Brussels Beer Guide: Top Breweries, Brilliant Restaurants and Gorgeous Hotels

"The Van Roy family of Cantillon is among the most renowned brewers in Brussels. Beer has been brewed in this corner of Anderlecht since 1900, and today it remains one of the few artisanal lambic breweries in the Belgian capital. Cantillon's lambic, gueuze and kriek are famous worldwide, with many fans in places as far away as the United States. You can visit the brewery and its Gueuze Museum several days a week. Be sure to check the website, as the Van Roy family regularly organizes special events." - The MICHELIN Guide

"An Old-School Brewery in Brussels No trip to Belgium is complete without experiencing the Belgian beer culture. The best place in Brussels to take a look at beer history is the Cantillon Brewery. Even as a non beer drinker, it’s a fascinating place to visit. One of the things that makes Cantillon so special, is that it has hardly changed since it opened its doors in 1900, (including the dust and cobweds!) The second unique aspect of Cantillon, is the spontaneous fermentation of its tart Lambic beers. Beer really is in the air around Brussels! Cantillon beers are 100% organic and come in a variety of styles and flavours, from traditional Lambic and Faro beer to the tart cherry beer, Kriek. Tours take place every day in multiple languages and, if you’re lucky, your visit could coincide with brewing or bottling days."

The Best Gifts for Beer Lovers, According to Brewers and Beer Writers | Eater

"A traditional lambic brewery associated with authentic bottle-conditioned Belgian beers and the specialized accoutrements that go with them; because lambics contain yeast and sediment, enthusiasts prize woven lambic baskets (made from dyed seagrass and rattan or all-rattan versions) that let bottles be stored and poured at a tilt for a properly clear serve, making such baskets a beloved, practical gift for Belgian-beer nerds." - Maxine Builder

The Top Things to See and Do in Brussels in 2025

"Founded in 1900 and the last surviving lambic brewery in Brussels, I appreciated Cantillon Brewery for its public tours where you can watch the traditional beer-making process, see older original equipment and methods from the 20th century, and sample beer; guided tours are offered on Saturdays for 12 EUR and self-guided tours during the week cost 8 EUR." - Matthew Kepnes

The brewery inside is really cool . The beers are different compared to normal beers, so expect something different in taste, but were all nice. The only problem in my opinion is the person behind the bar that instead of explaining the menu and the beers he just acts like he doesn't care about customers and he actually doesn't want anyone to bother him. I simply asked him : it is my first time here, what do you recommend? And he replied: I recommend you not to ask stupid questions. Get a life man!

A great experience in Brussels to visit a working brewery and sample their beer. We loved our time at this brewery. Highly recommended if you are in Brussels.

Cheers from Alaska! This was one of the coolest brewery tours we did in Brussels. If you like sours, this is your spot. My wife and I stopped here after a friend in Alaska recommended it to us. The tour was self-guided but very neat and easy to get around the brewery. Highly recommend visiting Cantillon!

Last visit during Open Brewday. Allways a pleasure to visit Cantillon and a must visit everytime i go to Brussel. Last week, for the first time in many many years i also did the brewery tour. Good and interesting, we also got to try the wort. Normally you can pre book guided tours with english, french or dutch speaking guides, but there is also possible to do the self guided tour. One of the things many always wondering about before visiting Cantillon is the bottle selection from the take away board and drink in board. Last week the take away board was exceptionally good, both the regular beers, but also magnum of the gueuze, Saint Lamvineus, Vigneronne and one of my favourite beers La Plaisir. The bottle shop is located just inside the entrance. There is always merchandise, glassware etc and sometimes even jelly and fantastic locally vinegar made by Vinaigrerie Sainte Odile. If you want to enjoy any of the Cantillon beers at the brewery, you can visit the bar at the 2nd floor. Everytime I have visited there has been plenty of bottles to choose from. Menu is written on three boards, and pricing is very good. During my visit last week we where very lucky to get to try the Lou Pepe Gueuze 2008 which tasted extremely good, very citrusy forward. The quality in general is extremly high at Cantillon, and what ever they have on the menu, its pure quality! Some people might not think they like lambic/sour beers, but those people should at least try one of the regular gueuze, framboise or kriek and i belive they would be plesently surprised. Most beers available to buy the whole bottle 0,75l, 0,375l and there might be one or two 1,5l bottles. But there is also some beers served by the glass. The bar takes credit cards. No food/snacks available/allowed at the bar. If you plan to stay and drink for many hours i recommend to eat in advance and bring a bottle of water.

This tour was great value, the information provided was interesting and it was cool to walk around a working brewery. The taster beers provided at the end were of great quality. Now you're thinking why 3 stars? As much as the majority of the brewery staff were very helpful (big thanks to the person at the "filtration stage" of the tour for explaining things to us)..The old George Carlin look alike (as mentioned by another reviewer) at the bar serving was extremely rude and had attitude. There's a number of reviews saying the same thing and we even mentioned it to the brewery on the way out and they just brushed it off. Everything else on the tour was great and worth visiting.

Even if gueuze and lambic are a speciality of a Belgium I would strongly recommend going to another brewery and blender where you will be received warmly as opposed to the cold and agressive manner of Cantillon which I find to be a real shame. Not at all bike friendly whereas larger suitcases appear to be welcome. Sorely disappointed compared to my first visit and won't be going back...

I'm not usually the type to review a place, but this one deserves it. To preface, I brew my own beers and I am studying for the cicerone exam (that's like a sommelier for beers if you're unfamiliar). While I may know the modern brew process, I was excited to see up close how traditional Belgian lambics were brewed. Cantillon does make excellent lambics, but I have to echo what many other reviewers here said-- the bar staff is truly awful. The last line of the booklet from the self-guided tour (which you can trust I went through in-depth) said "feel free to ask any questions you may have"-- the bar staff, on the other hand, was extremely rude and condescending. You get 3 free tastings at the conclusion of the tour, and the first one is evidently a lambic straight from the barrel. Given that a Cantillon gueuze is a blend of 1-, 2-, and 3-year aged lambics, I tried to ask the age of the lambic we were tasting. The old man bartender berated me and said I clearly understood nothing from the tour and knew absolutely nothing about beer, because "this lambic isn't aged." Of course, that bartender had no problem answering "obvious" beer questions from my wife. The staff's rudeness and condescending behavior was completely uncalled for, and completely soured my opinion on Cantillon.

Yelp
This brewery was in a non-tourist part of town and not all that easy to find. We enjoyed the story and the history. We were not as keen on the the Belgian sour style of beer, while others were loving all they could get. Even if you do not like the beer, it is worth it for trip back in time to see the place and enjoy the story.
