"The Japanese concept of ‘katei ryōri’ – home-style family dining – is the driving force behind this slick Mayfair operation. Diners are split across two rooms, one more moody and clubby, the other brighter and featuring a small sushi counter. Endo Kazutoshi has designed the menus, which combine the katei ryōri sharing dishes with a sushi selection and Japanese beef cooked over charcoal. Unifying it all is an attention to prime produce, be it the wagyu, the hamachi for the sushi or roasted turbot with furikake and miso butter. Bookend your visit with a drink in the Nipperkin cocktail bar." - Michelin Inspector

London’s New Restaurant Openings

"20 Berkeley Street is doing a Taylor Swift and entering a whole new era. After launching as a British brasserie nine months ago, it’s now relaunching as Nijū, a Japanese grill and sushi bar. Endo Kazutoshi—of Endo At The Rotunda—is the culinary director and you can expect katei ryouri dishes—Japanese home-cooked food—like wagyu sukiyaki and chicken katsu, as well as nigiri and sashimi. The Nipperkin bar will remain downstairs. We recently checked out Nijū. Read our first thoughts here. " - sinead cranna, rianne shlebak

Nijū - Review - Mayfair - London - The Infatuation

"Nijū comes from the same restaurant group as Endo at the Rotunda and Sumi, and like those spots, this Japanese restaurant in Mayfair attracts a high-end crowd with an insatiable appetite for sushi. Unfortunately Endo Kazutoshi is not in the kitchen here, but Nijū has a safe pair of hands that know their way around fish in the form of Sumi’s ex-head chef. And that’s what you should focus on. While you’ll see all kinds of theatrically grilled meats float through the two dining rooms—one looks like the interior of Air Force One and the other like Muji for people with a Coutts card—it’s hard to look past the excellence of the fish. The chef’s selection adds a Nijū touch to each piece, like otoro topped with (shocker) caviar, or a cube of tosazu jelly on top of sea trout. It’s gorgeous fish and well-treated rice with bags of personality in a restaurant that, although busy, frankly doesn’t have much of it. photo credit: Niju" - Jake Missing

Things I Want to Try in London

Niju London in Mayfair offers a truly polished dining experience, one that immediately sets itself apart from the moment you arrive. The service is seamless, attentive, and intuitively paced, professional without ever feeling formal or forced. The sashimi and nigiri were the undeniable highlights of the evening. Immaculately fresh, delicately sliced, and exceptionally clean in flavour, the sashimi had a melt-in-the-mouth quality that speaks volumes about the sourcing and skill behind it. The nigiri followed suit that is precise, balanced, and elegant, allowing the quality of the fish to take centre stage. The drinks connoisseur deserves special recognition for recommending a sake that paired flawlessly with the meal. It was a thoughtful pairing that enhanced the nuances of each dish and demonstrated a genuine depth of knowledge. Niju strikes a rare balance between refinement and warmth, making it as inviting as it is sophisticated. An outstanding meal shared with my partner, and a restaurant I would return to without hesitation. Niju London is operating at a very high level and is undoubtedly one of Mayfair’s standout dining destinations. Highly recommended.

I brought my friend here to celebrate her birthday, and it was my first visit after hearing so many great things. From the moment we arrived, we were warmly greeted by the reception team who kindly showed us to our table. The atmosphere was relaxed, welcoming, and had a lovely friendly vibe. My friend is from Japan and has really missed authentic Japanese food, I was hoping to bring her a taste of home, and this place absolutely delivered. We both thoroughly enjoyed the food and the attentive service. The quality was outstanding, some of the best Japanese cuisine we’ve had in a long time. We went for the 3-course meal and also tried a few dishes from the à la carte menu. Everything was beautifully presented and tasted incredible. I’d definitely come back and highly recommend it, especially if you’re a fan of sashimi!

The sushi was delicious, especially nigiri. And cool chill vibe. Cocktail only filled half way (if it's that amount, at least put in a smaller glass). But very poor service for such a chic establishment. Not very attentive, had to ask multiple times for things. Was told different times when kitchen was closing. Toilets were absolute mess with broken lock, no paper, no paper towels, etc. Disappointing.

I’ve had many opportunities to try different styles of Japanese cuisine, from traditional to modern, and dining at NIJŪ was definitely an interesting experience. The customer service was excellent, and the course menu we tried had some good dishes. However, there didn’t seem to be any real connection between each course — it felt as though each dish was created by a different chef who hadn’t spoken to the others. The dessert was phenomenal, but again, it didn’t match or flow naturally with the rest of the meal. Overall, it was worth trying once, but I wouldn’t return. Unfortunately, this time the experience really fell short of my expectations. The waiter was overly enthusiastic and kept hovering around my table, which made me feel uncomfortable, as if I were being watched the whole time. The restaurant was also quite noisy. To make matters worse, I even found hair in my food — which is unacceptable. Because of this, I don’t think I’ll ever come back.

Ridiculously only one sushi is made by endo, and called it selection sushi by endo and charge more than 250pp. Ingredients are generally cheap and not as fresh. Had huge stomach problem afterwards (pretty sure because it was the only meal I had that day) service is pushy and rude, always interrupted the conversation - even gave me the wrong cocktail immediately after I ordered. Not a good dining experience on new year eve and anniversary don’t think I will go back or recommend it to anyone.👎

Nothing wrong about the experience. It was Wednesday night, so there was only 2 more tables, not much ambience. The food generally was good but nothing remarkable. Nigiri selection good quality of ingredients but that’s it, zero temperature on the rice. The chicken katsu it’s absolutely huge and ibérico por chop it’s anything but ibérico. Good quality of pork, nice sauce but that’s it. Prices are high, 9 nigiri’s the chicken and pork and water only 180 pounds

Growing up in Japan, I’ve had a lot of opportunities to try different types of Japanese from authentic to modern - it was definitely a nice experience at NIJŪ. Customer service was excellent. Each menu was good (we did a course menu). However there is no connections between each menus as if they had different chefs for each menu and didn’t talk with each other. Dessert was phenomenal but again, not matching with the other menus that led to the dessert menu. Once is enough and won’t return again.

Came here off the back of trying Endo at the Rotunda, and was neither disappointed nor particularly impressed. The beef was cooked beautifully, with good smoke flavour but the sauces failed to complement it. The sushi was good and fresh, and the dessert was also satisfyingly sweet. Where Niju falls short of the mark is being more innovative than any other high-standard Japanese restaurant, but I can attest to the quality they provide of the usual dishes.
