Old-school Cantonese hospitality—white tablecloths, deep menu, and seafood specialties—draws central Connecticut diners. Consistently well reviewed by travelers and locals, it’s a comfortable, classic experience not far from Hartford.

Sad to say that I’ve been coming to great taste for the past 10-12years and this is what it’s come down to. First of all let me start by saying for whatever reason when you go to pick up your food and don’t leave a tip, if there is a lady working she gives you the dirtiest look and will go into the kitchen momentarily and start speaking in their native language… not sure if they understand the fact that you are picking up your own food that doesn’t require a tip, maybe would be different if it was curbside pick up but seems like all the workers there are just looking for that tip which wasn’t like that before, especially when the older gentlemen would great you by the door he was the best! Always a smile and wished you a great day. Secondly I always order the same boneless spare rib with rice and for my wife general tso chicken with the lo mein combo, the noodles were the consistency of a rubber band, and much darker in color than normal which indicates they are using the same oil over and over to cook, the ribs were OK, the general chicken was very chewy… more chewy than normal. Only real good thing about the meal was the rice. We also ordered crab Rangoon, now before I even get into it let me start off by saying everyone understand this days economy and everything has gone up, but the amount they charge for 6 crab Rangoon you would think they come DECENTLY stuffed!? Well you’re wrong! Idk if it was a bad batch but there was literally BARLEY ANY stuffing in there it felt more like I was eating a friend dough than crab Rangoon. I hate to say but this is not the same great taste it was 10years ago. Maybe eating in they give you better, fresher food but for take out I don’t recommend for the simple fact that the past 10times we’ve gotten take out each time disappointed between the staff looking at you funny because you don’t tip on a pickup order to the food being below average.

My absolute favorite Chinese restaurant! I have been coming here for years...30 plus. This place has incredible taste for food and the service is nothing but the best. (Rivals Disney). My favorite soup is their hot and sour, solid every time. Gotta get the Tsing Tao beer. We order beef and broccoli, general tso chicken prok fries rice. Thank you for continuing dedication to great service and great food. (Pun intended)!

We've been eating there for many years. It's the best Chinese food around. Would be helpful if we could see the names of the dishes shown on the main page. You know the old saying "we eat with our eyes first".

Recommendation: Peking Duck. . Detailed Review: My wife had a endoscopy today. I picked her up at 4:30pm. Since she was still affected by the anesthetic, we decided to order dinner to pick up. I ordered a Egg Drop Soup (quarter) for her and we share a Peking Duck. This review will mainly focus on the food I guess. When I get in the restaurant to pick up my food, I took some photos of the inside. It looks clean and cozy. - Egg Drop Soup: fragrant, good. My wife likes it. I tried some spoons and have to agree with her. - Peking Duck: the best part of this dish is they have a side Duck meat and veggies. I went to other Chinese restaurants for Peking Duck, after they cut the meat and skin, they will throw away 75% of the Duck. Not here, aside with a dish of meat with skin, they have a dish with meat with veggies and sauce. They are both good. According to the price range, I give it 5/5. . My bill total is $67. . So I would say I give the food 5/5. Now that I like the Duck and the atmosphere of this restaurant, I will go back and try their Lobsters.

Came here with my coworkers for lunch. Service was incredibly fast. Our waiter kept our drinks (water & soda) full & cleared our plates when we were done with our appetizers. I've been to many Chinese food restaurants and this truly is, by far, the best one yet. When I asked for super spicy General Tso's, I wasn't disappointed. It took us longer to eat than for us to wait for anything else. We took our time as we chatted. Really great atmosphere, staff, and food.

Google
Always excellent. The menu has all the traditional favorites and many unique dishes. I have experienced many seafood dishes and have never been disappointed. The full bar is very nice. The owner Frank is always visible to be sure you have a positive dining experience.

I eat this food all the time. Me and my family have been going there since before I can even remember. It's a generational thing, and I order at least once a month. Recently, I haven't been getting the most consistent food. But today I ordered in this food is disgusting. It was a complete waste of fifteen dollars.I'm not sure if it was refried or sitting there.I understand the restaurant had no one in there and it wasn't a busy day, but I thought I would get fresh food just because there was less people to serve.

Google
Had the Mt. Fuji and it was quite nice, fresh, and light. A large portion with a velvety smooth sauce

Yelp
We ended up here two days in a row taking our parents out separately... and all I can say is YUM... still my favorite Chinese place, after all these years! Always welcomed with a smile and fast service... plus, just wonderful, fresh and quality ingredients, likely the most authentic Chinese food in the area AND the most tasty. Definitely worth the 20 minute drive from my folks home. It's always wonderful to see a food establishment still thriving after many decades of serving the public.

Yelp
Came to this restaurant for the first time with friends as we were seeing a show near by. It's a large restaurant with its own parking lot. Everyone that worked there was super nice and each greeted us and said good bye to us. Our waitress was very nice and helpful. We all enjoyed our meals. It was nice to be able to go to a sit down Chinese restaurant. I would come again when I am in the area .
google avatar

Marjorie M.

Yelp
Meet up with a friend who use to live in the area and who highly recommended the place. The parking lot was pretty fill when we arrived for an early dinner which already told me it's a neighborhood fave. Alot of great menu options. Our meals arrived quickly and everything was pretty good. Our server was nice but we felt rushed during our dining experience.

Yelp
This is the Chinese restaurant that sets the bar for all others Warmly greeted upon entry, my neighbor and I were seated quickly for lunch Our waitress came over with glasses of water and promptly took our drink order Looking around I saw the tight ship this manager and owner run. This was a well prepared lunch crew. The order was put in for two egg rolls, as an appetizer My neighbor ordered the lemon chicken, which included hot and sour soup I ordered the garlic chicken, along with wonton soup The soups arrived almost immediately, and shortly thereafter came the two spring rolls. The wonton soup was perfect. Two delicate wontons, stuffed with pork, in a chicken broth that was not salty whatsoever. My neighbor said the hot and sour soup was some of the best she ever had The spring rolls were on point, slightly crispy, amazing flavor, and a perfect choice to start to the lunch experience The dinners arrived, and I saw that the beef and garlic sauce also included water chestnuts, broccoli, and a delicious brown sauce that was not too overpowering. The beef and garlic was a perfect combination with these vegetables and the gravy over rice. The rice was just perfectly sticky and delicious. Explosions of different flavors hit this dish perfectly. This was one of the best Chinese dishes I've had in a long time. Tasting the lemon chicken, the chicken was pounded extremely thin, deep-fried and served with lemon slices over the top. It was very nice. The restrooms were spotless. The enjoyment experience was off the charts as far as the ambience, food presentations, the various tastes of the food, along with the prices The vibe was perfect. For Connecticut, this has to be one of the best Chinese restaurants in the state. In simple terms, the experience was perfect. Thank you Great Taste. You show Connecticut how restaurants (and small businesses) should be run.

Yelp
One of my favorite Chinese food restaurants around. Ordered the boneless spare rib combo and the sweet and sour chicken combo.

Yelp
Ordered takeout tonight and decided to try the House Special Chow Mei Fun. As we arrived to pick it up, the establishment was uniquely decorated. The staff were very kind and greeted us as soon as we walked inside; our order was ready within the designated time. The dish was so tasty-the meat and noodles were cooked wonderfully. I definitely recommend ordering from here for a takeout dish or if you'd like to stop by and dine in. We will be returning!

Yelp
Takeout for four from our favorite Chinese restaurant in town. I just wished they had delivery, other than that no complaints. The food always tastes good , this is the best wonton soup I've had lately . The service is always fast. And it's always prepare in a timely manner. Even on a busy night to pick up time wasn't more than 25 minutes. Our family loves it!

Yelp
Continued our 'Duck Hunt' with a visit to an old favorite of mine here at Great Taste. I have been eating here for many years and always celebrated my [late] wife's birthday here. We always had the round table at the front with the large screen behind us. There were her three sisters and their husbands. The menu was always Peking Duck. A friend and I had the same meal here yesterday. The duck was presented at the table and taken away for preparation. It soon returned ready to be deftly served wrapped in its wafer thin 'pancake' with shredded scallion and sweet bean sauce. There were three very large servings each. We got through it very pleasantly as it was moist and perfectly cooked. Lo and behold I had forgotten that the rest of the duck would be served in a beautiful melange of stir fried vegetables accompanied by large individual portions of rice. That last course was split and is now awaiting us as another meal tomorrow. Great memories and great food [as usual]!

Yelp
My family has been coming here for years. Excellent all around!!! Wonderful service, our waters were never empty. Food came out fresh, quick, and hot. We enjoyed the seafood delight, general tsos, bone in ribs, shrimp and pork fried rice. 10/10 for everything! Comfortable dining room, wonderful food. Thank you for a lovely dinner!

Yelp
Me and my daughter went there a few times and it was always a good experience the good is amazing the stuff is nice it's a little pricey but it's worth it

John A.

Yelp
The quality of the food for the price paid was not satisfactory. The service and ambiance were excellent but the food was not up to the standard that I expected and had received in the past from Great Taste.

Yelp
First time trying this place and it was a great experience Was seated given water and a menu all immediately Ordered black tea and the serve recommended the chicken lo mein with the happy family meal it's all 10/10 if I ever come back here, I'll definitely try this place again.

Yelp
As soon as we walked in-they addressed us with warm smiles! Attentive and assisted us with questions on the menu. Food is delicious!! We ate some of it before taking pics! Would definitely come again if lived here!

Yelp
It is really hard to find a sitdown Chinese restaurant these days and when you do find one, it is even more difficult to find one that doesn't disappoint. Great Taste has linen tablecloths, with both booth and table seating and an ample parking lot. The staff is friendly and attentive. We have now been here a total of 3 times and everything I've tried is delicious. They even offer combinations on their sitdown menu. Ask for the crispy noodles, if they are not brought to the table. They are so good! We have tried a couple of their soups, egg rolls, PuPu platter, ribs, beef teriyaki, Happy Family, shrimp with mixed vegetables and a few fried rices all made with quality ingredients and fresh vegetables. Wonderful presentation as well. Look at the beautiful radish garnish in my photos. We now make it a point of visiting this restaurant when we are in the vicinity of New Britain. Give it a try, you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
By far the best Chinese food in the area. Great Taste is my go-to for reliable, delicious food that is made to perfection each time. Typically I get a to go order. They are fast and efficient, with my food usually ready in 10-15 minutes. The restaurant itself is great for a casual dinner or a fancy event. While the interior is a little dated, it is clean and the staff are friendly.

Yelp
I can't believe I have never reviewed this place. I've been coming here for 36 or so years and I can honestly say I can't remember a bad meal ever during that timeframe. Let me start out apologizing for not getting more photos. I never thing to do so due to the long history of coming here and how I love this place. The service is top notch from the great greeting to the quick, efficient and quality service throughout the night. If you're looking for a certain ambiance, this is white table cloth fine dining Chinese. You don't see that often and this place pulls it off. While some might suggest the ambiance is dated, I believe it Carrie's well through time and serves as the tapestry upon which great food is served. As for the food itself, yummy/wow! I've tried a fair number of dishes on the menu and I haven't been disappointed. From apps to meals, if you get things you know you generally like at a Chinese restaurant, you'll appreciate their elevation of the dish even more here. A couple of things you should know to maximize the enjoyment on your meal. They have the fried noodles but you have to order them as there is a small charge for them. The complete meal option is awesome as you get an app, a soup and ice cream with your meal. Also, they do the hot towel hand clean move at the end of the night. If you're not expecting, you might react sharply to being handed the hot towel (I've seen it more than once). All in all, this is the best white linen / fine china type Chinese Restaurant I've ever eaten at, and it's been that way since at least 1988!

Yelp
Excellent food! I hadn't been in years and was invited to go on Father's day with my son and his girlfriend. It was so good! The service was great, the place was comfortable and clean . Very nice, you will not be disappointed!

Yelp
Absolutely fanatic. Would give 10 out of 10. Fantastic service. Waiter rolled all the mushu pork at table. Great food great service. Counselor recommend more.

Yelp
They have all the awards for best of and they earned it authentic well prepared Chinese food

Rob B.

Yelp
I am saddened to say that today's visit to Great Taste was utterly disappointing. The usually delicious fried rice, General Taos and chicken wings were very bad. The wings tasted sour, the chicken was gummy, and worse of all the rice smelled and tasted heavily of smoke. It was all inedible. The other items were mediocre at best. It was the only Chinese food restaurant we went to. But I don't think I'll go back.
google avatar

Greg L.

Yelp
Frisky local restaurant- all of the vegetables are perfectly cooked. The sauces are a bit lighter and less spicy than many Chinese restaurants I've previously visited.

Yelp
My friend and I went to Great Taste Chinese Restaurant in New Britain since we were in the area. I remembered reading some positive reviews from my friends on Yelp about this place. When we arrived I noticed, they have lots of awards and articles they've been published in and received all framed on the wall. The dining room is very spacious and clean. Each table had a bouquet of fresh carnations on it. We decided to get stir fry vegetables with shrimp and white rice. We also got a soup each, I got the Egg Drop and my friend got the Wonton soup. My Egg Drop soup arrived and it was hot, but it was missing something it was very bland. My friend enjoyed her Wonton soup. We shared the vegetables with shrimp, we knew that getting two portions would be too much food. We got white rice with our meal. It was delicious. There was plenty of shrimp, it was cooked well, everything was very fresh, perfectly seasoned and flavorful. The service was fast and pleasant. They came around to fill our waters frequently. I would come here again.

Linda G.

Yelp
I've been going to Great Taste for decades. The food is always outstanding and so is the service; attentive but not overbearing. The decor is pleasant. Hard to believe that many years ago this building housed an IHOP! Either dining in or taking out, you will not be disappointed.

Yelp
The Food, service and , value make it a great place - great for families or small parties

Yelp
This is one of the best Chinese restaurants in the country. I haven't had Chinese-American food like this in a while. It is not a fancy mix of ingredients but a very traditional interpretation of Chinese takeout. Eating here reminded me of Philadelphia's Chinatown in its heyday. I always welcome this type of food that tastes really good and takes me down memory lane. We had the soups, really good and hot, the fried rice was really good also, and we got mega jumbo shrimp that was really good, and fried duck that was also really good. I really wish I could visit this place again and eat more of their food. I make my own Chinese-American food at home because most restaurants can't hack it, but this place is legit. Also, this restaurant is a restaurant, not a takeout Chinese window with a few tables. That was also nice. I really liked this place and recommend it to everyone.

Yelp
When you get married and you start making joint food decisions, certain types of restaurants become less of a priority. I ate Chinese food with much greater frequency before I was married, but Chinese is not one of my wife's favorite cuisines. There was a time when I thought of Great Taste as one of the better Chinese restaurants in the Greater Hartford area, but it's been years since I've been there, through no fault of GT's. I always thought of GT as a dine in place, and most of my Chinese meals now are lunchtime takeout since I'm looking for solo convenience. Today, I ordered takeout of the Happy Family lunch special, the hot and sour soup and an egg roll. Great Taste is one of the fancier Chinese restaurants in the Greater Hartford area. I remember service being very welcoming and professional, and I saw that again in my limited interactions today. Generally speaking, my meal was very good, but some parts were better than others. I forgot how good Great Taste's egg rolls are. I can't think of an area Chinese restaurant egg roll I like better than Great Taste's. It had a fantastic crispy outside. I'm no expert on egg roll filling construction, but whatever Great Taste does, that is my favorite style of egg roll. I don't know if the minced red stuff is pork or some type of Chinese sausage. Whenever I see that color, I know I'll love the egg roll. It didn't even need sauce. The Sweet and Sour Soup was above average. It had nice flavor and was full of typical S&S ingredients. The Happy Family Special was mostly very good. Many meals are about eliminating what can go wrong. For instance, if you have a good piece of salmon, just don't overcook it and you'll be alright. In that sense, Great Taste did their job. The veggies, which included broccoli, carrots, onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, pea pods, water chestnuts and baby corn were cooked just right. The shrimp and roast pork were also cooked properly. Some of the chicken pieces, however, were chewy. The sauce had a good consistency and flavor too. It was slightly sweet and salty, without being soupy. The fried rice was just OK for me. I find I rarely love fried rice when it is yellow like Great Taste's. I don't know why, but it's true. I don't presently have an area Chinese restaurant that makes everything I like in the exact way that I like. For this reason, I think my lunch from Great Taste was about as good as any other I've had from an area Chinese restaurant in a while. I would definitely go back for takeout or dine in. Four Stars

Yelp
By far our favorite Chinese restaurant! We typically dine-in when we eat here. It's more expensive but the ambiance is fun. I particularly love their lunch menu! The General Tao's chicken is delicious. I love their hot and sour soup, too. Many other delicious options as well. The service is usually great for the most part - quick and efficient. We always come back!
google avatar

Pooja A. V.

Yelp
I'm back after many years because we were in the area and needed to eat. Service - horrible. The waiter didn't even check on us after our food hit the table. Before ordering, we were being hounded and pestered every 1.5 mins if we were ready to order. We were a table of 4 yet there were table settings for 3 people only until food hit the table. The food - typical American Chinese food and everything tastes the same. Terrible ending to a pretty good day.

Yelp
Love coming to Great Taste for quality Chinese food and fun drinks! More of an upscale dining experience, with super attentive and welcoming staff. The prices are on the higher end but portions are a good size. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Vincent P.

Yelp
First visit and lived up to expectations and recommendations. Nice atmosphere and prompt service. Food was served in family style presentation and was delicious. Upscale Chinese food with better flavor and freshness. Waiter (Bill) was very nice and attentive...and we got a warm towelette at the end of our meal. Slightly pricey, but enjoyed the food and the experience.

George D.

Yelp
This restaurant is always a delight! The food is perfect and the service staff outstanding. My fourth visit here today; an absolute favorite! George D.

Yelp
I just had the boneless ribs and chicken fried rice and once again it was outstanding this place never seems to fail I love how the food always seems to be the best in town ..
google avatar

Michele C.

Yelp
What a great experience! The scallion pancakes were so flavorful I almost filled up on just those! The Chicken Lo Mien wasn't a big portion but the taste was so good! My daughter got the General Tso's chicken. The portion was was pretty big and cooked to perfection! There was a flower made from a turnip in her plate and fresh flowers on the table... nice touches! You can't beat the hot towel to clean your hands to end a nice experience!
google avatar

Sho R.

Yelp
I took lunch from here. Sa cha chicken and moo shu beef were my items. My sa cha chicken did not taste like chicken. Not sure what meat I got. Both the items were low in flavor as well.
google avatar

Sarah W.

Yelp
The best Chinese food in Connecticut, with wonderful service, a friendly owner and great little touches like the hot towels at the end. I really love their cashew chicken, and they have some good tofu dishes for vegetarians. My dad used to go here with his best buddy after coaching basketball and they'd always get the spare ribs. The same wait staff have worked there for a very long time and they recognize return customers, which is really nice. Big tables are available for families and larger parties. A gem and a destination restaurant in New Britain!

Yelp
Usually order take out, Had dinner in the restaurant. Great food and service. Definitely nice to eat the food fresh. Lip smacking umami

Yelp
Some of the better tasting Chinese food in New Britain. We have had takeout and dine in at this location. The restaurant was clean and the staff was friendly. The food is good and stays warm even during takeout.

Yelp
Our favorite Chinese food in the area, has been a staple in New Britain for as long as I can remember. Very friendly staff! Awesome lo Mein hot and sour soup

Yelp
Price $$-$$$ Service 4* Food: Very Good Ambiance: 5* Lunch is cheaper than dinner with almost same size portions.

Steven K.

Yelp
Best Chinese food I've had!!! Granted, Chinese food can only be so good, but this was excellent! Peking Duck was great and priced well Boneless spare ribs were tender and the sauce exceeds expectations All other food was above average
google avatar

Susan C.

Yelp
Great food and attentive service on this busy Christmas Day. I had Seafood Delight and shrimp cutlets and my husband had MT Fuiji. The vegetables were fresh and crisp and the shrimp and scallops had a delicate white sauce.
google avatar

Nelson P.

Yelp
I truly enjoyed the atmosphere and food here. A nice opportunity for a sit down experience with tablecloths etc. Food served family style, which is a great departure from other places that I've tried. This is the go-to when I don't want take out but want Chinese Food. Been more than once, service is not consistent, but was decent overall, once was a bit rushed. I would consider rating higher if the service were more consistent.

Denise M.

Yelp
Great food and service... Love the Jumbo shrimp with honey walnuts with broccoli, crab Rangoon , boneless spareribs

New Britain CT Consumer Insights C.

Yelp
This restaurant is in a low competition area. It doesn't hold up to the big cities' Chinese food (NYC, Boston). I had to throw away my plate. -OVER PRICED -low quality ingredients -food was dry and overcooked -too much MSG and salt -terrible service and rude -long wait times
google avatar

Yelp
They are always great at service as well as food is top quality. Pay a dollar more and enjoy instead of regretting

Yelp
Had a great meal. Waiter was a little snobby and ridged but the food was great and service was prompt. I don't think the waiter enjoyed serving young kids. Manager was very kind and gave lollipops to the kids. We will go back. But hopefully we get a different waiter
