Ruby King Bakery - Review - Chinatown Oakland - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"When you’ve had enough of the erratic operating hours at Golden Gate Bakery in SF, go to Ruby King in Oakland. Not only does it have a consistent schedule (7am-5pm daily except Tuesdays), it also serves egg tarts that are just as good. The pastry shell is ruffled and flaky and packed with a dense, not-too-sweet custard. Trays of these things are constantly coming out of the kitchen, so don’t be worried if you encounter a line. We suggest getting a boxful as well as a few of the wife cakes—the winter melon filling is chewy and smooth. There’s plenty of tables, though you may need to hover and wait out the regulars as they catch up over a game of cards." - Patrick Wong

How To Spend A Day In Oakland Chinatown: Community Spaces, Restaurants, Shops, & More - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"I can’t tell you how hard it was to narrow this down to one Chinese bakery. The other candidates - Alice St. Bakery, Napoleon Super Bakery, Wonder Food Bakery, and the newest kid on the block, R’Noodle & Bakery - all have their takes on pineapple buns, sheet cakes, and traditional pastries. But if pressed, I would admit that Ruby King’s dan tat (egg custard tarts) have the flakiest crusts in town. Get them fresh out of the oven, and you can’t beat the winning combination of the crisp layers melting into the sweet, soft custard with each bite." - daphne wu

The Best Bakeries in the East Bay | Eater SF

"For the most flaky, layered, and buttery egg tarts in the East Bay, there is only one place to go: Ruby King. The old-school, no-frills spot in Oakland Chinatown does brisk to-go business, serving a variety of Chinese buns for about a buck. But those egg tarts, with their quivering, still-warm centers? Just $1.50 apiece." - Dianne de Guzman

Best Restaurants in Oakland Chinatown Open for Takeout and Delivery | Eater SF

"The East Bay’s king of egg tarts — with the flakiest crust and the most quivery custard — is open after an extended hiatus at the beginning of shelter in place. It’s open for takeout from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily." - Luke Tsai

Google
Best traditional Hong Kong style pastry here in Oakland Chinatown! Their Lotus Seed with Thousand Years Old Duck Egg 皮疍酥 is divine! Everything is delicious and in very reasonable prices! Service was fast and friendly! Seating tables are mostly occupied by senior uncles which make it almost impossible to sit down to have a coffee and enjoy the delicious pastry!

Kenneth Hong

Google
The bread is so delicious and affordable. It’s very hard to find a traditional Hong Kong style bakery like this. It’s a family owned business with very nice staff. I got the egg tart, baked chicken pie, and curry beef puff. I would come here again for sure.

Gladys Pablo

Google
Love getting my cakes here!! Bread always taste so fluffy and good, never going back to anything else. The only thing is that they only accept cash and limited parking.

Phyllis Horneman

Google
We wanted to try some mooncakes and decided to get a variety of items for Sunday brunch. No parking but we knew that. The lady was helpful once she figured out we were doing a brunch. The mooncakes were mostly new flavors (e..g. lotus seed)for us. Sweet and extremely dense, think plutonium. Perhaps an acquired taste. Pork buns were very good, also coconut and pineapple pastries. The curry beef bun was a standout. Nice alternative to usual brunch. Well worth coming back.

Mat Lit

Google
Very nice flaky pastries. Had a curry beef puff, chicken pie and coconut twist. The fillings for the savory stuff were actually quite sweet, which balanced out the pastry which isn’t very sweet at all. Made the mistake of eating the coconut twist in my office, which spread crumbs all over the place. Would recommend eating outside because it’s so flaky. Would love to try the Dan tat next time — they sold out by the time I came!

I had a delightful assortment of treats from Ruby King Bakery Café, including a dozen egg tarts, 6 curry beef puffs, and an 8-inch Mixed Fruit birthday cake, all totaling around $55. The standout feature of this bakery is undoubtedly their superbly crafted, flaky pastries. The real star of the show was the Mixed Fruit birthday cake. If you find traditional store-bought birthday cakes overly sweet, Ruby King Bakery Café offers a perfect alternative. The sponge of the cake was exceptionally soft, and the overall sweetness was just right—not overpowering. The combination of great value and high quality makes Ruby King Bakery Café a must-visit for pastry enthusiasts. I highly recommend it, especially if you prefer a more balanced and less sugary birthday cake experience. *Tip: I placed a phone call to order the birthday cake two days in advance, though it seems they also have ready-to-go birthday cakes available in-store.

Google
Pretty good local bakery within Chinatown Oakland. We were able to buy some delicious goodies to bring home from our trip to Chinatown. It is a smaller bakery with a good selection and hot coffee! Service was good and quick despite the lines due to social distancing during the pandemic.

Google
Got a 9in Asian bday cake (mixed fruits) for my dear friend and it was so popular. Call at least a few days before to place your order. Everybody loved it. The sponge cake part was so fresh, and the cream wasn't too sweet. Loads of strawberries too. $33 bring cash.

Yelp
My favorite egg tarts in Bay Area. Honestly I like them better than that OTHER really famous (almost always on vacation) egg tart place in SF. The ones here are not sweet, very custard-y, and always fresh. I love eating them right as they come out of the oven, piping hot! We arrived later in the day, around 2PM, so the selection in the glass case were limited. However, my pro tip is to just ask for the egg tarts or pineapple buns. They have them in the back and don't display them. These are the BEST items in the whole store, and why this place is so popular among Chinese people. However, the bakery items in the case are pretty good too, especially the bbq buns! Egg tarts are amazing. The pineapple cake is amazing as well. I find that at 90% of Chinese bakeries, the top of the pineapple cake always falls off so easily which is soooo annoying. But Ruby King has somehow figured out a way to bake them so that the tops stay on the cake. It is definitely one of my favorite pineapple buns in Bay Area as well. This is in Chinatown, so street parallel parking is a must. Bathrooms available but only for paying customers (locked with a key). There is some seating inside (2-3 tables) and coffee as well.

Yelp
Came and got egg tart, ate it while it was still warm. Wow what a bite! The pastry was so flaky and crisp, and the custard part of it blends so well with the pastry. Probably should have gotten some other things to try too -- maybe next trip! They have a fancy machine that ties red string around the box, which is apparently from the 70s! Very cool to watch

Yelp
My go-to spot for Chinese baked goods in Oakland Chinatown. Great birthday cakes - you can custom order, just place your order at least a day ahead. Their egg tarts and pork buns are delicious, and my favorites include the lemon-flavored bird's nest pastry and swiss rolls. PS: the homeless dude out front is generally harmless, and don't be surprised by the group of OG Chinese men monopolizing all the tables inside the bakery -- do plan on taking your goods to-go.
google avatar

Jacquelyn C.

Yelp
I tried their fresh egg tarts, which was so flaky and perfectly custardy at an affordable price. The curry beef and bbq pork puff pastries were also nice and flaky, but would be better heated up. Got 7 items for roughly $8! Quick service with some seating, but is mostly a takeout bakery. Parking may be a bit hard too.

Yelp
We came for an event in Chinatown and got there early so we decided to have a cup of coffee and some baked chicken buns. This was my first time here and there's plenty of tables to sit down at and we ordered 3 cups of coffee and 3 baked chicken buns. Coffee was piping hot and just hit the spot. The chicken buns were also good and moist. Now I have a place in Chinatown to have some coffee for only $2.10. One thing that needs improvement is the bathroom as how C Town bathrooms go!
google avatar

Sylvia K.

Yelp
Ruby King Bakery is our favorite bakery for egg tarts in the Bay Area! Flakey crust with soft egg custard inside. It's not too sweet and the price is very affordable! Other buns are good as well! Service is good! Highly recommend this bakery!

Yelp
4.5 stars rounded up to 5. Okay. If you are following, I met with my friends from the past at Hashi Gawa the other night and they encouraged me to get my egg tarts from here rather than from Napoleon, where I am a regular customer; see all my other reviews. Quality/Quantity - 6 egg tarts, see pictures. Good size and quality. Wife really liked it, daughter prefers their competitor. Atmosphere - Decent size location. Plenty of indoor seating. Actually fairly busy. Many people (of the older generation) was hanging out, drinking coffee, & eating pastries. Street parking only, or nearby garages. Open 6 days a week from 7am to 5pm, closed Tuesdays. They used to be open 7 days a week, glad they are now taking a day off. Such hard workers. Service - Good, two employees at the front of the house. Very efficient, welcoming, and nice. Price - $1.50 each; $9 total. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since like forever. We might be regular customers now.

Yelp
I heard that the egg tarts were really good, so I made a note to stop by while in Oakland Chinatown. There was no line when I went, and they had plenty of baked goods available. Cash only! Egg tart ($1.50) +Warm, flaky crust: I heard an audible crunch as a took my first bite, and that definitely wasn't my last! +Custard was creamy, eggy, and not sweet. *Verdict: 4.5 stars rounded down to 4. Service left a lot to be desired as the cashier rudely commented "That's it?" when I just ordered an egg tart. However, that won't stop me from returning for a fresh egg tart if I'm ever in Oakland Chinatown again!

Yelp
Located in the heart of Chinatown. Ambiance: Step into Ruby King Bakery, and you're greeted with the warm, comforting aroma of freshly baked goods. The cozy atmosphere is reminiscent of traditional Chinese bakeries, complete with a friendly staff who make you feel right at home. Pastries and Breads: The star of the show is undoubtedly their egg tarts. With a flaky crust and a perfectly balanced custard filling, these tarts are a hit among locals and visitors alike. Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned egg tart connoisseur, Ruby King's version is bound to impress. And let's not forget their Hong Kong-style cakes--light, airy sponge cakes filled with fresh fruit and cream that are just the right amount of sweet. I was not a huge fan of the curry buns though, because I personally like them crispier and flakier. Please try the taro buns though, I always get the taro bunnnnns yum. Cakes: Ordered the Ube fruit cream cake, called ahead of time to reserve it for pick-up on the birth date. The ube cream flavor was strong and the cake came with plenty of fruits and some pieces of chocolate on top. Ube fruit cream cake was definitely a pleasure to try, but I prefer the classic fruit cream cake much more!

Yelp
We had the beef, curry, puff, and egg tarts, I am so happy this place is far from my home because I would literally be here every week! Absolutely addicting everything tastes so fresh! Their service was super fast and friendly. These ladies know what they're doing. And the ambience is seriously like a little hole in the wall! Not much going on, but it's definitely not needed because this place is a true gem!

Yelp
I come here for the egg tarts and cocktail buns! I definitely recommend coming in the morning or on a weekend when they have more business so the pastries come out hot and fresh. They are very fast and if there's a line it moves quickly. I recommend paying in cash. Also, there is space for seating inside. Egg Tart * The best I've had in the Bay Area * Always hot, fresh, crispy and flaky exterior * Only $1.50 compared to some of it more expensive competitors Cocktail Bun * Hot, fresh * Good ratio between bread and filling * Buttery and great texture

Yelp
Date:11/27/2023 Time: 3:40 PM 64° Sunny I'm in Oakland Chinatown. I stop at Tao Yuen to purchase some dim sum pastries, but they are closed. Okay, the back up plan is Ruby King Bakery, 1/2 block away, before I hop on the 51A bus to Alameda. It has been a long, long, LONG time since I bought anything from this bakery, as all the way back in the 90's before Yelp was around. Eats to go: apple turnover, cream horn and a slice of chocolate cake. Cost: $5.85. Not bad for those prices. The chocolate cake was perfect, moist and not overly sweet. The other two items are in the fridge for later consumption. The cream horn was okay. It was lacking in the whipped cream...not enough. Good place for us older Chinese people to hang out, enjoy the baked goods in the morning. Because I was there in the late afternoon, the selection of baked goods was limited to what they had. I didn't see any egg tarts and taro pastries. Service was quick and the employee and was helpful. Return visit? Might, then might not.

Yelp
If I'm in the Oakland area, this is my go to for Chinese egg custard tarts. They are no golden gate bakery, but pretty good and cheaper. It's a normal Chinese bakery otherwise so just grab and go.

Yelp
Very popular Chinatown bakery. Great pastries at great value. There is usually a line out the door but it moves fast. Please note CASH ONLY. No seating.

Yelp
When in Oakland, Ruby King is always on my go-to list. My favorite is the egg tarts and pineapple buns and my fiance's favorite is their curry puffs. You noticed that everything I listed is plural? It's cause one is never enough. Ruby King is the epitome of delicious baked goods that makes you want more. The egg tart is flakey, and light to balance out with the sweetened baked eggs. The pineapple buns are buttery and the savory curry puffs are so flavorful. I typically order a variety of items whenever I am in town, but those are my top three. Whenever I head back to my hometown, I would order 2-4 boxes and my family loves everything, especially the cocktail bun (HK sweet bun with coconut bits). I have never tried their sponge cakes before, but I heard a lot of good things so that'll be on my list. Sometimes I would see the owner hand-beating the sweet cream. The owners are the sweetest and I am so glad that they stayed in business after the pandemic and with all the on-going violence. I hope their business continues to thrive because they deserve everything and Ruby King is the only reason for me to be out and about in the streets of Oakland.

Yelp
Cannot believe the news that the owner of Ruby King was pistol-whipped this week. Hope to provide some Yelp love to promote this awesome awesome bakery!!! Listen: THIS IS A SERIOUSLY DELICIOUS PASTRY OPERATION. When you think of the "not too sweet" fruit cake of your dreams, the type that gets you all happy and nostalgic and warm with each bite...this is the place that makes those. I had the great privilege of consuming a Ruby King cake and I wanted to have a slice of cake for every meal for the rest of my life. Highly recommend gorging yourself on Ruby King pastries and cakes, as well as supporting local Asian-owned businesses given what we're seeing lately. #stopasianhate

Yelp
There was so much good food to be had in a recent trip to Hong Kong, that I did not have room for egg tarts. So on route to my flight, I hastily picked one up from the HK airport. I only got one because they did not look good. Needless to say, I regret not getting more.... The thing that intrigues me the most was the crust. It was not just crispy and flaky, but also fluffy.... A texture we don't often get from pastries here. This had me scouring up and down the bay for fluffy crust tarts, which is why my hubby got me some here. I way prefer other tarts over these on first try. Egg Tart: these are way better than most at this price point, but I find the lard flavor too strong. This is similar in sweetness to their white tarts, with more crust to offset the sweetness. Egg White Tart: the cookie crust is not as good as that of more expensive rivals. I also find the white part too sweet. But after pairing it with savory food (like bamboo fungus and crab), I think it will go well with bird's nest and sea cucumber if you fancy expensive pairings. Curry Beef Puff Pastry - love. Fluffy flaky crust, good flavor filling. Chicken Pie: not my thing. I might like their large sponge cake too.

Ruby C.

Yelp
The birthday cakes are the best! My dad loved his 90th B-day cake. Called in for a cake in the morning. Was able to pick up in the afternoon. Made great memories with my family.
google avatar

Yelp
Love love love their egg tarts. For $1.50 each, I've been getting a dozen each weekend. The price is amazing and the flaky crust is amazing. I've been going here since a little girl and my father used to take me.
google avatar

Cindy C.

Yelp
I love love their egg tarts! The best ones in Oakland or dare I say, the best in the East Bay! I'll get it in the morning when it's pipping HOT.. the crust is so flanky!!
google avatar

Samantha G.

Yelp
I'd say this is the hidden gem bakery in Oakland Chinatown. We got here during the weekend and right after we entered this place it was so loud inside that none of us or the cashier can hear each other clearly . It was hard to make the order especially we had a pretty big order. The cashier was extremely nice. She told me to have the pineapple bun right away because it's freshly made and I actually had the bun right after I got back to the car, it was so good that might be the best pineapple bun I ever had. It was so fresh so soft so delicious. Egg tarts are what they're known for, we brought the whole box to our families and everyone just likes it.
google avatar

Katherine L.

Yelp
Egg custard tart is custardy and soft in the center like the famous Golden Gate Bakery in SF. The pastry is pretty good and buttery. The tart itself is smaller than most places but it is thicker. I enjoyed their egg tart!
google avatar

Camie K.

Yelp
Tucked away on Franklin street is this Oakland OG gem. I became a fan ever since I had a slice of my friend's beautiful three tiered sponge cake for her 10th year wedding anniversary from this bakery. We got a box of two freshly baked egg tarts, two sponge cupcakes wrapped in paper, and a scone for only $8-9 bucks. What a deal! The scone was a bit disappointing but it was still tasty, just not as flaky as my husband would've liked it; meanwhile I love the sponge cakes and the egg tarts. They were so gooey so fresh. I forgot cash but luckily they take credit cards. There is a surcharge for purchases under $10.

Helen V.

Yelp
$30 for 9inch cake and $40 for 10 inch cake. You only have to call a day in advance and they make it fresh the day of. Their egg tarts are really good too.
google avatar

Henry W.

Yelp
This little hidden gem is where I go to get my Pineapple buns, BBQ Pork buns, Cocktail buns, all things warm and bready. The prices are the best in the area. They don't take credit cards so make sure to bring cash in hand or hit up the Chase across the street. There are tables inside but most all are taken by the locals hanging for what seems the whole day. It's easy in and easy out for me. Go forth and get your yummy pink boxes!

Yelp
Here to show my support for this Asian-owned, OG Bay Area bakery! The elderly owner got pistol-whipped and robbed in Oakland just this Tuesday - 7/25. :( Let's try to support and patronize this business to prove that thugs never win. https://www.instagram.com/reel/CvNqb6LNn2h/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

Yelp
Cute little spot. Stone's throw distance from Chinatown we wandered here after dim sum to grab some things for later. Pretty good variety for the shop. One thing we learned, even if it isn't in the glass there's probably egg tarts there. They were on the rack behind the ladies helping us out. I felt quite the noob asking about them and not seeing at least a good three racks full right behind. Glad I had asked though since that's what we were really craving at the time. Quite good and very flaky crust which was nice, and without any crazy lines to wait in which was great. We'll definitely pop in again sometime to grab some to go again when in the area.
google avatar

Bonnie S.

Yelp
The egg tarts....literally the flakiest one in the bay! The custard is not too sweet and the crust is so well done. We would come and get a few; pop them back in the toaster and they're just incredible. Cash only. We've tried other things and they're ok but there are definitely better places for HK style baked goods (e.g. buns could be fluffier, fillings could be a bit better). But this will definitely be our go-to place for egg tarts.
google avatar

Inverleith F.

Yelp
Just another reminder to folks that egg tarts from Ruby King are still my favorite. Hubby took my mom to Chinatown where she picked up a box of six egg tarts for me and six for her. Being nicely boxed up in one box for us to take to the last baseball game this year at the Coliseum we took them right in. They were still slightly warm when I cracked open the box in the 4th inning. Truly my favorite due to the layers of flakey pastry and creamy filling. Support the local businesses!! Oakland Chinatown is hurting like so many other businesses.
google avatar

Sandra K.

Yelp
Seriously best best Dan Tat in the Bay Area. Have I tried the infamous Golden Gate? Yes. Ruby king is still my favorite. The 1000 layer crust is crispy and flaky. The custard is perfect. Best if eaten warm but if you order a dozen to bring home, stick it in the toaster oven and it'll crispy right back up (if you don't eat it that day). CAKE! Our other favorite. Nothing fancy, just good good stuff! If my mom is free to make a Chinatown run, we get the big round cake for every family birthday celebration. We even ordered it for her 70th bday. The cake is spongey, the cream is not too sweet. Fresh fruits is the way to go, usually strawberry. It bright and happy here. It's a hangout for older Asians here. They seem so happy hanging out and chatting away. #goodvibes

Yelp
Great HK egg tarts here and pricing is cheaper than the more famous counterparts. It's been a while since I've had GGB, so I can't comment on how it compares, but I enjoyed the flavor of Ruby King's custard and the flaky, buttery layers. If you don't get a fresh one, I recommend reheating in the microwave. Other than the egg tart, my favorite thing here was the curry beef puff! Loved the curry filling and extra flaky pastry. I thought the filling ratio was good - did not feel like they were skimping. BBQ pork bun was also solid. Cash only.

Yelp
Same good food! Closed on Tuesday now. They also accept credit cards and apple pay now. Amazing.

Yelp
When the cost of production increases, you have choices to make. You can raise prices, or slightly reduce ingredients. I was in Oakland Chinatown the other day, and happen to walk by the Ruby King Bakery. I saw only one person being served, so I popped in to see what they had. It was Sunday afternoon, so there was a limited selection. I asked for baked pork buns, curry beef puffed pastries, and butterfly cookies. Everything was priced at or less than $1.90 each, so prices were kept under the $2.00 mark. Ok, so I get my pink box home, and check out my haul. - Butterfly Cookies: Crispy, flaky, not too sweet large cookie. There's no sugary glaze. - Curry Beef Puff Pastry: Flaky puff pastry with a nice curry flavor and filling. It brought back some nice memories of visits to old SF Chinatown. - Pork Buns: Here's where you lost a star. The pork buns have less meat filling than before. When you eat one, at some point you're just eating alot of bread. I thought maybe it was just one. But no, I tore another bun apart and it revealed a smaller amount of meat filling. I think eventually they have to raise prices. Ruby King Bakery has been around for awhile, and it has a loyal customer base. People love their egg tarts. This experience won't stop me from returning, but I don't have to buy Chinese baked goods. --------------------------------------------- FYI- Covid policy: Masks optional but preferred inside. No masks worn by customers in cafe. Plastic shield at counter, and staff were wearing masks. I'd say 99% of the people in Chinatown were wearing masks.

Yelp
As a child, I remember coming to Ruby King everyday. For decades, our whole family has loved their egg tarts, lotus paste pastries, beef curry puffs, chicken pies, and giant sponge cakes (so, so fluffy and soft). Ruby King is the quintessential Chinese bakery in Chinatown. We've long since moved out of the area, but Ruby King holds a permanent place forever in our hearts. We frequently make the drive to Oakland just to pick up our favorites.

Yelp
I scream for egg tarts!!! (That's how the jingle goes, right?) The egg tarts look pretty good here so I decided to make a visit. Got a dozen of them as well as a few items from the display case (egg tarts are behind the display case, gotta ask for them specifically). Egg tart evaluation: flexible, flaky crust of countless layers? Check. Melt-in-your-mouth custard center? Check. Taste? The taste of the lard from the crust was kinda noticeable. Also, some of the egg tarts did have a slight oily scrambled-egg taste; nit-picky point on this one but it's there. Overall, not the best egg tarts that I've had but pretty darn close. As I mentioned earlier, I did get additional treats. They were okay. The cream in/on the bird's nest tasted just salty and the jam on top was too thick. The pork in the BBQ pork puff tasted kinda old. The filling in the curry beef puff was very flavorful.....maybe a bit too flavorful (I enjoyed it a lot when biting on the edge of the puff but heading towards the center the filling became too rich/sweet in a great amount). Still, very much worth a stop here especially if you're craving for some egg tarts! *Cash only!* Was super easy to find parking along 7th Street on a Sunday morning.

Yelp
Ruby king for the Chinese pastry win! Got a couple bbq pork buns, curry buns, egg tarts, and Mexican buns! All for $18.50! Service is great.

Yelp
Thier pastries are good and fresh. The inside is clean, nothing fancy but gives a nice Chinatown vibe.

Yelp
Alas, pandemic woes have hit every food business. Price increase, quality decrease. Ruby King was out of egg tarts on Sat 4pm, so went with classic curry beef puffs. Came home and found out it's mostly dough now, the beef's been reduced by half the amount. Tear. Out of curiosity, friends bought the last birds nest in the display case. Turns out it's a mini Chinese style sponge cake, not too sweet. Good deal at $1.50.

Yelp
Found this place looking online as I'm sure there are a lot of options in Oakland Chinatown. We came here specifically for the cocktail buns and egg custards. Coming in on a Sunday afternoon around 4:30, there were fortunately a lot of items left. I also decided on a curry beef bun. First, the curry beef bun was excellent. It was crispy on the outside, and filled with savory beef on the inside. The curry wasnt overpowering which was nice and the overall pastry was a good size. The cocktail bun was a bit doughy for my liking, but it had a nice sweet custard filling. The real star of the show was the egg custards. They were so nice and flaky and you can see multiple layers. The layers are especially impressive because you know the folding that was involved and baking to perfection thats needed. We ended with 6 cocktails, 6 custards, and 1 curry beef which set me back around $19. Service was friendly and the place has a few parking spots in front. I would definitely consider coming back for more goodness.

Yelp
Another of my favorites Chinese bakeries - hk style in Oakland Chinatown. We grew up going here every weekend with family so definitely is a place that we love to support. Same family runs the place for at least the past 15 plus years or more. They have a delicious assortment including pineapple buns- both plain and filled with red bean, egg custard, or taro. This is my go to place for the coconut tarts and the curry beef tarts. Price has gone up over the years, but I think it's in line with prices going up everywhere and still reasonable prices overall compared to sf or peninsula/South Bay. The butterfly pastry - aka palmier- is also one of my favorites here.

Yelp
Pretty good prices for custard tarts here and smaller lines without the freshness or quality of what they sell being compromised. Service is prompt and friendly. I only come here for the custard tarts which as of 2/24/2022 cost $1.25/each. Don't be worried about how filthy the block is which surrounds this establishment. The custard tarts are fresh and clean.

Yelp
Went there an hour before they closed, all the egg tarts were sold out. Got a taro bun instead, the crust on the top wasn't the best I have had but I liked the taro fillings in it, good flavor of taro in it and not too sweet. Cash only.

Yelp
Went for gae Mae bao (coconut buns) They were fresh, warm, and delicious Staff was friendly and spoke English $10 credit card minimum, so we bought 8 :)

Yelp
I was born and raised in Oakland. As a child my parents always got their birthday and holiday cakes from here. Just love the sponge cake with fruit on them. Great cakes if you don't like overly sweet ones. My go to item now when I'm near Oakland is the #5 rolls. They are slightly sweet and I love them for breakfast or a snack. My daughter and her children love the pineapple buns. , even her husband who lived on Maui and usually hates pineapple anything because he used to work in the fields as a teen.

Yelp
Pretty much a staple for Oakland Chinatown. Your only gripe will be standing in the occasional line. Can't go wrong with the BBQ Pork Buns, Pork Puffs and their Egg Tarts. I haven't dwelled too much in the menu other than that. But based off those three, it's a safe bet to say everything is good on the menu. Please note, this establishment is CASH ONLY. But not too expensive and you can easily walk out with one good pastry under $2.

Yelp
Really good egg tarts...yellow egg with flaky crust or milky white with cookie crust! Buns were okay too! Only complaints are the cigarette smells in part of the bakery, which may be coming right outside. Lots of older men sitting around as this seems to be the spot for them to hang out.

Yelp
We did a bulk order with them for egg tarts. They were on time and delicious, and we received rave review from our guests!

Yelp
It's hard to find freshly made, good tasting mooncakes in the bay area. The mooncakes in Ruby King come with thin, glowing skin, beautifully stamped with its name on top, very balanced in flavor (not too sweet or oily). The pale yolk seems a bit dry. The bakery offers the typical moon pies but not the exotic ones like the other shop steps away but taste wise there is no comparison. The white lotus paste mooncake seems to offer a more sophisticated taste versus its yellow lotus paste sibling. Price is high but competitive against typical staled mooncakes of similar quality in supermarkets.
