Where To Eat And Drink In Southie - Boston - The Infatuation

"Roza Lyons on East Broadway has the feel of an Irish pub, with regulars crowding into a homey space to drink first and snack on bar food second. But it replaces the shamrocks and IRA murals for hanging plants, strings of Christmas lights, and an indoor trellis that makes the place look like a bar you’d consider building in your basement for a few minutes before remembering that you’d have nowhere else to store the gym equipment that you’re definitely going to start using again someday. There’s nothing special about the menu, which covers everything from buffalo chicken empanadas to fettuccine bolognese, but it’s a great place to grab drinks with friends for a few hours." - dan secatore

Boston’s Best New Restaurants Of 2019

"Yes, we know that Bar Lyon opened in September 2018. And yes, we understand the concept of linear time. But since we didn’t exist when this French bistro in the South End opened its doors, we figured it was only right to include our favorite new restaurant of late 2018 here. This place is so good that the best burger in Boston, almost gets lost among all of the other rich, delicious food. If you’ve been looking for a little French bistro in your life, a place to keep coming back to until the staff knows your name and starts pouring your go-to white as soon as you walk in, make it Bar Lyon." - dan secatore

Roza Lyons - Review - South Boston - Boston - The Infatuation

"Roza Lyons is a nice little neighborhood pub on East Broadway in Southie. It’s the type of place that has enough regulars to merit a wall of pictures by the bathroom of people wearing Roza Lyons t-shirts on the Great Wall of China. They’re very proud of their self-described farm-to-table menu, but it’s really just a standard bar food place, so come here to drink first and to eat second." - Dan Secatore

Google
Excellent food and service at this local Southie establishment. The vibe is cheerful and Brett the bartender was very kind. I felt welcome as a newbie to Boston. The Summer Salmon was fantastic!! I don’t understand some these reviews on here but maybe they didn’t order correctly. Best welcome so far to Boston. :-)

Google
I’m relatively new to the neighborhood, and I’ve only visited a couple of times so far. But I felt welcomed and taken care of each time. Not to mention their great food. My friend had guinness - he said it was the most perfectly poured pints he’s ever had haha. The dessert was yummy and well presented. You know the type of place, you can go again and again, and everything is consistently good - the food, drink, service, atmosphere, and you leave feeling that you had a great time. I have a feeling that Roza Lyons will soon be my top favorite. I heart this place so much already!

Google
The food was ok. The ABLT, Veggie quesadilla, and tater tots were ordered. The ABLT had a nice flavor and sauce to it however only came with 2 slices of bacon cut in half, so definitely needed more bacon. The veggie quesadilla was bland and disappointing. The tater tots were the best on the menu that we had. The dessert was nothing special, a brownie and cheesecake on a decorated plate. Service was good and the outdoor sitting area made up for the bland tasting food.

Google
The empanadas from the shared menu are delicious. My husband and I just wanted to chill and enjoy a beer (or 3) outdoors and this place was the perfect choice. Great service too! definitely going back with friends.

Google
A very nice place for food and drinks. Friendly service and delicious food. The steak salad was so good! The outdoor space is really nice with a lot of plants and flowers. Highly recommended.

Google
Incredible spot- great service, great drinks, frozè is spot on, a legit Guinness. Nice food menu. Outdoor seating. Always a great time. Appreciate it!

Google
Great food (Reuben and tots & Italian ABLT and tots). Even better atmosphere and crowd. I would highly recommend, if you are touring South Boston. This is a small tavern like atmosphere, not the trendy type places ( that I do not prefer).

Google
Absolutely excellent! The service was wonderful, the food was delicious, and the price for almost everything was sub $20 which surprised me considering it's the same quality food as center Boston where you usually pay $20-$30 for the same kind of food. I highly recommend Roza Lyons!

Yelp
Spacious outdoor patio but not the best scenery with lovely East Broadway in the background. Steak & avocado salad was a solid delicious big portion meal. Steak was cooked perfectly medium rare! Would come back for steak. Tried the Hawaiian bowl, but surprisingly comes with long grain rice instead of short grain rice. Not a huge fan. Bonus - side of tots for only $4!

Yelp
We got a table right away! In South Boston, hard to get anything right away because it is so populated. We got here right at 3:00 so they were still serving Brunch on this Saturday. I opted for the breakfast burrito which comes with home fries or tater tots and a nice fruit salad. My honey got the Roza Lyons brunch quesadilla. Filled with blackened chicken, scrambled eggs, bacon & different cheeses. He got the home fries which were nicely seasoned and covered with grilled onions and peppers. He loved them! This is a cozy, nicely decorated Southie favorite. It is on Broadway, one of the main streets here. The windows open to a beautifully decorated area of outside seating. The staff are great. Everyone is on point. There is a Walgreen's directly across the street where you can possibly park but it does say for Walgreens customers, all others will be towed. We parked there with no problem. Easily accessible by the T. Another one of my must try. You will not be disappointed.

Yelp
There's something to be said for vibes. These alone were enough to propel Roza Lyons into 5-star territory. That and the fact that they aren't afraid to use basic seasoning (looking at you, On Deck). Unfortunately, I didn't come hungry. So I only had enough space in my stomach for the Rattlers. These were great! The chicken was cooked and seasoned perfectly and was the true star of the show. The supporting acts of cheese and sun-dried tomato tortilla did not get lost along the way. In a word, everything was balanced! Only the tiny (and undressed) side salad seems like an afterthought. I'd also like to take a moment to point out the sauces. The habanero ranch was pleasant, though alas, my heat tolerance to make an impact. The hot sauce, though... let me tell you: this stuff is HOT! Solid flavor and real heat! Proceed with caution. The Cool as a Paloma cocktail was terrific! It hit all the right notes from the recipe. There were flavors of cucumber, a little sweetness from the grapefruit, and some spice from the jalapeño. Overall, it was refreshing and strong despite not tasting super boozy. Finally, the vibes, as mentioned earlier: This is the kind of place with local regulars where everyone knows each other. Not just by name but about their lives and families. Even as a first-timer, I felt welcome as well! People aside, the location itself is clean and welcoming. While I may not be a local (at least not yet), I may, at some point become one of the regulars!

Yelp
Great spot to sit outside & grab some good American food. The street tray nachos give you so much for the price & will give you more sides of guac, salsa, and sour scream for free if needed

serafino R.

Yelp
Three of us arrived at 5:15. We were told that we had to order our food and be gone by 6:30. We ordered appetizers, and then ordered the main course.. Every 15 minutes we were reminded that we have to be out by 6:30 because of other reservations! Since the second course arrived late, they moved us to another table, and told us we had only 20 minutes left before we had to be out! We did not stay and packed our food to take out. It was the worst dining experience I ever experience in my entire life, These people are a disgrace! If they the last restaurant in Boston, I would never go back! What disrespect for customers and people who pay hard earned money for a good dining experience.! I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to my worst enemies! Save your money and save your time and go someplace where they respect customers, and don't give them the "bums rush!"

Joselyn V.

Yelp
Delicious food! In. Special the cauliflower pizza. In addition to a good service 100 recommended

Dan C.

Yelp
Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon for a Pats game. Got seated right away despite a good-sized crowd. Great service - cheerful and attentive. Order the Rattlers for an app. Perfect to share. The Philly Cheesesteak with tater tots was terrific. Now, Roza Lyons is a go to on Broadway!

Ryan S.

Yelp
I have little need to try other establishments in Southie. Roza's food is top notch, prices are decent for Boston, new specials every week, drinks are amazing, the ladies and gentlemen that work there are some of the awesomest people in new England! The atmosphere is really laid back and chill, (none of the loud and crazy and wild stuff I've seen outside some of the other bars in the area) definitely a plus to me! The owner's are always sponsoring(or doing something related to) some kind of walk or run supporting a good cause around Boston, those are fun too, or helping raise money for a little league team, or something! I love seeing a business that gives back to it community!

Yelp
Forgot to take pictures.. but really enjoyed Roza Lyons! Stopped in after a day at M Street Beach with a friend. We got the rattlers for an appetizer and they were excellent. Full of chicken and very cheesy/crispy. Came with both a spicy sauce and a ranch type sauce for dipping. The spicy sauce gave a really good kick. They were so good I almost ordered more. Got the Mexican Wrap for dinner. Nice and toasty! Blackened chicken was awesome plus lettuce tomato bacon and guac. Wrap came with baked tater tots that were very crispy. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
Roza is good, with the right expectations. The drinks and food aren't the best in the immediate area, but they have a nice street patio (Covid times at least), nice giant window that opens, and much less crowded than many of the surrounding places. Chicken pot pie had curry in it which was um interesting, but, overall and I'd be back for a casual night out

Bob O.

Yelp
Classic Boston pub. Terrific creative food. Load up on the appetizers and the Deep Eddy Vodka specials!!

Yelp
Love it! Great- food, drinks, and atmosphere. The staff is friendly and efficient. Would highly recommend.

Yelp
This place is fantastic. Great ambience, service, and food. One of my favorite places in town.

Yelp
Topline: Was recommended this place by my Air BnB host and it did not disappoint. Good vibes, perfect spot to catch up with friends, a date, or on hang out by yourself. Great food and service. Ambience: 5/5. Narrow bar area when you walk in that is super crowded around dinner time, even on a weeknight. Seemed like it was a lot of regulars who knew each other. Past the bar the seating area is small and intimate, perfect for a date night. For Mr. Solo Dolos, there are 5-6 TVs all playing different sports channels. Service: 5/5. Colleen was awesome. Super helpful in explaining different options on the menu for foods and drinks. Taste: 5/5. The fettuccine with their house marinara was so good. They have a special frozen watermelon slushy drink that was pretty good, although probably not everyone's cup of tea. Expensiveness: 4/5. $30 for a house drink and an entree. About what I'd expect to spend at a nice restaurant in any major city.

Yelp
Our favorite neighborhood spot. Such friendly staff and awesome food! I love grabbing a seat at the bar!

Yelp
Roza Lyons is decent! I didn't expect the food to be good, but have been here twice - once for lunch and one for a night watching the Pats kick some bootay. Lunch time I got one of their paninis (forgetting the name, but it had apple, gouda, turkey I want to say), which was actually quite good - my only quarrel was there was no option for french fries... just chips... womp womp. The second time we got their queso which was awesome, mainly due to the large chunks of chicken within the dip. Not to spicy, but a nice kick to it. A friend next to me had ordered the nachos which looked UNBELIEVABLE, not one chip left untopped. And the toppings appeared to be a nice array of everything you want on a loaded nacho plate. Overall, fun environment here, especially during a sports game, or just grabbing some drinks and apps with some friends.

Yelp
The food was unique and amazing! Tuna salad and turkey melt wrap/sandwich were great as well as the bruschetta app. Service was good and staff was super friendly! Highly recommend this spot if you are in town. Great spicy Paloma as well. Extremely well balanced with sweet and spice!

Yelp
unfriendly staff member ruined our night. would not recommend for that reason alone

Yelp
Kind of blown away at the menu of a neighborhood bar in Southie. No shade, but there are tons of restaurants around like Lincoln Tavern and the Broadway and I had never heard of Roza Lyons until someone posted a picture next to their heaters on the 'gram. I messaged them and came in soon after. They had one table with a temporary barricade to stop the wind and a huge heat lamp above our table-- that's the table I would recommend if outdoor seating pops up again in Boston. The eggs benedict were great (we asked for regular bacon instead of Canadian), the breakfast pizza was very good, as were the drinks. I have to dock them one star because the inside doesn't seem super conscious of COVID restrictions-- there was a relatively large party near the front door/bar. However, this place has a good vibe during COVID-- a veritable unicorn amidst the pandemic.

Yelp
I've been to the Roza Lyons about 8 times for drinks. Bar staff very friendly and great service. For the first time went there for early dinner. The food was not bad but the service was terrible. The waiter was extremely unfriendly, rude and pushy. This experience would make me think twice about ever going back. Road Lyons is in walking distance from home; but other places with better food and service also nearby. Very disappointed because I brought friends with me and we went in my recommendation!

Pen J.

Yelp
The service was good, but the food was awful. Way too salty and weird flavors. Won't be back.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor. Order the buffalo Mac and cheese. Perfection!!!!! The rattlers and tacos carnitas complete the family meal. Always a hit!

Christine K.

Yelp
Love this place!!! Last night my daughter and I were passing by the restaurant. The hostess was warm, welcoming and very sweet with my daughter. Alan, the bartender, is fabulous! Both Alan & Brian, one of the patron's, at the bar were super kind and generous to my daughter & made a donation to her Girl Scout troop to support first responders. Kindness always wins! Dine local!

Yelp
RL needs to do a little more advertising because this place could easily be overlooked. After 1.5 years of living in Southie, finally gave it a try for brunch. Bar is a little dark but is a great space. TVs surround the walls so you have plenty of viewing options for sports. Bar tender and waitress were very friendly and greeted us right away. Brunch was crazy good. $10 for each meal which is affordable and worth every cent. Kelsey and I could only finish half of our meals because it was so big. Perfect flavor, came out hot, and had fruit salad and home fries as a side. I had the quesadilla with blackened chicken and it was great. Kelsey had the breakfast burrito with eggs, bacon & sausage. It was grilled and easy to eat. I can't believe I've missed out on numerous brunch opportunities here. Will recommend to anyone looking for a brunch spot that doesn't want to deal with crowds, big wait times or numerous teeny boppers in chokers constantly yelling. Delicious, great price, even better service.

Yelp
we have been getting take out from here for months (we live on east 3rd) but haven't had the experience of dining here! we had a HORRIBLE experience at an overpriced, unorganized back bay restaurant. i called roza lyons for a reservation (while still sitting at our current restaurant) and they welcomed us with open arms. their covid standards are impeccable. we sat indoors and they have plexi lining in between each table. the food and drinks are unreal and we should've gone here in the first place!! staff couldn't have been nicer. thanks again! we have loved the takeout during quarantine and had an even better experience in the restaurant. can't wait to order the buffalo mac and cheese again!

Julia R.

Yelp
Great place, nice outdoor seats, really good menu with a lot of options and great stuff

Arleen C.

Yelp
Amazing service, food, and neighborhood institution! The Owners care so much about their clientele/ patrons and you feel part of the family after just one visit! I highly recommend stopping in just once....although it won't be your last!!
google avatar

Alex S.

Yelp
Another great addition to the neighborhood. Nice to have an option that isn't blaring loud music and I can actually have a conversation! The servings were much bigger than I expected! I got two apps ($10 each) and it was almost too much food for one sitting and I took some home! They have a great drink list with a lot of beer options on draft. Will definitely be returning in the near future to try more of the menu! Very attentive waitress and someone who might have been an owner checking in. I appreciate that especially with a new business!
google avatar

Yelp
We were looking for a place to have lunch that was fairly close to our hotel. This place fit the bill. We had the apple & goat cheese salad, tuna tartare, and pretzels. All of them were great!! Good beer & wine list too. Will be back on our next visit.
google avatar

Yelp
Roza Lyons is the Southie version of Cheers. We walked in, grabbed a spot at the bar, and proceeded to become best friends with the two guys on the bar seats next to us. Great lively and friendly atmosphere, and most welcoming bar to stop by if you're flying solo for the night, as you're sure to make friends. While the general space and bar area is small, you're sure to find an open table if you're ok not sitting right in front of the bar area. While I don't think people come here for the food, we were pleasantly surprised that they can still serve up a mean sandwich. We came out of sheer curiosity, we'll return for another night of pleasant debauchery with our new friends!
google avatar

Bill R.

Yelp
Great place for wonderful food, great beer selection and service is fantastic. Wonderful local bar that has a great mature bar atmosphere

Annie Z.

Yelp
Came here on a night with a friend! We don't usually come to the area but are glad that night suggest Roza Lyons for brunch. We shared the eggs Benedict and banana/Nutella French toast. Eggs Benedict was really tasty though the eggs were slightly overdone and one did not run. Side potatoes were delicious (way more effort here than usual diner and brunch sides) and came with fruit on the side. The banana Nutella French toast was also delicious and came with syrup on the side. Too sweet for me as a whole dish but glad to try a slice from my friends plate. The feel of the restaurant is very casual and neighborhoods, with some really unique decor that very boston. I agree w the other yelp review that points similarities to Cheers. Overall glad I came here! Kind of far for me to trek from Cambridge but I would come again if in the area.

Yelp
Frequent visitor to this place, great service and good food. Taco carnitas and pretzels a fantastic. Amanda has been our bartender a few times, she's very very personable, knowledgable and (most importantly) makes great cocktails. Very underrated spot for the games, they have TVs everywhere so you'll be able to get a nice view regardless of where you're sitting. Great neighborhood spot. Highly recommended.

Yelp
Wow first time in Boston and our friends brought us to this place and I hav to say it was the best food I've had in years everything is soooo fresh and very farm to table I would highly recommend the quesadillas spinach and artichoke dip, blackened shrimp w penne pasta and guacamole!!!!
google avatar

Matt O.

Yelp
Decent early dinner here on a weeknight a few months ago. I want to give it another chance as I'm looking at the menu and they seem to have made some improvements. We ordered a number of small plates to share on our first visit and a few items seemed like frozen foods that came off the US Foods truck and thrown in the oven. Service was good to begin, but tapered off and forgot about us as the restaurant got busier. I like the concept of what they are trying to do and the neighborhood certainly warrants it, so hopefully they can continue to evolve the menu as I unfortunately didn't get that Farm to Table feeling. Is it possible that Playwright (same owner) is sharing food sourcing and hence some of the subpar quality? I'll give it another chance because I live right here and want this to succeed.
google avatar

Paige N.

Yelp
Wow, I was so excited to hear about a cute new bar with walking distance of my place near the park. Now I'm just disappointed. Came here with friends from the office and we all agreed the only redeeming quality was the somewhat interesting beer list. Food - meh. Mojito - ergh. Service - double ergh. (How does a server not know what Tanqueray is?) Felt like the charcuterie plate came directly from next door (that would be Stop-N-Shop for you non-southie residents). The pretzels were wet (?) on the bottom, no idea why. Definitely won't be going back.
google avatar

Heather K.

Yelp
Stopped by this spot twice already and will probably go again during this vacation! Great Southie bar! The decor is inviting and incredibly well done! The staff is friendly and the patrons are super to hang out with! My friend and I loved the sandwiches we ordered!
google avatar

Joey L.

Yelp
Great place! Atmosphere and design is very inviting. Met both the owners and they immediately shook my hand and welcomed me. Food is fresh and carefully thought out. Solid selection of beer too. I had the Lyons Sandwich with the Siracha mayo. Definitely a place I will be coming back to. I've waiting a long time for a place that utilizes fresh ingredients with solid flavors that I could just pop in for a bite or bring friends to. Check them out!!
google avatar

Ryan S.

Yelp
If I could recommend a bar not to go to at all costs it would be this one. I went recently for the first time with a group of friends to watch the patriots game. We were seated for about an hour, ordered drinks and food, then without warning everyone seated in the back room had to leave because the manager failed to notify the staff that a group party reserved the dining area for the game. On top of that, they overcharged us over $100 on our bill while reviewing my credit card statement and I had to file a claim against them. Get it together Roza Lyons, you will never last in South Boston with that kind of service.
google avatar

Maria C.

Yelp
This place is great. I had the TACO CARNITAS and they were delicious. Can't wait to go back to Boston and try the little gem.

Hannah C.

Yelp
Saw that a new place was opening in Southie and after looking at menu online thought it would be a really cute spot to try. Went in for lunch and was very disappointed. We started off with the watermelon margarita which was overly sweet and tasted like Kool Aid with a slash of tequila. We ordered the charcuterie board and it was basically an unpackaged Lunchable on a cutting board. We also ordered the lettuce wraps that were so soggy we couldn't even lift them off the plate but had to eat with a fork and knife. Not to mention the "chicken" on the lettuce wraps tasted like canned chicken mixed with a pre packaged Asian sauce. AND were topped with pre package Chinese noodles. Not sure how this place advertises as a "Farm to Table" when everything we had tasted pre packaged. I have been to LOTS of restaurants in Boston and this was BY FAR the worst meal I've ever had. Extremely disappointed.

Dylan K.

Yelp
Tommy the bartender is horrible. Gets wasted on the job and is a dick. Terrible service. All over the place, would start to make a drink then just leave it and go take other orders and drink himself. Does not deserve this job.
google avatar

Alison L.

Yelp
I came for dinner last week and it's a nice cozy location in Southie. The service is great and I love the ambiance. I felt that our meals were good, but not amazing. We had the buffalo empanadas and they were honestly a bit dry. We also split one of the turkey sandwiches. It was good, no complaints. I will come back but will try different items on the menu.

Jarrob W.

Yelp
Honey sriracha chicken wings are the balls. Don't sleep on them. Buff chicken dip was also good.

Sean M.

Yelp
The food here is mediocre at best. I was honestly embarrassed for them when they brought out the "charcuterie plate." As others have pointed out, it looks like everything on the plate was purchased next door at the Stop-N-Shop. They either don't know what a proper charcuterie plate is, don't think their customers know what a proper charcuterie plate is, and/or don't care enough to put one together for their customers. The pretzel was bland and completely forgettable. I also had their pork tacos which were inconsistent. 2 out of the 3 tacos had the tortillas grilled slightly to add some crispy texture (which I enjoyed) but was disappointed to find the last tortilla had not been grilled which made for a soggy mess of a taco. My dining companions were far from impressed with their meals. It seems like they put some good thought into the menu but the execution was fairly poor. This place isn't worth going out of your way for if you're looking for good food. However, if you live in the area and are looking to grab a beer after work in a relaxed environment, it may be a good option then.

Kevin S.

Yelp
Awesome establishment, service was great, food was great and great staff! Look out for Grace!

Anna M.

Yelp
Extremely poor customer service, awful management, and even worse bouncers. My friend was called a c**t by one of the bouncers. Unacceptable. Never returning to this place.
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
Loved the vibe of this place and the staff! Made me feel like a friend and bartender made a mean Negroni. I didn't have the chance to eat anything but I'd be back for the neighborhood vibe and good friend

Laura C.

Yelp
I worked in the service industry for years, so I know the difference between good and bad service/management. What's very important to me as a paying customer is how well run an establishment is, in addition to good communication between the staff. So unfortunately, my review is a negative one. I've been to Roza Lyons multiple times before and enjoy the food. However, the last time I was there a large row broke out between some customers who were obviously very intoxicated; punches were thrown. The customers were not asked to leave as one of that bar staff knew them and so I and my friend felt very uncomfortable. We therefore left - the food was still nice but we didnt feel comfortable. This was at about 4pm on a Tuesday. About a week ago from today, I rang Roza Lyons and asked could I reserve a table for 2 for today the 17th March to watch the rugby match- not many places show it so that is why I rang in advance. I was told a party of 20 were coming in at 1 but I could have a table for 2 at 12. I said great, gave her my details. This morning we drove down to South Boston and arrived in to be told that there is no table for us. She also said the party of 20 were coming in before 1. So I was misinformed and originally told I could have a table only to arrive and be told we can't sit down anywhere for food as tables not booked for the party of 20 were taken. The waitress gave me a blank look saying there was nothing she could do. My husband and I stood there waiting for something further from her because it's unacceptable for returning customers to book a table, travel down and be told there is no table. She said after walking by us twice she could go get the manager that he was just in the bar. Yet she came back then telling me he left!! I don't know whether to believe her or think he just didn't want to deal with the issue at hand. Our whole morning and early afternoon was derailed. No where else to eat nearby that was open, and we haven't gotten to watch the rugby match we initially wanted to. Now while this is not a life or death matter, it's a disgraceful way to run a business . Allowing bar fights and taking reservations while not actually following through with them is not really acceptable . It wouldn't be so bad if we lived nearby but we don't, we knew we had the table booked and got up early to go down and eat brunch and enjoy the match. Somehow, I don't think management will even care that they've lost paying customers. We had friends over from Ireland at Christmas, brought them to this pub for an evening. Safe to say we won't ever be bringing more custom their way.
