New favorite Japanese cuisine meal unlocked...
Whenever I go to Miyabi, I always struggle with whether or not to order sushi. See their sushi is great and they definitely use premium fish and know what they're doing with it but it's such a challenge on the value side knowing what can be had at one of Reno's more traditional, all you can eat places.
That said, sushi here is always a good idea, and we always end up with at least one or two of their platters on the table. Those are for my wife and children who really enjoy their Nigiri and roles but for me, I'm always left looking for something a little bit more so on the last few visits, I've tried to scope out more of the menu and when we were in recently, I ordered something new to me and I think it might be my go to for the future.
Trust me when I say you need to order the Hamachi Kama with a side order of their tempura.
The Kama is grilled to perfection. Super succulent nicely glazed, and exceptionally meaty, the collar of the hamachi is a meal unto itself. Don't share it because as soon as you let somebody try to bite, they're gonna ask you for the rest of it. It is a little work to eat, but it is well worth the effort and don't skip the skin because it is perfectly crispy crunchy and just like a potato chip.
The tempura here is pretty good and I really like the variety of veggies they include in the set. That said, Tempura is an art form in Japan and it's not done to the same level in the states. In Japan, you can expect wispy and light battering that gives way to perfectly cooked and tender vegetables or seafood, and though it's clear they're at a different level than you'd find in most places, and while their version is good, the batter is a bit heavier and crunchier than I was hoping and the shrimp was the most disappointing, surrounded by a lot of batter.
But this combo together is nothing short of perfection and I am already craving a return visit for this exact thing again.
