Best Classic Restaurants in Fort Worth | Eater Dallas

"Roy Pope Grocery was established in 1943 and remains one of Fort Worth’s hidden gems. It is part grocery store, part deli, and an all-around local favorite. Roy Pope is known for being a great spot to grab a sandwich, soup, and salad, as well as grab-and-go dinners and daily specials like fried chicken, Salisbury steak, prime rib, and other freshly made comfort classics. If you pass by on any given evening, you’ll see friends, families, and couples sitting on the patio sharing light bites over a bottle of wine or cold beer. Be sure to check out its website to see daily specials on wine, beer, and light bites. Vibe check: Expect to chat with the table next to you and compare notes on what you ate. It’s a social spot." - Michael Ellington

Google
Super cute place with great selections and amazing sandwiches! I got a gluten free sandwich and a gluten free slice of cake. Both were outstandingly fresh and delicious! The grocery selection is perfect for a quick grocery run or even planning a meal. They have indoor and outdoor seating or you can get it to go. Tons of gluten free options, which made me super happy!

Went to lunch with the guys today at Roy Pope Grocery Fort Worth. I had their Cuban sandwich and coffee. The place is NOT what I expected. It is artsy, intriguing, comfortable and (Oh Yeah), delicious. So many elements. Go. Enjoy. I spent a little extra because it really has groceries, too. Peach Ginger preserves. Yum. Definitely going back.

Traditional neighborhood grocery with modern updates. Breakfast burritos offered at the coffee bar, sandwiches, and hot plates. And of course basic grocery staples. Had the pesto chicken sandwich which was hot melty and perfect. Kiddo had a PB&j and we ate on the lovely little patio.

Google
A step back into a simpler time where the people are all friendly and helpful and the store isn’t over an acre inside. Everything you need can be found here. The butcher shop & deli have excellent prepared foods and monster hamburgers. Might be the best in town!

Google
Extremely friendly staff. Great sandwich, I had the Italian and it was big enough for a good lunch. The grocery party had some prices that were high and some that where very reasonable. I would love to live a block or two away and walk here to have lunch on my days off. A good little hometown experience. Parking in back.

Google
Great studying spot with delicious drinks at your fingertips. Deli and coffee shop are inside the store which was perfect for a whole day of studying. There was a group doing a flower arrangement class which I hope to come back and do one day. Super cute spot!

Google
Food was very well prepaired with tons of options. I did not spend enough time looking over the menu before I placed my order but realized I wanted one of everything.

Google
I’d give this place 5 stars for the cinnamon roll alone. Full Speed coffee was great and sugary. Taco filling was great as was salsa, while tortillas left something to be desired. Niche selection of grocery items, so you might not be able to get everything you want. They were out of eggs when I went.

Yelp
I've gone for lunch twice. Both times, the sandwiches I ordered were delish. I'd go again.

Yelp
Chicken Pot Pie, anyone? Well... they got it! They got a darn good one! Take and Bake, either frozen or thawed. We were given this hot tip by a friend who knows her Great British Bake Off aka who knows her pies and boy... are we glad we followed her lead. The Chicken Pot Pie was absolutely magnificent! It was full of warm cozy gravy with chicken, peas, potatoes, carrots, and celery. We enjoyed it so much that the next day we went and bought two to have in our freezer for a rainy or snowy day. Other than Chicken Pot Pie... they have everything! Lol, seriously though. They have everything: groceries, alcohol, a coffee shop, a deli, a butchery, desserts and must I go on? You'll just have to go check it out. It'd make for a great Happy Hour or Coffee Date with a gal pal. (:

Yelp
This store is an over priced small grocery store with terrible customer service. I ordered a to go order of 3 sandwiches. There were about 15-20 people in the restaurant all of which were already eating. We ordered and it took almost 30 minutes for the order to be made. The employees were just standing around with no sense of urgency. And to top it all off the food is mid at best. I will never go here again and recommend no one else ever go. The only reason is the place is in business is they only need to sell 4 items per day due to how high everything is marked up

Yelp
I'm gonna be thinking about their Reuben for a long time. It was perfect. Well balanced flavor, not too heavy on the meats, perfectly cheesy.... Iconic.

Yelp
Stopped here for a burger on the way to the Stock Show. Delicious burger at a great price. Fantastic service, and super cute patio to enjoy your meal on. Highly recommend! In addition to their meals they have a coffee bar and an adorable market to buy groceries.

Yelp
I've tried breakfast tacos from all over the Fort and Roy Pope definitely has the BEST Breakfast Taco in Fort Worth. Their home-made salsa is out of this world; with the perfect mix of lime, cilantro and tomato! Try the Red Salsa AND Green Salsa, both are made in house and each salsa is amazing. Absolutely delicious- flavorful eggs, potatoes, cheese and brisket inside the tacos. Very reasonably priced, worth the drive

Robert P.

Yelp
Great sandwiches. A little pricey, but in the end worth it. The Reuben is one of the best I've ever had outside of New York City

Yelp
Where to start? Let's just say I enjoy visiting unique neighborhood grocers, small markets, and tiny restaurants. Here, you will get 3 in one! This neighborhood grocer have many many layers to unwrap. Explore fine wines from several countries, hard or soft cheeses, the coffee bar, wines by the glass, sample salads, gourmet deli meats, daily specials or take a fresh baguette loaf to bake at home. Even frozen custard with toppings. This shopping visit began with Lisa in the delicatessen. Lisa was attentive and friendly and all smiles. When I arrived at the counter to pay she complimented my MFK baccarat rouge 540 parfum saying the fragrance was delightfully fresh and floral. I said thanks and where's the Caesar salad!? Lisa laughed and asked if I needed plastic ware. I picked up 3 salads, roasted vegetables, and a sample container of key lime dessert that needed more lime juice or lime zest for an expected tartness. Good nonetheless. As I explored the wines of the world I picked up Prosecco to pair with baked Brie later with fig spread. In my opinion, the wine prices are comparable to that of CM and World Market. But of course, a smaller selection of fine wines this is a small grocer. Jace was extremely helpful. He did ensure I received my ready salads and roasted vegetable all imaginable to pair with my glorious triple cheesy grilled cheese sandwich. That cheese pull thou!! Worth every cheesy calorie. I enjoyed a green tea and grilled cheese on the perfect patio in a quite neighborhood while watching the slow flow of traffic. Great ending to a busy Saturday afternoon. I will return but with hubby in hand. He would give their freshly ground beef burger a try.

Yelp
small, upscae, boutique grocery with awesome deli, great wine selection and high quality produce, dairy and meats. cusyomer service is super. Their reincarnation is exactly as they have been since I began shopping with them in 1968. Definitely a Fort Worth treasure.

Pat M.

Yelp
I had heard really good thing's about this place. However I was disappointed. The food is all prepared before you arrive so all they do is reheat it in a microwave when you order. So needless to say I do not think I will be returning. I prefer my food freshly made after I order.

Steve D.

Yelp
3rd wine event our family has attended! Never disappoints!! Extremely welcoming and knowledgeable about wines

Yelp
What a precious little neighborhood grocer!! I mean seriously. You can actually purchase all you need for making dinner from wine to a butcher's case. Or you can drop by for one of the daily lunch specials. Today was chicken fried steak which came with 2 sides. I got mashed potatoes and collards. They were delicious although the steak was a tad salty - nothing too major though. The breading stayed with the meat. That's huge for me. Also - NO gristles! Take note that the inside dining area will fill up around noon so I ended up on the patio. Thankfully it wasn't as hot - relatively speaking - today as it has been. I wandered back in after eating and left with banana pudding. It was darn good! Had a lot of vanilla wafers. I love soggy banana pudding wafers. They open at 7 and have breakfast burritos at the coffee bar. The staff was outstanding! I think they like their jobs. Note to self: you can't tip using a credit card so make sure to have cash. A decent amount of parking in the small front and back lots. Street parking is also available.

Yelp
I haven't been in this place since I was in my early teens and when it was the old" RP. This place is cute, updated and the employees that work here are nice. We ordered the Burgers with fries, and we were extremely surprised at how delicious they were! It took a few minutes for these special burgers to be made but we didn't mind. We sat out on the patio and enjoyed the dog friendly porch and the yuppie peep vibe. Our ordered arrived packed up and we chowed down on our order. We were delightfully happy burger eating folks. Very tasty, cooked to perfection and loved the delicate preparation. The fries were tasty, not to salty and they were hot! We will venture back and maybe try one of the fresh sandwiches! Can't wait! Must try! Will be back!

Yelp
Wayyyyyy to expensive ! Ordered 2 sandwiches AND THEY WERE SMALL, like the kind you'd make at home. And a bag of chips Cost: $28 (no drinks) A bit steep. Patio was nice to sit out on but not for the cost.

A W.

Yelp
I love going here for coffee, breakfast burritos and for lunch. Great neighborhood spot to meet friends. Friendly service and lovely patio. I've tried several things from the counter service and hot food. I've never gotten anything I didn't like but the king ranch chicken is maybe my favorite.
google avatar

Jacob L.

Yelp
Good good and friendly workers. High prices on drinks. Almost $5 for an unsweet tea is a little strange. But it is a good hangout spot inside and outside. Their prices are just really high
google avatar

Abby W.

Yelp
Stopped in today after church to grab a quick sandwich. They are super friendly. I ordered the club sandwich on potato bread. Lots of meat fresh lettuce, tomatoes and cheese. My husband got the grilled cheese sandwich. LOTS of cheese! The iced tea was good but I think I'll come back one evening for a glass of wine on the patio. They have a list of their daily specials on the table. I noticed Sunday is pot roast and that sounds really good. Maybe I'll come on a Wednesday for the King Ranch Casserole!? Maybe I'll just go both days so I don't miss out on either.
google avatar

Marten C.

Yelp
Unfortunately, this is an over priced grocery store that simply exist to help cater to a certain over privileged set of individuals who lost their values and their ways so long ago. When I went into this establishment, I was treated like I did not belong just because I didn't know everyone's name when I walked in the door I felt very uncomfortable very not welcome. I would advise staying over there's a cop.

Yelp
Dare I say the best burger in Fort Worth?! Seriously, I will be back when I want a delicious homemade burger. My husband loved his as well. And the fries are solid. I went back for another round. Cute space and lovely patio, kid and dog friendly! I will be back to try the breakfast tacos I keep hearing so much about!

Joyce S.

Yelp
I bought a chicken pot pie from the new Roy Pope. It did not have a crust on the bottom and had a chicken splinter in it. It was also soupy. Later, I ordered fried chicken. The man waiting on me, used his gloved fingers (after touching many other things) to reach in and get it. He then set it on the counter that was dirty and nasty. I told him I didn't like the way he handled food. He went to the back and brought out a piece of chicken that was partially done. Never will I return to the new Roy Pope.

Charles A.

Yelp
1st visit here. I went for a hamburger and I was not disappointed!!! Nice place, restaurant , some grocery, some prepared food to take home, and coffee bar!!! Will be back for another hamburger!!!!

Yelp
Clean. Friendly. Delicious. Best sandwiches in Fort Worth. I would go back every day for lunch.

Thomas K.

Yelp
Convenience is nice but over priced and poorly run butcher/kitchen. Decided to give this place a try and get sandwiches for lunch last week and it took the staff 15 mins and 3 tries to make their Country Club (which has 8 ingredients) minus 3 of those ingredients (tomatoes, mayo and house Dijon). After 15 mins, they still messed it up and included tomatoes. I gave them the benefit of the doubt and chalked it up to a tough day for them. Decided to give them a try this week. The staff person who took my order clearly wrote what not to include on the sandwich and they included everything on it after taking another 10 mins to make their Country club. I came back to get the correct sandwich, which took another 10 mins, and I was asked to physical check to make sure a sandwich which has 5 ingredients total, was done correctly...what lol?? Their excuse was it wasn't cleared stated on the ticket, despite the ticket clearing saying what not to include and the staff person writing it down clearly on the order ticket and holding it in their hand as they gave me my order. Also, they seem to have a complete lack of understanding about how food orders disappear. While waiting, 3 kitchen staff were confused on how orders were disappearing and that "someone" took some orders despite them physically having to hand the meals to customers and they obviously messed up orders. Their coffee might be good (haven't tried) but what a waste of time and energy going here. Unfortunate...

Patty T.

Yelp
I will never order from Roy Pope Grocery again, ordered through Favor for coworkers & myself, they charged me 8.00 extra claiming if an order is over 60.00 they charge 8.00, 3 prime rib sandwiches @15.00 each, 1 hamburger @11.00 and 1 fry@3.50 which totals up to 59.50, their explanation was that tax was added to each item which of course hiked the total to over 60.00, if you look at the receipt I posted it does not show each item with tax added, so they lied just to charge the 8.00, if this is how they conduct their business, I'm out.

Yelp
Fantastic selections for food and wine. Service is always smiling. The knowledgeable staff will even help with menu and recipe ideas.

Yelp
A great place for lunch, take out or eat in dinner, purchasing dinner ingredients or wine. Sandwiches are so big we split one and it was plenty. We had tuna on potato bread with piping hot fries. A hotbar has entrees along with take out cold items to take home and heat up. They are a must go to if you are in the Camp Bowie area. Chic cool interior with a nice patio. They also have a coffee/tea bar and custard ( during warm weather). High end grocery items and fresh produce are available. Pies, cakes can be by the slice or whole.

Paul O.

Yelp
Delightful local market with great service. Fun vibes & patio too! Wine tasting weekly. The store is very clean and organized. Pet friendly patio!!! Butcher/wines/organics! Oh my!
google avatar

Yelp
great local Fort Worth staple! best for wine, coffee, breakfast and porch vibes! You will not be disappointed, ask for Jace, he's the best!
google avatar

Amanda J.

Yelp
I just love this place. The coffee shop always provides the perfect pick me up, the deli counter has some of the tastiest sandwiches in Fort Worth and the market is fully stocked with grocery needs and tons of awesome beer and wine. Love the vibes and the folks are helpful and kind. Stop in for a revamped yet classic Fort Worth experience!

J D.

Yelp
One of our favs GOING OUT OF BUSINESS. Long time neighborhood establishment. Fresh butcher shop meats. The food from the deli is FANTASTIC and the chief is sooo kind and accommodating. I would give higher rating but the other guy behind the counter, old Larry, can be rude. He serves his older "regulars" so we just look past him. Hope someone buys the place and keep it going as is.

Yelp
So.....Roy Pope literally has one of the very few 5 star ratings on YELP...and the stellar reviews of their hot counter drew me in....so I HAD to check it out. Did recon one evening after work to find an empty store with some great looking steaks in a meat counter wrapped in plastic, like $24 a pound for prime ribeye (must be why the had 2 steaks in the display)...and a walk through the aisles clearly showed that the staples were priced above (significantly??) typical grocery store prices...when reviewers compare you to Central Market as HIGHER...well...that's a little on the silly side....BUT...the reviews for the hot counter at lunch were all glowing and required the second visit... So, 2 days later for lunch came by for food to go, meatloaf, mashers, and one other item...and WOW was I underwhelmed! Food tasted old (it was like 12:30 when I am in), brown gravy in serving area had thick congealed coat on it which had to be stirred in before putting on my mashers, and frankly being a bit of a cook the meatloaf was WAY over worked...way to dense and flavorless. Giving me a 1 LB serving of meatloaf does not cover for poor quality... Ate about 1/3 of serving and the rest went in the trash...not even leftover worthy. I will say the catfish that was put in the display while waiting for my food looked spot on...but hey, I ordered meatloaf. I get the whole idea of a neighborhood grocery, old school and cool...but if they are going to garner a 5 star on YELP and draw me in, I would hope it would be earned...and frankly, it was not even close...will not be back.

Yelp
Deli counter is the most fun to eat at for lunch. Hot plates and hamburgers and old school deli sandwiches of days gone by. Can't beat the lunch price $7.99 for entree two sides + bread. Chopped steak and gravy, roasted baked and fried chicken, meatloaf, chicken and brown gravy, sides of navy beans and ham hocks, hot corn medley, green beans, thin sliced potatoes + onions, yams, dirty rice, potato salad, broccoli salad, etc etc. Italian hoagie is made to perfection. Beautiful women behind counter joked the dude was a perfectionist making the sandwhich and yes she was right. These people can cook. Try the pineapple delight dessert. Just don't buy it out if be pissed if it wasn't any left. Adorable tables to eat at outside. And they are going to add indoor seating coming up. Quaint charming grocery store. Many locals bebop in buying up the steaks to grill In their nearby backyards. 70 years this place has some history. Neighborhood staying power. Pope worthy indeed. He'd love it
google avatar

An N.

Yelp
I came here for their lunch special where you can get one entree and two sides for $7.99. It's a pretty good deal and you get a considerable amount of food. I had the meatloaf with mash potatoes and corn. The food is pretty standard with nothing special to make it stand out from other food places. It's a good place to get food if you are looking for something quick. The staff is very friendly and helpful if you have any questions. Honestly, what keeps me coming back is their lunch special which is cheap and quick.
google avatar

Katlyn D.

Yelp
They have a little area where you can get sandwiches! Little old grocery store. You can stop here and run in for. Quick few things and not have to deal with Walmart crowd !

linda f.

Yelp
We go here at least 2x a week. Best coffee in all of Fort Worth weirdly enough. By far the best blueberry muffin, my son asks for it every day and we have tried ALOT of blueberry muffins in our day (his fav treat). If you haven't been here you need to go!!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Supermarket itself has a cozy, quaint feel, and is a perfect reminder to support local when possible. The burgers are hit-or-miss, though. Steak fries we had were slightly frozen, one of the burger orders came out wrong, and worst of all, both Kobe patties were defiled to point of being past well-done. Make sure you watch your order like a hawk!

Yelp
Today (two days before Christmas) I contemplated going to Central Market to pick up the last of the items on my list for Christmas dinner. As I drove down Camp Bowie, I began dreading the madhouse that I knew Central Market would be. I decided to take a left instead of a right and go to Roy Pope. They had everything I needed plus some tempting items I couldn't resist. I've been going here for over 40 years, and always am amazed at the selection in such a relatively small store, and the amazing customer service. There aren't 20 varieties of pasta, as there would be at Central Market. But the varieties they do have are the very best. Their produce is fresh and locally grown. The lunches (entree, two sides) are great. I don't know what they do to their green beans, but they are the best I've ever tasted I was one of maybe six customers in the store, and it was relaxing, calm, and friendly. All the employees go out of their way to be friendly and helpful, although not at all intrusive. I struck up a conversation with another customer as we were contemplating which butter to buy. She suggested a Texas brand, which has been making butter for over 100 years. I followed her advice and it truly is one of the best I've ever tasted. As usual, my groceries were taken out to my car and carefully loaded. The cashier was friendly and welcoming. It's just such a pleasant experience, and part of Fort Worth's history.

Yelp
Good place ribs so tender. Service exceeds excellent. Selection of the meats and deli great I found rare pickles and spices to boot will be back

Yelp
Roy Pope Grocery & Market is an original. Probably the best BLT in town and the unique items in the grocery store make it a favorite for specialty item shopping. So glad they are part of our neighborhood. Forgot to mention they are the oldest family grocer in FTW.
google avatar

Cian D.

Yelp
Best cheese burger I've ever had. Their chicken salad is really good too. Cute little neighborhood market.
google avatar

Juliann P.

Yelp
Great local neighborhood market. Excellent service and an impressive selection for it's size. I don't do all my grocery shopping here, but this is where I go if I just need a few things on my way home from work. This place has been around since 1943 and I'm proud to support this locally owned market. That being said, it is a bit pricey. Air chilled, skinned chicken breasts were 7.49$ today. They were excellent, but on par with Central Market and almost twice as much. Laundry detergent is about 40% more than Tom Thumb. They don't carry wild game anymore which is a bummer. They said with so many locals hunting games themselves, stock just sat in the freezer. They have frozen buffalo ribeyes and are trying to get ground buffalo from some new suppliers. I do enjoy shopping here as they offer many Texas brands, local produce, and have an impressive meat department. When I am tired after work it is a pleasure shopping here; short walk to the door, no lines, no screaming kids, and help to your car with your purchases.
google avatar

Rick D.

Yelp
Fantastic butcher with what has to be the best beef in Fort Worth. The market and deli packs a lot of punch into such a small space, and of course the selection and service are optimal. It's a great place to get the makings for a special meal. Don't miss the T-bone, and if you're ever going to cook a tenderloin this is your place. They trimmed the silverskin from ours so we wouldn't be charged for that portion. I hesitated in holding back the 5th star but that's only for pricing, which is basically necessary for a locally owned place. I think it's worth it. Treat yourself.
google avatar

Carson S.

Yelp
I've been in here a few times and like having a local grocer and butcher in the neighborhood. On my most recent visit, I walked the aisles and some of their prices are at a premium but you pay for the convenience of having a local store and they also do have some items I have not seen at other stores which is great. However the best part is the deli/butcher. I follow them on Facebook and saw they smoke sausage and ribs on Friday and Saturday. On this particular morning they had Jalapeno Cheddar sausage for breakfast so I stopped in and got some and holy crap they were delicious!! Sausage ran $7.99/lb and was way worth it! I bought two and took them home and cooked some eggs with them and it was fantastic!!! Some of their other meats are prices pretty high. I felt higher than other places but I'm sure the quality is great. The staff was very friendly and willing to help with any questions I had. Great customer service!

Yelp
Great selection of fine meats, produce and specialty. My go to for something special. Staff is very knowledgeable. Avoid the crowds and hype - shop at Roy Pope.
google avatar

Matt M.

Yelp
Roy Pope is a great neighborhood store that has been around for a long time. I like to go there for the unique selection of meats, and good produce. No reason not to go there when it's close by, good prices, and great quality.
google avatar

Billy S.

Yelp
I'm an African American military personnel and I went to this market to purchase some items and they treated me like I was from out of the state and I live in Arlington and fort Worth is not considered out of town. I'm never going to go back to this store and I'm filling a complaint against this store. Hope the owners can see this post...Very unprofessional environment
google avatar

Austin J.

Yelp
Absolutely the best place to buy your meat in Fort Worth. They have Niman ranch steaks that are top quality. The ribs on Fri & Sat are the best ribs in town as well. Friendly staff and family owned, a great place to support.
google avatar

Vicki N.

Yelp
Roy Pope's is a neighborhood grocery & market more like the ones those of who grew up in the 60's and earlier might remember. NOTHING like the divey "convenience" stores you see everywhere these days, Roy Pope's has a fresh meat counter, and they also cook up whole meals that you can pick up by the plate or side, ready to warm up; they will also cook up special orders as for catered affairs, and in fact, offer catering services, too. In addition, they offer a line of Roy Pope branded items, such as pickles, relishes, and a variety of dressings and sauces. You see the same people working there every time you go in, too, and they always seem genuinely glad to see you, a real, friendly, family neighborhood grocery store.
