The Best Sports Bars in and Around San Diego

"This La Mesa standby offers sports bar fare with Asian diasporic flavor infusions: come for banh mi nachos with pulled pork, wonton chips, pickled radish, Kewpie mayo, and Sriracha; garlic ginger wings; kung pao cauliflower; “firecrackers” (hand-rolled wontons filled with jalapeños, cream cheese, American cheese, and Sriracha); and burgers topped with crispy wontons. It also offers classic queso, sandwiches, and salads. The fun, irreverent drinks menu is worth the visit in itself." - Roxana Popescu, Candice Woo, Eater Staff

The hills pub is a fun place to hang out! The food was SO GOOD! I was not expecting it! But I devoured immediately! They have a wide selection of draft beers and different cocktails, that look really good! The arcade is a fun area too, it’s smaller than I thought it will be. Overall, the place is fun and the bartenders are very nice people!

Went last night after work for burgers with my wife. It was around 5 pm on a Friday and pretty packed. The customer parking lot is located across the street. It was easy to find parking at that time. It was pretty packed inside. The atmosphere seemed laid back just a bit loud and crowded. We ordered the garlic pom and el Diablo burgers. They had great flavor, were filling, and not greasy. We would definitely come back again. You can make reservations and I recommend it.

This place was great, I had lunch with an old friend. Was able to order a starter, have a beer, and then a delicious burger. Beware, it's loud but for good spirits loud. There is a game area in the side/back area as well. There's also outside patio outside sitting. Nice place to grab a beer and lunch.

Google
I recommend 100% The burgers are unique and absolutely delicious. I recommend the parm burger and fries. Soon as you walk in the door the staff greets you. It’s a very welcoming environment! So why am I writing this review? Let’s be honest we only write reviews when things go wrong or wonderfully good. So here’s my story:) I won’t state the discrepancy, instead I’ll focus on why the 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. So things went horribly good and I thank the manager Ryland for understanding customer service and seeing me as a valued customer. The Hills should be grateful to have him. Sorry for the horrible picture of my food. I was so hungry I snapped it after I started eating. Either way the plate was left empty.

Google
I live in Orange County but made the drive down to San Diego for a beauty service (permanent makeup—Brows by Jamie, highly recommend! Separate review coming). After my appointment, I was starving and figured I’d kill some time to avoid the brutal evening rush hour. Jamie recommended a pub just down the street called The Hills Pub. She mentioned there were chain restaurants nearby if I wanted something quick and familiar, but insisted that if I was looking for a local gem, this was the spot. I’m so glad I took her advice. Pro tip: There’s a parking lot in the back that leads to an outdoor patio area. The space is split—one side has games and arcade machines for kids, and the other side houses the bar and dining tables. I ordered a mahi mahi fish taco and a “Pomegrita” (a pomegranate margarita). Both were delicious and felt so quintessentially San Diego—fresh, vibrant, and full of flavor. Being so close to the border, you could really taste the influence. It also had that unmistakable local feel—bartenders and patrons greeted each other by name as people came and went. I was checked on frequently, and my water glass never went empty. All in all, a laid-back, flavorful, and welcoming spot I’d definitely return to.

Google
This place is ok. They didn't have a happy hour and only have garlic wings but they offered to add buffalo sauce which we did. They werent the best either. Its very active and busy which makes "the place to be spot" maybe its the lack of other establishments. I may come back for a drink or two but it wouldn't be top of my list. They have a dog friendly patio so that may be the only return reason. Nothing against this place but seems like a locals only getaway.

I had an awesome time at this place! The customer service was top-notch, the atmosphere was fantastic, and the food was absolutely delicious. Definitely deserving of five stars!

Yelp
Jade is an f***ing superstar! Her energy is exactly what you're looking for when you're out and about. Try her drink on the menu too you won't be disappointed. Love the hills, love jade. The service was 10/10. The game is always on and the vibe is always high!

Yelp
Carisa was amazing! She made our night and her drinks were amazing! Would highly recommend coming to the hills! The vibes, food and drinks were 10/10!

Yelp
Taylor's awesome!! Always great vibes, she feeds my dogs and brings me treats too! Taylor has a great personality, is always friendly and upbeat, and is a terrific member of their crew.

Yelp
Fav lil neighborhood pub. It's both family friendly by day/evening & a great bar by night. I love that the kitchen is also QUALITY. not just typical crappy bar food, but actually good grub. The menu is small, adding to the overall quality assurance. Lakesliders are a must & my go to, they hate to see me coming. The staff are always super accommodating & nice, very welcoming, give great service, quick to clear tables, and make good drinks. Cheers!

Yelp
Overall it was a good spot. It's self seating and ordering. I got the breakfast burrito which was delicious and reasonably priced. The food came out at a good time. It was nice of them to bring my friend a shot for their birthday. I would recommend that there be a more obvious sign that you need to seat yourself. It was my first time and I was standing at the front while several workers walked past me. The arcade area is cool but there were a lot of kids everywhere. Outside had heaters. A good place to watch a sports game but likely will be crowded!

Yelp
Recently, I spent a lovely afternoon at The Hills Pub with my dog and three close friends. We arrived around 3 PM on a Saturday afternoon. There was plenty of space, at the time, but it was still a bustling place. We took a seat on the outdoor patio and found a comfortable seating arrangement for us all, including my dog. The staff were really friendly and very nice to my dog. We were actually there about 3-4 hours just drinking mimosas, eating appetizers and catching up. It was early in the holiday season, and I appreciated that they had already decorated. It looked very festive. We had to go inside to order at the register each time we wanted food for drinks, which sounds like a pain, but there was never a line, and each time, it took only about two minutes. We had a few rounds of mimosas, and I liked that they had a large variety of juices. They had more traditional juices, but also things like strawberry nectar. Part way through the evening there were promoters coming to offer samples of hard seltzers a few times, which was fun. For food, we ordered the Kung Pao cauliflower, which was amazing. We also ordered the pretzel bites. Unfortunately, they were a little bit hard to chew and a little too big to be a bite. Since we came mostly to drink, I can only review those two appetizers. All in all, I really enjoyed our afternoon/evening. The staff, clientele, and atmosphere were amazing. Food and drinks were good. I look forward to returning for another afternoon , and trying different food and drinks with my friends at this dog-friendly venue.

Yelp
I freaking LOVE the Hills!!!! I took a little hiatus and randomly went back for a visit, they now have a huge patio with projector screens as well as a giant arcade! This place has gotten so perfect, I don't want to ever leave. I wish they do a menu upgrade, I feel like it hasn't changed forever but my go to's are still 10/10!

Yelp
This pub has a lot to offer. They have a game room with plenty of pinballs, substantial food, drinks, and service with an added bonus of attractive people =) 11/21/2024. Port Mongo IPA 8% ABV: tastes like a Ballast Point Sculpin, but less bitter is better, 4/5 stars. Garlic Parmesan Bacon Burger: this is the burger you need in your life. Full of flavor from the juicy well-seasoned beef patty, the savory crispy bacon, the garlic aioli, and that crispy fried parmesan 5/5 stars! Onion rings: they weren't bad and better with ranch for dipping, 3.5/5 stars. Texas Burger: the best version I've had, as the combination of the blue cheese and the Sweet Baby Ray's bbq sauce just hits different, 4/5 stars. Their service here was impeccable. They are quick, affable, and have a sense of humor. This is the place to be.

Yelp
I went here on my 21st birthday. It was a very fun environment. A bunch of strangers were paying for my shots. The fancy drinks were pretty cool. The food is a bad either, I don't remember as much as I wish I did . The service was also pretty great. This is the type of pub that goes crazy and gets loud for sure.

Yelp
So after a hell of an ordeal getting back to SD, I took an Uber and joined my gf and some friends to help me unwind. We had some beers and sliders and it was an amazing time. The best part of the night is the game room, where we challenge random ppl to car races. Another awesome night at my favorite spot and I look forward to going back.

Yelp
The hills is one of my favorite local spots- good food, good drinks and they have finally added the awesome arcade!! Fair warning- it does get VERY crowded. Also, some people do not watch their kids and you can imagine how that goes. Lots of events- fundraising. Holiday cheer, you name it, this place has it!
google avatar

Yelp
This quintessential pub, a public community gathering place. My first visit was during late night happy hour. They were spinning a wheel every so often that had free shots and drinks! Every visit has been welcoming and social. It's more a burger place than anything, but they have several items on the menu. I recommend the burgers, and sliders. It's a casual sports bar type place with an arcade, outdoor seating and pet friendly. Really chill and fun.

Yelp
I had not been to The Hills is quite awhile and wow has it expanded and even more awesome than it already was! I knew they had built out an arcade section but I had not seen it in person until going over the weekend and it is awesome. We love getting to grab a drink and have an activity, the air hockey table was super fun and kept us entertained for awhile. I love that this spot also has some great craft cocktails as well as a great food menu to enjoy as well.

Yelp
Chill spot in the city of La Mesa. I forgot the name of the burger that I got but it was a croissant burger with an egg. It was good and I got a couple of drinks as well. The servers were very friendly. This would be a nice spot to come to after work and hang out.

Yelp
This place is legit. I was a little worried because I called and they said dogs were fine but when I showed up they said only fine on the patio or arcade which was annoying because I might have went to a different spot since the back patio was closed for the night and the front patio was small and full. But I decided to wait five minutes for a table outside. On the night I came, a Saturday night around 11pm, there was a fight about to break out. The guy who was intoxicated eventually left and got in his car but the police came and arrested him. This doesn't look like the type of place to get drunk at. It's chill vibes. Music is blasting but there's not a dance floor. It's more of a late food and a beer / cocktail or two. Sitting outside I got to talk to the bouncer, Jose, all night and with the server whose name I forgot but was a female and had cool glasses, who was in and out. They were super chill and fun. I really enjoyed them and they gave the already 4 star experience, a 5 star. The menu is mostly burgers and tacos / burritos. I had the pepper jack mac which had Mac and cheese on it and was recommended by Jose and my homie had the breakfast burrito with avocado instead of guacamole at the recommendation of the waitress who said that the texture pulls it together more. She was right. Both meals were pretty fire. Coming from a Black household, I was not confident that the Mac and cheese would be good. It still lacked seasoning but together with the burger, cheese, and bacon, it came together nicely. Fries came with mine and it was maybe slightly salty but because it wasn't a ton of fries, it was perfect. Went inside for the drinks and like I said the music was bumping with a mix of 50 cent, Ye, Bruno Mars etc. it had low lighting that was tinted purple and blue for a nice effect. There were high top tables and booths. About 50ish people could sit inside I imagine. Bathroom were gender neutral and there were two of them inside. Only had a brown nut beer and tequila soda. The tequila felt about right. Like the proper pour.

Yelp
A sparkly gem within The Jewel of the Hills. It's been fun checking out developments and new features from this neat, family friendly, neighborhood bar & grille. The snacks are tasty. All of 'em. We're always in for at least an order or two of their Kung Pao Cauliflower and/or Brussels Sprouts appetizers when available. Burgers and sliders are great too. Back in the day, the kiddos really enjoyed stopping by on a Saturday morning in pajamas at the build-your-own waffle bar. Service meets expectations even when they get very busy. Drink orders are prompt and food usually arrives together. Our friendly servers check up on refills and to make sure we have what we need. A recently added game room looked great. Neat variety of arcade and pinball machines for gaming options at the bar. Nicely done. The Hills is one of my favorite local barcades.

Yelp
Taylor was an amazing server! The food was so delicious I can't wait to come back and try other menu options. The beer cheese was the tastiest dipping sauce I have had in a very long time. 5 stars!

Yelp
Carisa was amazing! Took great care of us & served us great drinks! Would definitely come back!

Yelp
Sat at the bar for dinner. Great food and outstanding service. Our bartenders Nicole and Iliah made us feel like family. Such a great night.

Yelp
You would have troubling guessing, given how quiet La Mesa Boulevard is on a Saturday, that inside this one nondescript door awaited a lively, noisy, busy, and incredibly fun pub, The Hills Pub. I was there a couple of Saturdays ago because I heard their pub food was, God forgive me, 'elevated,' but elevated it was, enhanced by Jade, one of the best bartenders I've ever been served by. There were probably about a dozen of us at the bar, each with our own dietary and time-management needs, and Jade danced circles around her patrons. The energy was infectious. And when bartenders take the time to know your name, it's endearing. And fun. And Jade is both. Despite her burger suggestions, I stuck with my first choice, the El Diablo Burger (but I still love hearing what the staff eat). I literally felt my serotonin getting erect when I took my first bite. The moist 6-8oz patty was slathered in a kind of Serrano Jam Puree that satisfied every primal urge I could bring and it was a wonderful thing. (Though I'm still curious how a fresh, medium-well burger can be served in, I'm guessing, less than three minutes.) The place was packed. And I liked that there were all kinds of age ranges. There was a sense of community more than anything and it should come as no surprise that this bar stands over the last couple of decades (give or take) where others fail. This is, for sure, a keeper. Great job, guys! (P.S. The one criticism I do have, just because it's so weird and icky that it bares mentioning, is the hat the bar back was wearing; it had a rifle emblem with the words 'pedophile shooter.' Um. Awkward. And real inappropriate for a place selling us on fun and good times.)

Yelp
Nothing but love for the Hills Pub! Met up with friends on a Saturday afternoon and the atmosphere was lively but comfortable. They have QR codes where you can order and pay from your phone which makes coming as a group so much easier. Food was great and the prices were reasonable! I got the bahn mi nachos and they were perfection. The meat was so tender on top of wonton style chips. It was a huge portion but it was so good I ate it all. Service was great and we were both offered free cookies and Jell-O shots. Who can say no to free Jell-O shots? So much fun!

Yelp
Came here for the 1st time with friends on a Friday night, and the place was packed! Luckily, we didn't have to wait long for a table, and the wait was worth it. Absolutely Outstanding! From the food to the service to the arcade games, my husband and I are already planning a 2nd visit. Pros: * Excellent Food - Recommend Amy's Buffalo chicken fries & Garlic Parm Burger * Super friendly staff who were constantly checking in with us * Very clean bathrooms * Great atmosphere * Fun arcade - Pinball, racing, hoops, Pac-Man, dance game, golf, nice selection for a small space Cons: * No one seemed to be in charge of cleaning the arcade, so it became kind of trashy. When we first got there, we killed time in the arcade while we waited for our table, and it was nice. After food, we went to play more, and it was trashed. Popcorn on the floor, empty drinks, trash, and half eaten food on the tables, too. We didn't stay long the 2nd time. Extra: * QR codes on the table make for easy ordering. You can even leave your tab open in case you want to keep ordering. * Practically no parking. We were able to find a spot down a side street.

Yelp
Manny and Faith are the best bartenders that I've experienced in a long time. Their service, inviting spirit and attentiveness was refreshing. I'm a regular at The Hills, and I will be for a long time. One of the best gems in La Mesa.

Yelp
First time here. Came off of a friend's recommendation and was glad I did. We sat outside with zero wait and was served quickly. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. My friend said I had to try their burgers, so I went with their "Texas" burger and it was great. I'm a sucker for almost anything with BBQ sauce. I eat gluten-free so I had to remove the onion rings, but I was very excited that they offered a gluten-free bun that actually tasted good. So many gluten-free options are usually taste free, lol, but this bun held up, which is something I don't always find. I went with the sweet potato fries and they made for a great alternative to regular fries. I did not go inside, but it looked really chill and had a really good "locals" vibe to it. I'll definitely come back when in the area. The only negative (but not big enough from keeping me from going back) is the parking. There's not a lot available and I was on the street but that's pretty normal and San Diego.

Drew S.

Yelp
I have typically had a good experience here. Unfortunately, this time I was served the skimpiest margarita I have ever seen and waited 30 minutes for an order of to go sliders that we're not prepared for "to go". It sadly made me regret my tip and makes never want to come back during any time besides the mornings when it slower. Total bummer

Yelp
The California burrito is sooooooooo greasy. The carne asada is weird. Not good. Get burger

Yelp
I love this bar. Food is good, drinks are unique and delicious. Staff is great, the new arcade and outdoor space is nice. I come here alone and with friends. My favorite bar in La Mesa.

Yelp
Visited The Hills Pub over the weekend. The Hills Pub is a nice, chill, neighborhood bar. Ordered the lakesliders which was surprisingly really good! I also orders the tajin-age dirtbag drink (also really good and refreshing). They have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating . If you have kids or love playing arcade games, they have a connecting space next door to visit. Overall, it was a great experience, will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
I absolutely love the hills! Jade understands the assignment. She helped our entire party and she looked out for us! If you want a good time then be sure to go to this spot!

Yelp
Wow! First time here. Service was amazing. Drinks were amazing. Music was on point. Kari Ann, Faith and Madison were the best. Will def be returning

Yelp
Okay, I'm shocked to see that my last review for The Hills was in 2015. I honestly can't believe that they've been around that long - time flies! Well, there is a reason that a place like this still continues to thrive as a neighborhood favorite... they continue to reinvent themselves. If you haven't been to the Hills in a minute or two you'll instantly notice they're most significant upgrade, which is a badass little arcade. This little arcade doesn't interfere with the main bar or the patio. In fact, the arcade has a bartender dedicated to the space, serving drinks and taking food orders making sure you don't need to go far for a refreshment. You'll love this little arcade, I promise! The food is great. Always has been, always will be. So, if you're trying to avoid a place like Dave & Busters but still want to have some childhood-style fun, The Hills is your new favorite spot!
google avatar

Bree A.

Yelp
Solid burger and beer place. The server was so quick and kind. All the staff were very welcoming. The Hills burger was so flavorful and the caramelized onions were amazing. Awesome outdoor patio and connected arcade make for an all around great time. Halloween decorations are also really festive and fun. Tons of street parking at opening.
google avatar

Yelp
Relax at the Hills. I was looking to Chill and visited late Sunday for a snack and a little FB. I love this place, not only because of the great drink and food but it's the staff that makes the difference. We were lucky to have Haley who's just really nice. She made us feel welcome and even brought some treats for our guests. The Mike Hess October release was perfectly paired with the cauliflower. Delish. Thank you Haley and thank the Hills.
google avatar

Bev M.

Yelp
We love the Hills! I used to book their semiprivate closed patio room for all my lady's brunch events. Sadly, they closed that area. They expanded the outdoor patio and opened a new side of the restaurant with video games, modern bathrooms, and another bar. This space is not only for the kiddos if you want to keep them busy, but the adults enjoy it. The Hills is dog-friendly, and my pup loves the burgers as much as I do! The staff are amiable and helpful. They have excellent ranch dressing and a full bar with many drink options. I go to this place for lunch or brunch more often than the night bar scene. Though the bar scene is fun, it gets crazy busy on Friday and Saturday nights. I'm not a sports fan, but friends also enjoy watching sports and enjoying their food and drinks.
google avatar

Jayden H.

Yelp
Great bar, different themed nights every night and a good crowd. Affordable stiff drinks and a fun atmosphere with indoor and outdoor seating. They even have an arcade attached to the bar. Special shout out to Kari Ann, she was personable, quick, and made our night even more special!

Yelp
Are you doing early breakfasts. Just move back and was a regular pre Covid.? Known as the local I loved the mornings with fun staff.

Yelp
Nestled in the heart of San Diego, The Hills Pub offers a charming escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Yelp
Manny was fantastic. He was so attentive to my birthday. Everything I wanted he made sure I got. While that is not expected he made me feel special there. Thank you for making my 29th memorable.

Yelp
So I have not been to the Hills in a bit. It's always crowded which is good if you're judging by hipness. But what the heck? Why did you get rid of the sweet potato fries? It was the best thing on the menu. Tatter totts are for 8 year olds! The service is still top notch. Our Server Jade was great. One of the best I've ever had. She asked our name and called me by name all night. That's how you do it. I'll be back, for the service, not the tots!

Daniel H.

Yelp
The SERVICE was catered towards us because we created a connection with Jade. She was awesome, kind, and if YOU like your liquor served to you by a beautiful women. WE want YOU. Come on up babyyyyyy

Yelp
Came here with my cousin for a girls night! It was walking distance from her place and thought why not. Our server made us feel so welcomed and recommended all the local favorites! It was so GOOD! Now back again and the food is just so damn good! My favorite drink the Mango to Mexico! Literally tastes like a jolly rancher! Another favorite is the Lakesliders and The California Dreamin with Mahi instead of chicken! Definitely a vibe here!

Yelp
Best bar ever! Great vibes a must go! Crew was on point and I was never thirsty! Cuz I be thirsty !! Jade was dope!

Yelp
Was visiting a friend in La Mesa- this is one of his favorite spots he goes to for food and good drinks. I can see why- it was a cool little spot- serves food pretty late which is always nice and hard to find these days. I got the chicken strips and fries and they were actually legit lol. The only thing I wish is that they had Coca-Cola products instead of Pepsi lol. But I mean- obviously that is all personal preference. Bartenders were very kind also, always checking in.

Yelp
Had a rad time here! Shout out to my friend Britt for suggesting this spot and choosing some fantastic dishes to share. The location definitely stands out from either side of the street. There's a parking lot with a few spots in the back. Otherwise, you're sure to find parking out front or on a side street. The concrete parking barriers are colorfully painted. Plenty of outdoor seating in the front and back, plus high tops, booths, and a bar inside. Great vibes. You could feel the fresh air coming in from the "garage doors" out front. Not too stuffy and well spaced out despite all the patrons inside. Very friendly service. You begin by opening a tab at the register. Upon receiving a number, you can place orders with anyone. With all the folks, you will have to be diligent about getting a server's attention during busy times. I adored all the food items we shared: Carne Asada Fries, Sliders, and the Sticky Wings. All super well prepared. Excellent flavors. Overall a great spot to go to in LA Mesa.
