Google
Great service and a relaxed vibe in historic downtown Charleston. The unique Mexican tacos offered a fresh spin on classics. Service was excellent, with food arriving quickly. Portions were very generous. Parking can be tough, but if you enjoy strolling through a historic waterfront area, you'll love it.

Great little place in the heart of Charleston quarter. The queso and chips are a great starter and I went off-rail and got the quesadilla (there is no crying in baseball) and it was too much for one person to eat! And good. I love the quaint feel of it even though it is downtown and a lot of foot traffic that comes through. Open to families and bar-people alike. Great experience.

Food was tasty | Drinks were great | Service was low to average but then got better… 🌮 🍹 💁🏼‍♀️ Assuming we just came at a weird time, (3pm on a Monday) which we later realized was the end of the day shift that transitioned to the dinner shift so we had multiple bartenders. Upon arrival, the place felt a little unkept as the bar was sticky and no one greeted us for several minutes. I grabbed our menus myself from the host stand. Once the staff came around they were helpful and brought our food and drinks in a timely manner. However, they became preoccupied with large group of what proved to be fellow employees who had the day off and spent it right next to us at the bar. It wasn’t too disruptive or anything but it was noticeable that the attention was focused mostly on this group. We also noticed both staff and people in the employee group vaping at the bar. Is this normal? We live in California and aren’t used to this being an acceptable action in a restaurant. 💨 The night staff arrived at 4pm and this bartender was clearly more energized than the rest so that was nice. My husband and I each used the restrooms and found them both in need of cleaning and supplies as well. 🧻 So… while the Monday day shift was a bit behind on their duties, overall we would still return since the drinks and food were very tasty. Oh, and the menu was fun and engaging because all the food + drink names were related to movie quotes so we had fun guessing the different affiliations there, too. 😊 HAPPY HOUR 4-6pm! Cheers 🍻

Matt is amazing! He's so kind, funny, accommodating and so attentive. We are visiting from Tennessee and this was our first experience here. It was truly an amazing experience and it was wholly due to him. He went above and beyond. We really appreciate the amazing food and we really appreciate Matt!

Google
Absolutely some of the best tacos I’ve ever eaten with a staff that is attentive and bubbly. The bartender was so helpful with what we should order and our waiter was the coolest and helped with direction we needed for our next stop. You MUST get the barria tacos-spicy but so damn good. This is a must stop when you’re craving tacos in Chucktown.

Google
Ru Ru's Tacos & Tequila is a great spot for some authentic Mexican cuisine. The menu features a wide variety of tacos, each with its own unique flavor combination. The portions are generous, and the food is fresh and delicious. The restaurant is also known for its friendly atmosphere and attentive service.

Google
Got the I’ll Have What She’s Having tacos, cooked perfectly, savory and tender. Pineapple and mango salsa was delicious. Also got home wrecker burrito, chipotle sauce was perfect and the helpings were extremely generous. Birria beef may have been a little too dry in the burrito, would be nice if it came with some kind of birria stock to dip in. Also got the chips n queso as a starter chips were fresh and queso was amazing. We asked for a to go box for the starter and they gave us a fresh bag of chips and took away the old ones

Google
Food is kinda bland. We had a mahi taco that was overcooked & another ground beef one that the seasoning was meh. Vodka soda also was very weak to the point I didn't even finish the soda water.

Yelp
A hot and muggy day we decided to stop early for lunch. The place was empty except for 1. Server brought water right away, quality friendly staff. We ordered Frank the Tank margaritas, frozen, which went nicely after our stroll. I noticed the nachos on the way in so we ordered the steak and nachos. Lots of steak and shrimp with plenty of toppings. I did add some hot sauce for extra spice and flavor which it needed a little heat. There was plenty to share and we decided it was enough for us. I wasn't pleased with the smell in the restrooms but I didn't go there for that. Would recommend.

Yelp
RuRus is a constant place that is on my mind. I love showing people it, the fun yet easy going inside is always nice on any day. T he vibes can go either way dressy or casual. ive done both, sweatpants and hoodie on a sunday and dress and heels on a thursday. No wrong answer and no wrong answer on what to order. Im a big burrito person so i always get the Clarence beeks burrito. Devine. devine i say. I always have left overs which is my favorite thing ever. Drink wise keep it simple with a margarita, so many flavors to add to get it frozen or on the rocks either way you cant go wrong. Taco wise, "your going the wrong way" is a top one for me. Parking can be tricky on east bay, best bet is parking lot down the street a little. We never make reservations it usually steady. Shoutout to Alex who works there she is awesome and so easy to talk to.

Yelp
We went in just to have a couple Diet Coke and I wanted a taco. The Diet Coke was the best I've ever had. Lots of syrup and carbonation.. Sounds silly but if you love this stuff it makes a difference. The fried fish taco I had was a joke. I understand that it had cold toppings, but I the fish was ice cold. Admittedly, neither I nor the waitress commented on a plate that looked almost untouched. I won't be back.

Yelp
The best tacos! Great service Awesome atmosphere Highly recommend Ruru's for the win

Yelp
Amazing Mexican restaurant in Charleston, the best part is the service and promptness of the staff. We had a large group of 18 people which is 5 families, amazingly they were able to put us all together in a Private area. Our waitress helped out with the orders as we ordered different checks for each family. She was really composed and attentive Coming to the foo, it was delicious and every item was to crave for. I have ordered the tacos which are reasonably priced "Your going the wrong way" "Why so serious " "Fat guy in a little coat" and "It was the dukes " All of them were delicious, the side dishes and appetizers were also delicious. Make sure you try this place out when you are in the Charleston area.

Yelp
This is a great downtown restaurant is you are looking for some unique tacos with names from different movies. They have a pretty varying menu and their burritos are loaded with flavor and delicious. There is a ton of seating and we have never had to wait long to be served. It was pretty casual and a place you could meet with a larger group.

Kennedie K.

Yelp
My friend and I were visiting for the weekend and popped in after a walking tour that ended around 9. The kitchen was closing 10 minutes after we walked in but they were so kind and took our orders anyways! The frozen margarita was great and we each got two tacos and shared the queso. Whenever I come back to Charleston, I plan on revisiting!

Yelp
We ate there in September. It was recommended by the concierge where we stayed. It was a Mexican restaurant, but then also a bit different. The food was seasoned differently so can't say if this was the portion of Mexico it represented or if this is a Charleston thing. Everyplace we ate served same food as elsewhere but seasoned differently. We enjoyed it and would go back again. The portions were generous for the area. Reading other reviews seems others felt the same. Same dishes but also different not as authentic (based on my experience) as other places. But don't be scared off this place. We really enjoyed the setting and food. We tried a couple of drinks and they were also good, prices just a little below other locations around here. We were there during September but it wasn't crowded we walked right in and there were tables to choose from. The bartender also was our server.

Yelp
RuRu's has an excellent location on East Bay and offers a good vibrant Mexican / TexMex vibe. The staff is down to earth and always pleasant and enjoyable. The menu is compact with fun titles for their menu items. You can get everything from quesadilla to burrito, tacos to queso, nachos to ahi tuna. The food is good, but often lacks enough flavor and spice. It may not be the best Mexican food in the Lowcountry, but it is satisfying with a good vibe and excellent location. We recommend sitting at the spacious bar. It's always nice and relaxing with great views of the entire restaurant and street people watching.
google avatar

Yelp
Basic Mexican! Not the worst but not the best. A little bit of a tourist trap close to the water!
google avatar

Philip G.

Yelp
The waitress was attentive and the menu was fun and full of movie quotes. Clever. The portion sizes were good. Unfortunately, the food itself was definitely a farcry from anything authentic. We should have seen it coming when the music was modern and there was not a Spanish speaker in the vicinity. Definitely tasted American. Not even Tex Mex. Flavor was limited on the burrito and quesadilla. The salsa and chips is an extra charge, which is nothing I've ever seen at any standard Mexican joint. It's good in a pinch, but we won't be back. Basically a sports bar with Mexican leanings.
google avatar

Katie Q.

Yelp
A fun, quick, tasty stop! The menu is amusing, with movie reference names for menu items. The restaurant is a little loud, but since it wasn't too busy when we stopped by, there was no trouble hearing each other or the server. Really tempting cocktail menu and a great variety of tacos, quesadillas, and burritos. I only wish there were more veggie options, but the taco with the tofu was great - I love seeing menus that don't rely on fake meat for vegetarian options.
google avatar

Janelle P.

Yelp
The entire menu is movie quotes, love it! It was hilarious hearing my friend say she wanted a "stage five clinger". I ordered the chicken bowl it was just -okay. The rice was hard and another one of my friends said the same thing, "is your rice hard?" Yes it was. For a restaurant it was odd.. was it old rice from the day before? Stale? Undercooked? Such a weird mistake for a restaurant to make.. considering I had a chicken rice bowl all that I was eating was the rice and chicken so I ended up only eating the chicken. Fast service, though. And a very convenient location!

Yelp
Ready for a change from the typical seafood restaurant in Charleston? Then you have found your spot. The food is delicious with a wide variety of options. Servings are plentiful; you could really share if you don't want leftovers. The restaurant stays pretty busy, but it's large enough to accommodate the crowd. The food came quickly after our order. The servers are nice and friendly without being overbearing. It's in a great location is your are staying in downtown Charleston. A parking garage is nearby as well.

Casey R.

Yelp
Went to rurus looking to get a lowkey send going and get some tacos... when I went to order the blond waiter said to me: "can I get your order brother" I was very mad. Only reason I'm giving this 5 stars is because they gave me a free "double shot of whiskey" and some worker let me play his Nintendo in the bathroom...BOOM

April H.

Yelp
Do yourself a favor and avoid this place at all costs. It was by far one of the worst restaurants I have ever been to. We waited 5-10 minutes just to be greeted during a non busy time, in between lunch and dinner. 3:00 pm during the week. The server had the personality of a stick. Their name has "tacos" in it so we ordered a $6 taco each. I ordered the mahi taco and when it came out, it was a SLIVER of fish and avocado that was hard and COLD, the salsa had zero flavor. It looked pitiful. I sent it back for a buffalo chicken taco. Again meat was cold, food tasted processed, cheese was cold and not melted. I hardly ever leave bad reviews, but I would give this restaurant 0 stars if I could.
google avatar

Yelp
Great service - great drinks. Food is good/fine - what you'd get at most taco places. Really wish the guacamole was fresh- makes such a difference!
google avatar

Kiran V.

Yelp
Visited here for lunch over the weekend. I was pleasantly surprised there was no wait and we were seated right away. The names of the dishes were really fun and silly. We ordered the chips and salsa, veggie burrito, chicken burrito, chicken taco, shrimp taco, and mahi taco. The music they were playing was also really fun and had really nice vibes. All of the staff were extremely friendly and helpful!

Vanessa L.

Yelp
My taco came with a cockroach inside of it (it's on the right of the plate)... the staff wasn't very apologetic or seemed to be phased at all. I even had to ask if it could be taken off the bill because they were still going to charge me for it. Super disappointing since I heard great things about this place!
google avatar

Raven L.

Yelp
Delicious! Also LOVE the names for the food options on the menu. Quick seating in an otherwise very busy area in regards to restaurants. Service was quick, waitress attentive. Queso is delicious- opt for the one with chorizo mixed in- sooooo good.
google avatar

Julie W.

Yelp
Stopped in during happy hour for margaritas. The margaritas were very good. Was happy to see that they were mixed on the spot (agave syrup, lime juice, triple sec) and not from a mix. Got a side of chips and queso. The atmosphere is casual.

Alaina E.

Yelp
The tacos and trio dip is amazing!!! I love their guacamole!!! Great location, attentive staff, decent prices.
google avatar

Samantha L.

Yelp
I visit RuRu's for a mid-afternoon lunch with my family. The service was quick but unfortunately we found the food very disappointing. I got the tofu & veggie rice bowl, they were out of tofu which is fine but none of the veggies were fresh and everything just had a bit of an odd taste. There was a ton of sauce in the bowl (three different kinds) and it just did not taste right - what did have flavor wasn't a very good one and I couldn't eat much of it even though I'm not normally a picky eater. Others in my party got burritos and tacos which they said were "ok". The others thought the sauce on the rice was weird as well and would've been better plain. I hate to leave a bad review but not the meal we were hoping for in Charleston.
google avatar

RM P.

Yelp
Great place to eat at the bar, unique taco selection and GREAT pricing on beers ( which is a rarity in downtown Charleston) Easy place to pop in for a quick taco and beer!
google avatar

Meg C.

Yelp
I love coming here. The service is always quick and the food comes out quickly too. I swear this last time it took all of 30 seconds to come out. Their burritos are huge. I love their nachos and the individual tacos. You can easily mix and match if you can't decide on just one type of taco. The interior is cute and clean and the bar is usually busy. Street parking.

Yelp
Three stars is generous. We spent the afternoon in the park and hubs wanted a margarita so we stopped in and sat at the bar on our way back to our hotel. The bartender was disgruntled and spent the entire hour plus we were there complaining about his job and other customers - both to himself and the other bartender that was there. He was nice enough to us, but it was such a dampener on our visit to be subjected to his mouth and bad attitude the entire time. He also asked us to close out our tab because he was leaving and wanted his tip, which was off putting to say the least. The vibe in there was so bad - hubs literally downed his last cocktail so we could leave. We ordered the steak nachos (Sorry I'm Not a Loser) and hubs got a few margaritas. The nachos were mediocre at best. They came out of the kitchen in like 3 minutes which was troubling. They were barely warm which was also annoying. Cold chips, cold steak, clunky cheese and topped with a ton of cold condiments. I get most of this is prepared already, but idk it was a scary fast amount of time. Nothing was offensive about it yet I have had better nachos at countless other places. Hubs said the margaritas were good - but still couldn't wait to get out of there. Of all the beautiful places to dine in Charleston, it is pretty safe to say we won't be back to visit RuRu's.
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
YUM!!!!! If you like margs and tacos this is the place to be! Very casual with great service. We sat at the bar and were served quickly and efficiently with normal amounts of conversation. The menu is fun and has lots of options as well as drink options. We always try to stop in when we come to Charleston!

Yelp
When I heard about RuRus I was very excited about the idea of having Mexican food on the lower downtown and I really wanted to like it. Unfortunately I left a bit on the disappointed side. We arrived with a group of 4 on a Friday night without reservations. The restaurant was rather empty and there were a lot of tables available but we still had to wait about 15 minutes for someone to notice us and help us get a table while we waited on the host podium. Once we were seated, the menus had a weird smell that I can only associate with a not-so-clean rag which was probably used to clean them. We ordered margaritas , which were nothing phenomenal and on the extra sour side but at least they were strong. We had some chips and salsa to start, which were on the average side and probably not worth the $6 extra charge. My biggest disappointment were the tacos when they came out. As a Mexican, I have a pet peeve of eating tacos on cold tortillas and that was an immediate let down for me. The tortillas were straight out of a bag to your table without being heated or warmed . The fillings of the tacos (steak) were not great and one of them was just covered on a creamy overpowering sauce . I would probably not go back nor recommend it to anyone looking for decent food.
google avatar

Victoria N.

Yelp
This place was across from our hotel, and we had just landed in Charleston, so we needed a quick place to eat before dinner. The tacos were surprisingly delicious. I was not too fond of their cocktails since some were spicer and sweeter than I like. Good table service and food, so I would likely visit the place if I were ever in Charleston again.

Darci K.

Yelp
Worth a quick bite if you have mediocre expectations. Interesting tacos. I have Korean BBQ and pork belly. Flavorful. Margaritas just okay. I had the Cashew kid...the name makes no sense. It's made with reposado tequila so a bit more expensive. I'd come back for happy hour 4 to 6, but probably not again for dinner.

Sara C.

Yelp
The best guacamole we've ever had! Wish there were more locations... this is always a stop when we visit Charleston. I had the salad and it was fantastic, my family loved the quesadillas. Our favorite Mexican restaurant.
google avatar

Lisa C.

Yelp
Fresh made tacos with delicious filling choices. The carnitas were perfectly cooked and tender. Cold beer served from tap by very friendly bartender.

Ian L.

Yelp
I'm a sucker for a place with "fun" tacos, and RuRu's doesn't disappoint. The service is great, the drinks are pretty cheap and the atmosphere is fun and upbeat. I personally find using movie quotes for the title of each dish a little try-hard, but I could see how some people might think it's cute. It's smack in the middle of the cruise ship district, so keep that in mind. But if you're down there and need a beer and some killer nachos, you could do a lot worse.
google avatar

Madi R.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick lunch on a Sunday afternoon. I was seated immediately and had a drink within 5 minutes of my arrival. They were out of ginger beer so they couldn't make the cocktail that I originally ordered but my server suggested the ginger agave seltzer instead which was a great recommendation! I got the vegetarian bowl which was huge and delicious! The tofu was cooked impressively well especially for a Mexican restaurant. I'll definitely be back to try some of their vegetarian tacos soon!
google avatar

Kennedi D.

Yelp
Stopped in here on our first night in Charleston, later in the night! I was worried because some reviews were negative, but we were pleasantly surprised! Portions were generous, chips and queso were hot and fresh, food came out SO quickly. Our waitress was awesome! The atmosphere is really cool. Definitely more American-Mexican but it was delicious.
google avatar

Anna E.

Yelp
Happy hour at RuRus was delightful. Tacos were delicious, and drinks were half off ! The menu has a great variety, with fun names for all of the menu items. Already thinking of the next time I go in and what I'll try then . Soo soo good

Erika B.

Yelp
Everything here was really good! We got the snoop nachos and chicken fajitas. The portions were larger than expected. The restaurant was in a good area, within walking distance to the city market and the Charleston pier.
google avatar

Stacey T.

Yelp
We're here on vacation and landed here because my daughter wanted Mexican. Reviews seemed lackluster so my expectations weren't high. We were pleasantly surprised. Server, Grace, was attentive and pleasant. We ordered guacamole & chips to start- portion was quite large. It was good, def not made to order. Possibly not made in House but tasty. I was super happy to find vegetarian options. I ordered a cauli taco and a tofu taco and both were seriously delish! My daughter ordered a pork belly carnitas burrito. It was massive! It was covered in queso and sauce. She'd have preferred it a little less "wet" but overall enjoyed it still. I ordered a Modelo, so can't speak to cocktails but the cold, salted pint I requested with my beer came out perfectly and the beer was perfectly cold :)
google avatar

Katie E.

Yelp
Great happy hour deals with half off margs. Loved the patio seating to people watch and enjoy some tasty drinks and apps!
google avatar

Mary R.

Yelp
Excellent food - tacos amazing !!! Wait staff very attentive and friendly . Very kind to dogs
google avatar

Maitrayee D.

Yelp
Came here very hungry . Ordered four kinds of taco . They were okay . Not very tasty . Place is very busy . Waiter was not good at all . Didn't even give us forks and spoons or water . Their drink was good . Ordered pineapple jalapeño margarita and blueberry drink sn and sparkles . Don't waste your money here .
google avatar

Chloe M.

Yelp
Great service and good food. Much better than the Charlotte location. A bit overpriced for what it is but it's in the Charleston historic district. Bartender makes a mean spicy margarita.
google avatar

Jessie C.

Yelp
It's been a while since I was here last and once again I was not disappointed. The tacos have very creative names still and the food was absolutely delicious. The margaritas were strong which I like so you're definitely getting your moneys worth. When everything else in the city was pretty packed this place had open seats considering the size of the restaurant which was great
google avatar

Tiffany A.

Yelp
The food did not come out as the menu described. We ordered the Bend and Snap salad that's listed as chicken and other toppings on top of Bibb lettuce, when it came out it was chicken salad (tasted like chicken mixed together with mayo) with no other toppings. We also ordered the standard chicken taco and the steak taco - the chicken and the steak were low quality and tasted so plain. I had gone to RuRu's in Charlotte so we'd thought this would be a safe bet for lunch, but it was extremely disappointing.

Douglas G.

Yelp
Best Tacos in Charleston. Staff is nice, atmosphere perfect and priced well. A lot of choices but this one is worth it!
google avatar

Maritza R.

Yelp
Stopped in for dinner one evening, the chips were stale, the queso was clumpy and the tacos were cold, the flour tortillas were not even warm. The fish tacos were so dry that I couldn't even bite into it, seemed like the fish had been sitting all day. Terrible food.
google avatar

Dina W.

Yelp
Ru Ru's is a nice casual spot. The restaurant is fairly large. All the items have clever names. My favorite taco is the Long Duck Dong. The portions are huge! The prices are great. The food arrived quickly but it's not always hot. The service is hit or miss. I would return.
google avatar

SH D.

Yelp
The Margaritas were good; tacos and churros not do much. Ordered the buffalo chicken, long duck tacos and churros. The chicken taco was over fried/hard and doused in hot sauce. Couldn't taste the chicken at all just the hot sauce. The duck taco, I took one bite and not another. The churro had some weird crème in the middle. Great stop for a Margarita. BTW you don't get courtesy chips and salsa.
google avatar

Diane P.

Yelp
Excellent food & service Went there before ghost tour Server accommodated our timeline Food was really good. Clever names for menu items and prices were VERY reasonable We'll be back

Yelp
Came for an appetizer & drink with friends and really enjoyed! Had fast service & amazing nachos that were enough to share between 3 people!
