The Albaola Itsas Kultur Faktoria is an outstanding example of the vivid transmission of Basque maritime history and craftsmanship. The museum presents with remarkable authenticity the Basque whaling tradition, which once played a central role in the region’s economic and cultural identity. Particularly fascinating is the reconstruction project of the whaling ship San Juan, which sank off the coast of Newfoundland (Canada) in the 16th century. Visitors gain deep insight into historical shipbuilding techniques—from the careful selection and treatment of wood to the complex construction methods of the time. This artisanal precision is not only displayed but can be experienced directly through the ongoing process of reconstruction.

Amazing working museum creating history every day. Visiting this Basque boat building project sponsored by UNESCO was really unique. Even after a decade the custodians are passionate about their big boat...they estimate about another year before its finished and starts its maiden voyage. The museum is cleverly curated and engages visitors through multiple languages. The ship yard is located in the cute seaside village of San Juan...parking along the harbour, or join a day trip combined with a cider house visit.

If you want to learn more about ship building, whale hunting and basque culture, this is your place. It starts with a informative exhibition and ends up in the actual ship yard. Really enjoyed the visit. Absolutely worth it!

The tour is spectacular just the exact amount of time to understand the history of the behind scenes of Albaola. The girl who toured us was amazing and we want to come back to see the update of the boat. You can see the workers in action and all the woood and tools used for the construction. From Florida, USA to here 💕💕💕!

They are building a boat using the old traditions, and a museum of basque nautical history is included in the displays. Well worth the €10/12

Incredible museum and active workshop! Informative displays with English French Spanish and Basque translations. Wonderful and accommodating staff. We rode our bikes and didn’t have a lock and we were allowed to stash them inside.

A real gem. We got the 30min private tour for a few euros extra which gave us nice insights into all the projects happening there.
