The 15 Best Kansas City BBQ Restaurants | Eater

"In a city defined by its “melting pit” embrace of miscellaneous meats, there’s something radical about specialization. After a long stint toting his offset smoker around the city in a trailer, KC Turkeyleggman (née Matthew Montgomery) opened his first permanent location last year, where he continues his laser focus on glossy, super-sized turkey legs smoked over a blend of hickory, cherry, and pecan. The most popular order here is the Bussdown Legg, a turkey leg slashed open and stuffed with Montgomery’s gooey mac and cheese (reminiscent of the legs at Houston’s famous Turkey Leg Hut). If that sounds gimmicky, trust that the barbecuing isn’t. Montgomery’s leggs are rich and smoky, with moist meat and ideally crisp, bronzed skin. Don’t skip the sides: The mixed greens (a blend of kale and collards) are some of the best in the city, studded with smoky morsels of — you guessed it — turkey. Carry-out if you can; dine-in space is limited to just one table and a few stools." - Liz Cook

A singular pitmaster obsession: lacquered, smoked turkey legs, including the mac-and-cheese–stuffed Bussdown. Spotlighted by Condé Nast Traveler and Eater; small space, carryout vibe, big payoff. Check hours and go early.

We went for lunch and no food was ready despite business hours stating they were open. We returned later and no regrets for giving them a second chance! Our service was friendly and relatively quick. Our food was excellent and the portion sizes were exceptional. My husband and I could have actually shared a meal and still had more than enough.

Amazing food, very kind and great service, this place belongs in the pantheon of KC BBQ. Prepare to take your food to go as the dining area is only a couple of tables being used for people waiting for orders. Not a bad thing though and worth the trip no matter where you're coming from. Also, super cool guy that owns the place and happy to chat about his success. Great to see in old Quindaro.

Maaannnn…. Where do I even begin!! Delicious and most definitely hands down the BEST BBQ I’ve had in KC! The burnt ends are ON POINT and the turkey legs, ribs, chicken wings on point as well! The sides are too good to be true! The yams, greens, Mac n Cheese, ohhhhh the yams…. Rum cake and banana pudding? Homemade? Definitely will be our new go to! Such a great staff, so welcoming and friendly. You have our business, sir!

First experience here. They had just ran out of turkey legs. Totally fine. We were happy to wait as more were already smoking. We waited for 1.5 hours without any communication. Finally we were told it would be another 15 minutes before they were done. When that time had passed we were then told it would be another HOUR before they were cool enough to be packaged. At that point we had waited over 2 hours and chose to take the refund offered. Multiple people ahead of me chose the refund as well. As we were leaving a new customer walked in and asked about the wait time. The woman in the back snapped at him with unnecessary attitude. He declined to eat there because of it. Hard to want to support this local business.

Packed, but moved quickly. Watermelon juice and turkey leg were AMAZING. Mac and the greens were amazing as well. Will be back!

Great food great service. Ordered the Bustdown and there is a solid 2 meals there. Might be a little pricey but you get your money’s worth. Definitely worth going back and trying other things on the menu.

Yelp
The information on the Instagram page showed the location and hours of business. But when we drove by the closed sign was in the window AND there was a banner that read "Coming Soon" so I thought to myself "that's weird that they are not open". Then looked on there website called the number and the guy was answered the phone said "we're open". And boy am I glad they were open! THEY ARE OPEN PEOPLE! KC Turkeyleggman is a gem! Where I'm from we call places like this "hole in the walls" aka the best non-fancy place to get delicious food in the neighborhood. There are no tables, a few mismatched chairs, a counter and some stools but that is the beauty of a "hole in the wall" because if it looks like a hole in the wall the food is almost always guaranteed to be good. Our interaction with who I believe is the owner was amazing. You know good people when you meet them and he's a great guy who looks out for folks and cares about his community (I can tell). We ordered turkey ribs with fries, mac-n-cheese, burnt ends, & rum cake. I've never had turkey ribs only turkey tips (in Chicago) and this was one of the best things I've ever eaten in my life. They were fall of the bone tender & smoked to perfection. The flavor was indescribable. The fries were fries and the Mac-n-cheese had good flavor; they know how the season food (I just would have preferred that it was creamier in order for me to rate it a 10 out of 10). I hadn't had rum cake in years and it did not disappoint, it was very moist. Can't wait to go back to try more menu items. I was so excited I called my out of town family to tell them I can't wait for them to try KC TurkeyLeggman when they come in town to visit.

Yelp
ordered a turkey leg and a side hate to say this but Ive had better turkey legs at a truck stop plus the side tasted straight out of the box. I expected more flavor than the usual. For $31 this was absurd. Would i order again? More than likely to give them another shot... I expected (but didnt get) what was promised and I KNOW that KC is better than this. SMH
