"Ordering from the pastry counter at Veniero’s, a classic Italian bakery that’s been in the East Village since 1894, is intimidating. Each pastry looks better than the next one, and choosing between cannoli and pignoli can make you sweat like a pilates class. But let us submit their italian-style cheesecake. It’s subtly sweet with whipped ricotta and an amaretto flavor, slightly grainy, has a crumbly pastry crust, and is sneakily a great breakfast item, paired with a cup of coffee." - molly fitzpatrick, will hartman, bryan kim
"Founded in 1894 by Antonio Veniero, this bakery started as a pool hall with an Italian coffee bar before pastries eventually won out. Jam-packed with fin-de-siecle Old World charm, one room is made up of glass display cases filled with dozens of pastries, cookies, and tarts; the other is a comfy dining room where long-time customers linger over booze-spiked cups of espresso and a cannoli or wedge of spumoni. It’s special in those awkward hours, before dinner when you’re not sure what to do with yourself." - Robert Sietsema

"A New York City institution offering time-intensive, festive Italian rainbow cookies in boxed orders — a classic, celebratory holiday treat." - Monica Burton

"You’ll see a big “1894” neon sign in front of this place. We won’t make you do any math and just tell you that this Italian bakery in the East Village has been around a long time. The colorful display cases of pastries and gelato will make you feel like your 10-year old self again. Our favorite thing to get is a cream-filled, flaky lobster tail pastry with a double espresso. If you come when there’s a lot of people, be sure to grab a ticket first. That way, your number will be called by the time you figure out exactly what you want to get (which won’t be easy)." - kenny yang
