"Answer New Mexico's state question at Jerry's Café Yes, New Mexico actually has an official "state question"--since 1996, referring to the ubiquitous chile sauce, it's "red or green?" Fortunately you don't have to choose just one; the local way to say 'can I have both' is just one word: "Christmas." If you're driving through New Mexico on the way to Arizona and points beyond, the only town of any size on I-40 between Albuquerque and Flagstaff is Gallup. For road-trip food here, get away from the Interstate and its humdrum chain restaurants. Seek out Jerry's--a block off old Route 66. You can't miss the retro neon sign, and there's often a line out the door for its New Mexico-style fare. Gallup is surrounded by Navajo, Hopi, and Zuni lands--you might well be one of the few non-Native-Americans eating here at breakfast or lunch. The restaurant allows local vendors to come in and show their wares--usually jewelry and bracelets--while you eat. (You can request a 'do not disturb' sign for your booth if you want.) "Hole in the wall" gets overused, but Jerry's definitely fits that description. Nothing pretentious here--but the flavor of the chile sauce is as good as you'll find in Albuquerque or Santa Fe. A recommendation: the flat cheese-and-onion-enchiladas, topped "Christmas" style with a fried egg on top. And don't forget to sop up the sauce with the sopaipillas, saving some of the frybread to top with honey as a dessert afterwards..."

Jerry’s Mexican American Food Café This place was a great find. A small locals spot. Pretty sure we were the only travelers there that night, and the place was packed, but we were seated fairly quickly. Jerry’s starts you out with the traditional chips and 3 salsas. All were addicting. My wife ordered the enchilada, topped with an egg over easy. It came with rice, beans and salad plus she ordered a taquito as a side. That turned out to be enough for at least two people. Everything on her plate looked to be made from scratch and authentic Mexican food, far removed from anything one might end up with from Taco Bell. She said everything on her plate was delicious. I ordered a combination plate that included a chili relleno, a chicken enchilada, a taco carne, that came with rice and beans (I think that might be standard with every plate of Mexican food). Again the portions were generous nearly enough to feed a family and everything was most tasty. But we didn’t stop there. Since we were in New Mexico we had to once again have an order of sopapillas with honey. Hot and fresh out of the oven, and each about the side of a small loaf of bread. We only managed to eat two of the three on the plate. They were outstanding but we had maxed out on consumption for the day. Do yourself a favor and make Jerry’s Café a prime destination whenever you find yourself in Gallop.

Fantastic find! Packed with locals on a Monday morning is always a good sign. I went with their signature breakfast burrito with sausage, & half red chile/half green chile. The staff were very friendly, and the food came fast and the perfect temperature. Delicious! Very reasonable price for the portion. Highly recommended!

People say that when a diner looks like a dive, the food must be great! And that is so true for Jerry’s café. We were visiting from out of town as we drove through on historic Route 66. Holy cow! The food was incredible. I had a taco and my husband had the chile Rellano and sopapilla. The food was excellent. It was served very quickly. And we spent under $20! All the staff were smiling and happy and the other patrons were chatting and enjoying their meals as well. I highly recommend this delicious stop

A Must-Stop in Gallup with Legendary Service! If you are traveling through Gallup, New Mexico, Jerry's Cafe is an absolute must-stop. This little restaurant provided one of the most enjoyable dining experiences we've had on our road trip, and it's entirely thanks to their incredible team. We truly had the best service from our friendly and outgoing server, who consistently went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed. She was attentive, cheerful, and clearly took pride in her work. The highlight of our visit was a small misunderstanding with one of our orders. Instead of a problem, it turned into the most interesting and flavorful dish! We were so impressed with how our server handled the situation. What could have been a disappointment became a fun, memorable surprise that showcased our server's care & creativity. We thoroughly enjoyed our entire meal, the helpful staff, and appreciated the authentic, small-business feel. I highly, highly recommend stopping at Jerry's Cafe. You'll be well taken care of.

Fantastic! We were staying the night in Gallup on our way to Phoenix and this popped up as a suggestion. Originally we were planning to go the southern route back to Dallas but changed our trip so we could eat here on the way back. It’s that good. The green chile sauce is to die for….

Absolutely delicious. One of those places that is frequented by locals. A bit off the interstate, but well worth the drive. The chili burger was devine. The red chili was spicy and had a nice kick to it. My son said his patty melt was delicious and the rye they used was a thick cut bread. The wattress was friendly, polite and prompt. The hostess was nice. All in all, a great place to stop off on a trip and sample some great local food and if ever I am back in Gallup, I would not hesitate to go back there.

This place is absolutely delicious! I have been craving REAL New Mexican food and you can really only get true NM food in NM. I was so worried I would be disappointed but let me tell you what.... This place knocks it out of the park! I got red chile enchiladas 🌶️ they had great flavor and just enough spice. I can't stand when you get a =Ed Chile with no bite at all .. it's just not okay! The beans and rice were fantastic. I got a hard shell taco and I would recommend the soft. That's soft tortilla will help for edible utensils. (If you know you know) We also got the green Chile chicken enchilada and they were b{mv as well. The sopapillas were perfect so I would highly recommend this place. I don't live in NM anymore so when I am in NM I don't want to be disappointed. Thank you Dani for the great service. Sorry also the service was very fast. This is a small sit down old school style dinner. Large parties are going to be hard for them to accommodate. But I went and we were a party of 2 and sat immediately. Get a phone order for a large party because you don't want to pass this up.

Fabulous food ! Old school restaurant that is a diamond in the rough. I had chicken enchiladas with green sauce and they were superb. My wife has the same with red sauce and she loves them. There at least 5 different things on kids menu, and my child loved the rice and nuggets. The soapillas were delicious, fresh, and warm. 4 of us ate with tip for 60 dollars. The whole restaurant seemed as if all the employees were family. Everyone was super friendly and helpful. Don't hesitate to give this gem a try .

We've been here several times as we drive through town. If we hit it right (they're closed on Sundays and the line can get very long at prime time), we try to stop here whenever we can. The place is not that large and there are not many tables -- most of them are 2-4 person booths. I've had several items off the menu over the years, but the staple for me now is the bowl of chile (green) with a sopapilla. That said, you can't go wrong with the Jerry's Special, which has been served the same way since 1976 (hamburger steak smothered in green chile and cheese with sopapilla, beans and rice). Get it with the soup. The soup is a chicken, vegetable, rice soup that is wonderful.

Got here 20 minutes before closing and luckily they were still serving. Had the Chili relleno and it was the best chili relleno I have even had! They sopapillas with honey with the fluffiest too. Fast service and casual dining street parking right out front.

I'm so glad we were able to stop in for a meal at Jerry's during our route 66 trip. I saw a lotttttt of shit online about how good the food is here and I now feel qualified to assert that it is not misinformation. We came in for breakfast at around 9 or 9:30 and I'm glad that there was a table available. The service was great. I couldn't pass up the stuffed sopaipilla and their menu includes a VEGETARIAN OPTION with a garden burger!!! I was so excited to see this! Vegetarians want to try stuffed sopaipillas too! It was INCREDIBLE. It was absolutely slathered with chili and cheese and stuffed with egg, cheese, and garden burger. It was so good. Reflecting on it now is killing me. The portion was massive and there was no way I could even come close to putting that whole thing down. They replaced the coffee about every second. The prices were extremely reasonable. The wait was minimal. I don't have enough good things to say about this place.

Visited 4/11/2024 Dinner Loretta and I, Jerry's New Mexican Cafe in Gallup NM. A small hole in the wall Family Run Cafe. Passed down Authentic New Mexican Dishes to die for. Loretta ordered Cherelle's Choice. A Sopaipilla Stuffed with Carnitas, Grilled Tomatoes, Onions, and Jalapeños with Red and Green Hone Made Chili Sauce. Very Tasty. I ordered The House Made Chili Rellenos Sauced as they say, Christmas Style with Beens & Rice and a Sopaipilla with Honey. That's Red And Green sauce Both. Excellent For Sure. I also had to try A Ground Beef Hard Shell Taco. Also Tasty. All in all Excellent Food and Service. Prices are fair and portions are Filling. I'll be back for more next time I'm in Gallup.

This small eatery is very popular with locals. There are always people waiting before the 8am opening time. Instead of tortilla, most meals come with a freshly baked sopapilla and honey for drizzling. Other than that, I don't find the food any better than many other local places.

What a pleasant surprise! We stayed in Gallup on a long road trip so breakfast was just a stop on the way. But if we come back through we will make an effort to come here. I'm pretty sure we were the only non-locals in there which is a great sign that the food is good! Which it was! The red chili sauce chefs kiss I want more l!! I also want to hang out with every one of the super amazing staff. The Helped us order and took good care of us. Made sure we had everything we needed and suggested the best items to try. It had a cozy diner vibe, really retro and comfortable. Booths lining the walls and a few two person booths in the middle.

We are at Jerry's on a Saturday night. We had around a 15-minute wait outside but it was worth it. Great service & amazing food. The salsa was spicy but flavorful. The Chile rellenos were so good. We loved this place & will head straight there if ever near Gallup again.

We were seated quickly despite how busy they were. The food wea served up quickly. Our food was delicious with just the right amount of heat. My only regret was not having both red and green chili as my wife did. If we are ever back in Gallup we'll probably stop by again The service was also excellent.

This diner is clean, offers fast service and a good food selection (mostly Mexican and a few sandwiches). We had a wet-style chicken burrito with green chiles and a grilled cheese sandwich. Both were perfect in every way. The place was packed with locals at lunchtime on a Saturday which is always a good sign to me! Definitely worth a stop off the beaten path.

You must go here if you're traveling through Northern New Mexico. Off the beaten path as the place is like a time capsule serving some great New Mexican cuisine. Sopapillas were amazing along with the chili. My friend had a combination platter with amazing enchilada, tostada, and taco.

The place is small, but service is quick and EXCELLENT!! Food portions are enough that you may have left overs. We had nacho fries, steak burrito (wrapped like a quesadillas) and really good! I would HIGHLY recommend you stop by, you won't be disappointed. There's a small parking lot across the street, we don't see it and parked on the corner, but no big deal.

Stopped here for a dinner on a 3k+ mile road trip, best meal of the trip by far!! By far some of the best food we've had out in memory! Service was great, place was small & busy but had a nice ambiance and very efficiently run. Good portion size and fairly priced. We will stop anytime we are in the area. Food was amazing, we got everything from tacos to soup and salad to tamales and all of it was delicious. The bread/sopaphilla (might've misspelled that) was the best we've ever had, everywhere else is too dry and tasteless while this had flavor and excellent texture. The service was very good, sat us quickly and listened to our requests for sauces on the side. They also have very friendly atmosphere and even gave toys to kids for Christmas. Such a wonderful family oriented restaurant.

Add me to the list of believers! This top-rated New Mexico style Mexican cuisine is a legit contender. We had chili relleno, chicken enchiladas, beef tacos with a side of rice and beans. For dessert it was the traditional and homemade sopapillas with honey. Fresh, well-seasoned and delicious. A new favorite stop in Gallup. There is always a line out the door during meal rush times so we ordered to go and ate in the car at the parking lot of the car wash down the street under big shade trees. What a picnic!

A great little cafe with large portions and yummy food. We went during off hours and were able to be seated right away as a party of 2, but the cafe was still very busy. I think it always is! We had two specials others have noted: the carnitas stuffed sopaipilla and the chili rellanos. The big, fluffy sopaipilla with honey for dessert reminds me of my childhood. Everything was delicious! Some of the menu photos on Yelp showed only the American food side of the menu, which was misleading. There is a full "New Mexican" menu with lots of enchiladas, tamales, etc to choose from. The atmosphere is small-town cafe and the service is friendly. A great place to stop in Gallup. We will definitely visit here again next time. Thank you for a great meal Jerry's :)

Such a great hole in the wall and a Gallup staple! Great food, small, cozy atmosphere and always happening. That there may lie a reason for the two stars. Always busy and never enough space, expect to stand outside, or on the city sidewalk for a good amount of time while patrons take their time dining on the good food stop by if you are willing to wait and wait and wait. Or check out any of Gallup's other fabulous places for good NM dishes.

We checked on Yelp for a place to have lunch. Our grandson wanted chicken nuggets and we wanted New Mexican style food. We weren't disappointed! Nice comfortable cafe with the friendliest staff! I had the mexicana a fajita meal with tortilla and soprilllas that were so fresh and amazing. The tomatoes in the salad and dish we like garden fresh. The portion was large and I wanted to continue eating for the taste but knew I would be uncomfortable for the car ride. Best meal!!

We drove in off of I-40 and Ralph who doesn't like Spicy food chose this from "Yelp" because they had American food. Had to park the motorhome two block away and were expecting a disaster. People lined up waiting on the sidewalk ??? Must be petty good? Absolutely the best Mexican Food I've had in years. Maybe best ever. Native inline with us on the sidewalk, who ate there often suggested the Combo Plate. That sounded good to me. Tostado, Beef Taco, Pork Tamale, Two Cheese Enchiladas, beans, rice, and "Christmas Sauce" (half Green Chili and half Red Chili) Maybe the best Mexican food I've ever eaten. Oh yeh... and a Sopapilla with Honey for desert. Look at my photos... I damned near licked the plate. Service by Janell was OUTSTANDING Quaint, cozy, and packed... just the type of place you play you will find on Vacation.

The food is amazing, I need my chili sauce on the side cause it is most certainly spicy but the flavors are unstoppable!!!! The service is prompt and friendly. It is a very small diner so be prepared for a wait even on a week day. But def recommend it is a Gallup icon!

We stopped in here traveling from Sedona to Albuquerque. It was a charming local spot that welcomed us warmly with great service and super tasty food! It was a hit and we were glad to have found this spot. I ordered the combination plate which came with a pork tamale. Ground beef taco, rolled cheese enchilada, a tostada and a HUGE delicious sopaipilla! It was seriously the mother of all sopaipillas! The food was delicious and the red Chile was very flavourful with a nice level of spicy heat. My friend had the stuffed sopaipilla and also commented on the generous portion size as well as the flavor of the red Chile. We ordered a side of guacamole and it was delicious and generous in portion as well. The garnish of lettuce and tomato looked and tasted fresh. I would definitely recommend and stop here again

WOW, what an amazing diner. Free, 2hr street parking. Busy on a Friday noon, with a 10min wait for a party of 3. We were greeted by a host and promptly cared for with waters and the option to order. Quick service for food, a mere 10min. At a friend's recommendation, I ordered the stuffed sopapilla with both green red chilis. What a stunning display of flavor (mild heat, hints of sweet and sour) and texture (creamy guac/beans, fluffy sopapillas). More than twice the size of a portion in Boston. No bloating or stomach/reflux issues at all! My friend got enchiladas and thoroughly enjoyed them. Will definitely stop by on a future trip.

EAT LIKE A NEW MEXICAN! We made it 825 miles today to the border of Arizona. To celebrate we pulled into Gallup to have dinner at a place called Jerry's. This is a spot that serves the local cuisine, which I can only really call "New-Mexican". You've heard of Tex-Mex? Well check out New Mex. lol Green Chilies. Eggs. Cheese on everything. Sloppy sauce. Burn your face off salsa. The fluffiest and most delicious sopaipilla in history. It's a wild mix of flavors and ingredients. I can't imagine a meal like this is less than 3,000 calories. Seriously ridiculous. In Gallup nearly 50% of the people are Native American. This night at Jerry's my partner and I may have been the only people who weren't. I never felt odd a second. The smiles, customer service and old fashioned hospitality made us feel right at home. I'm not sure if I'm cut out for the sloppy, spicy, cheese topped carb filled decadence of New Mexican cuisine, but I wouldn't blame you if you were. If you've never had something like this make sure you do. It's a experience!

We adore this place and look forward to eating here EVERY TIME we come through town. We ate there last night and this morning. This restaurant comes highly recommended by our friends from Gallup. Stopped by driving cross country and happened to be in Gallup at lunchtime. Had a 20 minute wait, but well worth it. I got one of the combo plates and the food was excellent. It's a small place. The ambience is old fashioned diner.

Hands down our favorite meal and dining experience in New Mexico. This little cramped diner is old school and makes it work. The customer service we got from our waitress was probably some of the best we have ever had, and bad on us that we didn't even get her name. My chile rellenos were spot on. Not heavily battered, and as you can see from my pics, given a true Christmas-style chile treatment. The red scored a victory on this one. All of the food came out hot and quick, served with a smile and some info on the chiles. The sopapillas served with our meal were hot and airy, with good flavor. They didn't even need honey, not that that stopped me from laying it on. Best meal of the NM leg of our trip for sure - even compared to some excellent dining in Santa Fe. Thanks, Jerry's!

We were driving east on I-40 and bookmarked Jerry's Cafe prior to our trip. Reading all the positive reviews we were excited to have a late lunch and stopped in about 3:15pm on a Wednesday afternoon. As others have stated it is a small building but they make the most of the space with about 17 booths which either seat 2 or 4 comfortably. There are also two larger booths at the front. We were immediately greeted and seated. The place was packed but we saw two small booths open. Our drink orders were taken and we were provided menus. EVERYTHING sounded absolutely delicious! My wife was anxious to try the sopaipilla and ordered two immediately before we placed our lunch order. The sopaipillas were delivered quickly with a bottle of honey. My wife absolutely loved them! We inquired about the heat of the red and green chilis and our server offered to bring us samples of each so we could make our decision. We both really liked the green chili, it does have a bit of a kick. The red chili is also very good and milder in heat. My wife decided to try Jerry's Stuffed Sopaipilla with the red and green chili on the side. I ordered Jerry's special with no beans and green chili. My meal also included either soup or salad and I choose Jerry's soup. Our food arrived in a timely manner and looked fabulous! The food was delicious, the service was above average and this is a must stop in our opinion! It is also very affordable which is always appreciated!

Service was fast, friendly and attentive. I am normally team green, but the red chili here was so flavorful that I enjoyed the red side better of my Christmas style plate. The flat red enchiladas with beef were good. Loved the sopapilla at the end.

Everything was fresh and sauces were perfect beans ,fry bread and even the potatoes so good. Huge portions. All the ladies were so nice working there. Loved this cafe restaurant. Authentic has heck. Yum. We ordered the huevos rancheros, with red and green sauce and the Chile Relleno con huevos with red sauce.

Thank goodness for Yelp -- that's how we found Jerry's Cafe, where everyone who knows good food eats in Gallup! It was packed (it's tiny -- a real diner-style setup), but we did not have to wait long. I ordered cheese enchiladas. The waitress asked if I wanted onions, I said yes, but there were no onions -- the only reason I did not award Jerry's 5 stars. My husband ordered cheese enchiladas with an egg on top. He was very pleased. We were not offered chips and salsa --- I'm not sure if that does not come with dinner, or what. I saw others received said chips and salsa prior to meals. Honestly, our table was so small, that I'm not sure it would have fit. I would Jerry's again and wish I had some of their deliciousness right now. Oh, and I forgot that they give you a hot pillowy sopaipilla with honey! It had been a long time since I had one of those. Yum. It was worth having sticky hands!

This truly is a gem and it is obvious that local folks treasure it. My breakfast while traveling west was so good I had to return for a late afternoon meal a week later on my way back east. Both their red and green chili are terrific, and their salsa with chips has plenty of heat and flavor. Don't let a line outside intimidate you- the tables open up pretty quickly. The service is friendly and attentive! The atmosphere is classic and authentic Route 66 original retro. Definitely deserves the positive attention it receives and for me it is a destination stop along I-40.

It's hard to tell what you're eating since it's covered in sauce. Ends up with everything tasting the same. The place is tiny and the lines are long. No outside seating.

We weren't going to stop but we were so glad we did. The food is amazing! Busy, but they always seem to have a seat in short order. A local favorite. Worth the stop. Did I mention the food is amazing?

I can't believe anybody gave this place five stars. That was the worst Carnitas I've ever had in my life and I've had a lot.!! The guacamole was fair, but I wouldn't even recommend choosing this restaurant we're just driving through. They must be pretty desperate for Mexican food here in Gallup.

Fabulous Gallup cafe great for breakfast or lunch. I've sampled several Mexican American menu items that were delicious and keep me coming back. My orders came out fast and staff was courteous and helpful. I look forward to my next visit.

I wondered why this restaurant has a near five star rating with almost 600 reviews. The reason is that it's that good! Crowded and crazy busy with take out and customers inside the restaurant--because it's that good. Lots of locals (would love to have this place in my neighborhood!!), but friendly to all. Does seat more than the 20-30 estimated by one poster--more like 50-60. The rice and beans that came with the entree were perfect, as were the enchiladas. Also had nachos, which were really good. Sopapillas with honey for dessert made for a really delicious meal. If you ever find yourself within a couple hours drive, you must stop here!

What a treat. Stopping through Gallup on my way back to Phoenix and I craved some New Mexican eats for lunch. This place is phenomenal. Food was excellent. Got the Cherells choice, pork in a sopaipilla with red and green chile. Sooooo good and huge! The staff were all so sweet. It is the kind of diner that locals eat at, full of friends and family stopping in to talk, chat and get a great meal. It was definitely busy for the lunch rush but I got a table right away and food within minutes. The veggies and meat were fresh and piping hot off the grill. Can't say I had a favorite between the red and green Chile sauces. Support this local business if you can!
