Housemade beers & sodas, Texas-style BBQ, live music, patio

"It may go against everything you know about ordering at a barbecue place, but order the smoked turkey here. It is brined for hours until it becomes moist and deeply flavorful. Intrinsic is also a great spot to visit for weekend brunch, when the team gets especially creative with the menu, serving up meals like brisket with burnt-end gravy on a biscuit topped with a runny egg. There is also barbecued jackfruit for vegetarians. This spot is also a brewery, so prepare to order some outrageous beers. Inside is a long, thin dining room with a bar at the front and a walk-up ordering area in the back. A patio separates the buildings, and it has been repaired after storm damage rendered it unusable for a while. The shop sits right on the square in Downtown Garland, so walk around to check out other interesting places when you’re done." - Courtney E. Smith

"The handcrafted beers at Intrinsic come with a big bonus: barbecue available by the pound or loaded into sandwiches. But the brews themselves are reason enough to go. The juicy, hazy Mystery Hops is a perfect companion for sunny days in the beer garden, and occasional collab releases might bring you a Berlinerweisse brewed with Tang or an ube-infused Baltic porter." - Courtney E. Smith

"The handcrafted beers at Intrinsic come with a big bonus: barbecue. Not that the brews themselves aren’t reason enough to go — the Garland brewery recently dropped Mission Mix Berlinerweise, a flavor brewed with Tang and released a limited collaborative brew with Scoop and Buns (a doughnut and ice cream shop) called Ube Baltic Porter. There are also tamer options, but why not go a little left of center?" - Courtney E. Smith, Alex Gonzalez

"At a Garland smokehouse, a signature "chicken fried brisket" reimagines the comfort classic: a 3/4-pound thick slice of oak-smoked brisket is breaded in craft beer–infused batter, fried, and served with fluffy mashed potatoes smothered in burnt-end white gravy. The dish has been reinstated as a regular Tuesday offering (served from 5 p.m. until close or until it sells out), and the restaurant is even promoting itself as the "Home of the Chicken Fried Brisket." The owners developed the item as a deliberate response to what they see as chicken fried steak becoming too mainstream, and diners in a promotional video praise it as quintessentially Texan." - Adele Chapin
