Where to Eat in Footscray, Melbourne’s Most Exciting Food Neighborhood | Eater

"A Malaysian-Chinese family-run spot famed for theatrical roti dough tossing and paper-thin roti canai served with sambal, curry and dahl (prices start modestly), plus a Malaysian banquet menu that can include whole grilled fish with a spicy ginger-lemongrass-tamarind sauce, beef rendang and water spinach stir-fried in shrimp paste." - Jess Ho

Really disappointed with today’s takeaway from Roti Road. The roti has noticeably shrunk in portion and lacked the usual fluffiness. The chicken satay was dry and tough and the satay sauce so watery — not the juicy skewers we used to enjoy. Sadly, the quality has dropped, and it’s not the same standard anymore. Hope things improve, as we used to love ordering from here.

Roti has to be one of my all-time favourite snacks. And as many of you know, I’m a big fan of Malaysian cuisine—think noodles, tofu, rich sauces, and steaming bowls of rice. But a great roti? Now that’s harder to find. I’m always on the hunt for that perfect balance: crispy on the outside, soft and stretchy inside—but never doughy. #RotiRoad in Footscray has nailed it. Their roti is a plate-served marvel—golden, flaky layers that have been folded and stretched again and again before hitting the hot griddle. It arrives warm, crisp-edged, and served with a side of light dahl, curry, and fish sauce. The combination is simple but deeply satisfying and exactly the kind of comfort food you want on a chilly Melbourne day. Big thanks to the staff for the friendly service! Other notes: ✔️ Spotlessly clean 🚻 Toilets available 👶 High chairs available 🚗 Parking can be tricky, so public transport is your best bet 🌱 Most dietary requirements catered for #tripadvisor #tripadvisorreview #googlelocalguide #letsguide #thewanderingreviewer #malaysianfood #foodiefootscray #rotilove #rotiroad

The food was average, service is good, the price is fair. The place is busy for a rainy week night. 👍

At first, I was quite impressed by the decor and the all-over vibe of the place. It seemed family-friendly and warm. The staff were prompt and nice, too. The parts where it lost points from me are: 1. They ask for an extra dollar if you don't take ice in your drink because that means more juice! I would really urge the management to review this policy and change it. I've not seen this type of price hike. It seems very greedy and unfair. 2. The taste of the food did not seem at par with Malaysian food. It didn't taste like sambal in the fried rice at all, and the chicken was very oily. I was told sambal is mixed with fried rice, but it just tasted like an average bowl of fried rice with no flavour and hard grains! Honestly, I was a bit disappointed. The price was not that far off, so I would request them to work on the dishes to bring the authenticity more. I also tried one of their dessert but I did not enjoy it that much either.

Really enjoyed the food, XO pineapple fried rice topped everything. Curry sauce in roti canai was mouth watering. The only con is service was a bit haphazard. I got my soup first and then the main course in 2mins skipping the appetisers. Within 3 mins all the items were on our table.

Google
By far the best Nasi Goreng we’ve tried in Melbourne. Roti is delicious but personally prefers it to be crispier. Chicken satay is flavourful. Enjoyed dining in the spacious and clean environment.

Had a great experience at Roti Road! The food was full of flavour,The curry was rich and delicious, and everything came out fresh and hot. Staff were friendly and attentive without being overbearing. The atmosphere was cozy but lively, making it a great spot for both casual meals and dinner with friends. Will definitely be coming back to try more of the menu!

Yelp
Had dinner here. I think I over curried myself. It was good to eat during, but regretful afterwards! I'm off curry for a while lol Seriously though, pretty underwhelming. I wasn't really blown away by it. Staff are great though and the place is super clean!

Yelp
Must order the Roti Canai!! It's just as awesome everytime, the one in highpoint also does a Roti wrap which is so delish! Great food, great service, go alone, take a mate or the whole team

Yelp
Roti Rd is exactly what the Scray needed - a place you can take 20 friends and share as much authentic Malaysian as you can handle. Just when you think it's time to head off and run the gauntlet of the Scray at night, the Roti tossing will begin matching anything that Bryan Brown and Tom Cruise in Cocktail could fake. My advice is to order extra roti as you'll need it to soak up the goodness. Say hi to Matthew one of the owners, he's super friendly and chatty.

Yelp
Simple, tasty Malaysian food. The highlight is in the name - delicious, moist roti. If you're lucky, you'll be dining during a scheduled dance break, where one of the staff spin and bust a move with a roti to music. Laksa is highly recommended, it's considered one of the best in Melbourne.

Yelp
This is far from my favourite roti place, and it's overpriced for what it is too. However, it is a nice place to go and share some desserts and different drinks with other people.

Yelp
Friendly staff. Came here on a busy Sunday, although we had a booking we had a few more people than expected, they very happily accomodated for all of us.

Yelp
It's really a great place to eat, with groups of just with a friend. They got nice space and different seating areas. Anyway the food here is pretty good (not the beef rendang though, it's gross) and the drink is quite authentic. I'd recommend the Roti Tissue for dessert. All the food is quite cheap and good portion. The staffs are quite good and available. It's definitely one of the good Malaysian in Melbourne.

Yelp
Rude and unhelpful manager. Left without ordering. He has no clue about customer service. Its not his restaurant so he does not care it seems

Yelp
Roti was delicious however Vegetable Laksa so spicy it was inedible (and I LOVE spicy food). Lost the laksa flavour to the amount of spice.

Yelp
Lalda really disapointing full off noddles very little anything else and oily for $13.50 where other places around 10.00 and 10 times better! Will not go back uck
