"Ruby’s structure had to be knocked down to construct Sip Pho, because it was in 'too poor condition to be salvaged,' according to the release. Ruby’s owner Pat Mares closed the barbecue restaurant after 30 years of service in February 2018, because it was difficult to keep the business going." - Nadia Chaudhury

"Ruby’s BBQ, the campus barbecue joint (not to be confused with Austin mini-barbecue chain Rudy’s Bar-B-Q) on West 29th Street, is closing, as reported by Chronicle. A Ruby’s staffer confirmed the impending shutter, though there is no exact last date as of yet. She said it might be on Tuesday, February 20, but that’s not set in stone. Update, February 14: Ruby’s last day will be on Saturday, February 17. Along with the usual barbecue staples of brisket, ribs, smoked chicken, and turkey, Ruby’s also emphasized Cajun cuisine like gumbo, crawfish etouffee, and all sorts of jambalaya, along with ham, tacos, chili, and salads. Everything at the nearly-30-year-old restaurant was served counter-service-style at affordable prices. Chronicle reported that owner Pat Mares decided to close the restaurant because the “Austin scene and market has changed significantly,” which meant it was “difficult to do business as a small operator” with the growing restaurant scene, higher cost of operating, and lack of staff. Mares teased that whatever taking over Ruby’s location on West 29th Street is going to be a new restaurant. Mares opened Ruby’s BBQ in 1988, among the tail-end of the older generation of Austin-area barbecue joints, like Iron Works BBQ and Salt Lick." - Nadia Chaudhury

Amazing decor, atmosphere, service, and most importantly food. The guy who took our orders, David, is super rad! Everyone who works here seems really friendly. Jared is really rad too! Any time I come to Austin I will definitely be stopping here. Besides, the prices are completely reasonable and the food came out really fast!

A nice, cozy and rustic BBQ joint. The brisket is smoked to perfection. The staff is very friendly and attentive. It's well cooled with outdoor seating available, too.

This divey hole-in-the-wall is the best. I had the brisket which was outstanding. The homemade pickles were sublime and the staff is friendly and helpful. Go here.

Excellent food, excellent service! We ordered a smoked turkey for thanksgiving. It was ready and delicious as planned. When we went to pick it up, they were quick to point out their other specials and were very friendly and helpful. We bought brisket and ribs as well. Everything was fantastic. The turkey had instructions to heat it up and was well packaged. The ribs were very flavorful and tender and the brisket was smoky juicy heaven! So many times I have had dried up brisket with great flavor. Our order came with sauce (YUM!), onions, and some of the best pickles we have had in a very long time.

I loved this place. They had the best and most unique chopped beef I’ve ever eaten. It will be missed.

They took care of a huge order on short notice. Very kind of them. However, I believe owner said he may be closing his doors for good. 😬

Got the beef ribs at 9:48pm. They were barely eatable. The potato salad and ice tea were good. I told them I wasn't happy with the ribs, and they recommend the brisket. They gave me a small portion of brisket on the house. The brisket is much better. It's not tasty but it's very serviceable with the right sauce. Definitely a last resort type place. There aren't many open as late as they are.
