"This Columbia City lounge has throwback decor, a relaxed atmosphere with an intimate stage, and solid acoustics. Regular shows like Blue Monday are well-attended, but it’s easy enough to pop in at the last minute. The best move is to eat somewhere else beforehand, since their food isn’t anything special. Grab a punchy Cascade Lemonade instead and enjoy the occasional rockin’ ukulele." - gabe guarente, aimee rizzo
"This Columbia City lounge has throwback decor, a relaxed atmosphere with an intimate stage, and solid acoustics. Regular shows like Blue Monday (a rotating show of blues performers) are well attended, but it’s easy enough to pop in at the last minute. The best move is to eat somewhere else beforehand, since their food isn’t anything special. Grab a punchy, vodka-based Cascade Lemonade instead and enjoy the occasional rockin’ ukulele. "The Royal Room hosts a gamut of local jazz combos, hip-hop artists, folk singers, singer-songwriters, contemporary funk bands, and more in a laid-back nightclub space that’s larger than it looks from the outside. The dinner spans styles, too — Southern soul food, modern PNW, Mexican, along with some bar food standards — but the Southern-inflected dishes are where the Royal Room is at its absolute best. For instance, the Artist’s Special is a hearty plate of dirty rice with black beans and collards, topped with sliced avocado and pickled cabbage. The blackened catfish is an enticingly well-seasoned larger plate, while the shatteringly crisp house-made yam chips served with a bright remoulade is one of the best bar snacks in the city." - Mark DeJoy

"I recommend fans of classic horror head to Columbia City for The Royal Room’s screening of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari with a live score by award-winning Seattle musician Wayne Horvitz and his ensemble. The silent German film—about a crazy hypnotist who gets a sleepwalker to commit murders—has doors at 6 p.m.; there’s no cover, though a suggested donation is requested." - Gabe Guarente

"In Columbia City I end the night at Royal Room, which hosts live music every night — often jazzy piano or world-beat with soul — and serves cocktails and mocktails done with fresh juice and an attention to detail, a fitting finish to a full day." - Jackie Varriano
