Where to Go Eat in Chula Vista | Eater San Diego

"As one of the pioneers of Third Avenue’s revival, GrindHouse has lead the way with its all-day concept featuring coffee, food, and beer. The sandwich lineup is strong with its killer cubanos and gooey tuna melts, which perfectly pair with any tall can in stock. The coffee program features Coava and Modern Times beans for their caffeine bomb of a cold brew and perfectly sweet Mexican mocha." - Mario A. Cortez

My boys and I had a little mommy and me date and stopped in for apple juice and a seasonal drink. I ordered a banana bread matcha and it was DIVINE. I'm not a matcha drinker, and generally steer clear of anything with matcha but felt like I needed something with less caffeine. We didn't try any food items, but will next time! The sweet barista working (whose name I didn't catch) was awesome. She took it upon herself to put the glass bottle juice into plastic cups with lids and straws for my little guys, and answered the 47 questions my 6 year old had about the Halloween decor and if they had any “brains” in the shop. 🤣

Small, dark industrial vibe with graffiti and skateboards on the walls. I only stopped in for an iced coffee, which was slightly bitter and over roasted. Service was pleasant and fast.

Google
Alloura was great! So kind, so patient and helpful. We're visiting from PB and have a favorite way to order our coffee. Alloura was very accommodating to us. We could tell she loves her job and taking care of customers. Thanks again!

Google
Good food, terrible service, go to any other spot for coffee. I had 2 drinks take over 20 minutes to make and to top it off, they weren’t that good. Dark Horse makes better drinks, the staff is super friendly and no matter how many people are in there they are always super fast. I want to support Grind House because they are a Chula Vista local spot but the staff could use some caffeine to be quicker or just be better at acknowledging the customers.

LOVE the variety of latte flavor options!! And the pastries are delicious - guava danish has been my go-to so far 🤤 Cozy and quiet place, with cool decorations and great staff!

Google
Grind House Coffee is a fantastic coffee shop with excellent coffee and friendly baristas. The atmosphere is laid-back and chill, making it a great spot to relax or get some work done. Their coffee, which I believe comes from the Northwest, is rich and flavorful, though I can’t quite recall the brand. Seating is somewhat limited, but they offer small café tables and bar counter seating. One of my favorite things about this place is how pet-friendly they are—my Frenchie, Bella, always gets a complimentary pup cup with a little dog treat on top! Beyond great coffee, they also have a kitchen serving delicious breakfast sandwiches, avocado toast, and a selection of lunch options. Another highlight is their community board, where locals can post about upcoming events and advertise services like dog walking or music lessons. What really sets them apart, though, is their pricing. Coffee can be so overpriced these days, but Grind House Coffee offers some of the best prices in downtown Chula Vista. Their drinks and food are very reasonably priced, making it an even better place to visit regularly. Overall, it’s a welcoming and cozy spot that I always enjoy visiting!

Google
I really like this spot. It’s quaint, aesthetically quirky, and the staff is exceptional. It’s smack dab in the middle of Third Avenue, making it a great stop on your way to other events, or a nice place to chill for a while and work or chat with friends. The coffee here is so good. Super flavorful, perfectly acerbic, has a great finish. I especially like their lattes. Grindhouse is a must-try when you’re hanging out in Chula Vista! Update: Came by today around 3:30pm and ordered an Arnold Palmer and a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich. The Arnold Palmer was your regular Arnold Palmer, but was refreshing and enjoyable. The sandwich was really nice! The bun was high-quality, the egg was thick and tasty, and the aioli on it had a nice consistency and kick. I want to come back soon and try a few other espresso drinks.

Jessica R.

Google
Great vibes, open air seating whether inside or outside it felt very open. The staff were very friendly and their menu was very versatile! They have all different flavors of coffee, plus matcha, & teas. Everything was delicious. The Matcha is very light and not sweet at all so I needed some simple syrup in mine. The deluxe grilled cheese had multiple cheeses and bacon! The breakfast sando was delicious and had a sauce with a kick! I will definitely come back again!

Yelp
Great bacon cheddar bfast sandwich. Coffee was fair. Service was excellent. Dog friendly.

Yelp
*friendly cozy spot * great service * parking also in the back * casual cool ambiance This place is still a great spot for some coffee or matcha. Service is always welcoming! A must try I. The heart of third ave... My favorite here is the matcha! Casual friendly ambiance.

Yelp
Ordered 4 coffees for myself and friends, they were all delicious! Great espresso flavor and profile not sacrificed for convenience. So the pro: the taste is wonderful. The con: it's a popular spot with minimal seating in SD. The orders were taken quickly, however the queue for completion of the orders long. Be prepared to wait for your coffee orders as it's 1 person making the drinks on an espresso machine able to make 2 at a time.. (kitchen in the back with other staff). General public FYI: No drink orders can be taken over the phone & no drink online order ahead available. Food only can be ordered ahead

Yelp
wow such a great gem that we found on a random sunday. the baristas were nice, the coffee was delish, they def know what they're doing behind the bar. the sandwich seemed pretty simple and straightforward, the egg looked to be kind of thick at first but trust me on this - it's so good!
google avatar

Yelp
Ron and the entire staff including Abraham, Karely, Mina, Jane ... literally all of them have such excellent customer service! This is a family owned business which cares about the community. The coffee is excellent. The taste of the espresso always keeps me coming back. Thank you Grindhouse!

Yelp
Solid coffee shop on downtown Chula Vista! Great solo study spot--plenty of bar seating and mini tables, plus outlets, free wifi, and an accessible bathroom! NOTE: metered parking only (I think 2hr max). I got an iced white mocha--was on the stronger side and less sweet/milky just how I like it!

Yelp
A solidified coffee shop in downtown Chula Vista serving up some great drinks and some amazing breakfast. Just the other day I tried the breakfast sandwich that served on their homemade English muffin and I've got to say that the English muffin is very good. The prices are a little steep on the sandwich in my opinion, but it is satisfying, therefore I would order it again. The coffee is nice and strong and they also have other non-coffee options. The store is pretty small, but they have bar seating towards the back and a few tables towards the front. Service every time I've gone is good with no complaints. I recommend you check them out and try their breakfast sandwiches

Yelp
Downtown Chula Vista has a bunch of good spots to check out, especially when it comes to coffee. If I'm in the area, I always stop by GrindHouse for a dose of caffeine. I really like their Cold Brew, so that's my drink of choice. GrindHouse is super chill with a handful of indoor seating and a few tables outside. The staff is always friendly, too. I personally haven't tried their Sandwich menu yet, BUT the shop always smells good. Lol I will eventually! My sister did try their Grilled Cheese and the cheese pulled was immaculate, so that's promising. See ya latte!
google avatar

Christina L.

Yelp
This place surprised me. The coffee was amazing. Very solid spot. The Food is good to. I will say the only thing was the tables were a tad messy. The restroom was clean. Aurora was really nice. She had a good recommendation when I couldn't make up my mind and it ended up being a good choice. Good walking spot where this location is. Good amount of seating for a small place. Very interesting décor. Parking isn't too bad here. Best time would be to come early though. I would definitely come back and try some more stuff.

Yelp
Excellent coffee shop in the downtown Chula Vista area. I tried their two seasonal drinks: the Orange Matcha Tonic and the Espresso Tonic. Both were fantastic. Not too sweet and very refreshing.
google avatar

Joseph R.

Yelp
As a local I wanna say great job! Cuban was the best I've had in awhile. Coffee was on point and did its job. Place is a whole Chula Vista vibe. Only thing I would critique would be for people that work there to lend a helping hand when patrons ask about certain coffee. We're not all baristas. Hands down though great food and coffee. Still get a five star from me.

J P.

Yelp
Nice place, but unfortunately it takes too long to prepare the drinks. I was not impressed but has plenty of customers. However, I'll like to give a try again. My latte tasted good though.
google avatar

Anna N.

Yelp
This is a nice coffee place in downtown Chula Vista. Gives off a kind of hipster vibe in a good way. Their coffee is good, even though I'm not a huge coffee person. I tried their Moon Drink (matcha + chai latte) recently since I really like both of those teas. The chai flavor was a bit stronger than the matcha in this drink, but I could taste both. Service is quick and efficient. The staff seem kind.
google avatar

Veronica H.

Yelp
I was looking for a matcha drink and I saw they had a banana cream matcha latte. I saw a few other reviews talking about this drink and decided to give it a try. It was really busy around 11 on a Saturday. The place is a little small and it was hard to find seating. The girl working the register was pretty friendly. As for the drink it was around $8 with oat milk. I can say this has been one of the best matcha drinks I have had. My only regret was not getting a bigger size. We will definitely becoming back.
google avatar

Maynard O.

Yelp
Popped in here for a breakfast sandwich and drink one morning. I called ahead to order, but they don't take drink orders in advance. It was ran by one girl and the service was mid and could be better. There was only a couple of people when I went, so the ambience was pretty chill. I ordered the breakfast bacon sando and an iced peanut butter cup latte with oat milk. These were two very good choices and complimented each other. The sandwich was thick and bacon quality was smoky and thick. The latte was chocolatey at times, so I just wish there was a pure peanut butter latte.
google avatar

Yelp
Love, love it!! I downed the hot mocha before I could take a picture. Customer service great, friendly and on it! Nice quiet and intimate setting. Not my first time & wont be my last. Avocado toast
google avatar

Enrique T.

Yelp
Karely & Abe are amazing !!! Food is always amazing. Service is always fast even tho it's busy at times. Laid back environment. Very warm vibes. Banana cream matcha is so good. 10/10 ask karely or Abe to make it. 10/10

Viviana S.

Yelp
I enjoy going here, but unfortunately I'm writing this as I sit at the bar. The barista made my drink cold instead of hot. He was kind enough to give me the cold drink for free, but then proceeded to make another person's drink and take orders, making me wait an additional five minutes to make my proper order. This after I gave a cash tip. So, since he is making me wait I am writing this review. As a former barista I would never do this.
google avatar

Jocelyn S.

Yelp
My friend and I stopped by here for a quick pick me up and so I can get some work done! I got the banana matcha latte and it was sooooo good! I love that they had such a huge variety of syrups too! Next time I'll get lavender! It's also super cozy in there too. I was able to get a good amount of work done without distractions! I'll def be back
google avatar

Marisol A.

Yelp
Came here for a work meeting, instead of having it in office we decided to walk Third Avenue and grab a cup of coffee. Coffee is really good, staff was nice, it was just really hot inside and because it's open doors open windows the flies were hanging out.

Arin D.

Yelp
Very friendly service. Great iced coffee. The grilled cheese was excellent. I would definitely come back to this local coffee shop!
google avatar

Amanda O.

Yelp
Went to grindhouse for the first time and loved it! The baristas were so nice and I really liked the aesthetic of the cafe. I ordered an iced vanilla latte with oat milk and the veggie breakfast sandwich. The veggie sandwich came on an English muffin which you don't normally see. Both items were delicious! I'm looking forward to trying their matcha next time!
google avatar

Lisa H.

Yelp
Great local coffee shop! Delicious coffee with a wonderful atmosphere. Everyone is pleasant and welcoming. I only had a latte, but I will return to try out some of their food. I didn't realize until after I ordered that they had vegan options. I know this may be a strange additional comment, but the music was the perfect level for enjoying but also able to converse easily. I also enjoyed the music, which I believe they were playing Morrissey.

Yelp
Stumbled upon GrindHouse while visiting the San Diego area a few weeks ago and had a great first visit. The place is a vibe from the standout storefront to the cool interior. Upon entering the establishment, I was immediately greeted by the staff. The cashier was super friendly and very patient with all of my questions as a first-time customer. I was a little bummed at first because my husband and I were looking for some breakfast and many of the items we wanted to order on their menu were "sold out" even though we were there first thing in the morning. Although we would have loved to try out some of those missed-opportunity items, the items we did ended up ordering were fantastic. Our order consisted of a - Bacon Cheddar Breakfast Sando - Deluxe Grilled Cheese - Banana Cream Matcha There was a little bit of a wait for the kitchen items, but I think there may have only been one person preparing all of the kitchen items at the time we came in. Honestly, it didn't matter because it was worth the wait. My husband had the Bacon Cheddar Breakfast Sando and, though it sounds basic, the sauce really elevated the sandwich. The Deluxe Grilled Cheese had bacon and crispy onion in it which, again, could have been very basic at its core, but totally elevated the sandwich overall. The Banana Cream Matcha was delicious. Crafted perfectly with a strong matcha flavor and excellent balance of banana creaminess. Our first experience at the GrindHouse was memorable. We would definitely return the next time we're back in the area. It's an obvious local favorite since by the time we were ready to leave, the line to order was almost out the door. If you're considering stopping by, stop reading and head there now.

Yelp
Edgy vibes here at this coffee shop/cafe. Tons of cool decor and art all throughout the shop. The baristas are friendly and offer solid suggestions since there are a lot of good options on the menu. Personally really like the taro latte and the banana matcha. Will for sure be back again soon to try out more of the menu!
google avatar

Christina X.

Yelp
Second time sitting in here. Ordered vanilla cold brew and taro latte. So all of the latte doesn't have espresso, it needs to be ordered separately to make "dirty" latte. Both drinks taste awesome. Service was fast but it wasn't too busy when we stopped at. Bathroom looks interesting.
google avatar

Shay T.

Yelp
I ordered the Carmel latte and a veggie breakfast sandwich and they were both really good . Coffee was very smooth. Breakfast sandwich was hearty with egg, veggies and I believe pesto. The English muffin on sandwich had a nice crunch to it. No soggy sandwiches here. Definitely recommend.
google avatar

Armani H.

Yelp
Found this little gem on 3rd Ave. Got the peanut butter cup latte and it's really good and flavorful. This drink is in the sweeter side so if you're fine with that i definitely recommend it! Their food menu looked really good and would be back to try some. This place has a cool vibe to it!
google avatar

Juan F.

Yelp
The power was out all over town, but somehow this place was spared and I stopped in for an emergency coffee to start my day. They were very busy, admittedly because the entire neighborhood was without power, but they were well organized, and my drink came out in very short order. It was a perfect start to my morning. The menu looked great too, so that will wait for another day.
google avatar

Alyanna M.

Yelp
Cute little coffee spot with a couple tables to study on. Tried the banana cream matcha latte, very unique & tasted great! They had a great selection of specialty drinks, I will be coming back to try more in the future! This is in downtown Chula Vista, so bring coins as you have to pay for street parking!
google avatar

Ka'uhane C.

Yelp
Taro latte is nice and creamy, but doesn't come with any coffee, which I didn't realize until I asked if I could get it made decaf. The pressed sandwich is really good if you're a big fan of mustard too.
google avatar

Tony A.

Yelp
The avocado toast was amazing! I really wanted something heavy with spice. I think it was a perfect way to enjoy my morning. Location is across the street from a few breweries. Parking can be challenging but they have great turnaround time with food service.
google avatar

Nirel M.

Yelp
nice local spot - I usually get the Mexican mocha and it's tasty. The sandwiches are really good too.
google avatar

Silvia R.

Yelp
I love Grind House dirty chia is my favorite Try their egg sandwich it's fantastic . I'm not much of an egg person but this egg seems fried and it's perfectly flavored . Stop by 3rd avenue for good comforting coffee. Great seating , friendly staff and it feels warm and comforting inside .

Yelp

Yelp
Amazing service and the food/drinks are sooo good! Love their breakfast sandwich!! Can't go wrong with any of the menu options.
google avatar

Lorena C.

Yelp
We have been coming here often for coffee and breakfast. We had the worst experience here the other day. We ordered breakfast sandwiches and they came with some sauce not advertised. My husband went up to the counter requesting it be remade without sauce and suggested that be disclosed prior to purchase. Instead of remaking him another sandwich at no cost. They requested we pay for another sandwich without hesitation. So we just threw away the other sandwich. Just bad customer service although. The sandwich's are great btw it was more of the service.
google avatar

Cathy A.

Yelp
Ordered a caramel latte from here...not my favorite. It was too bitter and lacked a caramel flavor. I always hear good reviews about this place, so maybe I just need to try something different. The coffee shop itself is decorated very cool with unique paintings.
google avatar

Candy S.

Yelp
Love walking to this coffee shop. I'm always greeted by friendly customer service and the Banana Cream Matcha is my go to here. My Daughter love their chai latte with the lavender cream foam. Definitely can't go wrong here for coffee or any drink.

Matthew T.

Yelp
Trying different coffee shops on 3rd and this one just wasn't it. first the bathroom was disgusting. ordered the peanut butter cup iced coffee (taste like chocolate milk) sweet Vanella nitro coffee(was very watered down) and the breakfast sandwich which was decent. but for a coffee shop, this one disappointed.

Lourdes ..

Yelp
First time trying this place. Vanilla Sweet Cream Cold Brew was flavorless. Sandwich was OK...

Yelp
Chula Vista Coffee Adventure, Day 2. Came in a little after 10am on a Thursday; parking wasn't too bad (but quarters for the meters are a must), there was no line for ordering but the seating was pretty compromised. Definitely seemed like it'd be a popular local working/study spot, especially with the offbeat artistic aesthetic. There was plenty to look at with the interesting artwork on the wall. Probably not the best place to enjoy a Mommy-and-Me coffee date but I was committed. Their baked goods were pretty much sold out; all they had left were chocolate muffins and some kind of unmarked scone. I wound up just getting a bagel with cream cheese, to my little one's disappointment. I got a large Iced Peanut Butter Cup, which I was informed came with four shots of espresso. When I asked if it could be made half-caff, I was informed that their machine only serves doubles...it didn't quite math out well in my head, so I just went all in. Their espresso was delicious, strong but smooth with a really interesting flavor profile. The peanut butter cup drink was rich and sweet, and somehow didn't make me jittery. My toddler's plain bagel was a plain bagel with a very generous amount of cream cheese. All in all, it wasn't a bad experience, just not one I could easily share with a little one.

Yelp
Grindhouse is located in Chula Vista's Third Avenue Village, which is a quaint little area with many small outdated looking shops. Btw, parking is metered on that street, and even the meters are outdated so make sure you have some coins lol! This coffee house is a nice modern addition amongst the other shops, small but very nice and cozy! They have lots of motivational messages around the interior, very good vibes :) food ordered - americano: good americano as expected, slightly tart! asked for 1.5 pumps of sugar free vanilla - bacon cheddar breakfast sando: loved this!! the english muffin is house made, and is one of the best english muffins I've ever had! soft yet crispy on the outside. The egg, bacon, and chipotle all worked well together. Overall, so delicious! Only thing I wish is that is was bigger lol :)

May L.

Yelp
I was in the area and wanted to try something new. I was so happy with the customer service the team provided to help me narrow down what I wanted to try. I was wowed by their Turkey Pesto sandwich. A must try item!
google avatar

Karlie L.

Yelp
GrindHouse has been my go to spot in San Diego for years now. You won't find a better matcha in San Diego! I'd recommend the iced matcha with banana cream cold foam- it will change your life and make your taste buds see god!! The hummus toast is also super good and filling! The baristas are super nice and the space is very welcoming :) 10/10 will always recommend :)
google avatar

Narissa M.

Yelp
Had some time to kill and had brunch at the spot here. It's great to see that they are still successful and thriving amidst these Covid times. Coffee and food still hits the spot, the vibe chill, and the baristas rock! Thanks for serving us well today. I'll be back for sure.

Paula R.

Yelp
This place is underrated! It has a cool ambience, and it is perfect for studying. My favorite part was the bagels. They are so good; seem to be made in-house. I asked for extra cream cheese and they delivered!!! Perfect how I wanted it. I also had their iced matcha latte which I totally recommend!
google avatar

Andrew P.

Yelp
We picked up a bagel with cream cheese and a coffee here to-go before we headed towards the border. The lady who took our order was nice, but other than that, I feel like our bagel took quite a while to come out. It was good though! I wouldn't necessarily go out of my way to come here though, but it was tasty and convenient given we arrived on 12/26 in the AM after Christmas.

Yelp
On Sunday 11/03/24 myself and my wife decided to have a bite to eat and some coffee at this establishment. Our first bad impression was with the cashier. Unpleasant to deal she appeared to be in a bad mood. Regardless we ordered two spicy avocado toast for 9.75 each for us. Upon receiving our order presentation was ok. However their was no flavor whatsoever avocado tasted bland and it was just sprinkled with various jalapeños on top which also had no flavor. Food is extremely high in price for the quality. I would not return to this establishment.
