Runaway Cow

I think I just found my new favorite ice cream spot! I am so impressed with this place. Tried them for the first time today, I got a caramel apple, apple cider biscoff sundae and it was divine! The ice cream was so flavorful and creamy! So hard to believe it was vegan but that’s what made it even better! I got to also talk to the owner who was super cool. I learned she’s a CPS teacher and the shop is an ode to Dairy Queen - which holds a special place in my heart. There’s only two weeks left until they close for the summer and I’m making it a point to make another visit before then and after that, I’ll be counting down until they’re open again. Get there!

Being a South Side vegan isn’t as difficult as one might think! Especially when you have places like Runaway Cow. I’ve been a frequenter of this fine ice cream establishment since opening day. The ice cream is amazing, the treats are top notch, and the staff is awesome! They have even started selling food such as “beef” sandwiches, Chicago style hot dogs, and today, I got “The Vito” (a tasty Italian sub) with all the fixings. So happy that this place exists and that it’s on the South Side. I’d recommend a Snow Storm with your fav ice cream add-ins.

Third time returning to Runaway Cow. Incredibly kind staff, clean restaurant, and I think they have a great brand. Downside: we don’t really care for the ice cream. Unfortunately we feel as though the ice cream is too icy and much too sweet. It’s extremely sugary. We got an ice cream cake the last time we visited and were disappointed by the iciness of the ice cream as well. Sadly, the ice cream just does not have a good flavor. You would not want to eat it plain, it really depends on the toppings mixed in. We got a strawberry shortcake sundae before and it was so incredibly sweet and sugary that it was inedible. We loved their old food truck and we want to love this place too! Sadly, it just does not have a good flavor. Would much rather just get a pint of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream from the grocery store. We gave it three honest attempts to impress us, but sadly it just doesn’t work. Also it is quite expensive. We love that there is this vegan option available, but it just isn’t for us.

This was well worth a 30 minute ride across town. The store is adorable, clean, and bright. The owner was there and she was kind and patient as we figured out what to order. This is a vegan treat like no other spot I've ever been to. If you ate Dairy Queen blizzards as a kid, this is for you. We got the monthly special Take 5 snowstorm and the flavors were incredible. Maybe one the best mixtures of flavors I've ever had. We had a second one with "snickers" and "twix." My teeth were full of caramel and it was worth every bite. Then we got the choco-taco which is huge. It is homemade and simply delicious. I plan to go back whenever I am in town. Wow!

Tried the cappuccino major....delicious. it's like a blizzard from DQ, concrete from Andy's or McFlurry from McD's. Only downside melts faster than the 3 mentioned, probably because it's made out of oat milk. But the flavor is on point! The rest of the group had a small vanilla in a gluten free cone, a pumpkin pie snowstorm which tasted just like pumpkin pie and a medium pistachio flavor soft serve (flavor of the week)

Made the trek all the way from Rogers Park for this and it was totally worth it! All the classics and fun twists too! I got a chili dog and a moose tracks sundae. The prices were also very good!

Took the kiddos out for a sweet treat and Runaway Cow was a HIT! The lady at the front counter was super helpful and gave us a great rundown of how things work, making it easy to find exactly what we wanted. Fair prices, friendly service, and a fun experience for the kids. We'll definitely be back! Highly recommend!

Runaway Cow is officially my favorite ice cream shop in the Chicago. What makes them stand out is that all their soft serves, shakes, and sundaes are made with oat milk, resulting in a slightly nuttier and extremely smooth flavor. They offer a wide variety of specialty and seasonal flavors (like the PB&J soft serve pictured) in the warmer months. The shop has very little seating if any, but there are benches right outside and Palmisano Park is just a short walk away. It's locally-owned and the owners are extremely friendly. Runaway Cow is just a lovely local ice cream shop and definitely worth a shot if you're in Bridgeport!

So nice that they're open til 10 even on weeknights. When we were there, they were dealing with replacing a freezer and were super apologetic about it despite not needing to be - not sure if it was the owners or staff, but they seemed really invested in our experience which I really appreciate! For ordering, I didn't realize it's all soft serve, no ice cream which I was a little disappointed by and I also wish they had a few more flavor options. However, they did a good job of making up for it with the candy add ins. I went with the Biscoff cookie snowstorm (like a DQ blizzard) and really my only complaint is I wish they had a smaller size option just because it was more than I wanted + price-wise more than I had expected to spend. Overall so glad to have this dairy free ice cream option for those who are intolerant or vegan!

Vegan alert! New business alert! Wowzer. Definitely amazed by their options and selections. The staff were quick and knowledgable about their menu. They move in rhythm and with efficiency. Kudos there for sure. I chose to go with the strawberry shortcake sundae and it wasn't a miss. Everything include the vanilla cake slice used was vegan. Not too sweet but not bland. I believe for vegan items they definitely did their thang and I know for sure I'm going to return. I'm just surprised how many people don't know about this gem!

As 1st timers, we highly recommend it! Both desserts were made perfectly!!! Only minor issue is that we both felt the quantities were too much ... of DELICIOUSNESS!!! So we finished them! The service was quick & efficient! We sat on the benches they had outside to enjoy their vegan ice cream!

It's exciting to have an all vegan ice cream shop with such a variety. The oat-based ice cream was simply overly sweet. We each only had a few bites of our desserts, but didn't finish most of it. Hopefully, they reformulate the base a bit. I don't for see us visiting again any time soon. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable of their menu offerings.

Cutest little shop with friendly owners and amazing vegan soft serve. They make a lot of their mix-ins in house, and sell vegan desserts and candy bars as well. I ordered a medium cone with chocolate/vanilla and sprinkles, and it was massive. I love soft serve, and this could have easily fooled me as regular ice cream. So good! This place is definitely worth a stop if you're in the neighborhood, or a special trip if you're not. They had a sign up counting down to closing for the season at the end of October though, so hurry!

Their new hot food is delicious! The beef sandwich with mild peppers dipped in juice was so filling and yummy. Such a classic! This place is quickly becoming a Chicago staple

Exactly what the name say "Runaway Cow", I can finally eat vegan base ice cream. Located in Bridgeport and not far from the ball park, I usually come and get my treat. Average cost is under $10, I was able to feed my tummy and lite on my wallet. Plenty of street parking without meters. Highly recommend.

This is a new neighborhood ice cream shop in Bridgeport, and it's delicious! I grew up drinking fountain Green River soda at my local public pool in the summers, and they have Green River floats here! A true nostalgic delight. My kids (ages 11 and 9) also loved it. The ice cream tastes the same, if not better than the dairy counterpart. (There is a reason why oat milk creamer is amazing in coffee. It just works.). Everyone (vegans, lactose intolerant friends and ice cream lovers) can unite here and enjoy a tasty summer treat. One of the owners has worked in the ice cream business for over 2 decades, and her experience shows. She is also one of the kindest people on the planet. My kids won't stop asking to go back! 10/10

Fist time I've ever had "good" vegan treats. In my experience vegan desserts are terrible however there's an exception to every rule & that's exactly what runaway cow was. An assortment of flavors & toppings to choose from to say the least & the cherry on top (double entendre) is the price. I believe we spent under $10 for two items which is mind boggling these days.

It's amazing to see more vegan places opening up in this neighborhood. We used to have to travel to north side or downtown to find good vegan spots. It's a great little spot, luckily walkable from our place. If you are planning to drive there, there are places to pull up in front of the store, and it hasn't been difficult to find parking in my experience. They don't have seating (yet!), but I think the neighborhood has plenty of parks and whatnot near them so you can enjoy your little treat on a bench while being outdoors. The items themselves are great, a perfect pick me up after work or at the end of your week. The people there are super nice! I will say, if you're going to order anything other than a cone, some of those are definitely shareable sizes. Just got the Oreo Brownie Treat, and had to share it. It was so good though!

Had a great time stopping in this vegan ice cream shop during a busy workday. I've been dairy-free for eight years and it was great to visit a place where I could eat basically everything on the menu (except for anything that also included gluten). The people who made our ice cream choices were lovely. I got a moose tracks sundae and my friend got one of the blended Blizzard-like treats. They were a great size for the price and tasted amazing--just like real dairy soft serve! Took off one star because ambiance/space could use some upgrading. In the cold cases, there were t-shirts and handwritten signs instead of ice cream or toppings. It was hard to know/understand what was available to order. And the bright lime green was overwhelming. I'd love to see this place take out the cold coolers and put some seating inside for super hot days. I also saw a sign noting they were preparing to offer hot food but I think that'd be a miss. They specialize so amazingly in ice cream and shakes that I think hot food would detract from their mission. Overall would definitely come back. But I wish they'd dig even deeper into exclusively providing amazing vegan desserts!

First of all, finally a non dairy ice cream place! By the way... I manifested this place so y'all are welcome... the joint is clean, inviting, and very friendly staff. Love the selections of ice cream. I selected my favorite, strawberry milkshake. It was so flavorful and it wasn't hard to slurp like other places. My little boy had a vanilla ice cream cone, he loved it especially because they placed some cute candy eye balls on it. My husband had the oat milk milkshake and he also enjoyed it. Gave it two thumbs up and he's not a fan of vegan ice cream. I definitely recommend this place to anyone that wants to cool off and enjoy a summer dessert. My fam and I will definitely be going back to try other flavors. Welcome to Bridgeport guys!!

So happy to see vegan love on the south side of Chicago!!! I had a house made waffle bowl dipped in chocolate with their own peanut butter cups. O M G!!! Get here asap. You will find something delicious for everyone even your persnickety non-vegan friends.

Such a treat to have another vegan soft serve spot in Chicago! Their menu is HUGE and has endless options ranging from traditional sundaes to newer flavors. The owner was incredibly welcoming & nice, I also loved that they had a section of take home goods too--I especially loved the vegan chocolate bar alternatives. Will definitely be back!

Full vegan sweets! I have never known about vegan candy bar dupes until this place. They literally have them on display (snickers, heath, Twix, etc but vegan) also we ordered cherries on our sundae which the person forgot-- so we just asked and they gave us a whole cup full :D really sweet people

Great price and taste. Especially for plant based ice cream. Amazing. I think if they added chairs and a table outside, it would seal the deal. Would love for a place to sit outside and enjoy some sweets.

This place is awesome!! I haven't had great experiences at Vegan restaurants so I was a little iffy at first. But go/ you'll love it! I couldn't even tell it was dairy free and they have so many cool options! I hope this place does great! They are so helpful, prices are reasonable and parking is easy to find.

Staff was very friendly and was able to explain all food and products they had. Helps that everything tasted really good too.

Runaway Cow is a welcome addition to my neighborhood. I love it. I have brought friends there who are not vegan or veg and they loved it, too. Their classics are the best. I have missed hot fudge and avoid most because of high fructose corn syrup. Theirs passes my taste buds test. Friendly staff, too! Runaway Cow is my happy place.

Some of the best soft serve I've ever had! I can't even believe it's vegan. The texture is unbelievably smooth and creamy. The flavor is rich yet balanced with the perfect amount of sweetness. I loved the smores and strawberry cheesecake flavors !

My new favorite place!!! Who doesn't love a good ice cream cone!! I had no idea this place was vegan, tried it and it tastes JUST LIKE traditional ice cream!!! I'm soo happy you came into my life Runaway Cow!!

Stopped by for the first time and got to try their mango soft serve. It was so delicious! The texture and taste was so good it's hard to believe it's oat milk based. Will be coming often for sure! Glad to have a lactose free ice cream place in the neighborhood.

I have been to Runaway Cow twice now (in the past week) with my girlfriend and it was amazing!! I am not vegan but I can confidently say this is some of the best ice cream I've ever had! The banana pudding snowstorm was especially delicious! This place is a 10 minute drive from us so we will definitely become regulars!!

Love this addition to the neighborhood! I tried a vanilla malt and actually loved the big scoop of ice cream they topped it off with- def recommend! Will be back to try out other items!
