The 38 Best Restaurants in Seoul, South Korea | Eater

"Opened in 2016, Cafe Onion revolutionized the Seoul cafe scene with its first location in a converted factory in Seongsu, signaling the beginning of the former industrial zone’s transformation into a trendy hub filled with fashion brands and pop-up stores. Each of its four locations occupies a unique historic building, but the third branch in Anguk stands out for its stunning renovation of a century-old hanok. Combining modern design with traditional Korean aesthetics, the cafe offers a serene escape with expertly brewed coffee from house-roasted beans and a selection of freshly baked pastries. Vibe check: Takeout lines tend to be shorter, but for the best experience, wait for a seat inside." - Matty Kim

The Best Bakeries in Seoul to Visit on a Pastry Tour of the City

"Housed in a lovingly restored hanok, this location emphasizes slowing down and socializing in a traditional wooden setting where patrons are encouraged to remove their shoes and even sit on the floor. In addition to eye-catching creations such as a mountain-shaped Pandoro dusted with powdered sugar, the ambiance—a careful blend of historic architecture and modern patisserie—makes it a destination as much for the setting as for the pastries." - Katie Chang

5 of the best locally owned businesses in Seoul - SilverKris

"An atmospheric café created by design house Fabrikr, this location encloses a century-old traditional Korean home inside walls of plate glass in Bukchon Hanok Village, preserving the restored wooden framework while giving the space a modern, contemporary ambience. Visitors can choose conventional seating or low tables on the wooden floor; signature bakery items include the Ang Butter Bread — a ciabatta filled with red bean paste and butter — and pandoro, both popular with patrons." - Robert Koehler

Cafe Onion Anguk is one of those places that hits you first with the atmosphere calm, minimalist and so photogenic. The hanok style space gives it a really peaceful feel even when it’s busy. The pastries are the highlight, especially the signature items that come out warm and fresh. The coffee is smooth and pairs well with everything. It’s a great spot to slow down, enjoy the vibe and treat yourself. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the Anguk area.

Overrated internet phenomenon. Just because there is a line doesn’t mean it’s good. I bought chocolate bread (thought it was croissant but it was just bread) and the volcano looking bread. Both are just meh tasting, looking five star but tasting mediocre. The vulcano is just confection sugar pile, no cream or anything else. The chocolate cover is super thin. The bread is the sort you’d taste from a convenience store. Also I spotted they just put the already baked items with cream on open air shelf, beneath the table where the for sale bread is placed (see pic). Idk how long it sits like that but no refrigeration feels unsanitary. Plus whatever dust and cough droplets in the air will land on these items because take out line wraps around these shelves. The (male) bathroom feels cramped and kind of dirty. Only one urinal and one regular toilet.

This cafe was unique in that it’s located in a historic Korean home. Very cool indoor seating and an outdoor area to sit as well. The pastry’s looked and tasted amazing! As did the Earl Grey signature milk tea. We enjoyed the seasonal special croissant with a yummy creamy cheese filling and fresh figs. There was a quicker pick up or seat outside line than the inside seating line.

☕️ Their chocolate drink is super good, it’s a mix of chocolate & earl grey tea oh i’m in love. The pastries were tasty as well both savory and sweet options. Giving the fact that nearly all korean cafes and shops open pretty late, Onion Anguk is THE CHOICE if you’re an early bird. If you come here later than 8:00, you’ll have to wait in line.

Cafe Onion is an amazing spot with seriously impressive food and drinks. We absolutely loved the coffee and pastries. The atmosphere is also incredible. The cafe has the look of a traditional older Korean building with both an outdoor courtyard area and plenty of indoor seating, which gives it a really unique and relaxed vibe. The staff are super friendly and even speak good English which was very helpful. The food is very affordable and definitely worth the price. We also loved that you can purchase merchandise which is a fun extra touch. Overall Cafe Onion is a must visit for great coffee, delicious pastries and a beautiful setting.

Ah the famous Cafe Onion Anguk location. We came here before it opened and there was a lineup already. Which btw if I remember the hours listed on Naver were wrong and had said it should have been open at the time but it wasn’t… perhaps it was because it was Chuseok though. Once the doors opened they let people in while doing a head count and everyone kind of ran for the seating areas so they can scout for the best spots and leave their stuff to claim it. Keep in mind that you should take your shoes off if you sit in wooden areas. Once you claim a spot you needed to line up in a second line to grab pastries and to check out/order drinks. We got the famous pandoro bread as well as two pizzas. For drinks we got the handmade cola and “this chocolate latte is the best in town” (💀) I gotta be honest with you guys I feel like most cafes in Korea are the same—they care about aesthetics and the pastries and drinks are secondary. Everything was just okay taste wise and nothing really made me go WOW. I think my friend really enjoyed the cola but it didn’t really taste like cola to me..and the chocolate latte was good but maybe not to my taste. I do agree that the aesthetics of the cafe were nice though and it’s fun to experience it once at the very least.

Onion Café has such a cool vibe — beautiful interiors and great food (the pastries and coffee are really good!). The only downside is the wait after ordering — it takes quite a while for things to arrive, especially when it’s busy. Still, it’s a lovely spot to relax if you’re not in a rush.

This place does not need a review. Has a line of almost 20 30 people waiting anytime you go. But great for traditional seating and tried some traditional snacks along with croissants and coffee.
