Ramen, curries, takoyaki, and rice bowls with rich broth

"Isshindo had big shoes to fill, taking over the space of the beloved Pikaichi at Super 88. (Fortunately, Pikaichi didn’t close for good; it relocated to Medford, and it remains among the area’s best ramen spots — see more details above.) But in its first few years — it opened in 2019 — Isshindo has hit the ground running, impressing with its range of broth offerings, from the creamy and rich tonkotsu (pork bone broth) to the tangy shio to the umami-forward miso, there’s a bowl for every taste." - Erika Adams, Valerie Li Stack, Eater Staff

"The ramen shop Pikaichi broke hearts when it departed Allston for Medford a couple years back, but fortunately another good ramen shop moved into the former Pikaichi space at Super 88: Isshindo. Serving lunch and dinner daily, Isshindo is delivering dishes such as spicy miso ramen, a crispy chicken rice bowl, and takoyaki. Order: Chowbus / Grubhub" - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

"A second visit rewarded me with a very fine bowl: the tonkotsu broth was silky with the right salty-funky balance, the ajitama egg had a just-set-yet-oozing yolk, the pork char siu nearly melted on my tongue, and the noodles had ideal spring." - Rachel Leah Blumenthal

"Tucked into Super 88 at 1 Brighton Ave., I visited Isshindo Ramen (tagline: “ramen with a soul”), which officially opened this week to fill the space left when beloved Pikaichi shuttered in November 2017. I found that Isshindo specializes in tonkotsu ramen but also offers miso- and tomato-based broths, and the menu includes dumplings, seaweed salad, takoyaki, fried chicken, and rice bowls; it doesn’t have a liquor license, so don’t expect to wash that salty broth down with a beer. The shop is set apart from Super 88’s main food court and is open for lunch and dinner daily." - Terrence Doyle

"Poised to open in a former ramen-shop unit at 1 Brighton Ave., the forthcoming ramen concept has posted new signage and a hiring notice on the door. State filings list Wei Lin as the person behind the business, and that name is also linked to another restaurant in Beverly, though it's unclear whether it's the same individual. The unit sits inside a larger market food-hall environment but is set apart from the main food court." - Terrence Doyle
