Ordered yellow curry chicken and pineapple fried rice online for pickup. Everything was delicious. I ordered medium spicy for the curry chicken...next time I'll order mild 😄 . The owner handed me my order and processed my payment. She was amazingly friendly and warm. I definitely plan to return. The restaurant offers plenty of indoor seating and parking. My only concern: I ordered online which directed me to the qmenu app. My charge for the pineapple rice was $2.00 more at pickup than quoted on the app.

What a terrible experience! The atmosphere there is so heavy and negative that even my children felt it. The food was mediocre, and they took 35 minutes to serve two dishes, and we were the only ones there. I absolutely do not recommend this place. I didn't leave a tip because the service was awful, and the woman who served us came running after us, angry, saying we had to clean the table ourselves! 🤣🤣 This experience there was traumatic.

I stopped in with my partner and two kids and we expected a straightforward meal, but the host/waiter was super distracted and walked away from our table while we were giving our order to answer the phone and didn’t come back for several minutes. Once we ordered we waited a fair amount of time, but then our food was cold and filled with eggs. We asked for vegan food and eggs wasn’t listed on the menu as an ingredient. The person was combative when we said we couldn’t eat it and that my kids are allergic to eggs. Don’t go here if you want good Thai food, reasonable service, or a good environment. 0/10

This place is delicious!! We got the Thai green curry, spring rolls, thai tea and salad. Wow it did not disappoint. The salad had a penutty sauce and it was to die for, fresh veggies and everything. The spring rolls had shrimp, lettuce and beets and it was delicious. So fresh!! The thai green curry was so good. rice was cooked perfectly and the curry was to die for. Our waiter was so nice! He made conversation and was smiling. To go customers were coming in and out and you can tell its a local favourite I highly recommend!! Parking was very easy to find. I will be back!

I haven’t been here in years. Was visiting Richmond for 2 days and looking forward to going all day. Went there with my God mother and the service was absolutely HORRIBLE!!! I will never go back there! The older man serving was very rude and after waiting and waiting and waiting he brought our food in take out bags! AND IF THAT WASN’T BAD ENOUGH THE ORDER WAS WRONG!!!!!!! When we got there we were the only ones there. He had NO EXCUSE. Unbelievable!!!!

Ruang Tong has THE most fresh and care with their recipes. To hear the history of each dish and how they source the freshest and most authenticity ingredients was incredible. Probably the best kept secret of authentic Thai cuisine in RVA.

I had to ask for the same dish twice.. it was that good! I had the Pork Drunken Noodles.. 😋

Food is very good. Dine-in ambiance is quiet/relaxing. Service a bit slow. A little pricey. Owner is quirky with no people skills.

Ruang Tong is situated in an older strip style building. Ambiance is an interesting mix of more formal, lighted Asian art works mixed with American antiques spread about along with some western flare. It's a medium sized restaurant with plenty of seating for larger parties. The restaurant was fairly dirty from dining room to restrooms. Our service experience was poor. Despite being one of two groups the majority of the time we were at the restaurant, we were given the bare minimum attention. When we were waited on, the interaction was quick and unfriendly from being seated, to being told to find a restroom in the dark (had to use a phone light to get to it), to paying our bill. While the restaurant came highly recommended, we did not find the food to be as good as we hoped. We had fresh spring rolls with shrimp for an appetizer. While good, they were missing Thai basil in them which made them a bit bland. For my entree, I had the green curry and the presentation was beautiful. However, food was very salty, as curries can sometimes be, and rather oily for my liking. The combination of the ambiance, service and food factors resulted in two stars. Not horrible but not a dining experience that made me want to return.

I am a DC resident but was in Richmond for a month recently and discovered this Thai restaurant Ruang Tong. After finding this place I ate there frequently. I have had the Spring rolls, green salad, drunken noodles, panang curry, talay thai, and wild boar basil stir-fry. I obviously like spicy food as many of these dishes are one or two peppers though they can modify that if you wish. Some of those dishes came with either rice or noodles and both were very high-quality. All these dishes were extraordinary for both the quality of the ingredients and the cooking and moreso for the presentation, the plating. All very much recommended. The Spring rolls may be the best and, definitely, prettiest I have ever had. Everything was fresh and authentic. Since I ate-in every time I noticed they do a fair carry-out business. I am sure many of these are repeat customers but, imo, they are missing out on the presentation of the plate. It is equal to the food and definitely worth the dining-in experience. I lived in Atlanta for some years, ate Thai food frequently, and made friends with several of the best Thai cooks and owners there; in DC I eat at excellent Thai and Lao restaurants. I think this restaurant here in Richmond is on par with the very best in both of those cities. I make a pretty good panang myself and their version puts mine to shame. I see in a few of their past reviews some service, language issues and payment processing issues; these can vary over time. My experience was great. They waited for me to finish the appetizer before bringing the main dish so I was not rushed to finish one lest the other cools too much. I appreciated that very much as it made my overall dining more enjoyable. I Will be back in Richmond again soon and am very much looking forward to exploring the menu and enjoying this great restaurant again for more of their excellent food.

We always enjoy our visits to Ruang Tong. Convenient Forest Hill Rd location and great food. Staff is friendly and helpful with the menu if you ask questions.

Bad communication services i kept trying to say my order and then the worker was being rude and saying the wrong order then hung up in my face not saying how much it was i have to call back n i asked he said it and ended the call so fast and it gets worse i get there to pay he didn't even put my order in the system i had to order it again and wait 30 minutes when the person said 5 mins. the food was good though but BAD service.

Excellent. Can sometimes be on the spicier side. Once ordered the wrong thing and they offered to remake it but the dish they brought was even better and now my new favorite.

I'm happy to say the cute restaurant had a " face lift". The inside of the restaurant was redecorated, it is really cozy with great ambiance music. The food is excellent. We have been customers for a very long time, sad to say for a little while the food quality went down, this said, I'm happy to say we have been back a few times...and the food was excellent! Please give it a try! I had Porc belly Pad Thai and my hubby Larbgai...delicious!

Had an unpleasant pick up experience that is worth sharing so others can beware. I ordered pick up through their website and later received a call that they were out of one of the items I had ordered. I was already at the restaurant so I came inside and tried to swap the item for one of similar value. This presented an issue for the host as he wouldn't let me swap it for something more expensive, but he also wouldn't let me swap it for something less expensive when I asked for a reimbursement of the difference. He said the only thing to do was call door dash and ask for a refund. The restaurant could not process my refund. I was confused because I ordered through their website and saw no mention of DoorDash in the process. He was adamant so I called DoorDash , spent 10 minutes on the phone with them outside the restaurant, but the DoorDash rep could not locate my order. I went back inside to let the host know this. Finally, he brings me around to the tablet and shows me the order, where I see a cancel option. I ask him to cancel the order, which he does and then waves me away like I am a nuisance. All this back and forth and that's all that needed to happen for me to get my refund for an order that they couldn't make, because their website wasn't up to date with 86'd items. Super frustrating, wish I had better things to say but after this experience I won't be returning.

Staff was very friendly, attentive, caring. The food tasted great and I could tell the ingredients were very fresh. They now serve Pho and I will be back to try it out. I ate Shrimp Pad Thai, vegetable spring rolls and a Thai tea drink and they all were the best I've ever had.

With Covid-19 curbside pick up is accepted and expected... However, if they don't take your number or pick up the phone (to place the order) how can one order food or know when to pickup your food? #support_local_restaurants Ok... once we got our food, everything was amazing!!! Thank you. But please up date your ordering system.

We've been on the hunt for great Thai south of the river, and sadly, this is not it. The Google reviews were really good, so we were hopeful! I ordered Panang curry with tofu, which is advertised as coming with bamboo shoots, bell paper, basil, and eggplant. However, mine came with tofu and green beans, and nothing else, which was pretty disappointing. It said it was a homemade sauce, which I could get tastes of which was great, but I think they use MSG or way too much salt or something that made it nearly inedible. My husband ordered pad thai, which he said was just okay. He also got curry puffs, which were very gross and slimey and weird.

I rolled into Ruang Tong this past Sunday (2/11) and we were a big party of 12. Thankfully we were the only party in the entire place. Somehow they managed to take over 40 minutes to bring out the food. They had The Hunt for Red October playing on the TV above the bar so that was cool. Our server was a cool enough guy but seemed a little out of his element. I wonder how he would do when there are more than 1 table and more than 12 people. The food was pretty typical Thai food. Nothing at all to write home about. The Pad Thai was very sub-par and I knew this going in. I played it safe and just ordered my standard fried rice dish. As you can see from my picture, my fried rice dish was pretty standard. I enjoyed the flavors and was probably the only one satisfied with their meal. See playing it safe is also playing it smart. Order something that's really hard to mess up and you'll be ok. It's hard to mess up a fried rice dish and thankfully they didn't mess mine up. Your Mileage May Vary but for me this place is just a 2.

We went at opening. The staff was very friendly. Happy hour prices were great. I had a curry dish. It was wonderful. Nice atmosphere.

It's... ok. It's never bad, but it's never exciting either, and while convenient, I've had better Thai. I'm not sure if it needs more spice or more fish sauce or what exactly is missing, but the flavours just always seem a little flat next to the brightness I expect from Thai food and it's disappointing. I've been a few times, each with a long enough break in between that I forget, but third time's the charm, I think. If you want a way to ease a nervous relative into ethnic food, it's probably a fine bet, nothing too crazy that will upset a tame palate, but that's not for me.

Had a lunch date with my co-worker. Upon arriving it was us and another couple being waited on. After tasting the food I must say I had better Thai food nothing to brag about here. I ordered the shrimp pad Thai medium spice and I swear the cook was super heavy with spice. My mouth was numb from how spicy the food was. When I told the waiter about my unhappiness he recommended that I come back another time and try the mild spice when he was the one who recommended to me that their mild sauce test like nothing. He proceeded to pass me the check. I won't return here. I prefer to drive across town !!!

We got a take-away and it was fabulous! The fresh spring rolls were fresh, crunchy, and delicious. Both the pad Thai and pad See ew were cooked to perfection, and the vegetable soup with tofu was divine! It will be my only Thai restaurant in RVA.

Pad thai was delicious. Flavors where soo good. I can normally make 3 meals out of a thai entree, but I ate all of this in one sitting because every bite was so tasty. Our first time ordering out here. Now my go-to spot for pad thai.

This is at best, it pains me to leave this review, a three star experience. We were new to the area and delighted to find Ruang Tong Thai food. They advertised delivery but it seems every time we requested it, they couldn't accommodate. Started picking up our orders and with a place this small and an obscure location, you'd think they'd recall our orders, being once a week or more. No. We were a five minute drive at most and when asked about delivery, we were told it was too close and not worth the service to them (what?). The food was different every time we ordered. Fast forward five years...we ordered again. Food was bad. By bad I mean the chicken had grisle. Food was cold. No hello at the door. Everyone has something going on but as of Christmas 2019, we gave up. Keep looking or, if the stars align with this restaurant you could hit the lotto!

Wow! I ordered online (got a confirmation email and everything) but when I got to the restaurant, they did not have a record of my order. So beware of ordering online, HOWEVER, they jumped into action and prepared my chicken pad Thai within 10ish minutes. Hands down, best pad Thai I've ever had. The chicken was fresh, juicy, and cooked to perfection. No flat, dry pieces of chicken here. The sauce was delicious and creamy, and it was topped with crunchy fried onions which I've never seen before. Will definitely be back!

Food is excellent. ordering online for pickup is easy, but the bill is always more when you get there - by a couple of dollars. Yesterday I opened the bag right at the front counter to make sure the order was correct before I left. The cashier came over to me and looked at my order, grabbed the jasmine rice from me and said it did not come with the order. I said it did (Choose a side : Jasmine Rice) - part of the pineapple fried rice dish - he argued that it did not and did not bother to check with anyone. They lost a good customer. I will not return. I feel like people overlook this place a lot but it's actually very good. Food and service have never been an issue. As long as they keep the place nice and provide excellent food at good prices they should be fine.

Excellent food. We've been here a couple of times now and have been very happy with the servings. Last round: tom kha soup, yellow curry, pad Thai, and sticky rice with mango. Yum!

So I have been to this place twice and both times have been terrible and with the same staff member. My first interaction with this restaurant was about two weeks ago. I placed my order at 5 PM on a Friday afternoon and was told about a 40 minute wait time. I arrive there at 5:40 PM and was then told that it would be a 20 minute additional wait as they "just confirmed my order." When I show them the confirmation that I received at 5pm they blew me off and then said actually it would be 30 minutes. I told them if they have not made my food yet then I would just like to cancel it and they said fine. Fast forward to today I once again I'm craving Thai food and I place an order here to give them a try. I order about an hour before I was planning to pick it up. On the website I place my order and my total including tax is 39. When I arrive at the restaurant my bill is five dollars higher. This seems strange to me but I was in a rush and couldn't find my receipt immediately on my phone. When I finally get a chance to look at my receipt I realized the discrepancy so I contact the restaurant inquiring about this. The server tells me that the price on the website is different as they use "more expensive ingredients now." Mind you everything I ordered was just chicken, I didn't upgrade to anything, no special request, so I wasn't sure what he was talking about. I once again reiterated well the price on the website is wrong. So I asked him to give me an itemize list and he reports that it is "just five dollars." But what was more upsetting was the principle of it. I left it alone but I do want to warn you to just double check your receipt that you were quoted as well as what they have you pay in the restaurant. Because no matter how you looked at it even with taxes there is no reason why there should be such a large discrepancy. Which makes me wonder if they are doing this to everyone then it seems pretty fraudulent. In regards to food it was pretty mediocre. The portion sizes were smaller than I am used to. The one good thing was the dumplings were good but that was about it. Save yourself the hassle and just go to Siam Paragon Thai in Midlothian.

Overall food was flavorful! Only missing my fish sauce and some spice. It had the cashews but no raisins in it.

Hands down the best Thai food in Richmond. Excellent curries, one of the few in town that have Rama and curry puffs that melt in your mouth. The staff is so nice and friendly. Great for a group so you can share, but also perfect comfort food after a long day.

Great for large parties, food is great, and servers are really accommodating. I had the Duck Ka Pow, and it was amazing. I came with a party of 20 or more, and food came out amazingly fast. They let us all pay individually! My favorite appetizer here is the crying tiger, but their spring rolls and crispy rolls are also excellent.

Great local Thai. We have only gotten takeout, but have never been disappointed. The food is on par with the best places in the city.

During COVID they are takeout only, but they have a beautiful space inside. The food was fantastic. Wonton soup broth is the best A++++. Ruong Tong has become a regular place for my wife and I. I would order via phone, seems easier than grub hub for them

My boyfriend and I came in for lunch today for the first time. We were first really surprised because the inside was actually really nicely decorated compared to the outside. Staff was extremely friendly throughout the whole meal and it was just a really nice environment. We started off with the ginger salad because it comes with lunch. The ginger dressing was really good, very strong on the ginger, very refreshing taste compare to most restaurants which taste more like sugary sweet than ginger. We ordered the spring roll and calamari for appetizer. I personally is a huge fan of calamari, ever place that has it, I will try it. I liked it a lot, most places now uses the thin calamari compared to the big ones that curl that ruang tong uses. Tara Thai at short pump used to have it but changed. My boyfriend had the Beef Basil, presentation was nice and the flavor was really good. He said it was perfect to his taste because a lot of other Thai places tend to make it overly spicy. I had the Shrimp Pad Thai, I am used to the fatter noodles but ruang tong uses the skinny noodles and have some fat pieces in it. Flavor was good though, I really liked it. I'm the type to go to different Thai restaurants and try the same exact dish to compare. This is definitely a new top favorite on my list. Then we ended the meal with mango rice cake, it is standard with half a mango and rice cake but I always wish there was more mango. (I just love mango haha) Great way to end the meal, so good! We already planned on coming back for dinner next week and I would like to try other good food from here.

Wow, how incredibly disappointing. Took an hour and a half to get takeout food that was supposed to be ready in 45 minutes. Then they tried upcharging me 25% more saying the prices had increased (inthe 90 minutes since i had placed the order?!). Would not honor the price that I was given upon ordering. Exceptionally rude and has lost a customer. There were about 4 other people waiting forever for their orders who walked out as well. Ridiculous. Please don't waste your time.

Surely quite the unassuming restaurant from the exterior, but this place was a great find! My friends and I were on our way home when we caught a glimpse of the restaurant in a shopping center on Forest Hill and spontaneously decided to give it a try. Our server (and owner as well, I think) welcomed us in with a friendly smile and was very accommodating! He really showed his appreciation for us coming in. Collectively, we tried the Thai tea, the drunken noodles, the tofu pad thai, the tom yum soup, and a spicy chicken stir-fry dish I forget the name of at the moment. I personally didn't like the Thai tea but my roommate enjoyed it, and the tom yum soup was a little off-setting to me but everything else was very flavorful and spicy! I appreciated that they did not dilute the spice when I requested the "Thai Hot" level of spiciness - some places think that customers don't know what they can handle and don't truly add the spice requested! If you're in the Forest Hill area and are craving some Thai, this place will do the job!

Some of the best thai food in the area. I really enjoy the Pad See Ew with chicken here. The best I have ever had and I'm Thai.

Randomly tried this Thai restaurant on the way home from visiting the Hugenot flatwater area and was pleasantly surprised. The spice was good and had me needing water. Friend ordered Thai Spice and it was spicy but she could handle it well (so it's probably not terribly spicy). Have tried fried tofu appetizer, Panang curry, drunken noodles. All tasty and the curry had a lot of flavor (if a tiny bit too salty). The restaurant is clean, brightish, and has ok decor. I think the 2nd best Thai restaurant I've tried behind Chadar Thai.

When you hear the staff yelling at each other in their native language, you know it's gonna be a winner. I've had Thai all over the country, and while not the best I've ever tasted, it's certainly the best I've had in the RVA. Pad Thai and various curry dishes are good. Drunken noodles are remarkable. The spice is right.

We've gotten takeout here before and it was ok, but our order tonight was terrible. My green curry chicken was so salty, it was almost inedible. Calamari was ok, spring rolls were kind of slimy. Will not order again.

I was trying to find some place close to work for lunch and I enjoyed it enough to recommend it as a good take out option. If you're limited on time based on my visit, I would suggest you don't sit down. There were about four tables sitting when I got there, one already served, a two top and a group of eight but somehow it still took a little longer than you would expect, almost like they aren't expecting much lunch business (possible). While they weren't very busy and a little slow to move, they somehow forgot my Thai Tea, which I was interested in comparing to others I've had. Anyway, beyond the timing, the service was friendly. I decided to stick with a staple to be the judge and went with Pork Pad Thai and Won Ton soup. The won ton soup had a strong star anise taste, similiar to Pho broth and was heavily peppered unexpected but enjoyable. The Pad Thai came out piping hot (my standard experience at Thai restaurants) and flavorful. The sauce was a bit darker and more noticeable than I've had at some places and the noodles were a little thinner than those at Thai Flavor (Richmond, West End) but I thoroughly enjoyed them. The condiment caddy didn't contain some of the options that you would usually get but I added the ground red pepper and the liquid condiment with red peppers for the spicy kick that I enjoy. I waited a day for the review to see how leftovers played out since it was such a big meal and I can say, it reheats well but is a little more oily day two than some Thai food I've had. Worth going back for a quick Thai lunch. I noticed the other reviews mentioned price, this was $16 for soup, pad thai and water.

This was our first visit - The spring rolls are awesome, lots of great veggies, and the dipping sauce was amazing. Husband ordered PadThai. He LOVED it, I thought it was a bit sweet. I ordered Vegetable Green Curry, and OMG the flavor was out of this world. Husband liked it but stated he couldn't eat an entire order of it, too spicy for him. Service was great, oh and the Thai Iced Tea was super yummy. We will return

BAD experience... Went here for the first time this past weekend for dinner, and it was a very bad experience. The restaurant was 1/3 full, and everything took FOR-E-VER. Once we were seated, it took at least 10 minutes for our server to come over for the first time. I had to flag him down. We ordered appetizer spring rolls, and after waiting for 25 minutes, I finally asked ANOTHER server to check on it- he walked in the kitchen and a few minutes later the spring rolls came out. Our entrees took a full hour to come out and they were lunch size portions at best (see the picture I will post). I've never seriously considered walking out of a restaurant, but I was very very close to doing it. The only saving grace (the two stars) is that the flavor was good. Otherwise this place would get 0 stars from my experience. I want to try this place again, but I don't know if I can. I frequently play darts across the parking lot, so it would be easy to walk over... but I don't want that experience again.

I'm glad Ruang Tong is in my neighborhood-they're my go to Thai restaurant! Shamefully, I've only tried a few dishes (drunken noodles with chicken, shrimp pad Thai, tom yum soup, fresh & crispy spring rolls, and sticky rice with mango), but all of them have been delicious! There are lots of other dishes I want and need to try. I've only gotten take out, so I can't speak to their in restaurant service. Cheers!

I'm hopping on this bandwagon and saying this is definitely the best Thai in Richmond. Last night my friend and I stopped in for dinner and were blindsided by the stereotypical, over the top nice but certainly cheesy Thai restaurant greeting. You know the kind, the one where 4 people greet you with huge smiles and then 4 people stop by your table regularly to check on you, always smiling and laughing. It's intimidating at first but certainly warms your soul up a little. The food was great. I had the steamed dumplings to start with. These were good, not the highlight of dinner but I ate them all no problem. I'd love it if they were just a tad more moist, as the filling really was dry. They were still great though so don't get me wrong. For my entree I had the Pad Thai (first time new restaurant go to). When it arrived I was really disappointed how bland and dry it looked but at first bite it completely surprises you. It comes off so much cleaner and lighter than most Pad Thai I've had other place, but delivers all the same great flavors. The portion size was large, price was great, and the whole dish was a success. I'll definitely return to try more things on the menu here, but I might start taking to sitting at the bar for dinner for a little more casual, less date like feel. Go check it out!

I visit Ruang Tong at least once a week, as I live in the area. But I'd make a trip over to the Stratford Hills Shopping Center just for Thai food, if I was in another part of town. So good, and the owners are amazingly friendly. Only caveat is, the spices can be INTENSE. Take that in mind when asking for extra levels of "hot." I can usually do "Thai Hot" but I've been reduced to a quivering, hiccuping mess of tears when I've been too ambitious here. My absolute favorite dish is the rama chicken - always fresh and the perfect blend of flavor and heat.

Good news! While Ruang Tong looks like it's not much, since it's in a deserted looking little shopping center, Ruang Tong serves up some pretty tasty Thai food. I ordered the pad see eew and asked them to add duck, which the waitress advised me against and warned me she couldn't give me a refund. No worries! I devoured the whole thing. Not the best I've ever had, but still pretty damn tasty. The service was excellent and super prompt, but that might have to do with the fact that I was the only person in the restaurant. If you're in the area and craving Thai food, this is a solid spot!

I've ordered from here many times as it is a neighborhood restaurant but literally every time something is wrong with the order. Today I ordered spring rolls, no shrimp. I got spring rolls WITH shrimp. Last time it was tofu pad Thai and I received chicken pad Thai. They don't refund you when you call either, they say you have to come back and get a replacement. I keep wanting to give them another shot but they keep messing up the orders. When they take the order over the phone they are super hasty and even when I repeat myself many times, they still somehow don't get it. Today when placing the order I was told it would be a 15 min wait. When I got there after 15 mins, they said it would be a 20 minute wait, which it was. And tbh the food isn't anything to write home about. Would not recommend.

I'm leaning towards the five star rating based on the food, but there are drawbacks. Let's lean into those: It's in the same strip mall as Galley, Once Upon a Vine Too, etc. It's an ugly chunk of real estate. The interior isn't bad, but it clearly hasn't had much of a sprucing up in years. I've never dined in, but both times I've ordered take-out, I've sat at the bar and had a beer. I share the same concerns as a lot of the reviewers: the place always seems empty and I'm worried one day it just won't be there anymore. It's family-friendly, casual, and nothing to write home about on the inside. The food is tremendous, though. I've had the Drunken Noodle, which was as good as any I've had once the actual temperature of the food cooled down. Tonight I had the Pad Prik Prao, which is a spicy red sauce with protien of choice, onions and peppers. It was rich, flavorful and delicious. My wife had the Thai Basil with chicken. They gladly kept the spice out for her. She's not much of a Thai fan, but finished this entire meal in a single sitting, despite not really being hungry for the last spoonful. Powerful basil, but not enough to overpower the other ingredients. We also agreed that we could have eaten a dozen of the crispy rolls. I'm trying not to get attached, because I'm worried it won't be there in a year, but if you'd like to prove me wrong, give it a shot. It's become my Thai go-to location on the South Side.
