Bay Ho Brewery Launches Permanent Kitchen With ‘Farm-to-Trailer’ Burgers - Eater San Diego

"Rapp, who previously cooked at San Francisco’s Michelin-starred Spruce and Ad Hoc in Napa, arrived in San Diego after a two-year hiatus from restaurants in which he worked on a local sport fishing boat. Through his fishing connections, the chef took over the bay view cafe at Quivira Basin’s Seaforth Marina in 2019, building Royal Rooster into a bustling spot where he makes sausages for breakfast sandwiches and hot sauce for his popular tacos. Telling Eater that he loves opening restaurants in unlikely locations, Rapp will run his latest kitchen out of a trailer parked behind Bitter Brothers. Calling it a “farm-to-trailer” operation, he’s planning on sourcing all the produce on his menu from the nearby Fruit Stand, which opened on Morena over 20 years ago. He’ll do a classic burger on a brioche bun made with a house-ground brisket and chuck blend and a grilled fish sandwich with green goddess aioli using fresh, sustainable local catch as well as sandwich specials that could feature porchetta or pollo al mattone, chicken cooked under a brick. Sides will range from a market salad to onion rings, grilled zucchini, and fried pickles." - Candice Woo

Google
This place will KNOCK your socks off!! The service is exceptional and the food was outstanding! It is located next to the water and about Harbor and so the view is just stunning. We ate out on the patio and the tables have umbrellas, so it was extremely comfortable! We got the chips and salsa, guacamole, the fish tacos, and the California burrito with all the varieties of meat! I would HIGHLY recommend this place!!

Google
This place is amazing. Been coming here for breakfast for the past few months and one thing for sure is that the food is consistently on point. Eggs cooked to perfection, I’ve had the two breakfast burritos and the breakfast sandwich, always perfectly portioned and the quality of meat and ingredients is evident. I heard the owner is a real chef and perhaps that’s why the food has a restaurant quality to it? Regardless, the staff has always been and is friendly and the view is amazing. Buddy if mine comes here for Taco Tuesday and he said it’s fantastic. Going to make it here one of these evenings.

Google
Update April 2022: Sad to say but after giving Royal rooster 5 stars originally I have to edit my rating. They have completely overhauled their menu. Going from baja cuisine (tacos and burritos) to now just 3 meats and buns 🤔 - chicken sandwich, fish sandwich or beef burger. And a few side dishes like fries, onion rings, crab cakes and crackers and dip. Gone are the delicious smoked meats, fried shrimp and fish tacos. I ordered a burger and chicken sandwich. Burger was just ok and the chicken sandwich wasn't good at all - all it was is tiny piece of chicken on a large greasy bun with tons of spinach and sweet bacon jam. If I want a chicken sandwich Dave's hot chicken can't be beat. As a long time loyal regular, sadly I will not be headed back until they bring back those tasty tacos! If it was too much to keep up with they should have reduced the taco options to just a few best sellers. Sorry to say but a legendary taco place in the making has come to an end. If you tried them then you know and if you didn't you missed out. The food went from stellar to now what you expect to find in the harbor. Such a bummer! Old review: Probably the best tacos in all of San Diego. These are not your average tacos, they are fairly large and packed with fresh slaw and pickled onions. Carnitas and barbacoa are both smoked on site and are delicious. My favorite is the baja fried shrimp. Their california burrito is also really good. The venue is unbeatable. Views of the harbor are amazing and certainly make the experience even better. This is San Diego's best kept secret!

Google
Reflecting on the most excellent experience I’ve had eating tacos. They deserve max stars, whether it’s 5, 10, or 100/100. Great service, very impressionable behind the counter. Reminded me of several friends I have. Which leads me to the food itself, best tacos I’ve ever had. The tri tip was tender, the creamy zing of the sauce was other worldly. Had to go back for every flavor. Barbacoa, chicken, another tri tip. They were all amazing. Fantastic job to the kitchen staff and whoever builds the menu. Paired it with the house hazy ipa. Smoooth and refreshing. Maybe I was the perfect amount of hungry to think the way I do about this food but it’ll forever go down as the best tacos I’ve had. I’ll be back whenever I’m in the area and available.

Google
Omg! It is good Tacos are a bit pricey But worth it We had 2 fish tacos - fresh cod generous and well prepared 1 barbacoa, so much love in that brisket, best I’ve had 1 cauliflower taco which was great will do again Could do 1 taco each But you only live once

Google
Royal Rooster is a Mexican food place on the docks. They have a large menu, lots of options, great prices with good portions and delicious flavor. Food comes out fresh and they have lots of parking in the front with a few tables in the back outside. The staff is really nice and sometimes there is live music outside. Would highly recommend if you're passing between Pacific Beach and Ocean Beach.

Justine Lee

Google
Overall a mixed impression. 👍 Positive Aspects: The patio with its chilled outdoor seating and umbrellas created a delightful atmosphere. The fish taco exceeded expectations with its crispy and flavorful fish filet, leaving a lasting impression. 🙅 Disappointments: Unfortunately, the tri-tip taco fell short as it was overly sour! Also the prices for the food were a bit on the higher side.

Google
The ONLY thing better than their location is the food and the service. Quality 100% on both. Happy to have found this place. Unique eats with amazing flavors. Nothing to change at all. Even stuff for the kiddos. The kids grilled cheese was perfect. Will be my go to spot when I'm the area.

Yelp
im not sure if you want to here this or are ready for it.... ... best smash burger in san diego, hands down. you win.

Yelp
Another amazing breakfast at Charli's. After our first trip we had to come back and try it out again. Their breakfast sandwich and breakfast burger are amazing. The sausage tasted like it had rosemary today, it was flavorful and savory. The crunch from the hash brown just adds something extra. The breakfast burger is melty and gooey with the cheese, sauce, and sautéed onions. Love they top it off with their homemade pickles. Onions rings were crispy and fries were perfectly salted. Will probably stop by again before we leave, don't change a thing Charli's.

Yelp
I can't, for the life of me, understand the strong reviews for this spot. Menu is extremely limited and really disappointing. From thecname, I expected a spot with fresh, locally caught fish dishes, but it's just kind of a basic fast food spot. Many drink choices. They were nice, but the food just wasn't great. We got a Burger and Fish Tacos. Burger was fine, tacos were bland, and all was overly salty. Generous 3 stars, but I wouldn't return.
google avatar

Yelp
Located at Seaforth landing, this was formerly the royal rooster . A good place to grab a bite after checking in for a fishing or whale watching trip out of Seaforth. Also good drinks are available here. Nothing beats a cold beer and burrito before you go fishing, imo. Solid food, reasonable prices. Their micheladas are very tasty.

Yelp
My friend took us here after a day of boating Around Mission bay. I ordered the fish and chips as well as my husband. We didn't realize it was going to come in one huge piece of fish! Which we were very happily surprised with! It was very filling and definitely felt fresh quality from the water. This is a great, cute local to the marina vibe fish shop!
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Easy ordering, outdoor seating with a view of the marina in the perfect San Diego weather - what more could you ask for? The person who took our order was friendly and efficient. Food was good. We had fish and chips. The piece of fish was enormous! 2 of us could easily have split the order. Fries were great. Would recommend if in the area!

Yelp
I recently visited Charlie's Landing while waiting for a well watching tour to start and had the chicken burrito. It was pretty good--great flavor and satisfying portion. The chicken was tender, and the overall taste was balanced, making for a solid choice. The chips were fresh and crispy, and the salsa that came with them was flavorful. However, I was expecting a bit more heat. It had a nice taste, but it was lacking that spicy kick that I usually enjoy with my salsa. Overall, it was a great meal and I'd recommend giving it a try for the chicken burrito and the great ambiance! The service was pretty good too.

Melissa T.

Yelp
Love the while menu! I call ahead often to grab and go to the boat. They are always very friendly, fast, and the food is always on point.
google avatar

Mark C.

Yelp
Nice lunch/ breakfast spot right in front of the water. They have shaded covered seating area but also in the sun near the water. Menu is simply but made well. Music is amazing, they play soja, the green, stick figure (Hawaiian music) Love the vibe here.

Yelp
Saw a video recommending this place. I'm picky about breakfast being good and reasonably priced. This place is very unassuming, but delivered big time on breakfast. The breakfast sandwich with a whole hash brown in it is so good! I got mine with sausage and it was so homey but elevated on the bun. I added cholula to mine for a little kick. We also got the avocado toast which was more of an open faced sandwich. It was so loaded up you had to use a fork and knife. The balsamic, pickled onion and bacon were delicious. They have coffee, teas, to-go lunch and sides and you can eat outside on their patio enjoying the calm bay and boats. They'll call when your order is ready, but we came about 9:30am on a Sunday and it was not busy- the server came out and delivered the food! Highly recommend- very easy and chill San Diego morning.

Yelp
Amazing food!! A must try, fish tacos and fish & chips were huge and bomb! This place is a hidden gem on the marina - go scope it!
google avatar

Adam T.

Yelp
This was a hidden gem. We walked here from the Hyatt and wanted to do a simple dinner close by. My wife got the smash burger and I got the fish and chips and they were both amazing. Can't wait to come back!

Yelp
When I say this is one my of most memorable (and possibly the best ever) breakfast sandwich I've ever had, I mean it. This place is living rent free in my head for life. Truly. Don't be fooled by the simple menu and serve ware. The breakfast here is absolutely amazing. I had the breakfast sandwich, my husband had a breakfast burrito, and my son had a smash burger and everything came out hot, fresh, and absolutely impeccable. I don't know what's in the sauce they use, but it truly makes each dish extra delicious. The restaurant itself is super simple with outdoor seating along the dock. They also serve lunch/dinner and this place definitely parties with the offer of a fireball bucket. I'm definitely too old for that now but my younger self would absolutely love to just sit at the dock with one of those and a piping hot smash burger - with friends of course. It's super close to SeaWorld, so if you're an earlier riser (SeaWorld doesn't open until 10) stop by for breakfast before heading in! We had our breakfast, got an excellent parking spot, and were able to walk on for a few of SeaWorlds best rides. The service was also excellent - very friendly staff, and prompt service. For some reason, it really felt like everyone in San Diego hated their jobs lol. The staff here were the first friendly service staff we had seen in San Diego while on our trip. Don't sleep on this place!

Yelp
Walking along the marina, we were getting hungry. The place was cacant last tine we came, so im not sure how long theyve been open. No inside seating available, but they had umbrellas at some tables. We enjoyed the shade on a warm afternoon. Bathrooms were clean which is unusual if they are public bathrooms. I'm not sure if they are for the restaurant only. I think I'd call it American food, although my hubby had the fried shrimp burrito. I'm not gonna lie, it didn't sound great but it was actually very tasty. Totally would order that again. I had the smash burger and onion rings. The burger was good but the onion rings were great! Service was good, our food was ready pretty quickly. Great place to people or bird watch.
google avatar

Maghen T.

Yelp
Portion was plentiful but so sloppy. Breakfast sandwich was cheesy and eggs fluffy, and who doesn't love crispy tator tots. Outdoor dining area was a great place to appreciate the San Diego marina. Service solid.
google avatar

Julian R.

Yelp
Got the pollo asado burrito and wife got the smash burger. Best burrito I've had in San Diego, hands down. Grabbed a beer and watched the sunset - food came Out in less then 10 minutes. Great service View overlooking the boats and the sunset - perfect

Yelp
This place is truly a hidden gem! I was shopping at Seaforth Sportfishing next door for some last minute fishing gear before heading on a boat rental. Since we were going to be out on the water for a couple hours I thought it would be a good idea to grab something to-go since it was already close to noon. That was the best decision I've made in a long time because I think I just discovered the best fish tacos in San Diego. This taco beats all the Mexican shops I have gone to. The biggest difference I can tell is the way they fry their fish. At all the other shops, I can really taste the oil on the fish but this one isn't oily at all. Something about this fish taco is extremely fresh. The ratio of the toppings were just right and the flavors were just excellent! They have an outdoor patio with a great view of the boat docks and plenty of seating. This seems like a newly opened establishment as everything seemed new and clean. I really really want to come back here and try their other menu items. Their menu looks small but like the other review said, everything is quality. I can't recommend this place enough!
google avatar

Rick I.

Yelp
Great food. Good vibe. The best burger on the planet. I have spread the word amongst my friends. The best onion rings also

Yelp
Charli's Landing is the replacement business for another fast-casual waterfront eatery that had operated out of Seaforth Marina in Mission Beach. One of the first things that struck me was the pleasant attitude of the employees which was a stark contrast to its predecessor. You order at the service counter inside the suite and then if you wanted to dine on-site, there were several tables under a covered outdoor deck. The menu was fairly basic but suited the needs of those who wanted to spend a day on or near the water. There were five breakfast choices, nine lunch/dinner options, and four items on the kids menu. I showed up just before the start of the lunch hour and asked if I could order the Grilled Fish Tacos. The kitchen accommodated my request even though it was still late breakfast time which I appreciated. Two flour tortillas were each stuffed with a whitefish fillet, slaw, baja sauce, pico de gallo, and cotija cheese. A side of tortilla chips and green salsa came with the order. These grilled fish tacos were the largest I have eaten in a while, and the serving size justified the $15 price. I consumed one of the juicy tacos on the spot and then saved the other for later. I rated my takeout experience at Charli's Landing with 4.5 stars.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
This place is an absolute yes. The staff is so nice and welcoming. The food is delicious. My husband got a smash burger and absolutely loved it- so delicious and juicy and the fries were perfect. I got the grilled fish tacos. They were so flavorful- adding the red salsa definitely took it up a notch. Kids split a burger and they both ate every bite, we probably could've done one each. The ambiance is fun because it seems to be a popular spot with the incoming fishermen. We got there at 6 when a bunch were coming in and we got to see all they caught. The seating is outdoors and some people were smoking cigars but thankfully the smoke was blowing the other way. We would come back, it was an enjoyable meal.
google avatar

Kevin E.

Yelp
Service is always great. Fish and chips excellent!!! Beer is always cold. Burritos are excellent
google avatar

Thomas W.

Yelp
Never would've thought one of the best fried chicken sandwiches I have ever had would come from this spot just before whale watching.
google avatar

Sean Z.

Yelp
It was next door to Legacy whale watching cruise. Charli's Landing offers varieties of food such as burger, tacos, etc. I have only tried their burger. I would say the burger was very good. There is plenty of meat and tasty Americam cheese in between. The bun was tasty as well. Between the buns and the burgers were decked with thin slices of pickles, and they were not too salty. The fries were sprinkled with sea salt. They were alright. The service was fine, and the food was served within timely manners. It is considered a 100% self-serve fast food; if you are trying to justify why you should not tip. They offer plenty of alcohol and non alcoholic beverages; more than food. I would recommend not to consume any alcohol before the boat ride, unless you want to share your burgers with the sea habitants. Overall. It's a 4.1 out of 5. Not great, but good.
google avatar

Maria G.

Yelp
We were looking for a casual restaurant with a view and this place definitely fit that description. There is only outdoor seating so on a nice day, this would be a nice place to sit in the patio area and enjoy the view of Mission Bay and the food here. We came here for dinner and got the fish tacos, Caesar salad with shrimp, and a chicken burrito. The food tasted good but it's heavier than what I am used to. I shared the salad and fish tacos with my mom and as I am writing this review the next morning, I am still full. My husband enjoyed his chicken burrito but complained he was stuffed the whole night. The portion sizes looked average so I do think it's the sauce or something that made the food heavy. Service was good though the food took a little longer than expected. The prices are very reasonable.
google avatar

Alana Z.

Yelp
This place was such a great spot to go on a Saturday morning! We took our dog with us and sat outside at the tables. It was fast service and nice people! Great view of the water. Right next to the whale watching tours. The breakfast sandwich was incredible. It literally melted in our mouths. It came with egg, meat, sauce, and a crispy hash brown inside the brioche bun. One of the best breakfast sandwiches of all time. Easy to eat here and then go for a little scenic walk after

Karen W.

Yelp
Sort of a hiddenish casual place with incredible view over the water and boats. Service is friendly and the food is better than good. It's not fancy-think burger shack minus the shack part...Eating fish and chips or a burger on the patio here feels like vacation.
google avatar

Angela F.

Yelp
We have a boat at the marina here and had read an article about the burgers so we popped in. We were immediately greeted and welcomed by the person working the front. Service was fast and the view was perfect. And the burger! It was absolutely delicious. The onion rings were top notch as well. Nice and crispy tempura style batter and you can tell they change the oil regularly. We noticed. We will definitely be back. Five burgers out of five.
google avatar

Sandra A.

Yelp
Charlie's landing is a fun, causal place in Mission Bay which is a lovely short walk from the Dana at Mission Bay motel and the harbor. I met a friend in San Diego and we went here on our first night for an early dinner. The Caesar salad with shrimp was delicious down to the last bite. We both got it! No regrets! They have "mixed beer" specials and you have go to see for yourself! I also popped by alone on my last morning in Mission Bay! They open early! The avocado toast was the best I ever had and I make it good at home, friends! The view, the cool staff, good vibes, and the food cannot be beat.
google avatar

Cee O.

Yelp
We were staying at Paradise point resort and wanted something outside of the vicinity. Found this spot on yelp and seen they had 5 stars. It's up the street from sea world. The staff were very friendly. Prices were pretty good considering how expensive everything is these days. The food though? Delicious!! I had the smash burger with the fries and my husband had the grilled fish tacos. Everything was very fresh and flavorful. There's no inside seating but there was patio seating right infront of the boat docks. It was very peaceful and cute. My husband and I played a couple of rounds of corn hole before our food came out. I definitely recommend trying this place out.
google avatar

Cindy V.

Yelp
Best smash burger, fries, onion rings and fish n chips in the 92109...and that's goes for in n out (formerly my fav burger!) Plus you get to sit and relax overlooking a beautiful and sunny marina. This place is a hidden gem. Plenty of parking and super easy to get to. Remember to be patient! While it's "fast food" they cook homemade to order so everything is fresh and hot and crispy. Grab a beer and enjoy the view with friends while you wait!
google avatar

Kimberly H.

Yelp
The manger needs to fire every single last girl in there. But as someone who also runs a business. I get it. Good help is hard to come. They are just there to be there. You can tell they do not do their job effectively by the constant reminders they were given by other staff. The manager? He was wonderful by the way. Made sure I got my food, 4 people ordered food after I did. They got their food before me. 23 mins later where is my food? I asked I got the it'll be done soon. Okay soon? I asked before I placed my order how long will it take as I have a boat ride in 25 mins. They said 10-15. I said okay more than enough time. Places order. The coffee was water but can't expect much for a $2.50 cent coffee this ain't Starbucks lol! The burritos were so good! I ordered tacos. They charged me for burritos so I got burritos. Whatever I'm just glad they were tasty. I can't ruin the 4.8 star rating because the manager is so on point so giving it 4 stars due to the delicious food and the managers quick ability to problem resolve. I'd come again. I'd just have to probably make sure to be on top of the people to ensure my order is in fact being made. And I'm not waiting while others behind me are getting their food!
google avatar

Amy S.

Yelp
Cute little spot by the water. We spot in on a weekend down in SD. We enjoyed wings and shrimp tacos. Both very delicious. Outdoor seating with some music to set a chill vibe. Staff was courteous and accomodating.
google avatar

Tony S.

Yelp
Food so good. Smash burger with onion rings and a fish burrito. Took them about a half hour to cook the food, which gave me time to enjoy my beer.
google avatar

Scott T.

Yelp
The service was quick and friendly. You order at the counter and can take your food out to the patio and enjoy views of the harbor. The fish as fresh tasting and the smash burger one of the best. Good selection of beer and wine as well!
google avatar

Mia L.

Yelp
I wish they had 10 Stars!! We had an event for 275 Vets after fishing and it worked out great! The food was amazing and all the people that worked our event were top notch. We will most definitely use them next year and possibly for other events, not to mention go for breakfast and lunch on the weekends. Thank you to the owners who were so easy to work with and helped to make the 4th Annual Warrior for Peace Event a huge success!
google avatar

Kristen M.

Yelp
So nice we went twice! I was at a four day conference nearby and looking for a satisfying lunch spot when we found Charli's Landing. Seating is outside (some covered tables) near the marina and you order at the counter or with a QR code. The food, especially the wings, was really good and the guacamole was a happy discovery too! The staff were helpful at checking in on us and were very friendly. Great spot for satisfying food and ocean vibes.
google avatar

Alan T.

Yelp
So flexible. They allowed me to mix and match orders when they weren't busy. Got half fries and half onion rings. I recommend fish and chips over everything else.

Daniela R.

Yelp
A great find! We were staying at the nearby Hyatt and we were pleasantly surprised with how delicious the food was! All the food was super fresh and good proportions. It is truly a hidden gem.

Barbara H.

Yelp
Took a walk along the marina and stopped by for a late lunch. Ordered the grilled fish tacos on flour tortillas. The tacos were the best I have had in a long time. All the ingredients was fresh and the fish was grilled perfectly. Highly recommend for good eats, friendly service and great views.
google avatar

Amber A.

Yelp
Finally a great food place at the marina. My kids love the fries and chicken strips. The smash burgers are my favorite. They make their own pickles that put this burger over the top. The best part is the view and my kids love to checkout the wildlife at the marina. The food has been quick and consistent each time and the staff is very friendly and wants to make sure you are happy. 5 stars for sure!

bailey p.

Yelp
Went there on a Saturday morning and wasn't busy at all. Food was very good! Breakfast sandwich was amazing! Will definitely recommend and be back!

Pete

Yelp
The ambiance combined with the food made the visit so nice. The servers were very friendly to go with the yummy food.

Ry M.

Yelp
The best smash burger with homemade pickles. You can't beat the view of the marina too!

Roni M.

Yelp
My friend and I both had fish and chips. They gave me 1 large piece of fish which covered the whole basket of fries making them soggy; the fish was crispy on the top and the batter was wet on the bottom side; disgusting....funny thing is they gave my friend 3 pieces of fish hers was cut mine wasn't we ordered the same thing...the service was poor waited at least 30 minutes; needless to say I won't be going back
google avatar

Rebecca L.

Yelp
Great food overall but inconsistent, but even when not to order still tasty! Double burger was so good, ordered an extra side of sauce and somehow that was interpreted as no sauce but it was still good! Onion rings and fries were yum! Beer selection is poor and could use some work.
google avatar

Vanessa F.

Yelp
Perfect post beach, boat, anytime spot looking out at the harbor. We bring our dog and enjoy delicious burritos, tacos & a beer outside! Plenty of parking with the marina / street. Hidden gem!

Emerald F.

Yelp
Had never tried the place before so I ordered fish and chips. Ordered online, to go. Fish was so greasy, it needed to drain on several paper towels before I could eat it. Didn't particularly care for the guy who stuffed everything in a very small box. Charli's just wasn't for this old gal.
google avatar

Yoshitaka F.

Yelp
The place has a nice chill atmosphere. The two ladies that were at the counter were very pleasant. Took my order and was very friendly. They made sure that the order was correct. I my order came out fairly quickly and looked and smelled delicious. I ordered the shrimp tacos, grilled. It was pretty tasty. They have a QR code for the menu. There is also a big menu on the wall. Good selection of drinks, craft beers and also wine. Beer on tap. Hope for many more food trips to Charli's landing

Yelp
Juiciest most flavorful burger ever! I downed my burger and tried to steal my mom's afterward. Highly recommend!
