The Best Affordable Hotels in Europe, According to Travel Experts

"Arriving at Monachyle Mhor on a mirrored loch surrounded by mountains felt almost hallucinogenic after months confined to a flat; the hotel’s cosy luxury—sheepskins, neutral tones, a roll-top bath—and a restaurant showcasing Scotland’s bounty (Perthshire venison, Isle of Mull scallops) made our stay unforgettable." - Travel + Leisure Editors Travel + Leisure Editors Since 1971, Travel + Leisure editors have followed one mission: to inform, inspire, and guide travelers to have deeper, more meaningful experiences. "An award-winning restaurant at the foot of the Trossach Mountains, Monachyle Mhor is a must-stop for gourmands. Here, executive chef Marysia Paszkowska and head chef Graham Kerr cook exceptional Scottish fare, using ingredients sourced mainly from the restaurant’s own farm and surrounding hills. The team picks vegetables, fruit, and herbs from the kitchen garden and forages in secret spots, resulting in such refined dishes as Blackface lamb with pearl barley, chorizo, confit tomato, black olives, and capers, and Peterhead cod with baby gem lettuce, fondant potatoes, celeriac, and walnuts. If you simply can’t tear yourself away from your meal, you’ll be relieved to know that Monachyle is also a hotel, with cozy rooms, a stylish cabin, and a restored 1950s Pilot Panther showman’s wagon."

Monachyle Mhor, Trossachs National Park, Scotland - Explore & Book

"Travelling to this snug gourmet retreat is almost as much fun as arriving there: you snake four miles through woods along the edge of Loch Voil, enjoying the snow-capped peaks of the Trossachs around you. Or, if you’re feeling flush, you can arrive by sea plane on the loch in front of the stone farmhouse and down a glass of champers on the shore. There’s history here too: this glen is the home of the MacLaren and MacGregor clans, and the most notorious MacGregor of them all, Rob Roy, is buried in the churchyard nearby. Once you reach Monachyle Mhor you’ll be reluctant to stir. Inspirational gastronomy, stylish design and a personal welcome make this a truly special place. It’s run by siblings Tom, Dick and Melanie who were all raised here on what started off as a farm and is now a bijou gastro-bolthole that foodies and design aficionados traipse to from afar. The 2,000-acre farm, its produce, and the Lewis’ infectious enthusiasm remain firmly at the heart of Monachyle. Within the original stone farm buildings, 16 quiet rooms come with modern design and oodles of funk factor. We loved it here, and found it hard to leave. Or if you want to sleep even closer to nature, book one of the cabins deep in the woodland. Highs The food is superb - well presented without being fussy, and bursting with taste and inspiration The rooms are fresh and original: they'll make you smile (and sleep well) We love the eco-friendly Tiny House - a really romantic bolthole You can't get much more remote in the UK - and yet it’s only 90 minutes' drive from Glasgow and Edinburgh An atmosphere that’s intimate and friendly, yet also has a touch of Kensington sophistication Lows A large deposit is required on reservation The snug little bar is the only nightlife here, so you’ll have to provide your own Not really geared up for children, except tinies (families generally prefer sister property Mhor 84 Motel just down the road) Not for budget travellers: food and drink costs can mount up If you're on a romantic break, be aware that some double beds are singles zipped together" - Clare Hargreaves

Monachyle Mhor (Loch Lomond, UK) Verified Reviews | Tablet Hotels

"Perched on the edge of a quiet freshwater lake, Monachyle Mhor is the elegant centerpiece of a 2,000-acre working farm in the Scottish highlands. With an upscale restaurant specializing in elevated Scottish cuisine made with ingredients produced on-site — and freshly baked scones with cream served anytime at the bar — it’s as much a low-key foodie destination as a stylish boutique hotel." - Tablet Hotels

My Husband and I were gifted our overnight stay with the tasting dinner menu and had a fabulous time. Monachyle Mhor is just lovely and so homely. All the staff were wonderful and made us feel so welcome. The food was gorgeous and our room was lovely too. All in all a wonderful experience. Thank you all.

We were looked after so so well by Lottie and the team at Mhor. Thank you so much for hosting our wee work retreat. The venue in itself is very special. The approach through woods on the lochside road is beautiful, and the drive up to the front of the hotel impresses, and tells you all you need to know about the experience you are about to have. Fresh cream scones with jam, jam first or cream, your choice! Delicious coffee, teas and fresh scottish spring water. Comfortable spaces, warm fires. And a delicious lunch of fresh carrot and ginger soup, and sourdough sandwiches. Probably the best bit though is the team - Kier and his colleagues looked after us like royalty. You cant beat it. We will be back. Thank you all. Will & The Smiddy Team

Wonderful stay in a beautiful, remote location. The hotel, rooms, food, wine, cocktails and especially the wonderful staff were all fabulous. Such a special place. It was also lovely to walk along the loch side from Monachyle Mhor to Mhor 84 for lunch and to just relax in the hotel lounges with the diverse selection of books. Thanks for a superb visit. Definitely recommend.

We were recommended the hotel from friends for a special occasion but were disappointed with our stay. Our room was one of the ‘farmhouse’ rooms which looked lovely online. The room is very small and the bed was very uncomfortable. Both my husband and I woke with sore backs the following day. There was also no fridge in the room. We went for down for dinner 10 minutes early to enjoy the bar area. This area is very small and isn’t super relaxing as it’s a thoroughfare for guests and staff moving about. We sat for 30 minutes over our booked time before getting our table, the staff didn’t communicate that they were running late or apologise for the time keeping. The dining area is very quaint, a couple of smaller rooms with tables and a ‘corridor’ like area. We were unfortunately sat in this area which was a constant busy of staff. It didn’t feel very calm and relaxing, unlike what Monachyle stands for. The food was good, presented well, but we both left still hungry as the portions are teeny. The waiting staff were friendly and attentive. There is an outbuilding as a living room which is a lovely space to sit in and enjoy. Overall, we wouldn’t rush back as we didn’t feel it was worth the £500+ price tag for one nights dinner, bed and breakfast but loved the setting.

We had our dream wedding at Monachyle Mhor and it was everything we could have imagined. The views, the people, the food, and the atmosphere were absolutely perfect. From start to finish, everything felt magical.||Tom, the owner, made us feel so welcome and at home. The servers, Leanora (hope we’re spelling that correctly) and Keir, were so amazing. They were kind, attentive, and charming. Every little detail was taken care of with such care and warmth.||We truly wouldn’t have changed a single thing. It was the most incredible experience, and we’re forever grateful to the Monachyle Mhor team for making our dream day a reality. ||We’re already planning to come back to relive the magic all over again.||Love, ||Cooper & Amanda Sturrock

Good points : Food and service were excellent. Room was clean and warm with lots of hot water. The bed was very comfortable with clean linen of good quality .|Demerits: Very expensive despite an Itison voucher. Furniture throughout the hotel looked as if it came from a charity or second hand shop.

Fantastic stay - despite the (very wet) weather. Nothing better than returning from a wet hill walk to a drink by the cosy fire in the Snug! The room, food and friendly service were all incredible. And I would recommend the Revive sauna / swim to anyone - magical way to start the day!

Stayed here last weekend for my sister's wedding - there was a storm and a power cut and it could have been a disaster but the whole team at Monachyle Mhor ensured we all had an incredible time and went above and beyond for everyone and it was utterly magical. Incredible location, hotel and food. I plan to return at some point!

Yelp
Unbelievable place. The location is one of the most beautiful places I've been. Even when the weather is poor - which is often in Scotland - the hotel and surrounding area are absolutely stunning. Go for a walk and come back to proper cocktails, fabulous food and a roaring fire. The quality of the food was really the stand out feature of this place. Clearly as much as possible is sourced locally, a lot of it actually grown on site. However, it's the refinement of Scottish classics while retaining the essence of the hearty, robust nature that's the talent. We were there for NYE where we had the 3 days package. That being the case, I can tell you that their mass catering is as good as I've seen any where else. This place is great for a couple and would be unbelievable as a wedding venue. Not to be missed.

Yelp
I would give this place more stars!!!! Amazing, amazing, amazing. Where do I start with the raving! 1) location: Perfectly located by lakes, waterfalls, hills, valleys, and mountains. It is def a small, narrow road that gets you here but worth it. 2) service: the rooms are perfect, the staff is beyond nice and awesome ammenities 3) food: fine dining at its best. From frestly hunted deer to fresh veggies grown on the geounds- just delicious. The drinks from wine to cocktails are perfect. Hidden gem away from the hustle and bustle of modern life!!! If you ever go to Scotland, this place is a MUST. I really hope to revisit some day.
