We visited this restaurant because of a dear friend who has celiac. We ate here and maybe our expectations were too high. There was gluten free Detroit pizza which we are appreciative of. It’s just not our thing but I’m sure someone else will enjoy. We ordered two different pizzas but they were a little lackluster tasting. The chips were good! Wished they were hot/fresh. Would have been phenomenal.

Google
Dank. I was pleasantly surprised to find what what I assumed to be a tourist spot was nothing but, and did hella justice to Pittsburgh Detroit-style pizza. I got the pickle pizza as a gimmick, and it just worked. The pickles were mild and made in house, and they complemented the ricotta dolloped on each slice. I got pepperonis on it as well, and those were high quality! The crust was thicc, which is my personal style at home and I was happy to see it done so well here. The outside has a nice char as well, just enough! I'm coming back, regularly.

Google
The best Detroit Style Pizza I've had in Pittsburgh. Detroit Pizza is square cut with a thicker crust with most of the red sauce added to the top of the pie. Visited here after watching a Dave Portnoy, One Bite Pizza Review on YouTube. Dave gave it a solid review which made me want to check it out. I'm Glad I Did! To summarize the pizza taste - it was very tasty and well balanced. The red sauce was tasty and very mild with no bite to it. The dough, although thicker than I usually go for was light and fluffy and tasted properly seasoned and was generally easy to eat. After my first visit July 28/2025 I would recommend this place. I'll update my review once I visit again. I enjoyed my first experience so I plan to visit again. This place is currently on my Very Good Pittsburgh pizza restaurant list. 👍👍

Google
This is my second time at this location and the way they run this place is amazing. Every staff member works together to help the customers and make sure we have got food, full drinks, and are never without what we need. It’s a great experience. The pizza never disappoints and I love that I can customize it anyway I like. They also have options available for vegetarians or gluten free!

Google
Not too bad of a wait. Got seated at the counter and great service. First time trying pittsburgh pizza and really enjoyed it. The dough was fluffy and not super heavy. Good variery of topping choices and reasonably priced. Enjoyed for sure!

Google
I had the Classic Pie and the Garlic Pull Apart Bread, and both were excellent. The pizza had a thick, crispy crust with great flavor and a good balance of cheese and sauce. The red sauce on top was really well seasoned. The garlic bread came out soft and fluffy, loaded with herbs, and paired with a simple marinara that worked perfectly. It was the kind of bread you can’t stop eating even when you’re full. Overall, a great meal. I’d definitely come back

Google
After making you wait out in the cold to dine in rather than the restaurant, I was extremely disappointed with the taste of the pizza. While it might look good in pictures, the taste wasn't there. The wings seem to be from hormone fed chicken. The fries were probably the only decent thing there. I've had some good Detroit style pie and this is not it.

Google
Always fantastic pizza. They look small but hard to finish a whole one. Deep dish style, very good crispy crust. I like the buffalo chicken personally. Beer selection is always good and have some tasty cocktails as well. Place is a little small we usually sit at the bar but nice enough atmosphere.

Yelp
One of my top pizza spots--it's even on my Pittsburgh recommendations list for visitors. I've been a fan since the Smallman Galley days. I've enjoyed each topping combo I've tried; although, I'm a sucker for the Forager! You might need to wait a little bit during peak hours (it's not a huge spot), but it's well worth it. I'm typically a thin crust person, but the crispy cheese on the side, the delicious dough and the fun toppings keep me coming back to Iron Born time and time again!

Yelp
Detroit style pizza, who can turn that down? This place has a lot going for it, friendly and knowledgeable staff, good location and cool interior. I came for the pizza BUT will return for those MEATBALLS! Inexpensive and possibly the best I've ever tasted, and I've tasted a lot! They're moist, flavorful, in rich marinara and nicely topped with fresh pesto. Delicious-and I'm not a fan of pesto. Do yourself a favor and order those meatballs to go-you'll be craving them the following day for sure. As for the pizza, I wished I loved it but it kinda lacked flavor and the sauce was way too tangy for my little ole taste buds. So if in the area, definitely stop in but whatever you do, order those meatballs!

Yelp
We were in town Labor Day weekend where a ton of stuff was closed, but Iron Born was open. It was very busy, we waited outside for about 45 minutes before we got a table. Fortunately it wasn't too hot outside. I did see a bunch of people coming in to pick up takeout - I recommend that as the best way to enjoy your Iron Born pizza. They came through a couple times asking if folks were ok sitting at the bar, but it turns out they have bar stools with no backs and those aren't really middle-aged / bad-back person friendly so we had to decline and wait for a real table. We did eventually get seated though (at a very comfy booth), hubby ordered a cocktail and I ordered a soda. We ordered a pizza with about five toppings. The food took about as long as one would expect for Detroit style - it's not fast cooking food in general - and it was very good, but it was missing a couple of the toppings. It wasn't that big a deal, we just mentioned it to the waitress so we wouldn't get charged for the toppings. They ended up comping us the whole meal. I told our server that wasn't necessary at all, but she said that because of the long waits and also that mixup it was on them. I felt bad honestly, I wasn't trying to get anything for free, so I left a big tip. The food was very good. We absolutely would come back but probably would order ahead and take it to go. I would recommend they get better seating for the bar and then folks of more demographic variety would be able to accept the offer of bar seating to help with the long waits.

Yelp
I ordered this through a 3rd party delivery service so I'm sure it's better when it's fresh. Don't get me wrong it was still delicious! We got the vodka pizza, white pizza, and GF cheese. I really like their Detroit style pizza & the crust is good. Would def try again!

Yelp
Best Detroit-style pizza in Pittsburgh--hands down! The crust is perfectly crisp on the edges, fluffy inside, and loaded with flavor. What makes this spot even better is their always-rotating vegan pie, there's always something new and creative to try. The restaurant has a great setup with both dine-in and bar seating, plus a solid lineup of apps. Always consistent and always delicious ! Lucky to have them here in the 'Burgh!

Yelp
TikTok sent us here and we weren't disappointed! The pizza was absolutely delicious - as was their house Lambrusco! We had the Nashville chicken and the Yinzer. The pizza was thick, but not too thick, the perfect amount of golden crunchy crust - 10/10!! My ONLY complaint - we were here in August on a 93 degree day and we were first sat in the front booth with zero air movement. We ended up moving to a booth further back and it was better. But, be prepared for it to be warm on a summer day. Also we arrived before 7pm, so we didn't have to wait for a table but upon exiting, there was a small line outside waiting to be sat (as seating is pretty limited). Overall, 8.5/10! We will DEF be back!

Yelp
Love Iron Born pizza. I remember when they were in Federal Galley. Great to see them at their own location and it was packed. We got a table after about 15 minutes and ordered a couple pizzas to share. I really enjoyed the meatball pizza. The meatball was homemade and went really well with the cheesey pizza. Loved every bite!

Yelp
If you are in the market for Detroit Style Pizza, this is surely the place! We did get it delivered, so I can't comment on the interior or service, but the pizza and caramelized onion dip were both to die for good! We added prosciutto to this pizza. I know it's not available all the time, but this was surely a hit. Would definitely try other pizzas and even dine in next time. Everything was very fresh.

Yelp
We tried Iron Born Pizza on suggestion of a Pittsburgh foodie group and my daughter eating there a few weeks ago. The place is small but we got seated fast. The waiter was quick to take our order. The homemade chips are a great starter. They have a large selection of pizzas. We got 4 different ones for variety. All very good. Definitely a place we would visit again.

Yelp
Amazing! Who else has a gluten free Detroit style pizza? Best ever. The crust was thick, fluffy, the edges were crispy, the sauce like fresh tomatoes, pepperonis crispy on the edges. Servers were welcoming and casual, attentive and comfortable.
google avatar

Kiara D.

Yelp
5 stars. The Nashville chicken pizza was amazing, crispy, spicy, and full of flavor. The ranch is some of the best I've had, super creamy and perfect with the pizza. Definitely worth stopping in if you're in the Strip. You WILL have left overs!!
google avatar

Yelp
Very tasty Detroit-style pizza! Staff is friendly and online ordering worked well. Would recommend trying this place!

Yelp
I walked in and ordered a pie to go, so I can't really comment on the ambience. The employees who took my order and gave me my pizza were friendly and accommodating. I got a pizza with 1/2 pepperoni and jalapeño and the other 1/2 cheese. It was delicious. Sauce, crust, toppings....all excellent!
google avatar

Mark H.

Yelp
Really good, crispy, thick Sicilian style pizza. Could have used more whole tomatoes on top, and the thickness part of the crust was a little dry (more olive oil needed), but the outside crust and marinara was outstanding! This was very very good!

Justin H.

Yelp
Food was really good. The ingredients were fresh and the wings were really good as well. The service was ok. The restaurant was overall pretty clean.

Yelp
I went to try Iron Born Pizza while overnighting in Pittsburgh. Wow!!!! Pickle Pie is soooooo so delicious! The "sauce" has a nice garlic buttery flavor with a hint of maybe a scoche of honey. This odd pie was a party on my tastes buds! Unexpectedly delicious and satiating. I can tell this is a craving that I can't likely get anywhere else. The crust is thick with a flavorful crunch. Servers were very kind. I ordered it to go. There was a line outside but well worth the 20 minute wait!

Tony T.

Yelp
Worth the trip to the strip Pizza is tasty. The fresh chips and dip is fantastic. The server could have been a little more pleasant.

Yelp
Ugh I love iron born. Their Detroit style pizza hits the spot every single time!! I love trying their different speciality pies. Their meatball appetizer was also delicious, the sauce was amazing and I loved the little pesto droplet they put on top of each meatball! Good and reasonably priced cocktails/wine/beer too!
google avatar

Lauren B.

Yelp
So i ordered a pizza to go from here... and was SO impressed. The pizza was warm, the service was quick, and all while they were so busy. The pizza was the buffalo chicken and there was nothing better than the ricotta stacked on top. I love bread, so the Detroit style is one of my personal favorites. Huge fan. Hope to go eat in person soon.
google avatar

Isabel L.

Yelp
Detroit style pizza might be my new fav pizza style. The crispy cheesy crust with the fluffy bread base was amazing. I went with the vodka pizza since my siblings love vodka sauce and wanted to try this one. I had been here a couple years ago but haven't been back in a while, I'm so glad I returned. The ricotta melts in your mouth and every topping just made so much sense together. Might be the fastest time my siblings and I have finished a pizza together haha. It was perfect for a mid day snack while we walking around the strip district. We got seated quickly at one of their booths, there's not that many tables inside but you can easily bring larger families here since it seems like the booths can fit 6, maybe 7-8 people per booth. The signage in the bathrooms detailing different pizza styles was a nice touch. I grew up eating Old Forge pizza so it was great to see it represented on the wall!!
google avatar

Amanda B.

Yelp
Everybody I know seems to love this spot, so I was excited to finally try it. I'm so glad I did, because it's one of my new favorite pizza spots in the 'Burgh! Their pizzas are so good that even my husband (who normally dislikes square pizza) is a fan. Everything about the pizza works - the dough is so soft on the inside but crispy on the outside, and their sauces, cheese, and toppings are always on point. Their white pizzas are my favorite, but you can't go wrong with anything here. They also have a good Ceasar salad!
google avatar

Jennifer Á.

Yelp
Finally got around to trying this place and can't believe I didn't come here earlier. Pizza is delicious and fills you up. Also got a margarita that was pretty good! It's a small place so might have to wait to dine in but we sat at the bar which was still great. And they have cannolis that are cheap!
google avatar

Marcus M.

Yelp
This pizza was ok at best. It was way overpriced and overhyped. They have great customer service very nice people, but I feel ripped off. To be honest Jets is a chain and when it comes to Detroit style pizza it's much better in my opinion. Do get me wrong the pizza wasn't nasty but for $35 i could have two pizzas that were better
google avatar

Vickey K.

Yelp
I think they had right concept in their head, but the execution wasn't there. Pizza had too much bread compared to the toppings. However, the staff were nice and took their time explaining the menu and such! If you like your pizza thick with ALOT of bread, go check out this place :)
google avatar

Sarah G.

Yelp
So so so good!!! The quality of the ingredients is undeniable. We snagged a seat at the bar and it was the perfect spot to share some delicious salad and pizzas! Staff were friendly and the place has a Pittsburgh charm too it. If you've never been, do yourself a favor and try it!
google avatar

Yelp
I had a wonderful lunch at iron born pizza! This restaurant is located right on the strip. Inside there were tons of seating options and the restaurant was clean and tidy. I got the white pie and it came out very quickly/service was wonderful. The white pie was super balanced and tasty, I felt like the lemon arugula really freshened up the heavy cheesy/onion pizza in the perfect way. Would love to come back and try all of their interesting pizzas soon!
google avatar

Jennifer A.

Yelp
i finally had an opportunity to have the gluten free pizza at iron born and it did not disappoint. Now its been a long time since I've had a Detroit style pizza, but i had to question myself with every bite if it was gf or not. it was delicious. i will make the trip again yo try one if the many gf pizzas they have!
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Stopped with pizza passport. Been the the millvale location before but never here. Server was super friendly and ordered my pepperoni slice. Mine had 2 pieces of pepperoni but the flavors weee solid. After an authentic Detroit style last summer, the hype faded slightly but still a solid take on the classic profile. Great crust. Sauce ok.
google avatar

Anne L.

Yelp
If you like a bread-y pizza this place is for you. We got a mushroom and a cheese pizza. The cheese pizza was very tasty, they put the sauce on after baking it which meant the textures were interesting. The mushroom pizza left me disappointed. It was very sweet because of the honey and ricotta, and I could not even taste the mushroom. It more like a dessert pizza. The cannoli was so tasty! A nice lemon flavor. We came for a 7pm Wednesday dinner and had to sit at the bar bc it's such a small place. Would recommend.

Aditi S.

Yelp
We wanted to try a new pizza spot in town and ended up here. Although we had to wait in line to get seated, it moved fairly quickly and we had a table within 20 minutes for a group our size. We quickly decided on the Humble Pie, Veggie Supreme, and Classic. Our pizzas came out pretty quickly and we were excited to try each one. My personal and the group fave was surprisingly the Humble Pie (which is vegan?!) and all the flavors worked really well. The veggie supreme was pretty tasty especially after adding jalapeños for some spice. The classic was fine but paled in comparison to the other two pies. Highly recommend checking out this place and the the area in general!
google avatar

Andrea R.

Yelp
You need to experience this pizza! We stumbled upon this cute pizza shop! We ordered The Vegas and split it! So yummy! Our pizza had a white sauce with mushrooms and meat. It was delicious! I would love to come back and try others. The crust was different than I've ever had! Definitely an experience! Our service was also excellent!
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
Updating my review to add more photos and say that my two new favorite pies are the pickle pie and the meatball pie!! Everything here is just too good it's tricky to choose just one.
google avatar

Katie S.

Yelp
I ordered takeout online and it was a smooth and easy process. Pizza was ready on time and they remembered to include my extra ranch (I feel like other places forget things like this, so I appreciated that they were on top of it). The pizza was definitely different than what you usually get around here, but I loved it. If you are a picky pizza person, just be aware that this pizza may be out of your norm and comfort zone, but I still recommend giving it a try. I got the half and half, and both sauces were amazing. All the unique flavors on the menu, I can't wait to try more. The inside of the restaurant looks really nice, I look forward to going back to eat in.
google avatar

Jocelyn N.

Yelp
This is one of the most unique places to get pizza in Pittsburgh for sure. Not many places have Detroit style pies and they do it perfectly. Whether you want traditional toppings or a pickle pie -- which comes with garlic cream sauce, ricotta, local honey and pickles -- you can't go wrong. The Strip District location also has pasta on the menu! Friends and I stopped in for lunch and split the pickle pie (it was Picklesburgh weekend so we stayed on theme) and we also split their chips and spinach-artichoke dip. The appetizer really surprised us -- the portion was huge and the chips are seasoned so well. The pickle pie isn't as pickle forward as you might think -- the pickles add a nice fresh crunch and I just love the crispy edges of the crust and the airy doughy middle. It's perfection.
google avatar

Tim S.

Yelp
5 booths, 12 seats at the bar, and strip district parking make this place challenging for dine in. That said people and pizza are great. Stop by it won't disappoint.
google avatar

Larissa K.

Yelp
A great date night vibe for an elevated pizza experience! I tried the gluten free pizza: I was shocked and thoroughly impressed by the quality - tasted just like a regular pizza! The detroit style is a deep dish so expect a layer of bread but no lack of flavor. Our server frequently checked on us and kindly provided insight about menu items when prompted. Perfect for a night out in the Strip District!
google avatar

Alex R.

Yelp
The pies are to die for! The service was great and fast. The atmosphere is good. You have to make a line outside the place to dine-in no reservations allowed. Definitely one of my top three pizza places in Pittsburgh
google avatar

Jim S.

Yelp
The pizza was awful. It was like a doughy mess with canned sauce in it. It was undercooked and almost inedible. We are a few pieces since we were hungry. Both of us had a stomach ache after eating it.

Ralph B.

Yelp
Excellent! I've tried several pies, pastas, sides, everything is delicious and crafted perfectly! Was hesitant to try the pickle pie, but it is wonderful, possibly my new favorite! The onion dip is a must try! Food and service are always top notch!
google avatar

Brittany R.

Yelp
Great pizza! Would highly recommend. only wish the place had more seating! luckily when we got there, they had some bar seating open. Service was good.

Yelp
Pittsburgh locals (yinzers) swear by their classic pizzerias (of which there are no shortage) such as Fiori's, Beto's, Mineo's, etc, but this new comer has quickly become my favorite pizza place in the city. While it may be considered sacrilege here to not award this title to the classics, the younger generation will agree that this is one of the best pizza spots in town. What to get: Iron Born serves Detroit deep dish pizza with crispy edges. You can't go wrong here, every pizza is fantastic. Origins: This place opened as part of the Smallman Galley food hall (I believe around the mid-2010's), then opened it's first standalone location in Millvale (no seating at this location but order a pie and head to the brewery down the street to eat it), opened it's second location (this one) back in the Strip District down the street from where it began.
google avatar

Luis M.

Yelp
The pizza was amazing. Well decorated from jump street. The pizza itself was well baked. Not too much cheese or bread. It looks like a lot of sauce but well balanced. Flavorful. Didn't stay inside but looked like a Cool spot to eat. Good amount of drinks. Staff friendly and welcoming
google avatar

Candace S.

Yelp
We were greeted as soon as we popped in! This place has a nice modern feel, with some light rock playing on the speakers. There are two TVs on the wall, playing sports, and the servers were very attentive. Let's get into this pizza!! If you like a crispy, crunchy, buttery pan style crust, look no further. The pizza is served Detroit style, and the red top has the sauce on top. We built our own red top pizza, and it was great. The pizza had a slight cheese pull and we got somebveggies baked in for extra flavor. We added some Mike's Hot Honey on top to give it a little sweet kick! Five Star Pie! We will return and try the Nashville Chicken!
google avatar

Hina K.

Yelp
One tip - go in a group so you can order lots on the menu and try different items! The line to get seated moved fairly quickly. We were originally told 40 mins and there were ~10 people in front of us but we got in within 20 minutes. The menu has A LOT to choose from so it was difficult to narrow it down but here is what we ordered: - Wings with sweet and tangy sauce - I would 100% order this every time. It was AMAZING. The sauce was incredible and each wing is both the drum and the flat (so it's almost like you are getting 12 wings) - Mac and cheese - I would skip this next time. The flavor was fine but it was a little dry and it wasn't my favorite. - Classic pie - I love roasted tomatoes so I loved this. It's a great classic pizza. I would love for them to add just a littttle more basil. - Buffalo chicken pie - SO delicious. the ricotta and the ranch on top was *chef's kiss*. I've had some buffalo chicken pizzas where the buffalo sauce is too much or too overwhelming and this was not at all. This was perfect. - Spinach artichoke pie - if you love spinach and artichoke dip, you will love this. highly recommend! I would love to eat that garlic cream on anything
google avatar

Halie G.

Yelp
Delicious pizza! Detroit-style pizzas, homemade pastas, wings & cannolis! Had the cheese and white pizza and both were amazing! The Strip District location is dine in or take out, Millvale is take out only! Highly recommend getting some pizza!!!

Jenny D.

Yelp
This was our first time at Iron Born Pizza and we were both unimpressed. Here's our thoughts: - The food is just okay. We both got pizza which is Detroit style btw. My partner got the white pie and thought it lacked flavor. There was a mountain of greens on top of the pizza but other than that it just tasted like dough. I built my own pizza which included a red sauce, pepperoni, hot honey, basil, and ricotta cheese. They did add a ton of ricotta to each slice but it lacked in basil and honey- which was disappointing because every topping cost $2 each on top of the $16 for the dough. Similarly to my partner, my pizza also lacked flavor. - The restaurant did not have AC... only ceiling fans. So prepare to sweat as the pizza ovens make it extra toasty - Seating is pretty uncomfortable. You can either sit at a booth which has hard wooden backs or at the bar which includes metal stools with no backs - Service was okay... our waiter was very kind but it took a long time to receive our orders. We visited the restaurant on a Sunday evening so it wasn't crazy busy just took a while.
google avatar

Yelp
Service was great and they have old fashion coke in the glass bottle Great place to go for a dinner or lunch with a solid draft beer and cocktail list. Not a huge dining area however the bar is where to be.
google avatar

Yelp
We stay in the Strip District - and on our latest trip back to the area, we decided to start trying different pizza places starting with a few close. The first we chose was Iron Born, and came in a timely manner right before a line formed. I would say this place's Achilles heel is the lack of seating- with only 4/5 booths and some limited bar top seating. My main takeaway would be to order ahead and unless there is seating, to get takeout and sit across the street in the public areas. We ordered a red pie (pepperoni) and a white pie (tomatoes and lemon arugula). I think the red pie is standard, though it was pretty light. The white pizza wasn't bad, different flavors on top of that one that I liked but wouldn't get every time just based on preference.

Yelp
Coming from NY, it's always a trip to order pizza anywhere else. (Don't get me wrong, I'm originally from California so I do not profess to be a pizza expert.) Having just moved into the region, I decided to give Iron Born a try. Must admit I am thoroughly impressed with this style (Detroit style, I understand?) of pizza and will most definitely be keeping them in our rotation now.
