunks Were about an inch and a half they were chunky big pieces of meat on there. The red chili was disgusting when I took a bite of the beef. If that's what you call it I'm gonna tell you it was as if it was deer meat !! like they're using something else besides beef. I think they're getting roadkill they're doing Squirrels or even snakes in Arizona is disgusting not go there. My sister had combination. It was so salty that you had a heart attack. Just sitting there. These people need to get it together. They need to stop doing that tricking people with the beef that they use if that's what they call it, disgusting shame
google avatar

Denny K.

Yelp
Love the food and service here. If you like fresh chips and green and red hot sauce this is the place to receive it.
google avatar

Matthew M.

Yelp
This was a very interesting experience. I happened to find this place using yelp and was not disappointed at all. I had the posole which was fantastic. Small place, great food, great people. Definitely give this place a try if you're in the neighborhood.

Richard G.

Yelp
My friend wanted you to go to Rosita's yesterday for his birthday. I had not eaten there in several years. We arrived about 11:30 to avoid the lunch rush that never appeared. My birthday friend ordered the pig skin green chili and liked his food. I ordered beef red chili, rice and beans. My order was about twice the size of what a person needs. I ate 2 bites wrinkled up my napkin and threw it on top. Mushy flavorless meat and tasteless red chili. My son ordered cheese enchiladas that arrived with cheese not melted. On top of the bad food they charge for initial order of chips. Never going back. As with a lot of these restaurants that have been around 50 plus years your time is over and time to call it a day.
google avatar

Troy U.

Yelp
Since moving to Phoenix I had tried many different Mexican spots but none have a place in my heart like this place. It has a very cozy and homey atmosphere with amazing food. One of my main criteria for picking a Mexican restaurant is if that place is too hot to touch when they bring it to me and this place hits it on the nose every time. The green chili beef enchiladas with the red chili tamale is my main go to. They also have amazing pozole that warms the soul. And the service is amazing almost like clock work they come by just at the right time in between eating. You have to give this place a try it has become the only place I will go to for some Mexican cuisine.

Ed B.

Yelp
Excellent northern Mexico home style food. My grandmother's favorite place to eat after Sunday's Mass.

Jessica N.

Yelp
I ordered flautas, they were hard and obviously cooked way before I ordered them as they were completely dry. Absolutely disgusting, WONT BE BACK. What's even crazier is that our server never even came by to ask how our food was! 60 dollars in total.....No thanks ROCIO!

Amira Lajam S.

Yelp
Delicious food, amazing mango margarita and great service I recommend to come and check this restaurant
google avatar

mengzi w.

Yelp
I was wondering why they seemed to cost a bit more than expected but the plates were YUGE and delicious! The Mnuendo was a good experience, light and yet tasty. The chimichanga was simply awesome! Lots of flavor and packed with ingredients, it's like a Mexican version of Beef Wellington.
google avatar

Scott B.

Yelp
Get to this home in the wall! It's a joint, so come for well prepared, large plate, home cooking Mexican food. The ambiance is HITW and bright colors, so you're getting the authentic deal. The Horchata was delish, and the enchiladas and chimichanga all a hit. If you ate here everyday, your gut would pay for it... but it's a great place for an every so often dinner.
google avatar

Dan M.

Yelp
This place is legit! We ordered the Rositas Special and Let me tell you...you better be hungry! It came with a beef/potato taco, cheese enchilada, tamale with green sauce & chiles and beans & rice! All for only $15! The food was soooo good! Very flavorful & tasted freshly made! The Horchata was on point too! We also got the chips and salsa, both of which, the green and red sauce were perfectly spicy! Next time were in the area visiting my kid at ASU, we'll be stopping here!
google avatar

madi d.

Yelp
When Los Compadres went downhill and subsequently closed, we tried this place and it seems pretty good about a year or two ago. Then I decided to get takeout about a month ago and it was not so great or maybe my memory was foggy that inaugural night? The quest for 70s Sonoran Mexican food lives on.
google avatar

Alan S.

Yelp
Really good flavor. Kind of pricy. Almost $20 per person. The machaca was not my favorite as it is not authentic machaca. The chicken chimichanga was really good though.

Marcus S.

Yelp
Great salsas. Unapologetically spicy. Machaca dinner is one of the best dishes in AZ.
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
This place has delicious food on their menu! You have got to try this place if you haven't. The staff here are friendly and prompt with their service!
google avatar

Esteban O.

Yelp
I've been eating here for years and I would normally rate it higher but todays experience was disappoint. Walk in and instead of being seated I was given a menu and told to seat myself. Do as I'm told and sit for 10 minutes without being acknowledged. Multiple employees walked past me and nothing. I gave up and left. If this is the new norm for service I'll not be back.

Anjelica C.

Yelp
Wait time to be seated isn't to long. After being seated we waited 20min for our server to take our order. Meanwhile the people next to us were seated right away and order taken promptly. Service is bad. I won't be coming back here. Plenty of other small businesses who deserve my hard money.
google avatar

Jay A.

Yelp
Okay, so I discovered this place after driving by it for most of my life and seeing the loooooong line outside almost constantly. I moved in the area and have gone here many times now. I'll tell you it's some of the best in town! Menudo is so good, and a huge portion full of tripe. The tacos are huge and full of flavor. I once made a mistake of ordering one on the side- I couldn't finish it ! If you love cheese crisps their is so delightful and spicy so watch out if you're not a fan of spice. You must try this place, but if you're going on the weekend for breakfast or lunch be prepared to wait a while. 100% worth the wait though.

Jesus A.

Yelp
Amazing food, service, and ambiance! Chimichanga was awesome definitely need to stop by if you land in Phx, AZ!
google avatar

Martina A.

Yelp
I have been coming since I was a baby, and now I take my Mom, Aunt, and Daughter almost every week. My Mom and Aunt will always recommend machaca anything, and my daughter loves the red tamales, and we love the white menudo. You really can't go wrong here.

Tom T.

Yelp
This is our families favorite Restaurant. The food is amazing however today the service was horrible . Also got flan for the first time , they call it Mexican custard , it's probably the worst I have ever had , even filebertos flan is better than theirs . It they can improve on that I would have given them a perfect 5 .

Anthony N.

Yelp
This restaurant doesn't need a review. The ambiance, service and quality of food speak for itself. Hefty, delicious portions that are worth every penny. Affordable meals and owner treats patrons like family.
google avatar

Renee H.

Yelp
I ordered carne asada tacos on #TacoTuesday and they were im coming back for chicken mole enchiladas and the chimichanga. they were recommended and looked amazing.

Yelp
8year update review. We came here for Father's Day breakfast 2021. This is one of my top 5 go to spots in the valley. It has a big selection of food. I chose the red chile chimichanga covers I. Green sauce with beans. My daughter got the red menudo and sister got enchiladas with egg on top. Dad had the divorced eggs, he got them all red instead of green and red. I topped of with a Tecate Michelada. They serve a green and red salsa with chips that's got some kick. But it's delicious. Prices are still incredibly reasonable with most plates under $11.00. Definitely try this spot if you haven't. IG: @iamteddycastro #teddycastro

Yelp
I can't give a higher or better review of this place!! Best Mexican food in Arizona. Period full stop. Always great service too. Now go get ya some! Yelp on!

Nick R.

Yelp
This is one if not the best place for Sonoran Mexican food. Ordered a margarita which was made fresh and had chips and salsa while I read the menu. Chips came out fresh and was given 2 salsas. Ordered the green chili enchiladas which were out of this world.
