(Attended 11/17/11 TH): A hidden gem located on the UCLA campus that more Angelenos should be aware of.
I had the pleasure of attending Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds debut in Los Angeles, and UCLA Royce Hall proved to be a near-perfect venue for this co-founder of now defunct British rock band, Oasis. Near-perfect because I feel he could have filled a larger venue, although he did play two shows here.
Royce Hall is beautifully situated on the campus of UCLA. While waiting outside on this Thursday glorious evening, a burning sunset blazed itself across the horizon as it began to lay itself down for the night. The facility looks rather large from the outside, but once inside it's an entirely different story.
I ate beforehand, as I wasn't sure if there are any food places close by. Next time I'm here, I'll make sure to check that out.
After walking up the front steps, you enter the foyer/lobby area, which in this case housed the souvenir table, two makeshift bars, and local radio station KROQ-106.7 sponsor table handing out promotional items.
Once the seating area opened up and we filtered in to find out seats, my first impression was "intimate." I believe Royce Hall fits less than 2,000 people and has both a Mezzanine (where I sat) and the Orchestra. I've been here many many years ago for a dance performance and orchestra play, but never for a rock show.
My seat in the Mezzanine was perfect! Dead center and the seats are stadium seating, meaning each row of seats were on separate levels so unless you have the Jolly Green Giant sitting in front of you, your view was unobstructed. From the looks of things, there really didn't seem to be a bad seat in the house. Once the show started, the sound was amazing! You were able to hear each instrument and the vocals were clear. I feel Noel Gallagher is a musical genius and anything he does is pure magic, so I may be biased, but I think the venue simply lends itself for shows (regardless of what they are) to be great.
The service was fine, I guess. The ushers knew where my seat was, so that's all I really care about.
Parking is ample as there is a structure nearby for $11.00 cash; although it looked like they may accept credit cards but I didn't bother to ask. Otherwise, you may be able to find parking on some side streets off-campus, but I'm not exactly sure, so I bit the bullet. Hopefully, my $11.00 goes towards the school.
Overall, I love this venue and I don't know why more bands don't play here simply for the intimate feel. Noel has some lovely songs that play great acoustically (such as Talk Tonight, Wonderwall, among others played this night). I look forward to seeing one of my favorite bands play this place for a stripped-down set (Morrissey, Travis, Blur would be on wish list). The drive is a bit of a pain coming from the San Fernando Valley, but I took Beverly Glen instead of the freeway thinking I would avoid traffic...which I think I did. UCLA should be proud for this facility, and I hope they know what they have, so keep it looking good. Unfortunately, they didn't accept my credit card of choice...AMEX!
