Kerið Crater

It is impressive, especially in the winter when it freezes. Though you might want to be careful not to slip on the ice. You can go all the way down. Parking is free, but you have to pay an entrance fee for the crater. There is also a small canteen for coffee or some drinks.

Not sure what to say it's a big hole.... 600k each to see it. If you have seen a big hole before I wouldn't recommend but if you haven't and have some spare time and money then by all means give it a visit! Definitely don't go out of your way.

Kerið Crater was absolutely incredible, especially arriving right around sunset. Even with the light getting low, the views were unreal. The colors of the crater walls and the water at the bottom were moody, dramatic, and straight out of a movie. 🌋✨ We loved that you can actually hike all the way down into the crater. Walking along the path to the bottom and standing next to the water really gives you a sense of just how massive and powerful this place is. It’s an easy hike and totally worth it for the perspective alone. This stop felt different from everything else we saw on the Golden Circle. Peaceful, otherworldly, and unforgettable. If you’re visiting Iceland, don’t skip Kerið Crater, especially at sunset. It’s pure magic.

Amazing views when weather is good. Entrance 600ISK per person. Do not go down to the caldera without good shoes! In winter all path is covered in ice, we saw people in sneakers- do not do that for your own safety.

Beautiful view even in the predawn light of December. From the rim of the crater the frozen lake below looks like a greenish white gemstone. You can look at it while walking on the pathway around the rim or go all the way down to the lake. This is a dormant volcano so there is no sulfurous smell or smoke. Also the lake may look frozen on the surface but may not be safe to walk on!

Amazing crater where you can also capture amazing sunrises over the crater edge if you time it right. One can choose to walk round the crater edge or walk down to the steps to the bottom. Recommend you must have appropriate footwear such as hiking boots and not trainers. Both routes were very slippy when we walked round and you will be falling over without them!

Was very picturesque but least of my favourite stop in the Golden Circle tour. There were a decent amount of stairs to go down into the crater and the steps were very icey in December. You could also buy a ticket for 600IKR for entry but I wasn’t sure what that allowed access to and I don’t inquire.

Kerið Crater was one of the few stops on the Golden Circle that genuinely fell flat for me. For 600 ISK per person, it felt more like paying for a photo op than a meaningful natural experience. Yes, the rusty red walls and teal water are visually interesting (for at most five minutes) but the crater itself feels small and almost anticlimactic. After being blown away by roaring waterfalls, sweeping volcanic terrain, and icy glaciers, Kerið just couldn’t compete; it felt lame and oddly touristy for something that’s supposed to be wild Icelandic nature. If you’re racing through the Golden Circle or watching your budget, I’d skip this and save your time (and money) for the places that actually deliver real drama.
