Matteo - Review - Downtown - Salt Lake City - The Infatuation

"This Italian hotspot is an ode to ancestral recipes, and both the owner’s parents help out to create Matteo’s signature dishes. Don’t miss the bread service with focaccia baked by Matteo’s mother, the housemade pastas like lasagne al ragu and tagliatelle alla bolognese, or the parmigiano reggiano-topped risotto modena. Matteo’s recently moved downtown, expanding into a larger location with a beautiful bar, private dining room, and complimentary valet service. It’s also now across the street from the historic Capitol Theatre, making it a perfect stop for pre-ballet bites." - Jenny Willden

Not only is their menu interesting and authentic, but their service is truly exceptional. The waitress brought clean cutlery between each course and she always topped off our water glasses. The food was very fresh and flavorful; I had the paccheri alla vodka—one of my favorite pasta shapes to buy, but one that I’ve never seen in a restaurant. I loved the moderately quiet atmosphere!

We went to this Italian restaurant in Salt Lake City for dinner with friends, and everything was just perfect. We started with tuna tartare, carpaccio, and brie with cranberries and walnuts — all delicious. For mains, we had pastas, which were excellent as well. Drinks, food, desserts, and presentation were all spot on. A huge thanks to our server Max, who took such great care of us and made the evening even more enjoyable. Highly recommended!

Service from Bruno was top notch tonight! I found this gem via yelp of course, and the reviews don’t do it justice. Bruno knows the menu inside and out, even suggesting a special not listed after finding out I’m gluten free. His wine suggestion was also spot on. I’ll have to ask for him next time I’m here. The vibe is nice, a bit on the dark side for my tired eyes tonight yet the service really took the experience over the top for me. Gratzi…Excellente!!! I’ll be back.

Pastas varied too much with the bolognese being the best. Aragusto was just ok and aglio olio was bland. The beef stew was pretty tough. Waiter was friendly and all but felt rushed to finish. Many we just came in too late.

Decent. The seafood pasta that I got was mediocre, but I signed up for that getting seafood in the center of Utah. Service was attentive and friendly. The atmosphere is alright. Overall an okay experience. They did bring out a complimentary dessert for my anniversary, so that was kind. I believe there is better Italian in the area.

Matteo’s in Salt Lake City is an absolute gem! The Italian cuisine was nothing short of phenomenal—especially the lasagna, which was rich, flavorful, and hands-down one of the best I’ve had. The drinks were crafted perfectly, and ending the night with a stiff, smooth limoncello was the cherry on top. The atmosphere had a great vibe—inviting, classy, and relaxed all at once. Major shoutout to the wait staff as well—attentive, friendly, and on point from start to finish. Can’t wait to come back!

Google
Matteo's is hands down one of the most authentic and memorable Italian dining experiences I've had in a very long time. From the moment you walk in, the ambiance transports you straight to a cozy trattoria in Italy--warm, inviting, and just the right amount of elegant. The service was impeccable. Every member of the staff was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive without ever being overbearing. It's clear that hospitality is a priority here, and it made the entire night feel special. Let's talk food. The house-made focaccia with garlic butter? Unreal. Fluffy, warm, perfectly salted, and that butter... I could've eaten a loaf and called it a night. But then came the cocktails--crafted to perfection and balanced beautifully. Whether you like something classic or want to try something unique, their cocktail menu delivers, and their wine list is extensive! We started with the charcuterie board, which was a gorgeous spread of imported meats, cheeses, olives, berries, nuts, local honey, jam, and a super yummy chili oil. Every bite was thoughtfully curated. For mains, the filet was melt-in-your-mouth tender, cooked to a perfect medium rare, and seasoned just right with a beautiful sprinkle of fresh Parmesan around the plate. And the Aragosta--absolutely divine. Fresh lobster, mussels, claims, and shrimp in a silky, flavorful sauce over house-made pasta. It was decadent without being heavy, and honestly one of the standout dishes of the night. Matteo's isn't just a dinner--it's an experience. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or just want an unforgettable meal, this place should be at the top of your list. Bravo, Matteo's! We'll be back again and again. (And again!) Maybe next time we will have room for one of their amazing desserts.

Yelp
My husband and I have been to Matteo's 3 times this month. First and most importantly, their food is exceptional. I have been to Italy a number of times and this food is quite authentic. The owner, Matteo, has put his family to work, bringing beautiful and authentic dishes across the pond for Salt Lake City to enjoy. Second, Matteo has built a strong team of true hospitality professionals. Service has been outstanding the many times they have graciously hosted us for the evening. As my husband and I live just 1 block away, we are very fortunate to be able to dine frequently with Matteo and his family & team. If you are reading this as a visitor to the city, I highly encourage a visit. This is not Olive Garden. This is luscious, thoughtful, flavorful, authentic Italian cuisine, meticulously crafted by a lovely Italian family who have generously chosen to share their heritage with the residents and visitors of Salt Lake City. The ingredients are exceptional; imported, and chosen discerningly. In a city like Salt Lake, it is hard to put a price tag on quality like this, but I have found Matteo to be more than reasonable for the quality and portion sizes. I look forward to my continued patronage here, and want to share a special shout out to Matteo, Elizabeth, Joel, and all the other team members who have made our visits exceptional. Great food is one thing, good service another, but getting both right consistently is a monumental feat that few restaurants can accomplish. Thank you Matteo & team for your generous hospitality!

Yelp
One of my favorite restaurants in downtown SLC. The service has always been stellar. It's an elevated experience without being pretentious. Seth is consistently a delight to have as your Server and knows the menu inside and out. Tommy is amazing behind the bar and so knowledgeable. Even the hosts have always been great. I've dined table side and at the bar, always wonderful. My most recent visit I was dining alone and sat at the bar. Started with the Contadina salad which was so flavorful with the perfect mix of pears, shaved almonds, and gorgonzola dressing. It's a big portion and could serve 2-4. Wish I could replicate this at home. The Wagyu Toscano pasta special $36 (think short rib ragu) was delicious! Again a niced size portion, ate half and brought the rest home. Other favorites from past visits - for starters the whipped brie is a must! Ask for extra crostini. Don't skip on this! Polpette, meatballs and sausage also great. For the pasta selections, the Tagliatelle bolognese, Lasagna, and Paccheri alla vodka, are fantastic! For dessert the cheesecake (the presentation alone is worth it) and mousse so good. For drinks, the Espresso martini is great, and again the presentation is lovely. For white wines, the Loghi Toscana Bianco and Fulvia Tombolini Verdicchio "Fiora" were excellent choices. End the night with a Cascina Montagnola Sornione aperitif! Only thing I'd skip is the tiramisu.

Yelp
My son and I wanted to have a nice dinner before the symphony last week and made reservations for Matteo's. We found it to be overall ok. Our reservation was for 4:30-right when they opened. We wanted time for dinner and drinks before the show, so we opted for early dining. We arrived a few minutes before 4:30 and sat awkwardly near the host table waiting to be seated. There were 5 staff members congregated there-casually chatting with each other, some obvious flirting and disregard for us sitting less than five feet away. At 4:30 on the dot, a host grabbed a couple menus, turned around and showed us to our table. It was kind of weird-I get that we were early, but it felt odd to be so obviously ignored until opening time. At our table, I noticed similar staff behavior. There were so many employees, I felt outnumbered. A few of them were standing near the bar chatting with each other, maybe they were unsure what to do. Our server was kind and attentive and a few other folks stopped by to refill water throughout the evening. Staff shortage is not an issue, but perhaps when there are more employees than customers, they should congregate outside of the customer view. The food was good-I had a seafood soup and my son had the lamb. Both dishes were flavorful and interesting. They brought bread service for both, even though only my son ordered it. But I wasn't going to squabble over six bucks (bread is not complementary, BTW). Overall, it was....fine. It wasn't phenomenal, but certainly not a bad experience. I'd like to give it another try and maybe come a little later in the evening to see if the vibe is different.

Yelp
Lovely dining experience. I can't wait to come back! FYI: Matteo has a new location - they moved to 77 West 200 South in Salt Lake City. We had the option to sit at the bar or out on the patio. I was worried it might get chilly after sunset, but the space heaters created a cozy, glowing atmosphere. In fact, I felt warmer by the fire than inside the restaurant. :) Service was professional yet down-to-earth. Our waitress was kind, hardworking, and knowledgeable about both the extensive wine list and the authentic Italian dishes. We started things off with a lovely bread box that had lots of fresh warm homemade bread and focaccia, served with a little bowl of marinated olives and a side of whipped butter. While said to be "bottomless", we only asked for one refill and they happily obliged. (Take a look at my photos - the attention to detail was perfect.) Various options for water, we opted for filtered tap. My husband ended up enjoying two bottles of Menabrea, an Italian lager. I had a refreshing glass of rosé. There's an extensive wine list, btw. After the bread, we had the Polpette Insalati: a few flavorful Italian sausage pieces and tender meatballs, served in a flavorful pomodoro with parmegiano cheese grated over the top. We dipped the bread and soaked up the leftover sauce. Yum. After that, we split the Contadina Insalate, a well-balanced pear and Gorgonzola mixed greens salad with warm toasted almonds and light vinaigrette. Just the right amount of Gorgonzola without being overpowering I ordered Tagliatelle Bolognese - it was tender and delicious. My husband ordered the lovely Ravioli Ai Funghi, made with a mushroom, fontina, and spinach filling, and this amazing Parmigiano cream sauce. His ravioli stole the show, and we highly recommend it. Decadent and creamy. We decided not to order Secondi or any sides, since we were full. I ended up taking roughly half my bolognese home, (and I made sure to put the remaining cream sauce from the raviolis on top). I devoured it for breakfast the next day. :) Overall lovely service -- they offer a complimentary valet service too. We didn't need it that night, but we noted the thoughtful touch of hospitality for future reference. (Especially since we usually spend $15 for downtown valet.) The only minor downside wasn't really the restaurant's fault. There was some nuisance traffic going by. Some guys were driving by with super loud engines/mufflers, which at times disrupted the peaceful patio vibe. Can't win them all, I guess? All in all, a superb dining experience. We'll be back!

Yelp
Tried Matteo's for a birthday eve dinner and it exceeded expectations. The ambiance is modern, chic, and upscale with a sleek design and warm, welcoming feel. Our server Bruno was fantastic, friendly, helpful, and very knowledgeable about the menu. We started with the focaccia, which was soft and fluffy. The fillet was incredible & cooked to perfection. The ravioli that came with it was delicious and complemented the dish perfectly. The kale salad was fresh and flavorful, and the risotto might just be the best we've ever had, creamy, rich, and bursting with flavor. The touch of balsamic vinegar on top really elevated the dish and tied all the flavors together. We also tried the Zibibbo wine, which was absolutely incredible. I see why they call it the nectar of the gods. For dessert, the bread pudding was good and the ice cream elevated the overall dish. The tiramisu was not traditional. The brownie and the cream was delicious, however it was not coffee forward enough. The true standout dish was The Cacio e Pepe! Hands down the best in town. The pasta was thick, chewy, and unbelievably fresh, absolute perfection. Highly recommend Matteo's, especially the Cacio e Pepe, risotto, and Zibibbo wine. We can't wait to come back!

Yelp
Thursday night res at 7:15 the place was packed. Our table for six was small and cramped but we made it work. We ordered the Parmesan appetizer and the charcuterie plate all was good. We also ordered Caesar's and an entree. Service was great food on point. Recommend

Yelp
For the prices here, I expected a much better overall experience. Unfortunately, the service fell short. Our server spilled water on my phone while refilling my glass, and the appetizer plates weren't cleared before the main courses arrived -- we had to stack them ourselves for the food runner. On top of that, the tables are packed too tightly; it felt like we were practically dining with the guests beside us. At one point, the server also bumped into me. I ordered the special of the evening: a ribeye Milanese style. I was already skeptical about ordering a ribeye that would be pounded down and deep fried, but I decided to trust that the kitchen knew what they were doing. I asked the server how it would be cooked temperature-wise, and he told me medium. The steak, however, arrived well-done -- disappointing, given the cut and the price point. The flavor was decent but not noteworthy. On a more positive note, my husband's Filetto, rare, was prepared beautifully and tasted excellent. The cacio e pepe "ravioli" as a topper to the filet was a nice touch. We also both enjoyed the whipped Brie appetizer, which was creamy and had a nice flavor profile. Overall, while some of the food was good, the service issues and poor execution of my entrée made the experience underwhelming compared to the cost. P.S. Skip the Blanton's Gold Old Fashioned. Another one of those, I knew I shouldn't have ordered it items. All the additions drowned out what flavor profile the Blanton's Gold had.

Yelp
Service was outstanding. Location was convenient and food was most wonderful. I sat at the bar in this cool space and enjoyed a glass of wine and braised beef dish. Would definitely recommend this place for anyone looking for something special in downtown SLC

Yelp
went to matteo for a nice saturday night dinner. it is a nice upscale & modern italian restaurant. i recommend a reservation if you want a table on a weekend. i was able to get a seat at the bar pretty easily. bartenders was nice and quick with their service. the hugo spritz was delicious! the contadina salad was simple but all the components made for a really nice flavor profile. they have a great house focaccia. the pumpkin gnocchi was amazing! the gnocchi was the perfect pillowy texture with a great pumpkin cream sauce.

Yelp
Another glorious foodie and drink night at Matteo's! Sat at the bar again and enjoyed - along with five other parties at the bar - the antipasto dish, polpette. Awesome red sauce (Italian gravy!) and tasty meatballs with a bit parmigiana reggiano. The Manager, Matteo, compotes me a surprise dessert, chocolate mousse! Must have been for my previous Yelp posting?! Visit this Italiano ristorante immediately!

Yelp
Holy Italian food, Matteo. The bread? Yeah, I'll take another basket. Maybe two. Maybe just leave the whole tray, thanks. The tuna tartare was so fresh I almost apologized to it. And those homemade pasta noodles was therapy in carb form. Family-run, cozy, and absolutely crushing it. Cute spot, killer food, no notes, except maybe open a second location in my kitchen.

Yelp
Great recommendation from the Hyatt's front desk. Dark moody place with a variety of seating options, outdoor sidewalk patio included. Sat at a booth by the bar. Friendly and helpful staff. The calamari was good, lightly breaded and fresh. Well cooked, tender and not chewy. The buccatini raft delicious. Definitely pay this place a visit. So far probably our favorite meal in SLC, we've been coming here for work a few rines the last 1.5 year.

Yelp
Full disclosure-I grew up eating good, homemade Italian food and my husband and I have spent almost two months in Italy (including over a week in Modena and Bologna, as well as a separate week in Piemonte) the last two summers. We travel for food and wine. We are also originally from the CT/NYC area, which has great Italian and have lived in LA for almost 10 years. Matteo's is....fine. We mainly ended up here because of the promise of celiac safe food. While that was true, it wasn't anything to write home about. We split some apps-the carpaccio was a nice cut, but the amount of cheese overwhelmed the meat. The GF bread was inedible and they charge for it. My husband said the regular bread was alright. The GF pasta was cooked well, but please don't claim to have Modena based roots, cater to GF, and only have one type of it. Different sauces, need different pastas. I will say, at least it wasn't penne and it was authentic to Modena. The sauces themselves were pretty good-not blow me out of the water, but comforting. Our friend that was with us had the lasagna and said it was "fine." Wine list isn't terrible, but it is terribly overpriced, even for Utah. It would be nice to see some DOC and DOCG call outs, as well. I think we saw Matteo himself come out-but it was super quick and short, to two tables, and that's it. Our server and the hostess were absolutely lovely and sweet. Wouldn't go back, but glad we tried it.

Yelp
We just had an amazing experience at Matteo's. It came highly recommended and it did not disappoint. Everything we had was five stars. The menu look like it's worth exploring. Whipped Brie Appetizer - I think this might be a staple for every time we go. It was excellent. My only concern was the limited crostinis they provided. As soon as we were out, they refilled us. All is well. Risotto - it was amazing. They put on top of it Mateo's father's aged balsamic vinegar. It made the dish. Lasagna - very tasty. Especially the crusty edges. The pasta was obviously homemade. Would do again. It was our anniversary so they brought out a dessert that was a white chocolate cheesecake. It was very unnecessary but greatly appreciated.

Yelp
Sometimes you just need a bowl of cacio e pepe with focaccia and a buratta capresse salad. Matteo's does it just right. Servers are part of the family and it shows with table side serenaded and a lot of passion for the menu.

Yelp
-Great service! Craig, our waiter was amazing. So helpful and gave us great recommendations -Huge selection of wine, we got a bottle of Nebbiolo that I absolutely loved -Recommend getting a reservation, it filled up fast -Burrata with prosciutto for an app is a must. Want to try the Caesar salad next time we go -We got a pasta and a protein to share and it was perfect for 2 people. We got the Amatriciana and Filetto -Dessert was amazing. Loved the artwork and it was melt in your mouth delicious Highly recommend for a special dinner!!

Yelp
Dined after hearing the rave reviews with a group of 8. Service and ambience was amazing. The variety of spritzers was nice. The calamari, olives, bread, Caesar salad and desserts were delicious however I don't think a single person enjoyed their entree. Most of the dishes came out lukewarm and especially when it's a seafood pasta that made the flavors extra fishy. One friend ordered the braised beef that was supposed to have been cooked in a wine reduction but she said it had no wine flavor and was tough which was surprising for a braised meat. I had the tagliatelle which came out lukewarm with not much meat sauce for the dish and the pasta was mushy yet hard at the same time oddly enough. I also split the tbone with a friend made medium rare. The filet mignon side was overcooked but much more tender than the other side which was still raw. We had it sent back to sear it a bit but it was still not evenly cooked and extremely chewy. The desserts were beautifully plated and everyone enjoyed the white chocolate cheesecake and panna Cotta. It's disappointing considering we had such high expectations for it and the service was amazing (except for having to ask for lemons 4 times before getting them). The restaurant is beautiful and spacious but maybe they are not suited for large groups. For the price and the quality of the entrees probably won't be my first choice unless we wanted apps and desserts only.

Yelp
I don't like to write negative reviews if I can help it. But I can't be charged $40 for slop on a plate and not say anything. That's the best way I can describe the braised beef (Brasato). Save your money and go somewhere else. Starting with the positives, it was tender. That's where it ends. Now the negatives. Absolutely no depth of flavor. No red wine was used to braise this. No layers. Just uninspired and monotone. Portion size was excessive. 0 fat content. Very dry in most parts. The greens at the bottom were slimey and added nothing but disappointment to the dish. Carrots were alright but overcooked. The menu mentioned a honey bourbon reduction which didn't come through at all. I'm reiterating again. This is one-dimensional slop. I understand this is just one dish but it honestly baffles me how a restaurant with this high of a rating can be content with it on the menu (???). The owner has tried this dish. They know what it tastes like. They know it's not good. And they continue to serve it. I promise you, anyone following a generic recipe can make a better braised beef than this. I'm not even Italian but I just know this is a sad brasato and frankly, it's disrespectful to Italian cuisine. And reading the reviews for the brasato, which go back more than a year ago, say the same thing I'm saying (in a nicer way). Which tells me they just do NOT care about what they serve bc clearly nothing has changed. Just go somewhere else that actually respects food (like The Capital Grille). The host and my server were nice.

Yelp
Great job on ambiance and decor! It was a busy Fri. night and we didn't have a reservation but the maitre d was very nice and accommodating and found us an open table. Our server was great, good knowledge of the menu and dish preparations. Based on her description we opted for the Parmigiana experience, 3 cheeses aged from 48mo. - 100mo. and served with aged Balsamic vinegar. It was nice but not as satisfying as we had hoped, we should've ordered the burrata appetizer like we wanted. We also had the Caesar salad which was very nice, not heavy and overpowering but light and flavorful. I ordered the aragosta pasta which was awesome! The lobster bisque sauce and various seafood were cooked perfectly with the aldente tagliatelle pasta. Loved it. My wife had the lasagna, which unfortunately was a let down. Overall a very good experience thank you Matteo.
google avatar

Christian K.

Yelp
The food here is excellent. Everything tasted homemade, authentic, and well-executed. The bread and butter is to die for. I loved the pasta dishes, namely the Amatriciana and the Paccheri Alla Vodka. The Aragosta pasta was good, but wouldn't order again. The flavor combination of the sauce with the lobster and the herbs just felt slightly off. My wife and I split a caesar salad, and we were very pleased with the size and freshness. The dressing was too mild and creamy for a caesar. It needed more umami and acid, but I still enjoyed it. I tried my brother's ribeye and I think it was one of the best ribeye's I've had, especially for $48. He ordered it medium rare and it came out medium, but it didn't bother him or me. The service was good, but was missing a personal touch from our waiter. Lastly, the ambiance is very inviting and perfect for a date or evening out with family and friends. Overall, I enjoyed Matteo and would certainly plan a return visit for some of the better Italian food in SLC. A couple small improvements will earn them a five star review in the future.

Yelp
The food here was spectacular. I was extremely impressed with the service everyone was beyond friendly and the ambiance was fantastic. I got the special which was a truffle pasta and I chose a gnocchi noodle. I love the mini gnocchis they're so cute. Then I finished off dinner with an affogato and an espresso martini. The white chocolate cheese cake & aperol spritz were also delicious

Yelp
Already planning my trip back here. This place is absolutely phenomenal. From the decor/vibe, to the service, to the food. Every little detail in Matteo is so intentional. A reservation is a must on the weekends. We got there right when they opened without a reservation and luckily they were able to squeeze us in because we were only doing apps/drinks. We started with their fresh bread of course and it was delicious. Freshly made every day. I got their Rosie spritz - amazing. We split their whipped Brie, which was topped with walnuts and dried cherries I believe. Phenomenal. We split their gnocchi and it was the most melt in your mouth, pillowy, delicious gnocchi. The sauce was amazing. The service was incredible, we felt so taken care of and Matteo himself even stopped by our table to check on us. Can't wait to come back here - what a phenomenal experience.

Yelp
The food at Matteo was very good. The server was attentive. The restaurant was pretty full on a Friday evening but I was quickly seated. There is an additional charge for the bread service.

Yelp
Friggin d e m i c i o u s! The staff here are amazing with recommendations, and they thought I was funny, which obviously means they're smart. The place has a fancier vibe but, despite being a couple of degenerates, we still felt totally comfortable and at ease. We had the whipped brie, aglio e olio, brasato, and of course, the panna cotta. Plus, some cocktails--one was a rose spritz, and there was another one I can't remember the name of, but all of it was great. Next time, I'd probably skip the brie, even though it was decent, it was more of a one-time try. The aglio e olio was awesome, but I'd be curious to try other pastas next time, though the brasato was unforgettable. So good!

Yelp
Atmosphere was ok. Sat facing a wall, which I didn't like. Paid for bread that wasn't out of this world. I ordered lasagna that was drowning in sauce. Seemed mushy. Daughter had rigatoni that was fine. Other diner had seafood dish that was light on fish, shrimp was small, but stock. Short ribs were tender. Gnocchi was good. Ordered glass of wine. Never been to a restaurant that made us order everything at once. Waiter was young. Expensive meal that left me expecting more. No Matteo came by our table. Very small heart cheesecake was fine. Other deserts weren't memorable. Sorry but I wouldn't return based on food and experience.

Yelp
food quality: 5/5 service: 5/5 cleanliness: 5/5 value: 5/5 Don't skip on: Caesar Salad, Aglio e Olio (for my garlic lovers out there!) and the Brasato. Loved my first experience at Matteo's! I came with a group to celebrate a birthday and it was a wonderful experience. We ordered the bread service, burrata appetizer, Caesar (so good!!) and Verde Salad, pacchieri alla vodka, cacio a Pepe, pollo, brasato, and aglio e olio. Everything came out at the same time and was so delicious!! The staff was nice and the restaurant was clean. I was a little worried about parking, but they do have complimentary valet parking for patrons, which is nice since parking downtown can be a headache. Can't wait to go back and try more!

Yelp
Fantastic Italian with amazing GF options! Matteo is one of the newer Italian restaurants in town and definitely my favorite! Recently they added weekend brunch and you honestly can't go wrong with brunch or dinner. For brunch, I recommend the mama's bread Italian French toast and the Italian sausage sandwich. I don't usually order sandwiches but the brocollini and sausage paired so well! The uovia in purgatoria was also delicious and basically like an Italian version of shakshuka. They make all of their breads and pastas in house, with the exception of the GF pasta which is imported from Italy. The GF pasta tastes practically like normal pasta, including with texture - incredible! My husband loved the paccheri all vodka GF pasta! For dinner we have had the brasato too which was excellent. Love how they clearly label all GF options. For some of the appetizers, they can also offer a side of GF bread. Save room for dessert, the brownie tiramisu is so good! This is GF as it is too, fyi. Super cute space, and they have a patio. Dinner gets really busy, so best to make reservations!

Yelp
Very classy date night at Matteo's!! We'd never been before, but came highly recommended from our friends! I had a lovely glass of Pinot Noir and my husband and I shared the burrata appetizer, delicious! Zucchini was cooked perfectly and it was fun to try something different! My husband got the pesto pasta and I got the paccheri alla vodka sauce with gluten free pasta, delicious!! Portions were a perfect size, sometimes dining out can be overwhelming!! I splurged and got dessert: espresso martini and tiramisu! Perfect ending to the meal!! Service was great! Plenty of staff!! Gluten free pasta was probably the best I've ever had!! Will definitely come back and try something other dishes. Yum!!

Yelp
I can't believe I've lived in SLC my whole life and never knew about this place!! Not only is it very cute inside but it's also fancy and I would definitely come here for an anniversary or special occasion! Service was alright, he was kind until we asked to split the bill and seemed very frustrated-- he ended up being able to do it but we felt bad for asking. The food was fantastic. The whipped brie was by far the best thing we ate. I would skip on the burrata and tuna tartar. I heard good things about the risotto and that was good, but not sure if I get the hype haha I wouldn't get it again. Their bread and charcuterie was good!! I got the filetto and that was amazing. For dessert i would recommend the cheesecake because it was delicious and the artwork was cute. It is kind of small so a larger option is the bread pudding. I would skip the tiramisu as it was barely any cake.

Yelp
Very nice downtown Salt Lake City restaurant Atmosphere and service were outstanding The food was good. I wouldn't say great. It was good Italian food Surrounded by a few very expensive steakhouses. This was a nice alternative

Yelp
Matteo's came highly recommended to me -- I'm not sure if it was over hyped to me or the food just wasn't that great. The service was 10/10 but the food just wasn't that special.

Yelp
I was craving some Italian food, and I have always wanted to give this place a try; they just relocated from 9th St. to downtown. What a nice place to grab something to eat. The food was very fresh, the calamari wasn't chewy and very tasty. I grabbed myself lasagna, which was good and great portions. The Aragosta was so delicious as well. The bread was really good and is made in-house. I didn't get a chance to grab dessert, but for sure I will come back, as they sounded delicious.

Yelp
The food was so good! The risotto with the parmesan and balsamic was a great combination, not too heavy. The chicken was flavorful as well. Good service, the waiter gave me some good recommendations when I couldn't decide. The restaurant was nice. Would recommend checking it out if you're willing to splurge a little.

Yelp
We were able to get served right away with no reservation. It was a pleasant Italian atmosphere. Lucas did a great job serving us some of the most delicious Italian seafood dishes we've had. If you're anywhere near here, go! You'll be glad you did.

Yelp
For sure a restaurant to visit! The Caesar salad was excellent. The richness of the anchovies completely escalated the salad and is an excellent touch. The Bolognese was just okay. The noodles were great, but the sauce felt more like a meat sauce than it did a rich Bolognese. Would suggest going with a secondary option if you're torn between two items. The heart-shaped cheesecake was excellent. The size was perfect too. It was creamy and the raspberry center helped to balance the sweetness. Will be ordering the ceases and cheesecake again. The atmosphere of this restaurant is beautiful. Great bar, small lounge area and the back room has a door for possibly large party accommodation. Outdoor space looks nice and like it will come to life when the weather permits. Serve was very nice and offered great recommendations. Aside from the server the remaining staff (food runner, host, busser) were very stiff and bit too formal for the environment. Not rude just not very "welcoming".

Yelp
Matteo Ristorante Italiano is an outstanding restaurant that features authentic Italian food. It is in kind of an odd building that looks like a converted house, but it makes the ambiance feel kind of homey and comfortable. I was hear with my brother, nephew, and my nephew's girlfriend. Service was excellent throughout the meal. Our server gave us excellent advice (and sang song in Italian at a nearby table at one point). They have a nice wine list, we ordered a bottle of Italian red. It was kind of a blend of cab and merlot--but just perfect with the food. For appetizers, we ordered the bread service, a burrata, and the Polpette. The bread service is absolutely worth it--the bread and focaccia were fresh and delicious. The burrata was made just perfectly with some grilled zucchini that was heavenly. But we went crazy for the meatballs--they could have been our whole meal, then the prosciutto with the Polpette was excellent also. We then shared two pasta dishes. One was a special with truffles and the other was the traditional Tagliatelle Bolognese. Both were outstanding. With the truffle dish, it not only was served in truffle oil, but then they had shaved truffles over the top. If you like truffles like me, you would love it. The actually pasta in both dishes was fresh and very tasty. Then everyone absolutely loved the Bolognese sauce, so flavorful, you could tell it was simmering all day. Then we had another special, a bone-in steak that I think was a thick ribeye. This was cooked medium rare and was a really great steak, full of rich flavor. We kind of split a large one between the four of us and we all enjoyed it. This was also served with potatoes, carrots, and broccoli that were also very good. For dessert, we split a cheesecake that tasted great and had a really nice presentation. Overalll, an excellent meal and certainly a place I would consider for any special occasions.

Yelp
Mateo's continues to deliver an excellent experience year over year. My wife and I have been coming here for close to 20 years now. We've never had an experience that's less than great. The servers are engaging and attentive, the food is outstanding in quality and flavor, and it is an enjoyable experience every time. The dining room is comfortable to go both upscale or in the mid-range. It is quiet, classy and delivers a fantastic Italian dinner experience.

Yelp
Went on a Friday night and it was booming. The new location allows for more guests, but you'll still need a reservation. The staff was down to earth, and the place was fancy but didn't seem snobby. After enjoying the bread service with meatballs, our pasta came out (it took awhile, but I'll explain). Everything is handmade and you can taste the difference compared to other Italian places. My pasta's consistency was as if it was made literally right after I ordered it. The vodka sauce was unique and you can tell a lot of thought went into every dish at our table. This is a great place I will recommended to everyone

Yelp
Staying at the Hilton next door. Made a choice between Ruth's and here. So glad I gave Matteo a try. Incredible ! Great ambience. Sat at the bar and it was dinner and a show! Capriccio to die for. Pasta specials with black truffle amazing. Filet was perfect. Signature cheesecake was good. I would get the tiramisu next time.

Yelp
Truly is a gluten free heaven! They have gluten free bread rolls and gluten free pasta option (pasta imported from Italy). I was very impress was with both and the sauces were delicious. The seafood pasta was my favorite! The whipped Brie is a must try appetizer, perfect balance of sweet and salty. The service was amazing and the food comes quickly. They even gave us a GF dessert on the house for our anniversary. Will be back!

Yelp
The food was not bad, but was also not good at all. The meatballs were bland and tasted as though they were either frozen retail. The kale salad sounded great on the menu but when I got it was missing two key ingredients. The Cacio E Pepe was not made how I understand it to be made, it tasted like box mix, and didn't have any black pepper from what I could tell. The best part of the meal with the bread and the olives that came in that beginning and it was pretty much downhill from there

Yelp
Delish! Wonderful service. Handmade pasta and bread. Lovely space. Great wine. Loved every minute of this family owned Gem in SLC

Yelp
I so wanted to love this place as I live around the corner and continued to walk by and had been craving to try it. What better way to experience it than to take 7 of your guests for the first time? A mistake. The set up and ambiance is that of a fine dining restaurant. But unfortunately, the food lacked what my group of hungry 8 expected. Of the 8 meals (all pasta) nothing was out of this world. It was standard as far as taste, with a steep price. The Caesar salad was good. But the most disappointing thing to the entire group was the portions. Aside from the lasagna which was a standard size, everything else was slightly more than a side dish...presented nicely. The prices compared to what you get are shocking. The truffle pasta special for $55 was quite steep for what I got...about a cup of pasta. A taster. And it came out warm, not hot. Nearly all of us walked out hungry and disappointed with a large bill. Not to mention that before any of us ordered we asked our hostess about the portion size because we were quite hungry. She said it's definitely a large enough size. I especially asked about the truffle pasta as well and got the same answer. After the meal I mentioned to the hostess that the portions were quite small than how she presented them. She said it's enough for most people, no one else had complained about the size. Is this what you call service? If I weren't with of state guests I would have asked for the manager and offered an opportunity to make corrections or resolve this discrepancy or make it right. If you want to go and impress your guests with ambiance only, this is the place.

Yelp
All the food was delicious--my fiancé and I ate every last bite. We got bread, a caesar salad, bolognese, cacio e pepe, and lemon sorbet. The drink menu provided many options-- we went with an aperol spritz, rosy spritz, and espresso martini. Couldn't go wrong with any of them! It's a lovely, sophisticated atmosphere with helpful and kind staff. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
I can only recommend Matteo's if you are an Italian pasta lover! Everything was excellent and the ahi tartar was to die for. Thanks for the great service on New Year's Eve, our server definitely made it a special evening!

Yelp
Came here for a work dinner and couldn't have been happier. The ambiance was great and the wine list impressive. We tried the meatballs, Caesar salad, the bolognese, the ribeye, and another pasta dish I can't remember. All three were great, and our server was very helpful while we were choosing our meals. Too full for dessert, but I'll be back and hope to try a few soon!
