On the Grid : The Phillips Collection

"The Phillips Collection is an art museum founded in 1921 by Duncan and Marjorie Phillips. The collection started off with just a few family-owned paintings, and slowly expanded with the help of Duncan (a published art critic) and Marjorie (a painter)." - Friendly Design Co.

D.C.’s Best Museum Restaurants and Cafes | Eater DC

"An outpost of a stalwart Van Ness bakery sits inside America’s “First Museum of Modern Art” in Dupont, stocked with flaky pastries and crusty bread loaves. The menu showcases a baguette sandwich stuffed with ham, gruyere, Dijon, and butter, and a seasonal vegetable sandwich on a baguette; indulgent lump crab crepes with Mornay sauce, avocado toast, and multiple salad options are among expanded featured items. The sweet of the moment is a warm apple pie topped with vanilla ice cream." - Abi Newhouse

14 Best Things to Do in Washington, DC

"In a town full of museum after-hours parties, the Phillips Collection's monthly "Phillips After 5" is one of the longest-running events of its kind and still hits it out of the park. For example, a party celebrating an exhibit with French post-Impressionist artist Pierre Bonnard partners up with the Embassy of France to bring in a live band, snacks like spring vegetable galettes with edible flowers, and a floral arranging workshop." - Adele Chapin

Pioneering D.C. Bakery Bread Furst Is Coming to Dupont | Eater DC

"Housed in a red brick–framed building in Dupont Circle, the Phillips Collection (1600 21st Street NW) — America’s first museum of modern art — will host a walk-up Bread Furst cafe open to the public in early May; the museum-affiliated cafe will operate on abbreviated hours (11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesdays through Sundays) so customers can buy baked goods without paying the $16 admission to peruse Matisse and Picasso paintings. Furstenberg, a longtime member of the museum and Dupont resident, said the overture from the Phillips Collection was irresistible and that he hopes the cafe will serve both members and the surrounding community." - Tierney Plumb

"The Phillips Collection started as a humble gallery to honor a deceased father and brother in 1921, and rapidly transformed into a full-fledged modern art museum—America’s first. Set in a stately Georgian Revival brick house that was the former residence of its founder, Duncan Phillips, the museum is now home to more than 4,000 works of Impressionist and contemporary art. Different eras and artistic styles are juxtaposed and regularly rearranged to inspire new connections and conversations. Permanent collection highlights include famous masterpieces like Renoir’s Luncheon of the Boating Party and an intimate Rothko Room installation that was designed in collaboration with the artist himself."
