The Best New Cookbooks of Fall 2025, According to Eater Editors | Eater

"Korean Temple Cooking acts as a portal into life at Baekyangsa Temple in Jeollanam-do, roughly 150 miles from Seoul, offering an intimate window into Jeongkwan Snim’s philosophy and cooking (she was featured on Chef’s Table) and framing temple food as vegan, seasonal, and deeply contextualized — with chapters on the history of temple food, the meaning of base ingredients (tofu, rice, noodles, namul), a focus on fermentations, photography that transports you into the temple’s wooded grounds, and a glossary; the book made me want to look into a Baekyangsa temple stay." - Bettina Makalintal

Netflix’s ‘Chef’s Table’: A Guide to Restaurants Featured on the Show | Eater

"Jeong Kwan, the Zen Buddhist nun featured in Season 3 of Chef’s Table, does not cook in a restaurant. But the temple where she lives opens its doors to a limited number of visitors throughout the year. Baegyangsa takes reservations for a temple stay program called “Experience of Original Temple Food and Culture With Monk,” where a meal is part of the itinerary. The cost of this program is 150,000 KRW (approximately $134) per person. Read a full recap of Jeong Kwan’s Chef’s Table episode here." - Greg Morabito

Baegyangsa is one of those places that instantly slows your pace down in the best way. Mountains rising right behind the temple grounds, with dramatic rock faces and soft winter trees… it feels cinematic. The sky looks huge out there too. Super crisp air, super clean. You can literally feel your lungs “reset” after a few minutes walking around. Quiet, peaceful, not overly touristy. The dancheong is stunning up close. The rooflines and carved details are beautifully preserved, and the colors pop even on a cloudy day. Easy to stroll, lots of great angles for photos. The approach roads and paths feel like part of the experience, not just the way to get there. Loved my visit with my in-laws!

I recommend Baekyangsa Temple, where you can experience the beauty and tranquility of Korean temples. I visited after a long time and met many foreigners. I hope they felt peace here and left with it.

I've visited this place during autumn. The scenery is so breathtaking. Also I recommend to eat the local rice cake.

One of the top 3 most fa out Korean temples in the world, both because of its hodtoric legacy but also because of its temple food that have inspired Western chef's worldwide.

One of the biggest temples from South Jeolla Province. It's a nice place with alleys for slow walks. P.S. Revisited this temple on a rainy afternoon of April (2025) and enjoyed a quiet and relaxing time. Sometimes, going late means less or no crowded.

Is it possible to be more beautiful than here? "stunned, overwhelmed, mesmerized." I had this feeling that I'm struggling to put into words. Maybe: coming to a place like this alone is a reward for being alone - being lonely. The solitude felt even in the midst of the crowd was so intensely satisfying that... that I couldn't experience such if I had been human enough have had a family.

If you're planning a temple stay in Korea, Baekyangsa should be on your list. The view is outstanding. Try before the foliage. It might get a bit noisy with tourists when the leaves turn red and yellow.
