"In the late 1800s, South Bend built a 19th-century Queen Anne-style firehouse on Portage Avenue to be the quarters for five firemen, a stable of horses, and a Studebaker wagon. Today, the firehouse is home to No.6 Scratch Kitchen, a modern fine dining establishment with a daily changing menu and extensive wine list. Customer highlights include vegetable risotto, filet with fresh fig, goat cheese and mashed potatoes, and a cauliflower burger." - Drew Mentock

No.6 Scratch Kitchen in South Bend stands out as a charming historic site that offers high-quality dining with a personal touch. During our visit, we opted for a lighter fare, sharing some appetizers and ordering beverages, and were thoroughly impressed by the exceptional quality of the food. One of the highlights of our experience was the staff's willingness and ability to customize a mocktail for my companion. This bespoke drink was not only a delightful surprise but also a testament to the restaurant's dedication to customer satisfaction and creativity. The menu at No.6 Scratch Kitchen changes daily, reflecting the kitchen's commitment to freshness and innovation. Each dish is made from scratch and to order, which ensures that every meal is crafted with care and attention to detail. While this approach to dining does reflect in the pricing, it's a worthwhile consideration for those looking for a unique and high-quality meal experience. Although we only stopped in for snacks and refreshments, the quality of the offerings has us eagerly anticipating a return visit for a full meal. The possibility of a brunch menu in the future adds another exciting reason to revisit. For diners who appreciate fresh, made-from-scratch meals in a setting full of historical charm, No.6 Scratch Kitchen is a top-notch choice in South Bend. Food was 10/10. Service left a little to be desired. This restaurant has such an appreciation for gastronomy. Chef Amanda was amazing. Very personable while running the restaurant. I sat at the bar, eating the skirt steak and lemon blueberry bread pudding. The food was AMAZING; however, the bartender (not Judy) did not even acknowledge me for the second half of my meal. The first half of my meal, Judy checked in making sure everything was up to par. The second bartender who took over didn’t even acknowledge me. I had to ask Judy for my check otherwise it would’ve taken so long for me to close out my bill. The food here is quite expensive (which I don’t mind) but because of this, the service has to match. Once again, although the service seemed a bit chaotic, the food is so good that it’s worth a try.

It took a long while to get served and the scallops dish I wanted on the menu was gone. Only one veg choice sounded good - with a lot of garlic. Unique.. Not too many diverse places in South Bend area to suggest friends from Notre Dame days so the innovative approach and atmosphere is greatly appreciated.

TLDR: For the price, just not worth it I was so excited to finally try this restaurant, but sadly left so disappointed. But, if you don't mind bland food, half portioned-also bland drinks & sewage smells all at the high high price of $150, then you're in luck! I am convinced this chef has never met a seasoning in their life. Almost broke my tooth on the brussel sprouts because they didn't even bother cutting the stems off. I was pumped for the main dish, Kimchi Cauliflower bowl, sounds delicious, but instead I was given semi seasoned cauliflower with other veggies on plain, unseasoned white rice. I'm still trying to figure out where they put the kimchi, it's a very distinct bold flavor that cannot be missed. I wish I would have said something, but our server was nice and busy as he was also the only one serving & the bartender. I'm glad they left salt on the table, otherwise it would have been absolutely tasteless. Oh also we were given room temp water and were only offered ice at the end of our meal. And the sewage, you will smell it on your way in and out, so unless you want to lose your meal or your appetite...hold your breath?

Met friends out for my wife’s birthday and had an incredible meal. The atmosphere was reflective of the Halloween holiday but not over the top. The wait staff was amazing with the way they did a round Robin service with all there. They helped with wine selections and menu questions, which was definitely set up for people who know food and fine dining. A amazingly big shout out to Chef Vince who easily stole the show with his presentation of the food and flavor he was able to mingle into amazing dishes. I highly recommend all to go back multiple times to have a world class experience.

Was kind of a let down… heard great things about it and had high hopes. We arrived as one of the first guests and it took quite some time for our waitress to get our drink order, probably a solid 10 mins. The menu was confusing, they had things listed and it didn’t explain what they were. For example, it just said Kansas City. Which was apparently a steak. We ended up moving to the bar and got great service from the chef. She gave us a delicious app and some great history about the building.. everything on the dinner menu had mash potatoes and a “seasonal veggies” which was all broccoli. It was very good but there was no variety. I felt it was a little chaotic, my husband ordered a beer (which was amazing) but went to order another and there wasn’t any in stock in the bar so one of the kind ladies had to go to the basement, we tried to order a different to save her the trip but that’s was out too. We felt that for the price, we were eating at an over priced chilis. All in all we were let down.

Visited No.6 Scratch Kitchen and was pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere, Very Casual, Modern and Hip atmosphere and setup. The cook Vince spoke to us after the meal and explained his rotating menu that you can locate on their Facebook Page, the food was delicious. We tried the Skirt steak, and the Venison, and the meat quality was A1, and the preparation was phenomenal with top tear seasoning to match. We followed it with a lemon cake, that was also very good. I would say pricing is Similar to Ruth Chris, and Bin23, comparable, but maybe slightly Better. Will be visiting again!
