When looking for where to settle in Irvine a few years back, my son and I just kind of happened into Northwood Pizza. We were nervous about starting a new life in a city we didn't really know, but the experience of getting a few delicious slices of pepperoni and eating outside on the tables was a calming, grounding foreshadowing of a life to come.
It's three years later, and having tried so many pizza places around Irvine, Tustin and even further south, I can't believe how lucky we are to have this great, consistently good, high quality pizza place less than a mile away. It's always good.
And it really is a neighborhood treasure! My older son and his friends stop by on their bikes for slices, and they're always cool to them, even offering water or ice if they need it. Some places are annoyed by tweens, but they feel welcome here.
I have a young son that only eats cheese. I can just grab a slice when I'm picking up our usual pepperoni and pineapple. Two of the kids have been into thinner pizzas. No problem, you can order thin and even extra thin and match the effort with light sauce.
My wife really like the veggies, so tonight, I used one of their very generous rewards (they give back to their frequent eaters) to try the Northwood Special. We were both blown away by how tasty the veggies are. I can see why they put their name on it as their signature pie.
Most of the time, I just order online. It's painless, and the food is always ready a little earlier than their promise.
Look, I went through my NY style phase, and I'm not often in the mood for Chicago or Detroit style. Now I want that perfect balance of dough and toppings, that California style I grew up on. I don't know if they think of it that way, but that's what I call it.
I'm pretty happy that Northwood is here, and I'd drive across Irvine for it if I wasn't lucky enough to be so close. I like to think our initial stop years ago was a sign not known yet that we'd found home.
