The Best Things to Eat at Caribbean Carnival Celebrations | Eater

"On this Jamaican beach visitors find steamed fish, okra, and bammy (cassava flatbread). Mannish water, a hearty soup made with goat tripe, can be a hangover cure or a way to kickstart the day if you get yours spiked with white rum. You can always hit up a cookshop for oxtail, stew peas, curry goat, ackee and saltfish, and jerk too." - Shelley Worrell

"Action-packed Hellshire Beach, the easy beach choicefor many Kingston residents, islined with dozens of wooden food shacks. Aunt May’s is a solid pick for a classic Jamaican beachside meal, serving fresh fish with festival (fried dumplings) or bammy (cassava flour flatbread), lobster, and other seafood.Hellshire is particularly busy on weekends, when locals take a break from their workweek, and sees relatively few tourists, so it has an authentic Jamaican vibe like few other beaches."

Beautiful beach well-loved by locals. Off the beaten path, so you'll have fewer people sniffing you out as a tourist and bothering you like you'll find at public beaches in the touristy parts of the island. Inner tubes and more available to rent. Lots of food choices! Definitely recommend.

Good food, vibes and beautiful beach. Transportation by bus, taxis, privare car, large undesignated parking areas available. Free entrance and parking. Busier on the weekends and public holidays. Public beach.

We went on a Thursday to celebrate an anniversary and it was a pleasant experience, the staff and the welcome was genuine. We were not rushed and was told to make ourselves comfortable which we did before selecting our meal from the menu and choosing which fish crab lobster or whatever you wanted prepared to enjoy and it was well worth the wait.

Took a quick escape to Hellshire Beach, and it did not disappoint! The atmosphere was lively, and the food? Absolutely top-tier! Prendy's crayfish/conch, and fish soups were bursting with flavor 😋 We also grabbed some steamed and fried fish, paired with festivals and plantains—delicious, even if that vendor's name slipped my mind 🙃 Pro tip: Always pick your fish, watch the weighing process, and do your own calculations. Keeps things smooth! 😉

Beach is eroding fast, however it was a lovely small part of the beach and it was fun, water was clean and lots of family and children were enjoying the Christmas on the beach.

We came in December post hurricane Melissa. We stopped on the road going into the beach peppered with questions and attempts to sell us fish. The locals then wanted to follow us in to ensure we had a great time. We never got out of the car. The area was littered with trash and the locals were attempting to control us. Not worth it.

Nice chill spot. Went for the food, not really for the beach

I am very disappointed with my recent visit to Hellshire Beach. Having visited this place when I was 10 to 12 years old, the change is shocking. What used to be a wide, clear, and peaceful beach has become a cramped, dirty, and overly commercialized area. The Main Issues: Overdevelopment: The area now has about 95% buildings and businesses and only 5% beach. It feels like anyone can build whatever they want without any rules. Lack of Space & Cleanliness: The beach has shrunk significantly and is quite dirty with litter. It was so crowded that we could barely move. Parking & Security: Finding a parking spot is a nightmare. We had to be guided to a space far from the water. My father didn’t feel safe leaving the car because the area felt so chaotic. Poor Management: While there are some police driving around, there is no real order. The government needs to step in and manage the building and upkeep of this landmark.
