The Best Chinese Restaurants in Los Angeles | Eater LA

"Ruby BBQ may be unassuming, but it’s home to some of the best roast duck and crispy pork in town. This no-frills, fast-food spot operates mainly as a takeout establishment, with just a handful of tables and chairs for those dining in. The menu sticks to the basics: five-spice duck, roast duck, and crispy pork. Customers can choose combos that pair the meats with rice or noodles and vegetables or purchase slabs of the meat to-go. Options dwindle later in the day, but the food remains quick and satisfying. Ruby BBQ is cash only." - Kristie Hang

8 Best Hong Kong-Style Barbecue Restaurants in LA | Eater LA

"The good folks at Food Talk Central unearthed a true gem in the siu yuk at Ruby BBQ. The perfectly golden-brown skin has an even crunch that gives way to a melting hunk of meat. Subtly spiced to take the edges off any harsh porcine scent, the siu yuk is a paragon of the genre. Make sure to come early before they sell out and bring cash as it’s a cash-only establishment." - Euno Lee

Cash only! Pork belly as of Feburary 17, 2025 is $21.99 a pound worth it. I know it's more expensive than other places but this place has really mastered there craft of making roasted pork belly. I always stop by here if I'm in the area. I'm a large hispanic male that's eaten chicharron all my life and this place really impresses.

Google
Ruby BBQ in El Monte is a hidden gem for those looking for delicious and flavorful Chinese cuisine. Their famous roasted pork and duck are a must-try, and the portions are generous and reasonably priced. Every year during Chinese New Year, we purchase their roasted pork and duck to add to our New Year’s eve feast. Today we came here dined in for the first time and were impressed with the lunch special dishes including Chinese broccoli with Chinese sausage, roasted pork, and fried garlic pork ribs. Each dish was packed with flavor and satisfying. What sets Ruby BBQ apart from other restaurants is the added bonus of free rice and soup with their lunch specials. The family-owned atmosphere is also a plus, and the staff is friendly and welcoming. The restaurant may only have a few tables, but the taste of their food more than makes up for it. The fact that they roast their meats three times a day to ensure freshness is a testament to their commitment to quality. In conclusion, if you're looking for authentic and delicious Chinese cuisine, look no further than Ruby BBQ in El Monte. Their famous roasted pork and duck, along with the other tasty dishes, make this restaurant a must-visit

Google
CASH ONLY! Most dishes average $15/plate. Bring enough for tip too! I feel bad, because I barely had enough to cover the cost, but there guys are REALLY good! The skin on the Roast Pork is the crispiest I've ever had! If you have teeth problems, that crunch may give you problems though. You'll have to order something softer, or give the skin to someone else. The roast duck wasn't anything special, but they got the taste down and the skin on the duck was nice. Just the meat wasn't at a prime young age, but they did a good job with a mediocre duck. Would love to see what they do with better ingredients next time. The egg plants were on point, and their "A-vegetables" weren't too oily, and had tons of flavor. Their short ribs were GREAT too! Seasoned with a nice and sweet glaze, with a really crispy breaded crust. BUT, the bone is left in because it gives this impression of being fresher. But between spitting out the bone and crunching on the crust, you may bite into the wrong one hard enough. So be careful! But still worth eating.

Google
for the price, it's perfect. i encourage you to order way too much, and definitely get the duck and roast pork. look, it's not the "worlds best duck" or whatever. but it's SOLID. to me, a solid, consistent place deserves 5 stars. the folks there are nice too. helps if you speak mando or Canto but the menu has English translations. and cash only!!

Google
Fewer options late into the evening, but food was pretty good and quick. Ordered the two item bbq combo with crispy pork and duck as those were the only two options. Comes with rise and veggies (baby bok choy) which paired well with the rich meat. Service was decent, but definitely a language barrier, but not so bad with pictures and pointing. Was hoping to get some bbq pork and wish the crispy pork was crispier, but was very good and a place I would visit again when in the neighborhood.

Google
Super awesome to see, South El Monte has so much Asian foods and they are all delicious. A lot of people in South El Monte love Chinese, Vietnamese, and Japanese cultures and so the businesses in the area thrive. I also enjoy getting Korean BBQ meats in the South El Monte City or a nice hot meal at the Daikokuya Japanese Ramen place on Garvey. I noticed that a lot of people in Korean Town over in Los Angeles were starting to purchase up commercial real estate and launch businesses in South El Monte. In a recent merger and acquisition of a major grocery store business chain in South El Monte, it had become Korean owned as well and started to add many awesome products such as canned boba drinks. South El Monte is one of the most vibrant, diverse, and sweet pockets of hidden gem Asian foods in California and the San Gabriel Valley. When I go to school on the East Coast, I really miss it.

Google
5 star for the pork belly! Good portions for the price. The atmosphere is a bit underwhelming but it doesn’t really matter if you’re just trying to satisfy your cravings for some delicious roasted Pork Belly.

Google
Found this little cozy Cantonese cuisine in El Monte. I have been craving for HK foods for quite sometime, decided to give this a try. Their price is very reasonable, 5 dishes for $46. The most expensive is the roast pork, 1lb for 14.90. And it is very delicious, very crispy and crunchy skin. The rest of the foods are very good as well, however, they are on the salty side. Absolutely love this restaurant, will definitely buy from them, and try other dishes as well.

Yelp
This is for to go order only. The bbq pork belly is the best but pricey. I bought two pounds and ate one pound and left the another pound in fridge. It still maintains the crispy the next day. It is not salty and the meat texture is soft.

Yelp
Cash only $25/1 lb Wow. I had this bookmarked for a bit and I'm so glad I went. One of the best finds of 2025. Even though I'm trying to reduce my red meat consumption, this spot makes that immensely more difficult. The macau pork belly is everything. From the crispy skin, to the luscious fat, to the juicy meat, wow.. I have no words lol let's just say my tastebuds went on a rollercoaster called ayahuamacaully (terrible pun for ayahuasca + macau pork belly) with every chew. There was still two slabs left when I came into the shop at 1-2pm.

Yelp
We got take out from Ruby BBQ Cantonese food. Solid food in large portions compared to others. Very good Wok hay flavor on the Fried Rice and Beef Chow Fun. A shared parking lot. Place is kind of small. Rating: 4 Stars
google avatar

Kay M.

Yelp
Free parking at the onsite parking lot. Parking never been a problem. Been coming here since they opened many years ago. The food was really good. We usually get the roasted pork but the waitress convinced us to get the duck. Half of the roasted duck was $17.99. It was really good. We also got the vegetables with dried fish. It was a big place of veggies for $13.99. The fried mien with beef was $13.99 and also a big portion. The food came with soup and rice. The wait staff could be more courteous. Most customers order the food to go. Come for the food, not for the service.

Yelp
Rating overall is 4.5/5. Found this place through one of my friends mentioning how it was pretty popular! Note that it's a bit more expensive and cash only! Roast duck (4.5/5): the duck was very flavorful and juicy and exactly what I was looking for in a roast duck. Crispy pork belly (4.5/5): I've had this plenty of times before at many places but I was pretty shocked at how crispy the skin actually was at rubys. Would definitely get again. Mapo tofu (3.5/5): their mapo tofu portion was pretty large and it was on the simpler side which made it very easy to eat. I rated it a bit lower because my personal taste for mapo tofu is for it to be a bit spicier and less starchy in consistency.

Yelp
Why did I wait so long? Dropped by on my way home to pick up a few things to share with my parents. That pork belly is the finest Chinese BBQ style pork belly I have ever eaten. My Dad kept snacking on it as Mom was taking her share. The duck skin wasn't as crispy, but that could have been my fault since it was chopped and boxed. It was very tasty! Also tried some BBQ pork for fun. The pork belly is out of this world.

Yelp
I am so glad to have found this gem via Yelp! It's a no frills spot in a shopping center that I've passed by so many times without knowing it was there. I saw the lunch plate photos on Yelp of the duck and roast pork combo and knew I had to try it. It was empty when we arrived which confused me since the reviews say they are really busy and sell out fast, but nonetheless I showed the lady the photo of the combo I wanted and the guy quickly chopped up the order. The plate was hefty and the amount of food they give you is shareable. The pork was so delicious and so crispy! The skin was perfect! The duck was ok, I wouldn't order that again. The sauce was very good and soaked into the rice perfectly. The pork was so good that we came back later in the day to just order more a la cart to take home. Service was friendly and quick. Easy parking in a private lot.

Yelp
Roasted pork is now $21.99/lb and the duck is $31.99/lb Will update when I get home and try the food.

Yelp
My boyfriend found this place, with the intention to have us try duck for the first time. As entering, we noticed they have 2 small menus by the cashier and everything else was very minimal. It giving more of a "to go" place than an actual sit down. Our order was roughly $74 The lady attending us was very nice. We got the roast duck, sticky rice, beef chowmein and crispy pork belly. Portions were huge!!!! We were not aware of this. It was plenty of food. The Roast duck very juicy and delicious (to my boyfriend) I was not a big fan. We however did not expect it to have many bones. The crispy pork belly was just the right amount of crispy and tenderness. The chowmein and sticky rice was different than what I am used to, but I am aware this is authentic Chines food. They were still good!

Yelp
This is the place to go get your crispy pork belly. Yes you can make it at home but this place the meat is full of flavors! Amazing!!! It's a small place and I usually just get to go. I would suggest to call in and order, saves you time. It's located in a small plaza.

Yelp
The two things you need to know. #1 Crispy Roast Pork #2 Cash Only Maybe someday I'll learn something else, but really that's all I or you really need to know about Ruby BBQ. Anything else is just bonus.

The also had 5 spice seasoning 5/5. Would definitley make a trip out here to grab more bbq. **Cash only!

Yelp
I came here for the crispy pork. I came later in the day so there weren't much options for food aside from ordering to-go from the menu. The roasted duck was delicious and crispy with just enough fat and meat.
google avatar

Yelp
Great alternative for bbq duck or roast pork when you do not want wait in long lines at the more popular establishments. I went in on a Saturday at 11:40 and it was completely empty. Buyer be warned they only take cash. I did call in my order 20 minutes before arriving but unfortunately they did not have it ready. So a bit annoying they were slow without even one other customer. I had to ask them to cut holes on top the box for roast pork so the skin would not get soggy.

Yelp

Yelp
We thought this place would be good. When the chow mein came .. omg. It was horrible. And it wasn't good at all. It was trash to be honest. Told the waitress and she didn't care at all. Accept about that we need to pay. I recommend this place for the Dogs. Even dogs would not like this krap

Yelp
Ruby BBQ FOOD is bare-bones hole-in-the-wall. Inside the restaurant was totally empty and depressing looking I almost left ;however, my trusted Yelp friends lead me here and they are correct: the Cantonese style roasted pork belly (Siu Yuk) is among the BEST at Ruby's. Am blown away at how good the Siu Yuk was! Flavorful meat, tender and the crispiest outside skin; cut perfectly. We bought one pound to start, tasted a piece in the car only to turn the car around again to purchase another pound. By the way, this heats up well in the air fryer. $31 per pound for Siu Yuk/ CASH ONLY/Closed on Wednesdays. Customer service is efficient. Visited May/2023.

Yelp
I was sad when the Sam Woo in Focus Plaza was forced to close its doors. I no longer had a spot to get crispy and tender roast pork. Recently I heard about the roast pork belly at Ruby BBQ and eagerly went the very next day. If you go during peak hours they will have several slabs of roast pork belly on display, dripping with delicious fat. This is definitely not a health food. However, If you don't mind the extra fat, each bite you take will be rewarded with luscious crispy skin and juicy meat. This is the best roast pork in LA.

Yelp
I was craving for Chinese bbq pork and roast pork. So, here we go. Guess what ? No bbq pork. So Ordered combo plate of 2 bbq items of duck and roast pork, which were pretty good, lean, almost no fat. The only thing Is the picture shown it comes with rice, but the lady said no. Also Ordered e-fu noddle, it literally is only noddle cook with soy sauce and probably 10 very thin sliced chinese mushroom. The lady was not happy we only ordered 2 dishes. Very rude service. The restaurant is decent clean, there was another family was there eating too, the rest ordered to go. Plenty of parking, considering the businesses in that complex were pretty dead. As much as the roast pork and duck are petty good, but I will not come back because they are so rude to customers.

Yelp
Came here with a friend. Got roast pork / duck, salted fried rice, and a fried cod dish. Service was fast, waitress didn't understand English too much but was able to communicate efficiently with pointing at menu items. Ambiance was no frills, mostly def a place to do takeout. Everything was great, just very salty. Make sure to drink a lot of water! If you don't enjoy that, the fried rice / cod fish may not be for you. The roast pork / duck combo was to die for though, should be a nondebatable starter.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best roasted duck n roasted pork in SGV, so crispy on the skins!!! And juicy enough delicious foods mixed with rice!!! Plus the crispy tofu on outside n softened inside... the soy sauce wasn't too salty!!! Sweet and sour pork was the best in town on value in crispy skins outside n tenderness inside the meat!! Plus the prices were so good and attractive nowadays, just prepare to pay cash only... Services were quick n nice, family style serving with streamed rice n house soup if you order a few entrances in a meal with a couple in the group!!

Yelp
Came here 09/02/2023. Ruby BBQ is a Chinese restaurant CASH ONLY!!!!! (-1 star). They have no signs or anything advertising this. CASH ONLY!!! Food: We tried the #85 BBQ Combo, #64 Salted Fish and Chicken Fried Rice, #18 Fish with Spicy Salt. BBQ combo is good to share two people. It is half of the signature duck and pork. Fried rice was yummy but quite salty. Fish is really salty. You need vegetable dishes and a lot of tea to absorb the salt. Service: Super dinky, no frills place. One waitress maybe 7 tables. Open kitchen. The bathroom is literally right behind the kitchen which is a bit sus. Almost no English. Ambiance: Not a date spot, just come here for authentic food that's good, cheap, but quite salty.

Yelp
I stopped visiting Monterey Park for Asian food as often because the budding and bloooming Asian culture in South El Monte makes the food way better. I am waiting for a new Korean bonchon garlic wings business to come around in South El Monte as well, the business is good for Asian people such as the many 6+ boba shops that are all brand new in the area. South El Monte has a flourishing community of buddhist temples, Taiwanese foods including shaved ice, boba, and popcorn Chicken. South El Monte has Japanese udon, sushi, and some of the best teriyaki businesses. Ruby BBQ adds a good option for morning Cantonese food and it is also closeby to a Cantonese dim sum, yum cha.

Jenny R.

Yelp
Came here for the famous duck and pork belly and this place doesn't disappoint! The pork belly was so flavorful and the skin was cooked to perfection! Duck was succulent and seasoned well. They are known for the protein but their menu items is just as good has the higher end restaurants where you would go have at a nice sit down restaurant. The line to wait to order says it all! The lady at the counter was quite nice considering the chaos around her. Note: they only take cash!
google avatar

Titu D.

Yelp
I was mulling around posting for this mom and pop shop... Immigrant owned, not a chain, not commercial or marketed... Better than SamWoo in Alhambra, San Gabriel, and Rosemead. Their food is better than your larger Chinese BBQ institutions, and they should be recognized for it. *Side note, I gave them a sign from my hands asking how much "this" was. He asked me how many people instead and suggested that I I reduce the size of my initial order. (Take that as what you will.)

Yelp
I rarely head out to buy roasted pork. Usually, my mom would get it. I was craving some today so I decided to come here. Dang ...didn't know roasted pork can be so expensive lol 1lb for $22 something. It was pretty daymn good so I guess it was worth it? Lol I dunno It was so juicy and the skin was crispy. Just the right amount of fats lol I been to places where they gave me mostly fats...maybe that why I rarely buys em. I was hoping for it to be more golden but it looked a bit burnt and dry. Scared me a bit because it would have been such a waste to toss. I can't eat dry roasted pork lol Glad it was juicy. Will be back to try their char siu & ducks :)

Yelp
Love their crispy pork belly. When mother in law doesn't want to cook. We always order food from this place. The prices are good. The portions are big. We orders 4-5 dishes for 7 people. Super causal home cook food.
google avatar

Lillian L.

Yelp
This is one of my go-to places for the roast pork belly. Seems to be a little pricier than other places that sell BBQ but I think that it is worth it! The texture, appearance and taste is pretty consistent and I have been here more than 10 times to date. This establishment only takes cash...so be sure to have enough of it whenever you come here. I have tried a few of their dishes including the roast duck. They are pretty good but I primarily come for their roast pork belly and will continue to do so in the future. The 5 stars is for their roast pork belly.
google avatar

GV M.

Yelp
I was craving pork belly while thinking about my time from macau. Looked for a spot and found this restaurant. The crispy pork belly was excellent! I bought one pound. It was crispy and juicy on the inside. Not perfectly similar to macau crispy pork belly, but it is really good! I also bought the beef chow mein and was also excellent! Definitely coming back for more.
google avatar

Gail Astrid M.

Yelp
We got the string beans, the Peking duck and the bbq pork. Definitely a good price. Cash only. Wish the bbq pork was less fatty. Overall would get again for potlucks
google avatar

Samuel C.

Yelp
While not as good as the roast pork you typically get back in East Asia, it is nonetheless one of the better roast pork in Greater LA. I will continue to look for the best Cantonese BBQ meat in Greater LA. The rating is more of a 3.5 than a 3. For some reason, I always get the roast pork just as they open at 10 a.m. Being fresh off the oven (from not too long ago), the roast meat at this state tastes tender, quite juicy, and warm. I had their roast duck noodle soup. It is decent, as you would expect from a Cantonese-style cafe.

Carolina T.

Yelp
We came here for the first time and had a horrible experience. We were not familiar with the area and hungry. The service was horrible. The lady did not speak English and was not nice at all. We got the worst tasting noodles. Dry and crispy and they did not offer to replace our order but handle us the bill and said you have to pay. I would come here again.
google avatar

Christopher M.

Yelp
Great tasting pork................... I'll be back soon, keep up the good work. Be renting soon see us soon

Joe B.

Yelp
their roasted duck was good. I used to go to Sam Woo but recently Sam Woos duck are dried and not juicy. They might have given me an old roasted duck.

Yelp
Little bit of a drive coming from San Diego but this place has very tasty pork roast belly. not much to say about the service almost all of Chinese restaurants has the same service.

Yelp
I discovered Ruby BBQ from several posts on SGV Eats months ago, and finally made my way! I ordered their house chicken and their roasted pork to share... and it was a HIT! They raved about how nice and crispy their roasted pork was and how incredibly flavorful it was compared to our usual spots, and quickly as where they were located. Ha! I especially enjoyed the chicken as it was tasty, but not overly salty as it can sometimes be at other places. We visited on a Sunday afternoon around 1pm. There was plenty of parking in their lot and no wait. The woman who helped us was friendly and made sure our order correct and packaged properly as we made separate orders. So thoughtful! Needless to say, we'll be back to try their roasted duck, mapo tofu and more.
google avatar

Yelp
So happy we found this little gem! Can't believe we've lived so closed yet never knew about this place! Food: 5 stars - ordered over 14 varieties and all tasted delish! Our fav were Dry Salted String Beans, Eggplant Szechuan Style, Rock Cod Fillet w/Spicy Salt and Beef Chow Fun Service: 5 stars - everyone seemed friendly Ambiance: ...it's a hole in the wall Parking: 4 stars - has its own parking lot but small

Yelp
The roasted pork was a big hit at our potluck party. It was gone so fast. Lol. I want to go back for more. This is more a takeout place than a sit down restaurant.
google avatar

Elizabeth W.

Yelp
First time here. Cash only. Small takeout place. The roast pork had a gorgeous crispy skin, the meat was tender....good job on the roast. I got a half pound and it was cut up to order, Good knife job too...portions in medallion squares perfect for sharing. A little goes a long way and can feed more people. The woman behind the counter asked me to look at it on the scale, it said $11.99. I approved it. I also ordered a half duck. Cost about 17 bucks. Sauce was included for the pork and also another sauce for the duck. Everything was delicious, not salty, quality protein. I just wish they cut a couple of holes on the pork, so the crispy skin stayed crispy....but it was still crunchy even after a 10 min ride home. They don't sell char sui here...and they do reasonably priced party trays.
google avatar

Katie T.

Yelp
Jaw-droppingly incredible. Had a craving for Siu Yuk and found this place on Yelp, figured I would check it out. We came at open on a Saturday and came when both the Roasted Pork and Duck were fresh. We ordered the #6 beans and everything was incredible. By far the best Cantonese duck and pork I've had at any restaurant. I found myself getting emotional eating the meal because it brought me back to my childhood on special occasions like lunar new years when you would gather around with all your family for a celebratory feast. It was decadent but also had such a home cooked feeling. Couldn't stop eating even when h was stuffed, I found myself going back to the beans - they're so addicting! Definitely climbed to become my new favorite Chinese restaurant. We'll definitely be back

Yelp
Saw this place on tik tok and decided to try it. Called my order over the phone for pick up was informed it was cash only so don't forget to pick some up. Ordered the pork belly and shrimp fried rice for myself and Mongolian beef for my coworker(couldn't get a picture but she loved it). Everything was delicious! Would definitely come back for more. My total with the 3 items was 49.50 and thats because they weigh the porkbelly by the pound.
google avatar

J C.

Yelp
One of the worst customer service ever!!!!! We walked in for the pickup as ordered way in advance and was told to stay in line with the folks have not ordered yet. Which was a long line. We ordered days in advance for 11am pickup and it is now 10 min to 12pm!!!! Other people comes in and was able to pickup without standing in line and was in and out. The foods are good but wouldn't come here for it! The lady wouldn't speak to you or look at you as if she was annoyed. Not happy about this place recommended by my sister raving about its good food.
google avatar

Kristie L.

Yelp
The hype is real. Came in around lunch time on a weekday and it looked like a lot of people were coming in to just pickup. I ordered a pound of roasted pork and am debating if twice in one day is too much pork - mouthwatering. Perfect flavor, great crunch on the skin. Wanted char siu but it wasn't available - definitely want to go back and try the duck and some of the other menu items. Ambiance is low key. Take out is probably the best option. Parking was easy but I can see it getting crowded. CASH ONLY.

Yelp
This spot is hands down the spot if you're craving Roast Pork. Crispy skin roasted to perfection - there's really no other Chinese BBQ place that measures up to their Roast Pork. Come early for it though b/c they do sell out, especially on days of major Chinese celebrations and festivals. Like most mom-and-pop's in SGV, don't expect a lot from the decor or the service (it's not bad but it's not legendary either although it does help if you speak the same language as the staff). But of course, the food delivers here! They have lunch specials and their stir-fry dishes are delicious, plenty of meat and vegetarian options. Love their stir-fry tofu and eggplant dishes. Their chow fun and noodles are yummy too! Nothing like an delicious comfort food that doesn't break the bank!

Yelp
Alright, it's already obvious this place has the best crispy roast pork in town but their Mapo Tofu deserves total recognition!!! I am so glad now they have dine-in, and since people order to-go, there is no wait to eat here! My other favorite is the Obo vegetable dish with dried shrimp, shitake mushrooms and glass noodles. It doesn't have much flavor but I it makes me less guilty eating it together with their crispy roast pork. So guys, remember the holy fournity: 1. Crispy roast pork 2. Roast duck 3. Obo veggies 4. Mapo Tofu CASH ONLY!
