Gilpin Hotel & Lake House

My wife and I stayed at Gilpin Hotel and were deeply impressed at the warmth, hospitality and facilities. The staff are the crown jewel of the business - they balance a perfectly clean-cut professionalism with a genuine sense of warmth, congeniality and empathy that made our experience truly unforgettable. Emily is an absolute asset to the hotel - she's professional, empathetic and attentive, and went out of her way to ensure our stay was perfect. Every interaction was defined by a real sense of genuine interest and proactiveness that elevated the entire trip. Jessica was super helpful - she was prompt, attentive, and nothing was too much of a bother. Laura was also great, insisting upon going the extra mile wherever she could. Rob was incredibly helpful and hands on, especially when the hot tub (Cat Bells is superb, I'd recommend it) dipped a little low - he was out promptly and sorted everything out before I'd even noticed. Francis from the restaurant team was also wonderful - he was friendly, attentive and made us feel very comfortable during our visit to Source (which again is amazing). He was super knowledgeable about the menu, had already memorised our dietary preferences and was genuinely just a pleasure to have a conversation with. He and the entire restaurant team were phenomenal - the quality of the dining experience and calibre of customer service is world-class - the effusive praise in their reviews is not overstated, it's totally justified. Gilpin Hotel is a firm favourite, I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to combine a wonderful hotel experience with breathtaking natural views of the Lake District. 10/10.

We stayed at Gilpin Lake House Hotel for our wedding anniversary and had the most wonderful weekend. Connor, the Manager, was first class. From breakfast through to the evening, he went out of his way to ensure everything was perfect. Attentive, professional, and genuinely welcoming – he made the stay feel special. We dined at Spice and it was fantastic. Danny was brilliant. I’m not someone who enjoys very spicy food and he carefully guided me through the menu so I chose something I would really enjoy. The food was outstanding. We also returned for lunch with friends and once again the service was second to none. Breakfast was another highlight. Two mornings, plenty of choice, and the porridge was exceptional. We certainly didn’t leave hungry. The rooms and corridors were pristine and beautifully maintained, with plenty of space to relax and unwind. The owners speak about love, laughter, and heartfelt hospitality – and that genuinely reflects the experience. It isn’t just marketing language. It’s exactly how Gilpin feels. Warm, thoughtful, and run with real care. It is honestly one of the nicest hotels I have stayed in, and I have stayed in quite a few five-star properties. Gilpin stands out not just for quality, but for atmosphere. You feel looked after from start to finish. A perfect anniversary weekend. We will absolutely return.

What is not to love! This is our fourth visit, and I always feel like I’m in a little bubble of serenity when we stay here. The team are amazing, and nothing is too much. This time around we did have a small issue but it was quickly resolved and the team went above and beyond. This hotel remains are number one for escapism and luxury in the Lake District.|Huge comfy bed with views to die for. Beautiful living space; this year we had four members of our family come stay and we had the most wonderful afternoon birthday celebration in our lodge; just perfect!|Breakfast: you couldn’t ask for more.|Source is undergoing a revamp and from what we’ve seen, it’s going to be even more amazing! The newly decorated public spaces are beautiful. Well done to the designer!|Food in Spice is still some of the best, and having the private dining area for my husband’s birthday celebration was the cherry on top!|Thanks again everyone at the Gilpin for the most amazing stay! My wife and I had a fantastic three days and nights here in a spa lodge to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. The accommodation, location, staff and restaurants were all outstanding. The breakfast was varied, plentiful and delicious and the food in both restaurants was incredible. Gilpin Spice was more our thing because that’s the style of food we tend to eat anyway but Source was an experience and well worth a visit. Can’t fault anything and would highly recommend to anyone else thinking of a peaceful and luxurious retreat. We will be back one day.

We stayed at Gilpin for my 30th Birthday celebrations and had an amazing stay. There were a few things that stopped this being a 5 star experience but we would definitely go back, especially for the food and service we received. ||Some of the highlights for us were: ||On site restaurants - the food at both Spice and The Source were incredible. We were sat at a chefs table for our time at Spice and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, both the food and service were impeccable. The tasting menu at The Source was a great experience, not always to our tastes, but the quality of ingredients and the way it was presented couldn’t be faulted. ||Service - the people at Gilpin are clearly very passionate about what they do and we had so many amazing interactions most notably during dinner service and the spa. A particular shout out to Owen who served us at breakfast and during our tasting menu. He was incredibly welcoming, knowledgeable, and detail-orientated and made our stay all the better thanks to his high standards of service. ||Spa treatments - we had a number of treatments during our time at the spa including scrubs, mud masks, and a steam. These were done privately in smaller rooms which made the experience so much fun and relaxing. We then had our couples massage which was one of the best massages I’ve ever had in my life, the perfect amount of pressure and attention to stubborn areas. We ended our time in the hot tub which was the best way to round off an incredibly peaceful and relaxing afternoon. The team at the spa were all so incredibly warm and welcoming I couldn’t recommend the experience here more. ||Comfort of the room - the bed was very comfortable and we had a great nights sleep both evenings. The bathroom was a standout of the room with a large tub and dressing area which we took full advantage of during our stay. The turndown service during the evening was great and we were always surprised by a warm and inviting welcome back to our room after dinner. ||Animals - as an animal lover I was so excited to learn that there were animals on site and during our stay we made a concerted effort to go and see the pigs and alpacas. They were very cute and the pigs in particular were so friendly! ||While our stay was for the most part 5/5 the area that let it down for us was the facilities themselves. A lot of the communal areas of the hotel felt quite tired and run down. The juxtaposition between the level of service and attention to detail in the food made this even more apparent. We did overhear during checkout that The Source restaurant was about to start a renovation project, however I do hope that there is also further investment into the rest of the hotel too. We’ve stayed at other hotels at this price point and unfortunately it did fall short of expectations when it came to the hotel itself. ||That being said the quality of service, food, and spa treatments did make up for this and we would happily return to experience these again. ||A big thank you to all of the Gilpin team for making my birthday feel all the more special with lots of little touch points highlighting the occasion!

The newly refurbished restaurant is a fabulous space and a great place to eat. The food as ever was stunning and the service and attention to detail was exemplary. Still the best luxury Hotel in the Lakes and one of the finest restaurants. Can’t recommend it enough

Our stay at the Gilpin Hotel was exactly what we’d hoped for — peaceful, indulgent, and beautifully run. The setting is stunning, with views that make you want to slow down and take everything in. From check-in to check-out, the staff were warm and genuinely attentive without being over the top. We stayed in one of the Spa Lodges, which felt like our own private retreat. The hot tub, steam room, and outdoor seating made it hard to leave the room. Every detail felt considered — from the lighting to the locally sourced toiletries. Dinner at SOURCE was a real highlight. The food was creative but not pretentious, with each course feeling like it had a story behind it. Breakfast the next morning was just as good, especially eaten outside with coffee and birdsong. It’s not a budget stay, but it’s clear why people come here for special occasions. If you’re looking for a mix of luxury, comfort, and real Lake District charm, Gilpin absolutely delivers.

We had the most wonderful stay celebrating my boyfriend’s birthday, and from start to finish the experience was truly exceptional. The setting is beautiful, the spa lodge was incredibly relaxing, and the food was outstanding — we genuinely didn’t want to leave.||What made our stay extra special was the attention to detail and care from the staff. Everyone was so warm, polite, and professional, and they really went above and beyond. A small but memorable touch was the team remembering that I enjoyed mint tea at breakfast and kindly setting some aside for me the following morning — a gesture that perfectly reflects the level of thoughtfulness throughout our stay.||It was a memorable, luxurious, and relaxing experience, and we cannot wait to return.
