Museum detailing history of immigrants, artists, activists, and LGBTQ+ rights

"There is no doubt Tenderloin is the most 'interesting' neighborhood in San Francisco. If you want to know more about how Tenderloin named, who called it home, how it influenced the LGBT rights movement, this is the right stop." - Astro Studios

"A neighborhood museum presenting a new immersive play about the Compton’s Cafeteria Riot, bringing that historic trans and queer uprising to life as part of June Pride programming." - Dianne de Guzman
"Tenderloin Museum, Tenderloin by Astro Studios. There is no doubt Tenderloin is the most 'interesting' neighborhood in San Francisco. If you want to know more about how Tenderloin named, who called it home, how it influenced the LGBT rights movement, this is the right stop."

"Faced with the dilemma of dramatizing a little-known but pivotal civil-rights moment without becoming didactic, the Tenderloin Museum commissioned and produced The Compton’s Cafeteria Riot as an immersive dinner-theater project. I found the museum’s approach—led by co-creator Mark Nassar and Katie Conry (the museum’s director), who wanted audiences to feel ‘really there’—effective at creating empathy and helping people identify with the queer liberation movement. The museum enlisted co-writers Collette LeGrand and Donna Personna, longtime drag performers and Tenderloin residents whose experiences mirror those of the trans women in the story, which adds lived authenticity to the production." - Jay C. Barmann
Rooted in the neighborhood it serves, this museum spotlights jazz clubs, labor history, LGBTQ milestones, and resident stories. Covered by the San Francisco Chronicle for its planned expansion and neon collection.
