Il Mulino - Downtown (West 3rd)

One of the most prestigious restaurants in New York. While you're there, you'll find American celebrities and their families, and even President Trump and his family are patrons. The restaurant specializes in Italian cuisine, and the service is beyond compare. As a customer, you're treated like royalty. From the street the entrance is a bit obscure — you can barely see inside or get a sense of the atmosphere. Once you step in, a friendly lady (from Colombia) takes your coat, but after that you’re left to figure out what to do next. After standing there for a few minutes, I asked her where to check in, and she said to wait for the maître d’. While waiting, I watched the scene unfold: a very full restaurant with lots of busy waiters, all seemingly speaking Italian. It was actually fun to observe the lively, slightly chaotic atmosphere — very “Italian New York.” The guests were predominantly men, including two groups of around eight. When the maître d’ finally came over, he asked if I had a reservation. I said yes, but he couldn’t find it and gave off an air that he might not be able to seat us. He asked what time we had booked, and when I answered “a few hours ago,” he made it seem as if that was too last-minute. At that point we didn’t feel very welcome and even suggested coming back another day. But after searching by phone number, he found the reservation and ended up seating us, handing us over to a friendly waiter from Ecuador. We were quickly served some bread varieties and tasty small Italian bites. We asked the waiter for help with the wine list, but to be honest, he didn’t seem very familiar with it — disappointing as the list consists mostly of quite pricey Italian wines. We chose a mid-priced one at around $130. The nice waiter skillfully recited the specials (or the entire menu, I’m not sure), and I ordered the scallops wrapped in bacon and the rack of lamb. Both dishes were good. The place was packed and noisy, but that actually fit the New York/Italian vibe — more Little Italy than Greenwich Village. Overall, it’s a unique restaurant with lively energy, but $440 (ex tip) for two people for two courses each feels too expensive for the experience. Hence the 3-star rating.

Il Mulino sets a ridiculously high standard in fine dining. We have been guests for nearly 3 decades. Each time visit seems to surpass the last. Claudio, Louis and the entire team strive and succeed in making you feel like family! The food quality is top notch! The service is 6 stars! Our visit to Il Mulino was nothing short of incredible. The evening began with a refreshing Cima di Conegliano and Coca-Cola, paired perfectly with appetizers like creamy burrata caprese, classic Caesar, escargot, and perfectly crispy calamari. The squid ink pasta and lobster dishes were highlights, showcasing fresh ingredients and bold flavors. For mains, the bucatini all’Amatriciana was rich and satisfying, while the 1/2 rack of lamb was tender and expertly seasoned. The meal ended on a high note with ricotta cheesecake, orange Grand Marnier, and expertly brewed espresso and cappuccino. Impeccable service and a cozy ambiance made it an unforgettable dining experience!

Hands down the best dining experience I’ve had in NYC. Was greeted at the table by rounds of appetizers we didn’t even order, nor had to pay for (bruschetta, cheeses, fried zucchini, garlic bread, and a bread basket). Then the manager came over and explained each of his favorite menu items in incredible detail. Felt so authentically Italian and just a beyond lovely experience. Went for my birthday and would recommend everyone try for a special occasion. Food was best Italian ive had (outside of Italy itself).

Dimly-lit NYC-style classic Italian restaurant with excellent service. Staff constantly availed themselves to us without overdoing it (quite a tactful feat). We had a very lovely and lengthy dinner. It is fairly expensive even for the area so I would restrict visits to special occasions. Overall it was great, I would come back.

Do not confuse this with any other Il Mulino Restaurant. This is I think the original and undoubtedly the best. This is like eating in the old world Italy. Great service and superb food in a true Italian ambience. I have eaten here many times when in New York and always look forward to the experience. A great place to dine.

From the moment we walked in, everyone understood the assignment. The moment we sat down, water was being poured, snti pasti being served, coats being checked. As we were enjoying our starters the server came to give us the daily specials. All sounded so amazing. Decided on pappadelle pasta, my favorite. DD went with the lobster ravioli, her favorite. Hub went with rib eye and squid ink pasta to share as well as the scallops. Scallops were amazing. The sautéed spinach was nicely seasoned. All our entrees were prepared nicely. Piping hot and balanced in flavors. All the flavors were so pure and organic that it wasn't covered up with heavy cream or soaked in butter which I find many Italian restos do. But not I'll Mulino. It reminded me of old school Italian. No gimmicks or oversized portions. Their is passion in every dish prepared. The dessert was hard to choose so our server recommended the sampler. Tiramisu cheesecake and flourless chocolate cake with raspberry notes (my favorite). Thr whipped cream and berries helped balanced out the richness which I appreciated. Although we were so stuffed we had no problem polishing off on the dessert I was choosing between this place and Carbone having tried it in HK. Different vibe. More authentic natural flavors here. Highly recommend.

The best chicken parm I've ever had: thin, crispy, dark meat, cheesy but not heavy, flavorful Intimate, cozy, and dimly lit with roses on the table. An amazing date night spot. Full bar and the complimentary garlic bread was so good!

Very great, very authentic Italian restaurant! We went for lunch on a Sunday. They come out with a giant Parmesan wheel and give you fresh Parmesan, as well as bruschetta and fresh bread and an eggplant dish, which was a great surprise and all very delicious- all complimentary and a nice little snack. I ordered the pesto gnocchi and it was really good. The service was great, and the restaurant itself is beautiful. Would definitely recommend and would go back.

Enjoyed a Father's Day dinner with my daughter after a show at the Comedy Cellar. Picked this restaurant not only because it was close to the venue, but had visited their Las Vegas restaurant and had an amazing meal there. Il Mulino is small and quaint. Old styling inside but nothing that took away from the ambiance including linen tables. The service was first class, prompt and professional. My daughter enjoyed her angel hair pasta dish. I ordered the Veal Chop and was a little surprised it was served as flat as it was. I should have asked how it was prepared, my bad, but I had envisioned a thicker veal chop stuffed with mozzarella cheese. I enjoyed it but I could not taste the flavor of the meat as it was so thin. I will return again and sample another signature dish as I enjoy the quality and the service.

Il Mulino - Perfection on a Plate This is, without a doubt, the best restaurant I've ever been to in my life. Everything about Il Mulino is top-notch, from the moment you walk in until the moment you leave. The space. Cozy and inviting, the restaurant has a classic charm that immediately sets the tone for an unforgettable dining experience. It feels intimate yet lively--perfect for a special occasion or just treating yourself to an incredible meal. The food. Wow. Just wow. The homemade pasta is like nothing else I've ever had. The veal and chicken Parmesans are to die for--perfectly tender, rich, and packed with flavor. The ravioli? Simply divine. Every dish is thoughtfully crafted and tastes like a love letter to Italian cuisine. I've had friends and family tell me this food is on par with meals they've had in Italy, and I completely agree. The service. Exceptional. The staff is attentive, professional, and warm, making you feel like a VIP no matter the occasion. Il Mulino is the one and only restaurant I always recommend to anyone visiting New York. I've never met someone who didn't absolutely love their meal here. This was the best meal of our trip! The type I will dream about and fly back to NYC for!! Incredible experience- from the old school charm, to the impeccable service, to the pasta tossed table side. Amazing! Started with the best martinis. Then all sorts of goodness came out to the table- a basket full of the most delish ciabatta, focaccia, breadsticks, salami and cheese, bruschetta, and killer zucchini soaked in olive oil and spices. What a way to start the meal. Next was the burrata appetizer- the burrata gushed out creamy goodness the moment it was pierced. The entrees are huge but they do offer half orders. The half order of squid ink pasta full of perfectly cooked scallops and shrimp in a spicy olive oil sauce was the perfect size. The pasta was perfectly al dente! The osso bucco was a large tender piece of meat served with rice and the bone with a fork for the marrow! The carbonara was made the way it should be- bacon, egg, cheese- that's it! The capellini il mulino was perfect with tomato and mushrooms. We were stuffed but able to enjoy the best dessert- light pillows of flaky pastry stacked between sweet layers of cream and fruit. I would give this place 20 stars if I could!

The meal and service lends itself to being somewhat of a production, and it was all delicious. They bring out a nice bread basket and other little tastes to start you off. 1. The best tiramisu I have ever had. 2. Nothing about cheesecake intrigues me, despite how much I love desert, and this cheesecake was amazing. I would definitely order it again and recommend most people to try. 3. I especially liked the croutons in the ceasar.

Came here for the first time on a date night, and it's easily one of the best local Italian spots in the city. The service was top-notch.. friendly and attentive without being overbearing. The ambiance is super romantic and cozy, perfect for a date night. The food really blew us away. The meatballs were huge and absolutely bursting with flavor. The chicken parm was cheesy and comforting in all the right ways, and the garlic spinach was the perfect side. I think the highlight of the night was the ricotta cheesecake.. so light and creamy and hands down one of the best desserts I've had in a while. Can't wait to come back and try more!

A classic and unbeatable dining experience. Between their veal limone, tortellini soup, and to die for Alfredo sauce, I can't eat at other Italian restaurants. And the other chain locations don't do this original location justice. One of my all time favorite go to restaurants. And always nice to the whole family or for date night.

This is by far the best Italian restaurant in NYC. Ambiance is old school 80's, waiters in tuxedos, every dish is the best. And they treat their guests to a great after dinner surprise that will leave you smiling.

The place has amazing food and fantastic service. It is truly Italian from the greeting when you step-in the door, to ALL of the delicious authentic food, to the genuine waitstaff and personal attention from the manager. A wonderful, memorable meal!

I've been here a couple times and ordered completely different stuff both times, so I kind of have a feel for the place now. I'm going to give it a 4, BUT it really depends on what you order and who you get as a waiter. The food and service can be uneven. Some items are incredible (the lamb chops - worth going just for those), and some are just alright (both clam appetizers). The ratio of great-to-ordinary stuff on the menu is 50/50. If you order wrong, you're going to feel like you paid 5-star prices for average food. If you order correctly, you'll have a good time. The prices are reasonable for what you get, in my opinion. Two people can split a pasta and a main and that would probably be enough. I like that this location (the original, on 3rd St) feels like a old neighborhood restaurant, because it actually is. I'd go back.

Loved my birthday meal at this old school establishment. The service is a well-oiled machine and the menu is extensive and includes a wealth of diverse specials. I was skeptical, but left very impressed!

Felt like they were less generous with the antipasti start. Cavateli was not cooked. AlDante is perfect. Uncooked pasta no bueno. Not as good as it's always been.

You feel like you've stepped into Italy when you visit il mulino. They start you off with some cheese from the giant parmesan cheese wheel. The food is outstanding. I love the pasta. If you are lucky, they will give you some homemade grappa.

Too many great places either get relaxed or head in the wrong direction - not Il Mulino. With all the Italian hot spots going viral - these guys consistently put out world class food and old school service. They make everyone feel like a VIP. Starting with the amuse bouches - plates of fresh bruschetta, salumi, chunks of aged parmesan, and zucchini...all high-end ingredients assembled with talented care. First course, a pasta sampler - three bites of ephemeral pastas: Fusilli pesto, lobster ravioli and pappardelle with ragu were amazing. Chicken parm pounded thin and smothered in a blend of cheeses and marinara - it was elevated yet not heavy. Halibut that Eric Ripert would emphatically approve of. Classic desserts, tiramisu and ricotta cheesecake prepared as though a famous reviewer was at the table. A fantastic experience, and Claudio is still as gracious and enthusiastic as ever. Cannot wait to go back.

My wife and I were in town visiting our daughter. One of the best things about New York are the restaurants and on this trip we visited Don Angie, Keens and Le Bernardin. All were great, but in terms of overall experience and value, you can't beat Il Mulino! Food, atmosphere and especially service, five stars. Can't wait to go back!

Il Mulino might be my new favorite Italian restaurant in NYC (or one of my favorites, at least)! Started with a bunch of complimentary small bites- amazing tomato bruschetta, fried zucchini, flavorful foccaccia (and other breads), and cheese with cured pork. My Aperol spritz was perfect, which is for some reason a rare thing nowadays (the ratios can be hard to get right). We then got fried calamari, which we definitely didn't need and was just OK. However, even lackluster calamari can't bring down this high score. For entrées, I got the red snapper livornese, and it was so awesome that I did indeed eat that entire huge slab of lightly pan fried snapper covered in tomatoes, capers, and olives. I couldn't find a pic of this in advance but I'm so, so glad I got it. My fiancé got the veal parm, and despite his best efforts, could only finish half. Very thinly pounded veal, not the best he's ever had but definitely up there. We split a side of spaghetti pomodoro, and it actually made me wish I got pasta as my entrée, it was THAT good. Perfectly cooked and the tomato sauce had chunks of fresh tomato and basil. An old school vibe staffed by older Italian men. No dress code, or so it seemed, but you probably wouldn't feel comfortable just wearing a t shirt and shorts inside. Entrées are a bit pricey but I highly recommend! The only downside was the massive stomachache I had after (and garlic breath).

Best service in the city. If you don't get the chicken parm and rigatoni Alla vodka you're missing out. Staff is beyond excellent makes you feel like family. Best desserts and espresso martinis. Service was great. Food was not like it used to be. I have not been there for a long time and it was really a special place. Overall I think there are much better choices in NYC. Even the pre-food setup has changed. They used to give you some nice cheeses, meats and other stuff...now its just tomato bruschetta and bread (both of which were good).

I made a reservation here in March and canceled it 15 minutes later. Over a month and a half later I received a $100 charge on my credit card from Resy on behalf of Il Miluno. Really? In good faith I attempted to contact the restaurant, first reaching out via email several times to no avail. I then called the restaurant and was greeted by a man who advised he could help, but that I needed to call a separate phone number (I think you see where this is going). I attempted to contact this new individual several times and was simply unable to reach anyone at any point in time. What a joke. Obviously frustrated, my wife decided to called the restaurant and was met with the same man who also advised her to call (you guessed it!) a separate phone number. You see how the story ends. This is a classic case of giving someone the run around. Long story short, this place operates in shady business practices and when you attempt to speak with someone, are left with no where to turn. Absolutely pathetic. Plenty of other places to give your business to, especially in Manhattan.

Amazing, authentic Italian dining experience with friendly, attentive staff, a robust menu, and delicious everything. The setting is very romantic, but also loud and a bit crowded. It didn't bother us, but was difficult to hear each other and the server at times. Would definitely come back!

We have been going to this spot for 20* years and not much changes. What does change are the prices. I think the price of a full rack of Lamb at $140 is outrageous , so is the 1/2 rack at $70. The Truffled Ravioli at $50 is the same. Yes, we ordered them as they are our favorites on the menu!! The taste of both are still wonderful as always. We started with the Clams which are equally delicious.. ended with the mixed Berries!! Service is always on point, although we missed Claudio!!!

This meal may ruin Italian food anywhere else for you. Absolutely life changing. Have been to most of the other popular Italian restaurants in the WV, and this one truly does stand out, if you can close your eyes at the prices. Staff is super Italian and very friendly. They start you off with free bread and meats and cheeses. Pastas are handmade. Al dente and a little bit chewy. Freshest of sauces. Rack of lamb is the best I've had. Almost melts in your mouth. And if you choose to share, which I recommend you do, they split each our entrees to make it super easy.

Molto bene!!! So my cousin and I checked this place out! He was in town for business and me, tagged along for a darn awesome dinner!!! First off service, OUTSTANDING! Watching the staff and how they took pride in their job and the dedicated service towards their customers was awesome! Right off the bat servers were on point and bringing food out right away! It was so on point and tasty! Bread basket, little bit of sopprasatta and cheese, a bit of zucchini and some bruschetta to start with was sooo good I couldn't stop eating it all!!' And this wasn't even the appetizers we ordered which also were amazing! Seared scallops, grilled octopus! For my dinner I had the Branzino my cousin the lamb chops! Perfection!!! Drinks were were also on point deserts amazing! And the limoncello yummmy. Yes a little pricy but I will admit for the service, amount and quality of food, I would pay it again and again. Well worth the experience and highly recommended to anyone looking for a great relaxed paced and friendly meal!!!

I can't put into words how amazing the experience and food was here. From the second you walk in they ensure every minute that you are taken care of. The bread selection we got included would be a hefty appetizer at most other places and was some of the best we've ever had. Every single dish our group of 6 had was incredible and exceeded expectations. With all the Italian restaurant options in NYC, I'm so glad we picked here and will definitely be back next time we're out here.

I love Il Mulino. The food is delicious and the staff most attentive. This restaurant represents fine dining at it's best! We absolutely love to see Nadine, a friend from the first time we dined here. They start you off with a chunk of cheese and various other hors d'oeuvres prior to ordering. The appetizers are tasty and the entrees are all excellent partnered with various pastas. The restaurant has 2 beautiful dining rooms, each with a different vibe. Thank you for the anniversary celebration on our last visit.

To give Il Mulino only 5 stars is a crime. It is an expensive restaurant but worth every penny. We called at 5pm to make a reservation for 12+ people for 6:30pm. They were so gracious and accommodating and arranged a table for 12 plus a 4-top for us. The service was impeccable and non-stop, everything from food to drinks to water to dessert. Such a classic NYC Italian restaurant -- we will be back the next time we are in the city!'

I was disappointed with the food. I ate at this restaurant years ago and it was top notch. Not any more, it was just ok. The staff was charming having worked there over 40 years . The ambiance was nice . Just wish the food was better.

You need reservations and I suggest you call them in advance to get a decent time for dinner. Especially if you want to go there on the weekend. I also suggest that you dress in business attire. The interior is old and dark but that's what gives it charm and a sense of being in your Nonna's house. The food is expensive but it's high quality, large portions and delicious. So in my opinion, it's worth every penny. Everyone should treat themselves every once in a while. I love that once you are seated, they provide you with dried sausage, cheese, bruschetta, fresh bread of different kinds and warm garlic bread and zucchini. It's just like being at Nonna's house for a Sunday dinner. We come here all of the time and I always get the same special entree , Langostino with risotto because it's delicious! However, this time I tried a different entree, their lobster special and they take it out of the shell for you too. It was huge and absolutely delicious! I enjoyed every bite! As an appetizer we tried three pasta specials, we had gnocchi with braised lamb ragu, capellini with spicy shrimp, scallops, and mussels and carbonara pasta. They give you a dish with three divisions, so you can try a little bit of each pasta. They were absolutely delicious! We are never disappointed when we come here. We were too full for dessert so we just had espresso and an cappuccino freddo. There is a public parking lot down there block too... You should really come here and celebrate an important milestone in your life! You won't regret it!

Il Mulinos been on my radar for some time now and my fiancé and I decided to celebrate out anniversary here. We made reservations for a late dinner and was seated immediately. The wait staff was very friendly and made you feel like family the moment you arrived. Shortly after being seated we were brought complimentary bread and assortments of meats and cheeses so we didn't order any appetizers. For our drinks we both had espresso martinis which were didn't taste like alcoholic beverages but pretty strong and will sneak up on you. For our entrees I had the lobster ravioli and my fiancé had truffle ravioli, it was honestly the best Italian food I've ever had at a restaurant, the ravioli was cooked to perfection and generously stuffed, the sauce was a perfect consistency and tasted amazing. I look forward to returning

The best dining experience I've ever had. The wait staff was amazing. They are always checking to make sure you have everything you need. The pasta is extremely fresh. It melted in my mouth. They serve you as soon as you walk in with all sorts of delicacies. Definitely recommend this place.

Discovered Il Mulino since 2018 and absolutely love their food which is why i keep going back. I particularly like this location more than their uptown one as it feels more cozy and authentic. Their starters are fantastic and downright addictive. They set you up with a big basket of bread, cheese, meat, zuchinni, garlic bread, and bruschetta. Everything is AMAZING, it might be my favorite part of the meal. Onto the food we actually purchased, I was not too impressed. They have a small menu but way too many specials. We started with the calamari which we thought we ordered the fried one but somehow got grilled in a spicy marinara sauce. It was good but not what we ordered. Next I got the cavatelli with sausage and broccolli rabe. It was delicious, a little too al dente and hard but the taste was spot on, it was garlicky and very flavorful. It tasted even better the next day after microwaving. My husband got the chicken paillard which he liked but it was nothing special. Lastly we ended with the tiramisu and Italian cheesecake. Tiramisu was not good. The ratio of lady fingers to mascarpone was way off. It had way too much cream, all butter tasting and no coffee taste whatsoever. We were very disappointed. The Italian cheesecake was delicious as always. Creamy with a slight taste of almond paste. Overall we had a good time but truthfully I found the free starters and cheesecake to be the only things worth the visit. Entrees were good but could use work, might be better to have smaller menu. Service could be better. Our server was attentive but service got very slow towards the end. When we were still working on our starters a server came to clear our table and took the cheese and garlic bread we were still working on. He took it before we could say anything, later when we told him we weren't done he sent us more cheese but no garlic bread which was a shame because it was insanely good. Overall it was good but we had higher expectations.

When the waiter took our order (6 guests), he rattled off at lease a dozen specials without mentioning any prices. Assuming the prices were the same as the menu $40-$60 per entre, we picked the rack of lamb. When the check arrived, it was $140. The waiter offered no explanation other than "it used to be $90" which meant nothing to us. But for a dinner bill that exceeded $750 he did not even offer a single desert on the house, let me buy you a drink or a come back and we will take care of you. Instead his attitude was, "you must be a cheap guest" to question the bill. Booked Il Mulino for my girlfriends 25th birthday and WOW!!!!! This was without a doubt the best meal I've had in my entire life. Let's start with George, our server. This man had us cracking up the entire meal. His singing and joking made for an enhanced experience. He sang for my girlfriends birthday and then he mimicked a horse by neighing - almost spit out my perfectly made margarita by the bartender. The food was just unlike any Italian food I've ever eaten. I've had my fair share of veal parmigiana and this takes the cake for the best one by a LONG SHOT. Crispy, thin, and perfectly tender. The spaghetti a la vongole was EASILY the best I've had as well. Pro tip - save some money and some room by not ordering any appetizers, they provide you with free antipasti (bread, marinated zucchini, cheese, meats, and bruschetta). 5 STARS!!!!

I think our expectations were likely the problem with our experience here. Having been to Il Mulino in NYC several times, we were expecting the same caliber of food. Unfortunately, the food was just ok but with so many great restaurants in Nashville you need to be better than just ok. We won't be going back.

Fancy and good but overpriced. Ok for an expense account but not recommended with your hard-earned cash.

It looked good while we were waking past it and decided to give it a try. We were given very warm welcome and given seating at the bar though eventually we were moved to a table. I was impressed by their menu and was in mood for some delicious and greasy pasta. We started with baked calamaris and grilled octopus. While you can't get calamari wrong, the octopus was grilled to perfection; soft yet chewy. Next came our mains... I ordered shrimp and spaghetti pasta, my friend ordered Cacio Pepe and another one ordered gnocchi and to our surprise we all were sorely disappointed. Pasta dishes were extremely salty and the gnocchi was below average in taste and a bit on sweeter side. Quite an anti climax of an experience. The same night I got an upset stomach so tossed the leftover pasta that I couldn't finish at the restaurant.

They have an old fashioned rather rigid hierarchy of service that tries unsuccessfully to make the dining experience more personal but what it ends up doing is making a difficult timing situation for service, kitchen orders and table bussing. Our table was unfortunately seated next to a group of men who were loudly manhandling a woman who appeared to be working as an escort. The woman looked like she could handle the men but she was still clearly under duress. One very drunk and loud man grabbed the woman by her neck and tried repeatedly to force his tongue into her mouth while the other men gleefully watched. The staff tried to do damage control by hovering around the table and trying to politely get the men to calm down. When our table complained the staff offered to reseat us but we opted to get out of there as quickly as possible. It is not the job of a restaurant to monitor the behavior of its guests but when the behavior starts to tip over into abuse then that restaurant starts to become complicit in that abuse.

I had a wonder meal at this restaurant. This venue is small and intimate compared to their Las Vegas location. The service and food were outstanding. The ambience is wonderful and you feel like you are in a large home for dinner.
