"Diane Abbott seems to be generally enamoured by Stoke Newington Church Street, but that really isn’t surprising considering she has been the Member of Parliament for Hackney North and Stoke Newington since 1987. Rudie’s, which serves Jamaican food, in Stokey has apparently been her favourite since it opened, where rum and coke is the drink of her choice. That is when M&S Mojitos don’t make the cut. She also occasionally frequents Peppers & Spice in Islington when she wants a West Indian takeaway of jerk chicken, rice and peas." - Adam Coghlan, Apoorva Sripathi

"When Rudie’s unveiled its deep green and gold exterior just north of Kingsland road, its name immediately exploded on to the east London food scene. After extensive research in Jamaica, Rudie’s mix of delicious Jamaican classics and playful creations still thrills Dalston regulars and visitors from across the city." - Riaz Phillips

A few weeks back I was invited to Rudie’s to try out their new Sunday roast menu and boy was I in for a treat! Just the décor alone will make you feel as if you have been transported to Jamaica. With posters of official street parties, carnivals and upcoming events in Jamaica placed on the walls and a selection of the finest Jamaican rums at the bar. Although I was there to try out their Sunday roast, Rudie’s have a huge selection of choice on their menu. From small plates to plantain bowls jerk chicken, seafood, and yard classics. For starters, I ordered the crispy calamari, which is deep fried in seasoned polenta. I was expecting the calamari to have a hint of spice to it, as I was in a Jamaican restaurant, but it was neutral. TIP: Squeezing the lemon all over the Calamari brings out the flavour. I wanted to try out some of the smaller plates as starters, to taste what else Rudie’s serve beside their Sunday roast. I also choose the pulled pork balls, which are spicy deep fried jerk pork balls, served with a spicy mayo. Now, this had spice! The pulled pork is shredded inside and is full of smoked jerk flavour. The spicy mayo adds as a great accompaniment and found myself smothering the balls with this sauce. Sunday roast The Sunday roast is served with whole chicken crispy roast yams, squash, sweet corns, bakes and rum gravy, which is a traditional Jamaican style roast. Rudie’s roast is perfect for sharing between two people. The chicken is marinated in authentic Jerk rub, where the chef places the herbs underneath the skin to boost the flavour. TIP: I loved drenching my chicken roast in the rum gravy for extra flavour. For me, the bakes were my favourite and tasted better when they were soaked in the gravy. The roast left me very fulfilled and satisfied as it was undoubtedly filling. I would suggest sharing between two to three people, as the portions are large, and add rice and peas to the roast, as it is an accompaniment. I was a little disappointed that the roast was not jerked but upon speaking to the chef Vernon Samuels. He explained that Rudie’s serve many Jerk style dishes and they wanted to offer a plain roast with a hint of Jamaican influence. Samuel’s gave me a tour of Rudie’s authentic drums where they make the Jerk chicken and explained how Rudie’s smoke their Jerk dishes, giving their poultry a genuine jerk taste. I was able to sample some of their Jamaican jerk chicken, which is cooked to perfection and is a reminder of authentic Jamaican cuisine. Now, what is a Jamaican restaurant if rum is not involved? Be prepared as Rudie’s have a fine selection of Rum and Rum cocktails. My cocktail of choice was Jamaica Nice, which is a fruity boozy smoothie, which consists of Almond syrup, lime, nectarine, pineapple, Appleton rum and coconut rum. Sitting at the window, with the sun shining on my eyes, and beating down on my skin, I was imagining that I had been swept away to the Jamaica for that moment, as the cocktail taste like your on holiday in the islands. This cocktail is sweet!

Good Ja' Love. A classy approach to Jamaican food. Large selection of drinks. Perfect restaurant for some bites with friends or a date. Price budget works out about 40quid for two w/ a drink. Would definitely go back

The food isn't authentic Caribbean food. Some dishes were OVER flavoursome, whereas - some were bland. Not much of a variety in dishes, especially for vegetarians. I feel as if it's over priced. However, the service is good, not outstanding - due to the fact that we had to wait for a few dishes that didn't get put through with our order. On the plus side, when the food came to the table it was hot.

Great food, but quite a small venue. We experienced a few issues with the menu as it was a large party and we were expected to order the set menu without being informed when booking. It was resolved eventually but it seems the service suffered a little.

My first visit, but I definitely will return, cool venue, so diverse! There were groups of friends, couples holding hands, couples from the LGBT community, all races, a truly beautiful scene all with sweet food and great music. I had the set menu, which was totally delicious. Cant wait to return.

Yelp
This is the worst Jamaican restaurant I've visited in London, and I've ate at a good many Jamaican cuisine across the city. The food was average. The service was mediocre. They're so rude. I couldn't believe it when our waitress kicked us off our table while we were still eating because of some ridiculous pre-booked policy they enforce. They literally rushed my small party of six off the table while handing me a bill of over £300. So unprofessional. Moreover, what kind of a Jamaican restaurant doesn't serve oxtail on the menu? Rudy's. Lastly, their alcoholic drinks taste like koolaid. I had to ask for an extra shot to get some kind of a buzz. If I wanted a smoothie I'd had ordered one. But I wanted alcohol. They couldn't pay me to eat in that pathetic joint again.

Yelp
I have two words for this Caribbean restaurant : "Yeah Mon"! It's one of those restaurants that's pretty easy to overlook from the outside and I ended up here by chance, but I'm so glad I did. I'm half Jamaican and a foodie so I was coming into this Caribbean restaurant with fairly high standards. I also happened to be hungry so my friend and I ended up ordering a variety of dishes (ackee and salt fish, saltfish fritters, the best sweet potato fries I've ever had etc.) and every single one was well presented, delicious and, most importantly, pretty authentic-tasting! I also like the fact that they cook in front of you (so less chance of anything dodgy finding its way into your food!) But it wasn't just the food that made this restaurant a cool place, the staff were engaging and friendly and the interior had a Caribbean feel to it with a wooden palm tree/light installation and chilled out reggae playing in the background. I'd definitely come back.

Yelp
Would not recommend. I ordered a half jerk chicken, rice and peas, plantain, and some pork ribs. There was nothing Jerk about the chicken - flavourless and dry. I got a tiny pot of what seemed like ketchup to pour over my half chicken, but not even enough sauce for a wing. Plantain was also dry. Rice and Peas watery, and the pork ribs may as well have just been ribs. Can't believe I actually paid money for this. My advice would be to go down Gillett Square or Bradbury Street where there are LOADS of tiny independent Caribbean and African food places that give you quality jerk food.

Yelp
Friendly staff, beautiful furniture and AMAZING cocktails! We had two Jamaican Mule and I don't think I can ever live without them anymore. A new standard for cocktails. Also, try their crisps with homemade ketchup, definitely worth their price...oh wait, they are less than £2!

Yelp
Came here this week, food was horrible.Chicken was dry. Cocktails were unrefined. Came here last year and was way better. Food has gone downhill for some reason, better going to Nando's then here for a fraction of the cost.

Yelp
Lovely restaurant. Ate here with my friend and had the Yeah Man! Platter. Outstanding food and ambience, great staff and fantastic signature cocktails too. A great addition to the area.

Yelp
Amazing food and great service. Jerk Chicken Roti wrap and Mac N Cheese are the best.
